How much restriction from 1st fill?

Well I ate an egg, one slice of toast AND a yogurt. Grr.
3. I'll admit, the Protein is a struggle. a lot of the pureed protein options (tuna, chicken salad) are giving me diarrhea (also had gallbladder out during RNY) and eggs are getting OLD. I do my shake in the morning and yogurts during the day. Eggs when I can stand the thought. It's rarely 4 hours, usually 3. But I wake up feeling really HUNGRY and if it's been 3 hours, there's a good chance I really feel the need to eat.

Your weirdest breakfast?

Brunch of last night's coconut chicken with cilantro and even more lime squirted on for good measure.......yum. Usually I skip breakfast and get hungry mid-day. My husband is consistently hungry at 11:00 and has what Tolkein referred to as "Elevenses." By this time he's already had a big serving of full fat yogurt with a dollop of cherry preserves. After breakfast and elevenses he is looking for lunch. Then tea. Then dinner. Geesh, no wonder I was fat! Not him, though. Genetics, sigh.

Your weirdest breakfast?

I was always a breakfast skipper pre-op, and when I did eat breakfast it was rarely traditional breakfast foods. I usually have a Syntrax Cappuccino iced for breakfast now... but when I have solid food it is still odd stuff. I tend to reverse my lunch and breakfast that I take to work. I will eat the chicken fajitas around 8:00 and then grab the yogurt for lunch. I have eaten Tilapia, the inside of a shrimp taco, Zuchinni lasagna, etc... for breakfast. I think I eat what I had planned to be lunch because I am hungry at breakfast time now. (which undoubtedly has to do with not having the 2-3 cups of coffee I used to need for a morning boost!)

Lactose intolerant post-surgery?

I am almost 16 months post op and I am still lactose intolerant. I can eat cheese and yogurt, but milk makes me rather ill.
7. OK, so I've heard some people become temporarily lactose intolerant post-surgery. It appears that I may be in that category. Yesterday I first tried milk (as part of my protein shakes), and I felt pretty crappy the entire day - extremely gassy on both ends, rumbling stomach, and generally feeling like my stomach was filled with rocks. This morning I drank a 200-ml drinking yogurt (with active cultures, if this makes a difference), and felt fine. Now I'm drinking a protein shake with Lactantia (lactose-free milk) and the rumblings and weird feeling of pressure is back, although so far it seems a bit less intense than yesterday. What gives? How long is it gonna stay that way?:thumbup1:

Would Appreciate Advice

I think the lightheaded or nauseous feeling you're experiencing in the morning is a consequence of low blood sugar. It's a lot easier for it to happen in the am before breakfast, as you had obviously been fasting all night, but it can also occur if you did a lot of exercising without eating much. I've experienced it a few times after early morning spin classes because I only had time for an apple or a yogurt on my way to the gym! I would try having some juice, gatorade, or tea with sugar as soon as you wake up - whatever you can stomach that has some sugar in it.
9. I dunno...do I just cut an paste the code created on LilySlim.com? Well, here goes.... If anyone can lend some advise on how to put this ticker in my blog, profile, signature or wherevers, I'd be grateful. Well, it has been one week since my VSG surgery on 1/17/12. I stopped pain meds night before last. Feel really good. Can bend over and pick things up off the floor with out too much abdominal discomfort. Slept well without meds last night. I feel the need to get moving! Will go for a nice long slow walk tomorrow and even drive tomorrow. So excited. So glad, so happy. I put beneprotein in everything, well except water. However, the only 'everything' I've had since surgery is protein shakes, yogurt, strained miso soup, and tonight my buddy gave me a packet of dried hot sour soup, which I strained, and I put 2 scoops in 8oz. Have only drank 4 ozs of it for one meal today (saving the rest for next meal). Not at all physically hungry. Mentally hungry? No not much, but heck I wouldn't dare jeopardize anything to thwart the success of my weight loss goals with my new sleeved tool! I would like to thank having to take chewable vitamins for getting to chew and crunch on something.

VSG Eating at 1yr-2yr post-op

I have found that 4-6 ounces of Protein is the right amount to keep me satisfied for about 3-4 hours. I can eat more of some items but dense protein (beef, chicken, seafood) fills me up and I stay satisfied longer. If I do yogurt or protein shakes I find that I am hungrier sooner.
11. I think the gas pains are all gone now. Really, i think it might not have been gas that was causing pain, but rather my diaphram from being blown up. I feel pretty good right now, had an oxy about an hour ago, and have started drinking my Protein 2.0 water. I can tolerate little sips, but nothing more. May wait till tomorrow to try yogurt or pudding. All in all, the Hernia pain seems more than the sleeve pain. Standing up or sitting down takes a lot as it is very painful. But, i'm doing it. Taking small walks downstairs or just down the hallway. Excited to see the weight shedding. I gained 10lbs in the hospital, and have already lost 3lbs from peein. The stomach needles for the blood thinner isn't as bad as I thought they would be. Thanks to everyone for their support on this site.

Sick of tuna kits for lunch!

