    Protein drinks other than shakes

I can't stand the pre-made shakes. I've been making my own shakes with skim milk, greek yogurt, some instant espresso dissolved in a little warm water, & a scoop of vanilla protein powder. The powder doesn't taste so sweet with the other stuff cutting it & the coffee flavor keeps me happy first thing in the morning. I've also used unflavored protein powder a couple of times with skim milk & yogurt & a little Mio or Crystal Light mix & that gives me an even less sweet drink.

    1 day post open, home

I am on soft solid stage 1. Greek yogurt, fat free re fried Beans or beans chewed really well, pudding, Protein shakes, scrambled eggs, cheese. I was told to try 1 new item per meal to make sure that my body can handle it. In 3-4 days I progress to soft solids stage 2, ground beef, lunch meat, chicken, cooked veggies. That is my life for the first month!! They said to take a small bite, chew really well and wait 1-4 minutes to make sure that your body is accepting the texture. It should take 15 mins to eat the few oz of food at each meal! Good luck on everything!! SW:327 CW:239 GW:155 Heather in Texas

    Frustrated

To Kimberly1184: A NUT that strict may be trying to keep you from indulging in mashed potatoes or oatmeal or other starchy stuff. Hang in there. You will be on regular foods in no time. To Jlnrgn: Shame on folks who can't have you over just to enjoy your company. They are small-minded to not accomodate you. While everone else is eating roast beef, you could be sipping on broth. They haven't heard of steamed veggies? When they are eating strawberry shortcake, you could nibble a couple of berries in Greek yogurt. Well, instead of waiting for an invitation, throw a festive soire yourself where you can control what you eat. Oh, by the way, don't invite them. After all, if they can't eat steamed veggies, softly roasted meat (or its broth) or fresh berries, they shouldn't come anyway.

    Salt and Artificial Sweetener

Thanks, Nash! That will honestly make life much easier for me after surgery. One of the foods our nutritionist recommends is unsweetened, fat-free Greek yogurt. I simply can't get it down without a few packets of Sweet N' Low!

    VITAMINS AFTER GASTRIC SLEEVE?????

Vitamin consumption has been sorta difficult for me. I was on the chewables following the surgery until the 2 month period, when I switched to capsules. (For the record, the chewables were not my favorite and I was elated to switch to capsules). The only one that I find that makes me sick now can by the multi-vitamin that I take in the mornings. I've had to empty it into yogurt or blend it with a shake. Otherwise, after 20 minutes or so, I feel really nauseous and often throw up.

    How Not To Scarf...?

In my pre-op nutrition class, we were told to buy demitasse spoons and cocktail forks and to use 4 ounce ramekins to hold the food for the first couple of months. I do this for everything that I eat, including yogurt, etc. Having the smaller spoons and forks really, really helps keep the bites small. I did find myself putting another bite into my mouth before I had even swallowed the first bite, so now, I put the utensil down and don't pick it up again until I have swallowed. If it's a new food I am trying, I take a bite, chew really well, swallow and wait a minute or two just to make sure it's going to settle fine. So far, everything has settled well except for Peanut Butter. But, I just started on solid foods so I'm sure there will be some other foods that I will introduce that won't be that kind to me. There rae also some foods that I used to love, that I have no desire to try now, like bananas. I also used to crave salty and savory items like nuts and chips and have absolutely no cravings any longer - which is a good thing! I can actually gulp Water down without an issue so I still tend to drink fast, but I've not had any issues with it -- not even gas, so I haven't changed that.
  7. I've been having a diet hot chocolate. 20 cal. 4g of sugar. I add a table spoon of whey protein to get a little protein in. But... I haven't gone back to work yet. I do Monday. A little worried bout the daily avalanche of goodies brought in by my peers. I will remind my self that nothing taste as good as healthy and slim. Also gerber baby food has these little yogurt melt snacks. They are low sugar and fat free. I might grab a bag of those and keep them handy in case I need a substitute.

    Protein Yogurt

Sounds delicious, the cauliflower recipe. I could also try adding preserves to the plain greek yogurt. Thanks. How is your knee BTW??

    Protein Yogurt

Sure, why not? It seems like we are going everywhere else! We need to try that Greek Yogurt since everyone seems to keep raving about it. There is a Trader Joe's in the city I drive to when I go out of town to shop, but I always think I should bring a cooler, but never remember to do it.

    Frozen Yogurt In Shakes?

Your pre-op diet will depend on your surgeon and nutritionist. I am not allowed to add frozen yogurt or fruit to my shakes. My mom, who had lapband surgery a few years ago, was allowed to have fruit with hers.

    Food Suggestions Needed Please

Keep in mind that the liquid portion of the soup will fill you up fast so you may not get in your protein requirement this way. If you can't eat solids yet don't push yourself stick with softer foods; cottage cheese, greek yogurt, canned tuna/salmon, pureed beans(chick peas have the lowest amount of protein by the way), soft fish, thin soups with protein powder(easy to get down). Skip ALL of the crackers, useless food right now. I also try to have a protein shake in the morning with at least 30 grams of protein and then I am half way there at least for the day.

    Food Suggestions Needed Please

My NUT suggested adding a bit of gravy to meats to make them moister. I eat a lot of Greek yogurt and cottage cheese. Have you tried refried Beans.
  13. I hear you. I also have a date in July, 12th. I am having all sorts of feelings and emotions. But I think it is mostly happiness and excitement. Buying all these Protein powders, thinking, thinking and more thinking. Trying out different foods and yogurts which I don't really like. So this is going to be such a drastic change, but I believe it will be worth it in the end. So i wish you well. and you can do it. Just put your mind to it and stay focused. My hardest part, I think, is going to be to motivate myself to exercise and I know I definitely want to do that because it will help but also so that I don't become all flabby. But thats what's going to be very difficult for me. Is your doc putting you on a 3 week pre-op diet of Protein shakes, etc? Curious. K

    What have I done?

