    Poop talk (sorry!)

Are you eating anything with "sugar alcohol" aka xylitol, sorbitol, etc.? That stuff was like the express train to Diarrhea Town before getting sleeved. I bet with a tiny pouch for a stomach, it would mess you up.
  2. It is clear to me from your post that we have very different opinions on what being supportive to your partner means and that is ok. Everyone is entitled to run their marriage the way they want. The OP asked for advice on getting support from her spouse, and I thought telling someone you would drink in the home of an alcoholic behind their back, was not a good example of how to do this. I probably shouldn't have responded, but sometimes you just can't help it. I'm sorry my post bothered you.

    Substance abuse

When I had my Psyche evaluation I asked the Dr what would disqualify me from being approved for the surgery. One thing he stated was being an alcoholic since I would need to refrain from drinking alcoholic beverages during my recovery from surgery. As for you. You should seek the help of a qualified medical professional who can offer you guidance and treatment.

    I regret this surgery

"A food addiction addict". Hahahaha. Redundant, much? That's like saying, "an alcoholism alcoholic". By the way, addicts aren't "pathetic". There are many, many studies that prove beyond reproach that addiction is a disease just like cancer or diabetes. People like yourself who insult addicts are the truly pathetic ones. Tell me something, genius. Where did you get your psychology degree? I assume you have one since you're playing armchair psychologist and pretending you're qualified to make these statements. As someone who does have bachelor's and master's degrees in psychology and will be finishing up my doctorate soon, I actually am qualified to diagnose and treat. I can see clearly that you're a rude, lonely, bitter, uneducated, uninformed, judgmental idiot who thinks they know it all, but actually knows nothing. I'm also guessing you're probably quite old, which likely contributed to your bitterness. Bummer. On June 12, 2017 I had my gallbladder removed, my lapband removed and revised to an RNY. Spouse struggles, Supportive or not?

I completely understand what you are saying on one hand. When I didn't want to eat healthy I hated people telling me what to do. On the other hand, would you keep bottles of alcohol around an alcoholic? It's a thin line. I'm just wondering how other people handle it. I'm in therapy working on my relationship with food and I am just afraid that my son is developing the same habits he has. I want him to be healthy too but I know it's up to him. He eats candy and all that crap and it doesn't even effect me. I just wish he would avoid a few of my triggers or favorites. It's just hard.
  6. Yeah, I'm in several community groups and social clubs whose night/evening meetings are at hotels (as in bars) and bistros/cafes. People are going to wonder, indeed, when I don't order food or alcohol or soft-drinks in future.
  7. Hi Nikki - protein is 70 grams but I don't have a calorie goal. My team asked that I stay away from pastas, bread, excess sugar, alcohol and carbonation. Otherwise, I'm ok to try things in moderation. I find after a few bites at each meal, I'm satisfied. If I had to guess, is say no more than 1,000 calories in a day - probably closer to 700-800. 8. Thank you... I'd have a last minute beer but i don't want to thin my blood with alcohol!

    Anyone scheduled for september

I totally know how you feel, I kind of did the same with the alcohol, and those nights of fun and dining. Last night a cheated a bit I had 3 cups of vodka [emoji85] and I had a home made taco salad.
  10. I'm almost 6 months out from RNY and literally so happy I made this decision. I'm 25 and my parents had said the same thing. They love me but elective surgery is a scary thing for a parent to support for their child. When I told the chances of me losing in my own and keeping it off after a lifting of obesity they were still skeptical. Now my parents are 100% supportive The drinking part or not drinking part is hard socially. My friend had the surgery and drank about 8 months out, she just gets completely **** faced after one glass of wine and her drink choices changed. It's suppose to be one year with out alcohol, if you can't do that you might want to think about your life. It's weird socially eating out / drinking at first but you'll fall into a routine Seminar 12/27/16: wt 304 Surgery 3/23: wt 287 3 months post op : 236

