  1. I am a vegetarian. I too eat cheese and fish, so technically not a full veggie, but I have been a vegetarian for 20+ years. . I am two weeks postoperative. Yesterday was my first time of eating tuna. My NUT said she would rather I eat fish and eggs than trying to get my protein from just beans. Today I had cottage cheese with a bit of homemade applesauce and for dinner I had tuna with a dab of mashed sweet potato. Are you sleeved yet? If so, what are you eating?

    Any Sleevers That Are Vegan?

I made the change to vegetarian about 3 weeks ago and am in love wtih my new lifestyle. I am still eating fish and cheese to get in the protien- I have never had tofu but know that I must try it and other forms of plant based protein- hopefully once a taste is aquired from that I hope to come off of the dairy- It's good to know that it can be done even with the surgery.
  3. Recently switched to a vegetarian lifestyle (still eating cheese and fish as a protein source though) and would appreciate any advice, recipes or any other tid bits to help me stay on track... Thanks.

2 Days Post Op And Starving!

Well let's just say I'm crying in bed. Having my apartment smell like food and watching my mom and get fiancé eat is so tough. Im a vegetarian and those chicken tacos looked so amazinggg sigh /: but I understand that the first couple of weeks will be the toughest. I can't wait to get to my goal but for now I'm just trying to mentally take this all in. Having no one understand what I'm going through is the hardest part right now, other then wanting to eat my whole kitchen. Sigh.
  5. If you are sure you don't want to, then no one should give you any grief over your decision. I would just urge you to think it over and be sure before you give up your surgery date. But if you are sure, then I'm glad you stopped in time. I didn't have as much to lose as many, so I too had the idea that I should lose with diet and exercise. I was going to get a lap-band about seven years ago, and then changed my mind because I was going to do it myself. While I am glad I didn't get the lap-band, I did waste those seven years not losing on my own, and actually gaining some. I spent seven years avoiding work events with my husband, seven years not buying clothes, seven years feeling worthless and gross. Seven years of mostly socializing on the internet, not in person, etc. So one day, I woke up and said "I can't do this on my own" and started the approval process. I got approval and my surgery date in under two weeks. I put it out of my mind during those two weeks, and I had a really easy pre-op diet (low fat/vegetarian). The day of surgery, there was a delay, and I LOST IT. I was crying. I wanted to leave the hospital. I wanted that IV out of my hand. My poor husband was at a loss for what to do. I was determined to just do it myself through diet and exercise. The pain was going to be too horrific to bear! The nurse came to check on me and gave me some valium and I went through with the surgery. The discomfort was there afterwards, but nothing unbearable and three months out I have to remind myself that there was discomfort. The point of all that is that I think it is completely normal to have second thoughts about a huge decision like this. Many have posted that they have thought about not going through with it. It is a huge adjustment. Your head is going to rebel against this, even if it IS the right decision. That's why I say give it plenty of thought. 4ALongerLife is right, for most the battle with the pre-op diet hunger does not really exist after surgery. You might have head hunger. I eat more out of obligation than anything right now. A liquid diet for two weeks before surgery would have been very tough for me. I might have "cheated". I think the surgeons know that many will cheat on that diet. Best wishes to you! Keep us posted, regardless, okay?