I have the option of cooking at work as we're there for 12 hours, so you may not be able to cook at work. But here are some things I eat at work. Corned beef cooked in a crockpot, Sauteed shrimp over spaghetti squash, Avocado's, cheese sticks, Greek yogurt, oatmeal, Clif bars, Fresh fruit (grapes, blueberries, raspberries, bananas, apples ) If you like fish and have access to a Long John Silvers, they have a "hold the batter" cod plate thats really good and healthy. Wendy's chili is pretty good. Thats about the extent of fast food for me. Wednesday at home I made a big pot of Lentils with some onions/smoked jowl pieces and seasoning and had it all day. ( and still have some ) Thursday I took some Flounder filets, and we steamed them with some veggies at work.
13. Hi all! Karen here from Pennsylvania. I had my lap band surgery last Dec. on the 16th after trying way too many costly weight loss options that never worked, including about $900 on hcg injections. I'm the only patient in my county who has Hashimoto's hypothyroid autoimmune condition so my doctor says I'm "special" because he's the only doctor who has a patient with this condition, so he gets to report back on my progress, which so far seems to be going really, really slow. I lost 15# in the first month and another 3# in the second month and nothing since, despite two fills, the second of which was just last month. The only difference I've notice is that I have to eat a lot slower, especially my scrambled eggs & cheese, so it takes me longer to eat. Since I have this autoimmune condition which is accompanied by a gluten intolerance, I rarely if ever eat any breads. My menu is so simple it's pathetic: gluten free Chex Cereal or eggs & cheese for Breakfast, brown rice & peas for lunch and again for dinner and an apple and yogurt with each meal. Evening snack, 1-2 bags of microwave popcorn. That's pretty much it. My doctor says that's fine as long as I take Vitamins. I just started my exercising again last week so I'm hopeful that adding an hour mixed cardio and stretching will help speed up the process but I'm not going to stress over it. I'm eating healthy and not overeating and I'm exercising, and right now I can't afford a third fill on the band so I'll just have to be happy with whatever my body decides to do, right? So anyway, glad to have found you all! I get busy with a couple of home businesses so I'm not sure how often I'll get here but keep up the great work everyone!

Make your environment conducive to weight loss

The big losers do not necessarily have more willpower or desire. The important difference between the big losers and the re-gainers may be how easy they find the journey to be. Surprisingly, you can control a large part of how easy or hard it is to lose weight. The weight loss journey is not just about changing your digestive system through surgery. It is also about changing your entire lifestyle to facilitate weight loss. Weight Loss Surgery is a Weight Loss Tool, Not a Cure Weight loss surgery is a tool. It can make you less hungry by reducing the size of your stomach by inserting a band around your stomach (Lap-band), removing the majority of your stomach pouch (vertical sleeve gastrectomy) or folding or stapling away the majority of your stomach pouch (gastric bypass, duodenal switch, and sleeve plication). The vertical sleeve gastrectomy reduces hunger by reducing the amount of ghrelin, a hunger hormone, that your stomach produces. The gastric bypass and duodenal switch reduce nutrient absorption. All of these surgeries can help you eat less and lose weight, but none of these surgeries are fail-proof. You can “cheat” by eating high-calorie foods, drinking high-calorie beverages, drinking beverages while you eat solid foods, and eating without measuring your portions. Successful weight loss requires good choices on your part, and making good choices is easier if you focus on your entire lifestyle, not just the part of your digestive system that was changed with surgery. The Influence of Your Surroundings on Your Weight Think about this scenario. You leave home without breakfast and order a muffin and ice coffee at the drive-through on your way to work. You grab a doughnut at your morning meeting, and go out for lunch with your friends. You order the lunch special with a salad, breadstick, fettuccine alfredo and cheesecake. You nibble on some chocolates from your secretary’s desk as you make your way to the vending machine for a soda in the afternoon. You pick up a pizza on your way home because you know that there is nothing else for dinner. Now compare it to this second scenario. You wake up early to meet your friend for a walk before you get home for a breakfast of scrambled egg whites and spinach. You drive to work and have yogurt and some fruit at your morning meeting. Lunch with your coworkers consists of a green salad with canned tuna, and you have a hard-boiled egg for your afternoon snack. You are able to get dinner on the table quickly when you get home because you only need to defrost the meals that you prepared earlier in the week. Which scenario do you think you can help you lose weight? The second one, of course. So why not make it a reality? Do Your Surroundings Encourage Weight Loss or Weight Gain? You have battled your weight for years, if not for your entire life before weight loss surgery. In all likelihood, your environment was set up for you to eat. Take a good, hard look at your environment. Is it more like the first scenario or the second one described above? You have the ability to make it more like the second one. Notice the following items from the two scenarios. Exercise was automatic in the second one because you planned to meet a friend – so you couldn’t back out. Preparing your dinners ahead of time meant that you could eat quickly without going to a fast food restaurant. Packing your own snacks meant that you did not have to eat a doughnut in your morning meeting or chocolates in the afternoon. Make the “Right” Choice Automatic The fewer tough choices you have, the less likely you are to make poor decisions. Set up your environment so that the healthier actions are easier. To make healthy eating easier: Prepare plenty of meals ahead of time so that you always have a ready-to-eat, healthy option to prevent you from opting for take-out. Throw away the take-out menus that you used to store in the kitchen. The extra time it takes you to look up the phone numbers and menus online may be enough to let you come to your sense and realize that you don’t want fast food. Keep your kitchen stocked with all kinds of healthy foods, so that no matter your craving, you have a healthy answer. Do not keep unhealthy foods at home. If they are not there, you cannot eat them. Make sure that the healthy option is the default option. For example, measure your cheese and cut and wash fruits and vegetables ahead of time so that it is easier to snack on them than on cookies. Also consider these ideas: Meet your friends for walks or shopping trips instead of for meals at restaurants. Park your car a few blocks away from work so that you have no choice but to walk those few blocks again at the end of the day as you leave work. Do not drive past drive-thrus if they are too tempting. Also, do not keep money in the car, and consider removing your car’s cup holders so that eating in the car is no longer an option. All weight loss surgery patients have their own struggles. Far from being wimpy, removing these obstacles rather than fighting them is the best way to overcome them. The weight loss journey path will always have speed bumps and potholes, but it will be a lot smoother if you set up your lifestyle to promote better choices all day.