    Surgery Update

The reality of losing my drug of choice is setting in. Food was my last drug I could abuse. I gave up alcohol and drugs nearly 10 years ago, been sober ever since. Food was something I could abuse and now it is gone. It is a Friday evening, I worked a few rough days at work and I want my normal escape. I want pizza and wings and video games. Those days are gone and it is hitting me hard. Sent from my SM-G900V using BariatricPal mobile app
  12. I had my gastrologist and my surgeon confer because I had really bad GERD, had Barrett's, which is pre-cancer cells (which I had been treated for and have been clean of for three years). In addition, I had a hiatal hernia. We weighed all the options and the risks. My surgeon recommended the bypass, which I would not have done. Why? A good friend had a bypass and she constantly dumps, is as pale as a ghost, 80% of her hair has fallen out and she just looks sickly all the time. My gastrologist cleared me for the sleeve. The issue with the sleeve and esophageal cancer is one way to remove the cancer is they have to cut out the cancerous portion and pull up the stomach to meet the healthy esophagus. Since they remove a lot of your stomach, there won't be enough stomach to pull up. Someone may think I'm crazy for having the procedure done, but I have committed to yearly scoping and to stay away from the triggers. Not everyone develops GERD who has the gastric sleeve. You just have to be diligent and follow your surgeon's plan - most have you taking something for the acid for the first 3-6 month. At my six month check up they told me to stop taking my ppi. I'll admit, I was terrified. Before surgery if I didn't take it I couldn't even drink water. I weaned myself off of it and I have had zero problems and have never felt better. I do believe a lot of it had to do with my diet change - no eating until I'm stuffed, minimal alcohol, no diet cokes, no chocolate or sweets, no fried foods, minimal spicy foods. Also, I quit eating after 7:00 p.m. Of course the huge weight loss helps a lot too. I only told one friend about the surgery. Has my life changed? Absolutely! My entertainment isn't going out eating and drinking anymore. I thought I would be sad about it but I have found other things to do now. Hiking, biking, gym, kayaking, which are way more fun than eating and drinking and you feel good after doing them. Is this surgery worth it?!?!?!? A-B-S-O-L-U-T-E-L-Y! My regret, as many others will say, is I didn't do it sooner.
  13. I agree about the sleep study. My hospital required a sleep study because apparently there is a higher incident of problems if there is sleep apnea that is not treated. So, I found out I have pretty bad sleep apnea. Now I know why I would wake up so tired and with headaches. I don't have the same issue because I have a ton of co-morbidities with a BMI of 37. My bp is so bad they have been working hard to reduce it it just for surgery, it was 200/120 not too long ago. Plus I have non-alcoholic fatty liver disease and type 2 diabetes diagnosed at 34/35 years old. I am 43 now. I am really anal about seeing the doctor and so I may not have had all my diagnoses if I had not been pro-active in seeking medical care. So , one thing is to keep track of your blood pressure. Have your liver enzymes checked out and also the sleep apnea. I am surprised they wont take you just with your BMI!

    Win

Ooooooohhhhhhhh... Wine! Lol! Totally makes sense! 1 glass of wine isn't a bad thing. You don't want to drink more than that, though. If alcohol is causing a problem for you, please speak with your doctor.
  15. I'm 7 out. I'll occasionally have a soda, but mostly lost my taste for it and it takes me all day to drink one. Plus, the sugar. Soda is a slippery slope to regain for people that are addicted, in my opinion. But carbonated water? Oh yeah. I'm on it. I alternate that and still water all day long. An occasional beer or cider, yep. I was never told no carbonation. Obviously it's not good for a healing sleeve, but the gas in a sip of a carbonated drink cannot physically stretch your sleeve. So really, we need to be mindful of what we're drinking calorie-wise and account for it. Empty calories add up quickly, be they juice, tea, alcohol, whatever. Cheri
  16. @Aginn10 MY tastebuds have not changed at all. I also gave up soda like 2 years before surgery, and it took me a really long time to do it, so I am pretty dedicated to not drinking soda. The only time I have something carbonated is with alcohol, but I don't really drink. I gave up alcohol a few years before surgery also. I did both in an effort to lose weight and be healthy, I wasn't thinking about WLS at the time. When I gave up sugar, alcohol and soda and still wasn't losing weight in large numbers that is one of the things that pushed me to surgery. Taste has nothing to do with not having it, carbonation just involves things that don't benefit me or my goals. If I am going to drink alcohol I have to change my macros and calories for 2 days, it isn't worth wasting the calories on alcohol I could spend on pork chops. I think of my calories as currency, alcohol is a poor value compared to meat. I love food, I'm a foodie. I eat lots of great and interesting stuff. I just refuse to waste calories. I was food snob before and I am more of a food snob now. I was a picky eater before, no leftovers, food has to be piping hot, my food can't touch. Tastebuds are unchanged. Lifestyle is changed.