    Scared And Excited

Slwf-are you on a 10day pre-op liquid diet? My doc in Miami said I only need two days... Based on what I've read on this forum I was going for a week. Did the nutrionist give you a list of do & donts? I also recieved Vitamins and a liquid Protein that I won't take bc it's made out of animal (am a vegetarian). My doctor is well known in Miami but I feel like am entering a meat market. Cut & Go.... Not sure if am overeacting. Good luck and keep us posted
  7. Well, I am one week shy of my 3 month post-op date. Everything is GREAT! I am so loving life. I love my sleeved stomach. I've lost 45 lbs, well actually a bit more, so far - which I think is absolutely terrific. I can now look down without leaning forward and can see my toes and...my pubic area (it has been several years since I've been able to do that). I have 6 garbage bags full of fat clothes to give to a charity. I don't have many clothes left that fit and don't look like I'm still wearing fat clothes. I'm only buying an item here and there to stretch my now sparse wardrobe. Someone called me skinny today!!!!! WHAT!?! I'll take that, even though I am still over 200lbs. Can't wait to get under 200lbs. I'm eating anything I want - a bite here and there. I'm certain I need to get more protein in though. I've backed off on the protein shakes lately, but need to add those back in. I'm eating a 90-95% plant based vegan diet and the other 5-10% is a vegetarian diet. The part that is not vegan is dairy - milk for my coffee, a little bit of cheese, and there is often butter or dairy or eggs in a few other items I consume, like in certain breads. I've been working out 6 days a week - yoga, kettlebell class, ellipitcal, hiking, spinning classes, boot camp classes, etc. I feel freaking fantastic! I also feel like I don't take up as much space. Love that feeling. Life is GOOD! If you are wondering if getting sleeved is right for you....DO IT!!! It will change your life for a fitter, thinner tomorrow. Yes, you still have to work at nourishing your body with healthy food choices, but the sleeve is a terrific tool to help with that. Your food life will never be the same. The sleeve allows you to live your life around other important things other than around food and all the pressures and cravings a morbidly obese person deals with minute by minute. I know, I've been there and been there in a LARGE way. One Love.

    Food Portions Questions.

the pouch should hold two to four onces depending on how long you have had it. Our nutritionist told us that after a year you should be able to eat a small (michellinas example) and that is all. I dont do well with meat most days so I supplement with protein shakes and eat lots of fruit and vegetables. I guess I have become mostly vegetarian because meat does not like my band or my stomach anymore.
  9. Hi im not a real big meat eater an rather avoid most meat except i like fish an all seafood. I guess im a pescatarian by accident Does anyone have suggestions for powders or even shakes?? Thanks so much

    Starbucks/ Panera Suggestions

I'm screwed with Sbux. My drink is a venti iced green tea latte, 1 pump, double matcha. I can give up the pump but their matcha is mixed with sugar so it's unavoidable. I've had 3 - 5 of those per week for the last 3 years so... this is gonna be an adjustment. Sbux chicken sausage Breakfast wrap has 300 calories/14gm Protein. They have an egg white wrap too, IIRC. Panera has a really good vegetarian black bean Soup (110 cal, 1g sat fat, 2.5g total fat, 980mg sodium, 18g carbs, 3g sugars, 3g Fiber, 6g protein). When banded I would get that and a half asiago roastbeef sandwich (350 cal, 7g sat fat, 13g total fat, 630mg sodium, 32g carbs, 2g sugars, 1g fiber, 24g protein). Breakfast power sandwich (360 cal, 6g sat fat, 14g total fat, 860mg sodium, 36g carbs, 3g sugars, 4g fiber, 23g protein). You can easily skip the bread on anything above.
  11. Textured Vegetable Proteins (TVP) is a vegetarian substitute for meat that's generally made from soy flour. www.livestrong.com/article/270264-what-is-textured-vegetable-protein-made-from
  12. Dont give up on the Protein -- we dont have a choice - its really necessary. Though I dont crave the foods that I used to love pre-op, I dont really dislike anything. I'm loving Veggies, all kinds of lentils, fish and chicken. I bet you'll find more food that your sleeve loves as you reach 3 months. That was when I was cleared for solid food, and I found that I loved fish. Pre-op, I was not too keen on non-vegetarian food. I just used to have eggs. Now, I eat fish atleast thrice a week. Hang in there, and take care of your body!!

