    What to pack

I was barely in the hospital 24 hrs. My bathrobe and a zip up hoodie were useful. And I bought new slippers. I wore the same clothes home I wore there. I brought my marajuca oil for my face (best stuff ever). I have long hair so I brought a hair tie too. Really I needed very little. They provided toothpaste etc.
  2. So I just went to my psychiatric evaluation and nutritionist appt yesterday. I passed them both now I'm just waiting to hear from the surgeons. My insurance covers the entire procedure. Since I haven't talked to the drs yet I still have a few questions. Will I never be able to go out to dinner again? The nutritionist made it seem like I will be eating cottage cheese and fish for the rest of my life. From what ive heard after your weight loss period you can eat a little more (variety not quantity) but not a lot or else you will gain it back. The thing with me is I only eat when I'm hungry. I want to be able to have cake on my wedding day and a slice (not 3) of pizza one day. I want to one day be able to enjoy certain foods but obviously in moderation. Anyone who knows please let me know
  3. My weight loss has been officially noticed by the women I work with (from about 2 months post-op) and by my students, but not really from anyone else. Some of my students from 3-4 years back often don't recognise me at first, and do a double-take when they realise it's me. It is heartwarming to hear my students call me "slim" now, even though I'm not, as I'm still obese, and even if and when I get to a normal BMI I will still be considered big by Japanese standards (as I was when I first came here many years ago). The men I know haven't said anything to me unless I bring it up first.

Did you gain the muscle back?

I take testosterone shots each week which help with building muscle. If you don't get enough Protein your not going to gain muscle. You can most definitely gain muscle. Look into Testosterone injections. It is a huge help. I found out that my Testosterone numbers dropped drastically after surgery. They upped my dose and I'm back to normal. The weight loss has slowed for me, but I'm still losing inches and my waist size continues to shrink. I also need to up my calorie intake. Back to eating ice cream every night again. Last time I did that, I think I lost 9 lbs in a 7 day period.

    What causes stalls?

Also, my understanding (from years of dieting) is that stalls/plateaus are when my body is rearranging everything to accommodate the fat loss-- moving fat around so that is more easily accessible, etc.
  6. Hey guys here is my story so far..... Pre op i didnt do a diet because it was too short notice and on surgery date i weighed 326.2 lbs. Post op day one i kept vomiting black blood and felt awful with gas pains and i had to walk which was painful but i was told it was to prevent DVT and help the gases. I was discharged and did a 2 week clear Fluid diet which in i realised i could drink as much as i wanted which frankly scared me but my diet was Jello , New whey protien and allot of watered down Soup sachets. I felt hungry allot but it varied from day to day and meal to meal. Specially when i went on to mushies. Then came the clear fluids for a week which didnt really fill me up that much but it was better than the clears. I was gettong in about 600-900 calories a day and walking sporadically . At my 2 week visit my doctor was impressed with my weight loss but i asked him about feeling satisfied and that i had buyers remorse sometimes cause i never really hit that sweet spot and he said to wait till solids. Week 4 i was on mushies. I had my first "full" feeling with amys organic chilli blended. It was a burping oh crap kinda feeling that didnt last long and it was after 4 or 5 spoons. I was doing ok through the mushies then i cheated at the end with a kobe steak as a treat. The steak freaked me out because it was a 5 ounce steak and i had 2 pieces of dim sum with it and yeah it felt kind of uncomfertable and satisfying at the same time but then i got worried. So far a month in and first 2 days onto solids, yesterday i went out with a co worker and i had to go to a restraunt and i orderd a steak since that was the best thing between what they had and i orderd the smallest steak which was 7 ounces and i ate it slowly but with no problems. But i felt pressured cause my co worker kept pointing out i didnt eat anything. I was amazed i could eat the steak whole!! Anyway today i can hardly eat anything and im very confused. Is it normal to be able to eat that much one day and not much the next? Is steak a slider? I didnt have anything else with it i.e sauce/ sides. Im now getting 800-1200 calories and my weight is now 293lbs. The wrap up is i discoverd that i must be a compulsive eater and im dealing with that but its hard. 2nd is that i need to learn allot more about my sleeve.
  7. I am going in for my evaluation for Lap band on 1/14/10, I have BCBSof IL, they (University of Iowa Hospital) have informed me that I will be required to go on a 3 month diet per insurance and the Dr. will want to see weight loss as well. Has anyone recently had experience w/BCBS of IL, most what I have found is negative feedbanck about how difficult but, that was also posts from 2007 and 2008. Any one with any words or views for me is greatly appreciated! I know the hospital has already contacted my insurance company and it is covered but reading the policy is so confusing to figure out exactly what they are looking for.

    2 month mark & down 50 lbs!

