  1. Happy Thanksgiving everyone! I am looking specifically for a group of people to chat with who are at a minimum 1 year or more out from gastric bypass or band to bypass. Seems we have a ton of newbies (which is awesome), but looking to hear from those out further in their journey. Currently in a major stall, working on focusing food intake as the key source of my stall. Pretty demotivated but no major weight gain. Been on this weight loss journey for so many years (2007 lap/2015 rev to GB). Is there anyone out there like me?
  2. Hi. I had the gastric sleeve on July 18, 2016. I was on hydroclorothiazide for over a year before surgery. By October 2016 my bp dropped so on November 8th (2 weeks ago) my primary doctor told me to stop the hydroclorothiazide because my bp was so low. Since the surgery I had lost 55 pounds. I was steadily losing weight. My surgery weight was 297 and my lowest weight so far is 241, 3 and a 1/2 months after surgery. I am no where near goal. After I stopped the hydroclorothiazide, I gained 8 pounds in two weeks!! I only eat about 800-900 calories a day. I literally cry because I don't know what to do. I even walk between 1 and 2 miles a day to try and keep the weight away. I went back to the doctor to see if he will put me back on the hydroclorothiazide but he won't. Please, anyone has experienced this, how much did you gain and when did you start losing again. I'm thinking about lowering my calories to 500-600 a day to see if that will kick start my weight LOSS again Sent from my iPad using the BariatricPal App
  3. What a great article.!! Makes me feel a little better knowing there are so many factors that may contribute to weight gain. I'm looking forward to my "fizz" scan next week. At least I'll finally know what the problem is with my 6 month weight stall. I have to learn to stop focusing on the negatives & get my mind in a more positive frame of mind! 4. I had my daughter in March and started the program in June. I also stopped breastfeeding in June. So naturally I had weight gain. 15 pounds. I have been fighting hard to loose it since. I lost 6 pounds in the following months. So I am showing a 9 pound gain and suppose to be submitting to insurance next week. I met with my surgeon yesterday but he didn't mention the gain or that it was an issue. He told me in the beginning of program that insurance only looks at starting number. He also has to perform surgery on a severe incisional hernia at the same time. So I'll need surgery no matter what. I met with my nutritionist today ( last appt of 4) and she seems to be concerned about the gain and insurance approval. She mentioned it to the office lady and I'm afraid she's going to note the gain in my request to insurance and I'll be denied. She told me my insurance won't tolerate a gain. . I'm getting conflicting info and the only thing I can do is wait for insurance to come back. I'm just wondering if anyone else had a gain and was still able to be approved? I was excited yesterday and totally discouraged and upset today. Now I'm going to be freaking out for the next few weeks. Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App
  5. This WLS is a life long process. We just shift from loss to maintain modes. We must watch and manage our food and activity daily, else the two headed dragon of weight gain will catch back up with us very quickly. I sill have a short while to go till I hit maintenance, but know it will take a while to correctly dial in my diet and watch daily to insure I never fall back again. As a note: My son had sleeve 3 years ago, and stopped his diet management about a year ago, thinking he knew what was needed. He has gained back 30 lbs. and I hope he gets back on track before it gets too far away from him. Good Luck

    Bypass or sleeve?

I chose the sleeve, because the complications and malabsorption with bypass always bothered me. When I heard the sleeve was proven effective I knew it was the one for me if I was going surgery route. I first attempted to lose on my own a few years back. I also have hormonal conditions such as autoimmune thyroid and PCOS, which lead me to believed I had malabsorption issues just from things I noticed with how I felt. They did confirm when they did Vitamin levels that I was deficient in several and close to being deficient in one. I feel more comfortable giving my body the change to absorb as much as it can by still having my stomach and not re-routing GI tract and lose/maintain healthy weight at the same time. Plus, I've never been fixated on being an unrealistic weight goal or loss. I am very realistic - my goal was in line with the weight range my dietitian gave me which will still have me in the obese category technically for my height... I'm looking to be healthier, more mobile, and have more strength not to be thin per se or a certain pant size. Lastly, I had hoped to avoid as much distress of loose skin, and thought I'd be better with sleeve since my end goal after surgery would still be quite overweight. I've lost around 7% so far of my body weight at a normal, healthy rate, and honestly I've already started noticing changes with my skin. When I lost significant weight (almost 100lbs) a few years back I had virtually no loose skin except an unnoticeable to others amount on my stomach. As I lose now I am coming to terms with the likelihood I will require some skin removal, and should start savings now. I had hoped I could just be okay with it and wear it proudly, but I'm actually having skin irritation already just from around 25lb loss. Each weight loss journey a person has is different. This experience is so much different from my last one just a few years ago. And as everyone pointed out you can gain with either option which is often shown on weight loss documentaries. I was told by my program's psychologist to prepare for a 10-20lb weight gain after you hit your goal weight, and to set a limit you will not allow yourself to go over i.e. 200lbs, so if you reach that point you reevaluate yourself and get back on track, because weight will always be an issue for each of us, and everyone that loses through whatever means has to stay on top of it or it'll become uncontrollable. 7. If there is a weight gain in one of your appointments during your 6-month diet plan, will you be denied even if overall you lose weight? For example, say I start at 300 lbs, lose 10 lbs in the first two months, gain 5 lbs during the third month, but then I lose 20 lbs over for a final weight loss of 280 lbs, will I be denied? I have Anthem BCBS and I just wondered if they focus on the month to month or overall accomplishments. Gaining weight over the holidays seems to be a logical scenario, but I wondered about anyone else's experiences.