    Clensing Tea

Why?????? The best thing you can do for your kidneys and liver is stop eating JUNK, the GARBAGE that made us fat in the first place, that overloads the kidneys and liver, which is EXACTLY what is going to happen once you have the surgery and begin eating the right way again. Not to forget all the Water you must consume everyday will help your system also. One thing I have learned, and I am extremely thankful for, is that since having surgery and reaching a good point of adjustment, my food intake is very limited and I now choose healthy foods to eat. No more junk food. I also drink plenty of water. I have been set free from all those diet gimmicks and quick fixes seen on TV all the time. My body has never felt better, all done very naturally now with correct food, no more overeating, and plenty of exercise. Also as a side note, because of the band I can no longer eat red meat or pork. So, I have also become an incidental vegetarian. When I told my surgeon this, he laughed and said that can be a good thing, no?

    Not Eating

Getting thinner, I do not want this to sound like I am lecturing but, dear you need to eat. Not eating does not fix your weight, it could cause more severe issues. The sleeve is a tool to help you -just not eating is scary unless there is something medically going on? If not, why not try going back to basics and moving forward slowly? Start with Protein shakes, scrambled eggs, refried Beans, split pea Soup and basically mushies. Then progress to lean meats like deli sliced turkey, then eventually more dense protein like rotisserie chicken, without skin. It is about learning and eating right for your health. If you are not comfortable, please contact counselor and nutritionist for assistance. We want you to be well. Many on this forum have great suggestions, Irene, Lil Misdiva, has a basics bootcamp and always offers great advise. Susan, Lissa, Feedyoureye (if you are vegetarian), and many more are here and they help folks with their personal experience and knowledge. Please take care of you, sip and get your protein/food on board. Don't want to see you back in hospital, want to see you prosper in your life journey. Sandy
  15. Well, I can't say enough good things about the whole procedure and everyone involved. The supervised diet doctor is Dr. Garza next door, and she and her staff are also wonderful. Dr. Garza's office sells the unjury brand protein powders but I was not required to buy it. I just did because it was easy. Dr. Cribbins' office sells the Celebrate Vitamins, but they were not required. I bought them because I figured why not, but I grew to hate them and then I believe I developed an allergy to them so no more of that! Basically, my food plan was: Very low fat and vegetarian for two weeks prior to surgery. I got my surgery date less than two weeks out, so I didn't even have the whole two weeks of pre-op diet. Clear liquids for three days following surgery (I was in the hospital those three days, no problem) Full liquids/thinned pureed foods for five weeks. I think at four weeks I was allowed to add crackers to Soup and that was pure excitement! lol After that, I got to introduce regular foods gradually. I was terrified of the pre-op diets that I had read about on this site. I didn't think I could comply with full liquids for several weeks pre-op (post op was a piece of cake - did I just write that?). I was so relieved to find out, after I was almost through the process, that Dr. Cribbins has an easy pre-op diet. I would just double check, if you call, that everything is still the same because things might change.
  16. Yep, the eating plans are all over the place. My pre-op was vegetarian, very low fat for two weeks, then full liquids for five weeks post op. I've had no problems though, so I'm okay with it.
  17. I Only know that at the INT hospital you get your video of the surgery and if you have someone traveling with you they have great meals at their cafeteria. Don't know the age difference on the hospitals but florance has only vegetarian meals at their cafeteria and they have slightly bigger beds for your companion but they say their about the same as far as comfyness. Good question looking forward to seeing others answers.
  18. I lost 89% in the first year. And I ate carbs and vegetarian. It's a miracle!
  19. Hey Lissa, Yes, I am scheduled for surgery in 4 days. I hope I am like you and I won't want sweets like I do now, but I also hope I am able to get some foods down successfully. I guess I have the added issue of being a vegetarian. I am hoping tofu will be agreeable with me. Thanks!

    Eating Is A Chore Now!