What Can You Eat Post-Op?

I was able to have protein drinks the day I came home. I was eating mushies at 1 1/2 to two weeks and soft at 3 weeks. I bought several different protein drinks, crystal light, milk, yogurt, broths and soups ( which I blended to make smooth) Good luck!

What is a "Slider" food?

This is also why some doctors will tell you to limit your usage of yogurt, protein shakes, etc. if you get to a certain point and stall. Even though they can be good sources of protein, it's harder to overeat dense protein.

Pain!

my doctor is very precise. day 1-7 Clear liquids... day 8-14 full liquids... then for 2 weeks pureed... and for the final two weeks mushes. I started full liquids today and it includes cream of wheat and yogurts so I'm good.

DELICIOUS protein shake!

Made this last night & it was HEAVEN! Peanut Brittle Protein shake 1 1/2 C milk + cold Water 1 serving vanilla protein powder 1 1/2 T dry sugarfree butterscotch pudding mix 1 T peanutbutter I threw in a few icecubes & blended away in my NutriBullet. You can't even taste the funk of the protein powder! It is yum! I do not have PB2 yet- but will lighten this up when I get some. I also am going to play with adding a cup of greek yogurt and freeze it. Would be an awesome icecream treat!
19. Your ability to tolerate liquids will increase. If Protein shakes are giving you trouble, check with your doctor for other options (For a couple days I refused to eat anything because I HATED the shakes). He switched me to greek yogurts and a special low carb/high protein milk to replace the shakes, and I felt better. Don't be afraid to collaborate with your doctor to find a successful plan for you (just make sure it's with your doc, not solely with random internet posters). Also, breathe. It gets better, I promise.

Are protein shakes considered a meal?

yes, i count my shakes as a meal - especially b/c of the calorie count. I also blend in 4-5 ice cubes, a small yogurt and some times a banana. then i pour it into my tallest reusable coffe mug w/lid from DDs and leave it in the freezer until i'm walking out the door. That way, i can drink it "like coffee" in the morning...in the car or at my desk at work. Works like a charm!!

Yogurt Melts

Sounds great! After 8 months since surgery greek yogurt is still my favorite food but miss my ice cream sooo much. Freezing it sounds like a winner...Thanks!
23. Hi everyone, I just had a question that you guys may know the answer to. Or maybe someone is dealing with this too? I was sleeved 11/30. My surgery went great and I am losing weight well. However, on Monday I ate a piece of soft tofu and steamed broccoli. (I have been eating soft foods since week 3- per my Surgeons orders.) 10 minutes later, I had severe abdominal pain that radiated to my back. I vomited just a little and had to go to the ER. The pain went away after 40 minutes. Had a CT and labs done. Everything was normal. No gallstones, no leak, no elected liver enzymes. Potassium was a little low. The doctors just called it gastritis. I saw my surgeon the day after and he said it was very hard to get gastritis while taking nexium or any PPI. Got an ultrasound done which really didn't show anything. So since then, I've been eating fine (miso Soup, soft seafood, Protein shakes, yogurt, light cheese). Until today... I had 1 scrambled egg (which I usually eat). 10 minutes later, I had the same attack. Severe pain, nausea... No vomiting though. The pain went away within 15 minutes. Does anyone have any idea what this could be? My sleeve is great, no leak, healed staple line. Gallbladder is fine- no stones. And each time this happened, I did not overeat.

Meal Schedule

This meal issue post op is puzzling to me, but I guess it's because every doctor is different. My post-op diet is to have clear liquids for 10 days, and another 10 of liquids along with protein shakes, milk, yogurt, and jello... I cannot eat mushies till day 21... It's interesting to see that everyone starts food at different times post-op.
25. I'm on my pre-op diet and have had a headache all day. Anyone else experience this? Also my list states I can consume low calorie yogurt, how many grams of sugar would be ok though? Thank yoy. Sent from my SM-G925V using the BariatricPal App