    NEED HELPFUL TIPS

What are you doing in the gym for 2.5 hours? Maybe that's too long and it causes hunger or the feeling that you can eat those things? I gave up alcohol about a month before surgery. I had a protien shake for breakfast pre op (and now still post op). I would have a snack in the morning a few hours after breakfast and a snack in the afternoon a few hours after lunch. I also used, still do, My Fitness pal, that may stop you from eating poorly. Seeing the calories and fat in these things.

    NEED HELPFUL TIPS

Seashell29's list looks good. My question is whether you've met with a nutritionist? Have you been given some paperwork by your surgeon's office? I don't know how far from surgery you are, but there are usually pretty specific instructions about pre-op diets--many people have to do all liquids; some have protein shakes for breakfast and lunch with a lean dinner. But you should definitely be receiving guidance from your medical team. And I'm pretty sure you know the alcohol and hotwings are not good choices . . .

    NEED HELPFUL TIPS

Well ditch the alcohol..... You don't list what you are eating, so more info is needed from you.
  20. I'm 4'11, 185 pounds BMI 37. I might not have a very high BMI but my co-morbidities tell the story of high blood pressure, type 2 diabetes, sleep apnea, non-alcoholic fatty liver disease...I am sure I am forgetting something. I should have never waited so long to do this, honestly. If I was 300 pounds, I would be a dead woman, I am sure of it. I am a walking stroke. You are young, do this while you can. FED BCBS approved.
  21. I do not think so the most pain is right after surgery and they will keep giving you pain meds until you are comfortable. honestly the headache I had from not giving up caffeine beforehand like I was suppose to do was way worse. Luckily post surgery the nurse messed up brought reg black tea so I sipped on that got rid of it. But you will be just fine. You are right the receptors have changed. Just watch out for alcohol down the road if you struggle with addiction and go to support meetings for bariatrics. I still have to watch sugar, alcohol and as a over a year out can eat more and that is scary. Going to put myself back on soft diet to shrink pouch.
  22. Many chewable vitamins contain sugar alcohols, which are artificial sweeteners that end in "itol" (e.g. xylitol, sorbitol, mannitol). After WLS, these types of vitamins make me nauseous and/or vomit. I can't tolerate sugar alcohols in other products either.
  23. I haven't blacked out but sugar alcohol ( something in sugar free sweeteners) makes me dizzy and I sways and I get the sweats- I have felt like I was going to pass out though . I hope you don't get it again! Mich W Hw 223, SW 217 CW 185 GW 135

    Alcohol, addiction and weight regain

I wish all of you the best in seeking help. Go to AA. The addictive gene that is in our family skipped me, but not my brother and it led to an early death. I was also married to an alcoholic for 18 years and could not take it and divorced him 23 yrs ago - he and his wife are now vicodin addicts and look like walking death. Please get help, don't wait.

    Bile Reflux

I experienced acid reflux (GERD) prior to MGB and took Prilosec for 4 months post-surgery, but now I don't take any PPIs as I no longer have reflux. I also do things to minimize ulcers and reflux, such as no smoking or alcohol, no caffeinated or carbonated beverages, minimal coffee (decaf), and very little sweets or sugar.
