    Discouraged - Need support

LB, I can't address all the things you mentioned, although it sounds alot like MY life. But, you're doing fine! You've already lost 10 lbs. in less than a month. That's 2-1/2 lbs per week. The doctors generally recommend 1-2 lbs per week. I won't give you the exercise speech because you already KNOW what you need to do. But, I will remind you that you'll lose inches faster if you're moving! And, the clothes will fit looser faster!!! Just be patient with your body. It needs time to heal. Just keep following your doctors instructions. Come in here anytime you need a boost, or just come in a visit. You can make some good friends here. I didn't keep my band a secret, but I don't have anyone close by that has been banded. I wish I did. When I go to lunch with my friends, I feel strange eating with them. I would suggest going to some of the support meetings and meeting others who are banded. That way you have someone to talk to, or go to lunch with, etc. that understands. Brighter days are ahead. You'll see when you go back next week for a fill. Good luck to you.

Picked up a new hobby after getting a new me...

Walking along with the usual weighing all my food and tracking. I used to walk with weights until I injured myself. Not worth it for me, an injury sets you back. And my Dr friend told me off about doing. It isn't really necessary. I maintained my muscle by eating 1 gram of protein for 1 pound of lean muscle mass, every day. I've lost 180 pounds and only 10 of that has been muscle. I still have 125 pounds of lean mass.

  4. Hi everyone, I am so upset. I had my surgery on Thursday 10/22 and it was scheduled for outpatient meaning I could stay in the hospital if it was less than 24 hrs. Well my lb procedure took longer and the surgeon had to repair a severe hiatal hernia, and do a liver biopsy too. When I was released to go home I told the nurse I was ready to leave and she said not to worry I was just in observance and not using all the 24 hrs. Anyway when I got home today my insurance carrier sent me some standard form letter saying I was denied inpatient and they only approved outpatient. I called them and they said someone called the next day to get me inpatient status which this letter is saying they denied. I told the rep I was outpatient the whole time and she said if that was the case then it would be paid. But this letter said my inpatient status was denied. It said I would have been granted inpatient status if I had terrible pain, vomiting and nausea which I had all three of~! Has this happened to anyone else? I am so upset. Of course the hospital and the surgeons office was closed by this time. Please give me any advice and send your prayers and good thoughts my way. I am trying to put this in Gods hands but it is very hard to not worry!

    Appearing smaller than you are

Well, I think there is a medical reason for some of this.. if you have been obese for decades, your bones, your blood vessels and internal organs have adapted for that. They don't necessarily shrink was you lose weight. There is a a couple of pounds of extra skin maybe (I had 5.5# of skin removed since i didn't have excess fat by the time I had plastics). So, maybe that accounts for 10-12# in total (that is a wild guess for purposes of discussion only). I think the more significant issue is the whole vanity sizing and resetting of what "normal" looks like. when I weighed say 150-155 my sister was convinced I was like 125-130#. I think it is because over the decades our whole population got bigger and we are just used to thinking that "a bit overweight" is a normal weight. I have slim friends, who have never been heavy and they tend to guess my weight pretty accurately in the upper 130s to 140s range. I am shocked that I wear such small size pants. Then, I went to the most crazy vanity sized store ever - White House Black Market and noticed all the 0 and 00 clothes. Oh, I get it, I wear a loose size 2 pants there and so they had to make up new negative sizing for slimmer ladies. In most stores, I wear size 4 (sometimes a 6 if a designer brand) pants which I still think is a crazy size for someone who weighs in the 140s. When I was in my 20s at this weight I wore 9/10. Anyway, we have just reset our ideas of what a "normal" weight looks like in my opinion. I don't really care until I start getting criticized for being too thin. Seriously? My BMI is 23ish... I look at my own pix, I am far from too thin.
  6. I am five weeks out from surgery. I'm losing steadily, and have fortunately not had any stalls that last more than a couple of days. Hope I didn't just jinx myself. Here are some of my NSVs: I had knee caps under all that padding I had to sleep last night with a pillow between my knees (I sleep on my side) because my knee bones were crunching each other. LOL. I walked laps at the hospital where I work today and not once did I feel out of breath My knee arthritis is not hurting me at all right now. Before surgery I was so in pain that I dreaded going up and down the stairs in our house. My seat belt doesn't ride up into my neck because of so much stomach and boob. It stays nicely in place. Getting out of the tub doesn't take 10 minutes anymore. I have a lap for my dogs to sit in. I am down from a 3X to a 1X and even they are starting to get baggy. My bra straps keep sliding down to my elbows (shopping this weekend!!!) I don't want to cry when I go to find clothes. I'm still in the plus size, but I know they will fit now. I used to get so upset and give up when even the 3X clothes felt tight. I'm sure there are more, but these are the things that I was excited about today. This is such a wonderful adventure. Now that I am eating soft foods and tolerating them well, I am starting to feel so much better. It's easier to get Protein in and I'm doing better with fluids. I think I'm going to make it!!! My mid-term goal is to be in regular ladies sizes when I buy a dress for my cousin's wedding in August. Hope you are all having great NSVs too! Lisa