I am right with you! I am full of regrets myself. My doctor is cold and makes me feel like I'm stupid so I don't ask questions. I ended up with problems with my left lung that caused it to close up and fluid build up around it. The surgeon who put in my chest tube said it was from getting bumped around in the surgery. My stomach burns sometimes horribly or I throw up foam. I am staying nauseous lately so I fight to get in 40 g of protein. I had my surgery 12/29/14. I have no energy and have been trying to find any options for a reversal or as much of one as I can get. I can't even finish a 5oz Greek yogurt and only nuts for solids without throwing up. So, yes I regret this decision even more than both ex-husbands!!! I've lost 47 lbs but the vomiting and chest tube were NOT worth it. I'm miserable. Will I ever be able to eat food again??

    I want pureed food!

I have done 2 weeks of clear fluids and am now on 2 weeks of full fluids which includes thinned down Greek yogurt, puréed soup and Protein shakes. I was sleeved February 9th. After I finish 2 weeks of full fluids I move on to soft foods for a minimum of 2 weeks and then to solids. It's weird how every surgeon seems to have a different plan of attack for getting back to eating. I think my surgeon works really hard at having us create good habits which helps with our long term success. I agree though I don't care to ever consume broth or Jello again!! Good uck and just try to keep really focused on the process.

You can still have a peach yogurt smoothie! Torani has a sugar free peach flavoring: http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_ss_i_1_12?url=search-alias%3Daps&field-keywords=torani%20peach%20sugar%20free&sprefix=Torani+peach%2Caps%2C142

    More Questions

I'm technically not supposed to have oatmeal but I was out of cream of wheat I can only have protein such as pureed chicken ,tuna salad, chicken salad, egg salad Egg drop soup, scrambled eggs, yogurt cottage cheese, no carbs, no sugar,no vegetables, no fruit I Have lost 19 pounds in 3 weeks
  19. His plan is pretty quick - Water, Jello, popsicles days 1 - 4, then add in Protein drinks, thinned-down cream Soups, and yogurt days 4 - 6. Weeks 2 & 3 are mushies. I'm not too sure about beyond then, I only studied 2 weeks out. This water thing is killing me. There's already a 30ish pound difference in the scale, and I truly beliee at least 80% of that is dehydration. I'm accustomed to 120+ oz water a day, and I've been lucky to get about 30. I've started getting yuck mouth.
  20. I am 4 days post surgery. I have NO energy...I know that I didn't have a lot before the surgery because of the weight, but I had more than this. I am walking around the house as much as I can. I am drinking my Protein Shakes, lots of Water, some tea. I have eaten some yogurt, applesauce, and broth. All of which is on my instructions. I would like to be doing some normal things, Am I rushing it ? Any advice is welcome. I know I am still on the liquid diet and that is fine, but I want to be able to do more. I really don't see how people go back to work at this stage...I am a teacher, so thankfully, I have the summer to recover and get used to my new lifestyle. I can't get the ticker tracker to show up on here!!
  21. Hello , Sorry again I have more questions.I am 5 days post operative. I haven't had any nausea or vomiting fluids and pureed food go down fine. Today for breakfast I had about 3 ounces of oatmeal. Lunch I had about 3 ounces of egg drop soup. For dinner I had 3 ounces of low fat yogurt and later 3 ounces of low fat cottage cheese. This seems like a lot of food. Is this normal for most or to much?
  22. Its my husbands first day home and 3rd day post op he is very happy to be home, but I have noticed its a little harder to keep him drinking fluids at home. I have enlisted the help of our kids, every time they walk by dad they ask him if he has drank something. It seems to be helping we went for a slow walk around our neighborhood park and he did great, the more he walks the easier it is to pass his gas, which means less belly pain. He is having sugar free jello 2oz every 15 min and will have some pain yogurt later today. He is trying to sleep but in a house with 3 kids, its a little hard. Hopefully this means he will sleep through the night. good luck to all the post ops and the future ops, your future is in your hands
  23. I feel lucky with my pre-op diet after reading through this. I get to have an egg and/or yogurt or toast or Protein shake or bar, followed by a Protein Shake, then 4 to 6 oz of meat and a vegetable and then a protein shake for dinner. Had a few tough moments but this seemed to be more of a "practice" time for after than anything else. Although I am 12 days in (with a day "off" for Thanksgiving and a couple of slip ups) and down 6.4 lbs so it must be working. I am with Dr. Marsden in Argyle, TX - he is one of the top docs which is why I picked him. He is pretty laid back and his staff is terrific. I am really hungry today, but I now know I need to keep my complaining to a minimum Hang in there!!! Sending positive thoughts!!
  24. Advice please. Today was my first day home, after 2 nights in hospital, it's bedtime here now. Today I have managed quite a lot of water, a cup of tea, quarter cup of tomato soup and a yogurt. Am I pushing it too much? I'm on full liquids for 2-4 weeks. I feel rubbish but I think that's a combination of migraine, sore incisions and gas. What should I be doing at this stage? Thanks
  25. i'd check with your doc because mine doesn't allow oatmeal or chicken salad yet. i have to be on mushies for 2 weeks before i can have it. i've been eating cottage cheese doubles, yogurt, campbell's select Soups, mashed potatoes/sweet potatoes and creamed spinach from boston market, pastina (not filling though so i only had it once), runny scrambled eggs, farina, Water based Protein shakes.