My starting weight was 268 & I'm 218 now. I am counting the 2 weeks weight loss prior to surgery. I was 253 on day of surgery. This is an interesting journey--some weeks I'll stay the same weight & some I'll lose 4-5lbs. My goal is to lose 8-10lbs a month, but ultimately, I guess I'll just see what my body decides to do. Keep up the good work!
  10. I am going through a divorce as well. I am concerned about the opposite problem. I can't eat when I am under stress. In fact, if I try and do anything beyond sipping Water or herbal tea, I feel the need to vomit. I was banded a month ago and have lost 30lbs. YUP...you heard me...30lbs in a month. I am telling people it was because I had WLS, but the truth is, I have no appetite. I am worried about this because I am not getting the medical benefits of learning to eat real food, recognize when I am full or any of that. I have emotional anorexia. My husband left because he was convinced I was cheating on him. I know my weight loss would only have added to his crazy suspicions, so I know it was time to end it. He is VERY controlling. I guess I should be happy for my freedom, but I have been "institutionalized" over eight years. It's like a prisoner leaving jail...but not knowing how to function in the "real" world. Good luck to us all having to deal with such major life changes together!
  11. I had my surgery in April. By the middle of June I was staying focused. I was attending my OA meetings every week, I was walking at lunch time, I was eating the right things. Then on June 16th my oldest son (10) told me that my husband, his step dad, beat him up while I was at my OA meeting a month prior. Needless to say my life became different instantly. I had to kick out my husband the next day. There was a lot of unpleasant stuff over the next 3 weeks that resulted in a restraining order against him which included no visitation with our 2 year old daughter. I was devastated. How could a man I was so in love with be like this? So, 3 months later, at my 3rd fill appointment, I had only lost 4 pounds. Considering all of the emotional eating I was doing, I was pretty happy that I had lost those 4. At my 2nd fill appointment, a week after I kicked out my husband, I told my PA that was giving me the fill, about what was going on in my life. She said to just focus on getting though it and not stress over the weight loss. Then at the 3rd fill appointment, when I only lost 4 pounds she was disappointed in me. I think she forgot what I was going through and I didn't want to talk about it anymore. My concern was that my PA seemed like she didn't want to give me a fill at the 3rd appt. because I hadn't lost enough weight. I finally got some restriction from that fill (5.5cc in a 10cc band), but I am not quite in the Green Zone yet. My next fill is Nov 8th. I lost 5 pounds after that fill, then more stuff happened with my husband and I gained back 4. I'm back to it now and lost 2, for a net loss of 3 pounds since my last fill. I'm worried that my PA won't give me a fill at my next appointment because I have not lost enough weight. So, I'm back at it, hoping that all of the divorce/custody stuff has settled down, and sticking to my meal plan. I can stick to it as long as I don't have the major emotional stuff going on in my life. Anybody else have major life changes happen during their journey? How did you deal with it? I can manage the head hunger that comesl with daily emotional/stress stuff. It was just the big whammy life stuff that knocked my train off the tracks. Has anybody out there be refused a fill because they didn't lose enough since the last fill?
  12. I think that because the band allows you to have a little bit of almost everything it makes it easier. I mourned overeating for a while after banding. Occasionally I miss being able to overeat, but the positives that go along with the weight loss far outweigh the negative of missing that "full feeling". Sue
  13. Thanks for all the responses! I am happy to hear that it is still possible to have success even with GERD. I am already taking daily meds, and will for the rest of my life with or without the sleeve. I just don't want to end up with an ulcer. I know that weight loss can help GERD, and also I won't be eating a lot of the foods that trigger it now.
  14. I'm 38 days post-op sleeve and for about a week, no loss. Dr said this normal until my body adjusts from the rapid loss. Anyone else going through it?

    Homemade Hair Masks

@@BitterSweet* awesome, I will have to look at those! Ever since I was a teenager I could sit there and run my hand through my hair and a handful of hair come out like it was nothing. I have to make sure to brush it just right when I pull it up to not look like I have giant bald spots. I was watching QVC one night and they had a wig presentation and just shaving it off and going to wigs was tempting HAHA =D

    Gym

I started training pre-op to help with the weight loss and to get into a healthier lifestyle. Post-op, my surgeon cleared me for cardio about two weeks after surgery, then cleared me for strength training after a month. I took it very slow to compensate for the decreased calories and surgical recovery. Best of luck on your journey.
  17. I am 8 months post op. I am down 99.5 pounds. That number doesn't even seem real. This journey is so amazing. We are the only ones who will ever understand the highs, lows, and complete life changing situations that come with weight loss surgery. Some days are great, some days are not. Whenever I have a bad day I get on this site and read everyone's success and tips. I also look back at old pictures to see how far I have come. I encourage everyone to do the same. Make some before and after collages. You will feel amazing in no time! The before pic is two months before surgery. The after is about 7 months post op.
  18. Hi All, Feeling GREAT!!!! I know I lost 10 lbs when I went to dr. office on 4/27 but have lost more since then. Not sure how much because I have a lousy scale. Need a new one...already on list of things to buy. Still have some gas after I eat lunch and dinner but food is going down good. Its funny how I get full so quickly....love that!! I just created this weight loss ticker and copied and pasted it and hoping it will stay every time I write a new topic or reply to someone. Did I do this right? P

    Cheated on pre op diet

I cheated on my pre-op diet, as well. I felt like poop on grass but I picked myself back up and did not do it again. I did no harm to my body either as my surgeon was very happy with my pre-op weight loss and size of my liver. Still, I do not encourage you to cheat.

    No hunger but

No hunger after surgery...how to I know the right amount to eat? Enjoy the no hunger part. it doesn't last forever and is a perk of the surgery. I don't get very hungry and I'm 9 months post op. Make sure you are tracking what you take in and meet your nutritional goals that i hope your weight loss center or surgeon gave you. As long as you meet your goals, you're fine. http://BariatricPal.com/index.php?/topic/373808-No-hunger-after-surgery%2E%2E%2Ehow-to-I-know-the-right-amount-to-eat%3F/page__view__findpost__p__4225563

@@jenn1 Thanks for the links. I will definitely check them out. I'm doing cardio 5 days a week right now, but want to start strength training so that my skin has time to catch up with the losses. Thank you for the response!