    Drinking and Sleeve Postop

The main problem that people have with drinking post-op is due to swelling or spasms during the healing process. Not everyone runs into that though. Your capacity for liquids is not at ALL reflective of the size of your sleeve. Did you have a leak test post-op? I did and I could see quite clearly the way the barium went straight through my sleeve. Liquids just pass right through. Once you move on to purees and solids, you will DEFINITELY start to feel the restriction, since those things will actually sit in your stomach for some period of time. Here's a video of a gastric sleeve swallow test. You can see that the video is only 19 seconds long and the liquid just flows right through: http://youtu.be/K0GWL1Wtx30

    head hunger or physical???

I can't eat in the morning due to my pills getting stuck though I have an Unjury shake. I get really, really hungry about 2 p.m. so I have breakfast. I don't seem to have head hunger. I'm really hungry. So I eat breakfast at 2-3 p.m. and then dinner at about 6-7 and then I'm hungry about 3-4 hours later so I snack late at night. I eat nuts, cheese and protein except for the ice cream cone I have every night. I love that ice cream cone. I don't care if it's fattening. But that may explain why I lost 40 pounds and stopped. I have weighed the same for a year--no further weight loss. I figure it cost me about $250 per pound so far. I'd really like to lose 10 more pounds so it will only have cost me $200. But on the bright side, I only take 1/2 of my diabetes pill now. If I take a whole one, my blood sugar drops too much. Things are better.

    Is this normal?

Probably a .5cc fill. What size band do you have. I don't think I would have been able to take a 5.0 cc in my 10 cc bandthe first month, my first fill was at 6 weeks 1.0cc . I was tight after each fill. Lost gradually. I have had 9 of them. Currently have 9cc in a 10 cc band and very tight in the morning till about 11. Excellent!! 14 months out 8 lbs to goal.

  14. Hi everyone, I'm New to BariatricPal but many posts have been very helpful throughout my short journey. I can't wait to continue being motivated by reading about everyone else's struggles similar to mine and success stories I aspire to accomplish. Best of luck to all! So today is my 10th day post op, & had an appointment with my NUT i was hoping she'd say I was good for mushy foods because I was so sick of protein shake at this point. 2 weeks pre op & 10 days post op liquid diet. Turns out she did give me the go ahead and I went home for some beans and low fat melted cheese... First, the cheese didn't melt all the way (gross) almost like imitation cheese. Second, the moment I ate the first baby spoon I immediately had gas like lil burp bubbles coming up. It continued for the whole 1st ounce and the 1/2 ounce after that was fine but I did have a slight stomach ache afterwards that took me to the restroom. I'm a lil scared it might have been too soon to go off liquids, I'm so sick of protein shakes and was looking forward to some kind of food other than broth. How was your first experience??? Should I hold off on trying again or is this a normal reaction?

    From Hospital to Home….