It will get better everyone. There is a really common occurance called water nausau (I always spell that wrong.) But if you put a little juice or crystal light in it, that will help it go down better. Also string cheese and greek yogurt is awesome for mushy food that is satisfying. But that will depend on your lactose tolerance. I have also used lactaid a lot because it is just easier on my stomach than regular milk. If you like indian food, you can also try the tandoori freezer meals (just stay away from the rice part.) They have vegetarian paneer tikka masala that uses tofu instead of chicken and its a spinach mushy consistancy (like a lot of indian food). I've found dense meats can be hard on the stomach. If you do try meat, go for dark meat cause its easier to get down. Also mashed up avacado and small pieces of lightly cooked shrimp soaked in lime juice work really well with a mushy diet and taste great. These are just some tips that worked really well for me. I hope maybe they will help you too. OH and one other thing a book i have says, which is totally true for me, is to drink something warm in the morning cause it will help gentle waken your stomach and prep it for liquids and food. I usually either have some decaf coffee or warm instant cream of wheat using light soymilk and sugar free syrup.

    Hello

hello everyone, I have been a bandster for a yr now and I am really greatful to the band!!!I have not lost a lot of weight,,,,but i have reduced my NSAIDS and am on a right path for health improvement.. All say that the band works better in the 2nd yr!!! My problem is that I cant walk much due to muscle pain and arthritis. And because I dont exercise I am not loosing!!!Being a vegetarian my protien content is also low. I am sure that I will find a way out. At least I have stopped putting on weight ,since I cant eat much!!!!Hahaha.. All the best to all of you. The band is a wonderful tool and we should use it well.
  22. I wrote a huge post yesterday on my phone and it did not post. Urggg. Anyway here are my thoughts as a Greek chick. If your Greek place does not make Avgolemono (Greek Lemon Soup) find a new place! Does have rice but with no restriction you should be fine. chicken Kabobs, usually chicken and veggies would be good option. They may also have Lamb Kabobs. They will most likely also have bone in roasted chicken seasoned with lemon. Tzatziki- is a yogurt sauce made with dill and cucumber which would help if you think the food is good dry. Greek garlic roasted potatos are to die for when made right. There may be a veggies in tomato sauce side dish (though squash and zucini are not in season right now. Higher in fat options Pasticho- baked Pasta with cheese- May be made with ground lamb. Personally I prefer vegetarian version no meat. But my family eats it as a side dish and not as the main meal. Mousaka- potato and eggplant but topped with white sauce. (not my personal fav but...) I would stay away from Spanokopita/Tiropita- What Americans call Spinach pie Very high in fat and may get clumpy in your pouch. The phyllo can get doughy if it sits around (and many places make a large pan and then heat up individual servings when you order. 9 times out of 10 restaurant Baklava sucks, been sitting around to long and the top layers are no longer crunchy. And there is a pool of honey on the bottom. The sauce should absorb into the phyllo. If there is a huge amount in the pan they've put to much. Yes my vent of the day. Just my opinion though I am admittedly biased.
  23. Thanks for your help y'all. I would love the link to the facebook group . I just feel like i cant eat normal meals, food now , Set aside bread rice pastas, I cant eat meat very well w/ out it hurting, I cant eat eggs, Must of anything, I have been considering becoming a vegetarian becuase i seem to have less issues with that at this point . Did anyone have this issue w/ their band before the VGS surgery ?

How Soon Did You Get A Date?

I was approved in December, and wanted to have my surgery in December before the end of the year for insurance reasons. The paperwork was submitted and two days later I was approved! I didn't even have two weeks before surgery since they were squeezing me in before the end of the year. I didn't have a liquid diet at all (surgeons are all different on these things) but I had to be very low fat and vegetarian. That dashed my birthday plans of all you can eat Brazilian steakhouse dinner, but it was so worth it! I would say it just depends on your surgeon's schedule and your surgery coordinator. I imagine some are busier than others and your experience will depend on an opening. I am sure my wait time would have been more if they weren't trying to accommodate my surgery before the end of the year.

    Pureed Phase?

Would the liquid, canned chilli sauce be acceptable during this phase? It's vegetarian so no meat and it has no beans either.