A few things it would have been nice to know. 1) I had to sleep propped up, like in the hospital bed. 2)Sleeping on my side was OUT, for the 1st 3 weeks. 3) I hated the world for that 1st week. I wanted to fight everyone and everything! 4) It's going to be a struggle to drink enough. Just keep sipping all day. 5) Wear the elastic support band, all day every day. I wore mine for the 1st month - I was just a little OCD about it. 6) By day 10 most all discomfort was gone and I was out and about. Went back to work on day 11. 7) And most important - I no longer had food craving or really even cared about food anymore! Goodbye head hunger!

    Newly Banded

My doctor gave me the okay to start cardio exercise 1 week post-op. She told me to go ahead and start slow enough that I could hold a regular conversation with someone while on the treadmill or walking without needing to take deep breaths or gasp for air. 10-15 minutes to start, 1-2 times a day. Stop if you feel uncomfy, just listen to your body. More vigorous exercise that use your abs or include high intensity workouts or lifting weights shouldn't happen until at least 6 weeks post-op, or until you're given the okay by your doctor. But during the next 5 weeks, if you feel good enough, you can increase your cardio time to 30minutes at a time. Check with your doctor first, of course, but this is just what my doc told me! Hope everything goes well!

    HALLOWEEN COSTUMES?

Halloween has always been my favorite holiday and now it's my anniversary as well. It's our first anniversary but probably not going to do anything since I spent our anniversary money on surgery LOL. Next year though , there are going to be some rocking costumes since we will both be close to goal. We got married in Vegas and I want to spend our second anniversary in Vegas again doing all the cool stuff. HW 385 SW 359 Sleeved 10/5/16

And to top it off it will be a 10-17hr flight home (with layovers and plane changes:(

    Drainage

Thank you for replying. The drainage has just about stopped now but boy it sure did scare me. They said 10 days for stitches to come out, it will be 7 days tomorrow, I'm making an appt to have them out. My port is to the left. I'm sure I'm OK and nothing to worry about.

    Sleep Apnea & Anasthesia

You are worrying too much. Make sure that they are aware you have sleep apnea but know that the people taking care of you are professionals. You won't be the first person that's had anesthesia and suffers from sleep apnea-I actually have it too and had my revision surgery done on 10/18/16. They will be monitoring you the entire time so don't drive yourself to crazy with worry. It won't help! Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App
  21. Why can't you go back and get your fill early? Why do you have to wait until March? I started booking my next appt 2 weeks after my fill in case I didn't feel restriction. I just had my 3rd fill, 5.5cc in a 10 cc band and now feel restriction. I will see how it goes and if I am still feeling restriction next week I will cancel my appt and make it for a later date.

    I miss my pain meds!

Are you getting up and around? I was done on the 27th and given 40 oxycodone and haven't even used half. I take Tylenol as needed (1-2 times a day) but I've been up and about since day 4 and at first it sucked but I think it's what helped with my pain. My only pain left is abdominal wall below my largest incision and its a 1/10, 99% of the time. I have also used a heating pad since the day I got home, it lived on me the first 48 hrs I was home and now as needed (note: don't fall asleep with it on I actually left marks, they faded but essentially I burnt myself) If you continue to be in pain I would call back and demand an appt at this point you should definitely be turning a corner. Do you know how many doses you had? I'm just curious if you used too much too fast and they are resistant to fill because of that.

    Vacation

I had a BLAST on my 2 part vacation! I ate SO many carbs, drank PLENTY of cocktails, ate LOTS of sugar, exercised 0 times, didn't lose an ounce, but I didn't gain either! I danced the night away and rode a roller coaster for the first time in over 10 years. Love my sleeve! Back to reality now though lol. Now I'm back home and ready to get back in the gym!

    Exercise

Not sure where to post this and I looked for the exercise thread, can't seem to find it though. Anyone else have terrible shin splints from Running? I started walking April 2nd and added running into part of my routine last week. I have tried warming up, stretching, squats, anti-inflammatory, pain meds, creams, lotions UGH :help: Any other solutions that might help? I can run 3-5 min and Im ok, then I walk when I get tired, run again and BAMMMM killer shin splints that I have to slow down and walk out and wait 5-10 min of walking again. Maybe 80 oz of Water daily or 900 cal isn't enough with this much exercise? I am burning 140 calories on average each time.