Ladies only - IUD or Implant?

Had Mirena for 1 year and it was the worst year of my life! Bled nonstop for 6 months followed by 2 week periods every other month, cystic acne, hair loss, anxiety, depression, and weight gain. Got it out in June and I feel like myself again! Sent from my SM-G920V using the BariatricPal App

    Dumping?

I was naughty and tested the waters and had a mouthful of a sweet desert and I felt so sick and sweaty. Never ever will I eat sweet items again, not worth the risk and the weight gain. You will know when your experiencing dumping. Just little amounts of new foods at a time. Good luck ???? Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App
  11. I definitely never ever let anyone make up my plate. That just wont work long term for you. The reason i say that, as time goes by you will be able to eat more food and because it is there, likely you will. In the beginning I measured everything until i got used to what a real portion for me looks like. Now i can eyeball what food i can eat and am pretty good about not overeating. Even when i order in a restaurant i have learned to ask for a to go box and remove most of the food off of my plate right away. I do this because, i dont want to over eat and for some reason my husband is on a seefood diet. if he sees more food he will eat it. LOL and my weight loss has become his weight gain! So we have gotten good at sharing or stashing the extras away. Just tell Mom you would like to fill your own plate and choose only items you can and should eat. Protein and veggies.... I promise, you will get the hang of this.

I am in the beginning stages as well and my husband obviously knows, my parents know, and one of my best friends that doesn't know anyone else in my circle knows. My husband is 100% supportive and he was the person I was most nervous discussing this with since health wise i have gone through some craziness over the last few years, but he is on board. My parents acted supportive at first until my mom had a moment and freaked out but mostly because she's worried as moms usually are. She did however say she thinks I will regret this decision, but she also isn't well informed either. Now my BFF was the surprising one, she is always super supportive and right there with me, however not this time. She has attempted to talk me out of it and since she is a Pilates trainer I got the sanctimonious work out talk from the person who has never been fat a day in her life or struggled with the weight gain from medical issues. I don't plan on telling anyone else unless directly asked since it's none of their business and since my surgery won't be until roughly end of February if I want to use the new resolution excuse I can. I'm sure I have others that will be supportive but I want to do this for me and not them so I don't feel necessary to include a bunch of people in the decision. Having so many cooks in the kitchen is never a good thing. Good luck in finding what's right for you, I hope you can have the support you need! Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App
  13. I've suffered from severe depression since I was 15 years old. I was "normal" weight until I hit 50 and a succession of events contributed to a lot of weight gain. I had RNY and it has not affected my medication at all. Did surgery "cure" my depression? Not at all!! But I am at least physically healthier and can get around better!! One less thing I have to worry about!! My diabetes is gone, my high blood pressure is normal and they fixed my hernia. Don't let anyone tell you what you should do!! Only my son and one sister knows I had the surgery for the very reason that I didn't want the judgement or listen to the negativity!! Good luck!! To thine own self be true!!
  14. I agree with wannabeH I I struggled for 20yrs with weight gain/loss..I'm 5'4 and bmi put me at morbid obese at 276 highest weight..I tried every thing the last 2 urs..gym, diet pills, cutting out foods..no success..I knew I needed something that would internally(physically) limit me from eating cus mentally I was not doing it on my own...I and 11days post op and I am more conscience of my choices/limits more than I EVER have been...Don't get me worng, I was programmed through life that I needed to eat, when I'm running errands, work, visiting so that mental part is a life adjustment.. But now you will think (like me) that preparing foods n snack choices is bes???????????? I don't deal with chronic depression so seeking your doctor advice and keeping him/her updated on your feeling throughout your phases n writing them down in a journal or to us will help☺...Others will ALWAYS have a negative spin on everyrhing ...Making sure this is right for you is the most important thing..Good luck and keep us posted???? 15. So I was advanced to purée food on Thursday. And I know how bad it is to step on the scale everyday, but I have been because i want to see results. Now I have heard of stalls within 2-3 weeks out post op but I haven't heard of weight gain. Within the first week I lost a good 12lbs but within the second week the weight has slowly been creeping back up. A total of 2lb within the 1 1/2 week. I have been going to the gym and lifting slight weights (doctor approved). I would be happy at a stall (staying the same weight) vs. gaining. I know people say you can't compare yourself to the next person but it would be nice to know that someone else went through this and passed through it too. I'm sure you guys must know how scary it can be to step on the scale and see the weight going up after all you just went through. It's scary to think this too might not work for you... Alcohol

Alcohol was one of the main causes of my weight gain so I've been avoiding it like the plague. It does a number on your social life, but it's worth it because I feel soooo much better! Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App
  17. I had a revision front band to gastric sleeve.......I never "ate around my band" and it was highly effective for 8 years until I began having reflux during the night and aspirating. Aspiration pneumonia can kill you!! I was unable to have enough fill in my band for it to be effective, so without my "tool"......my weight began creeping back up. I developed pre-diabetes at end began having joint problems due to the weight gain. So glad you surgeon recommended the sleeve. He said it was a restrictive procedure like the band, and since I did so well with the band that it should work for me. Band failure can be completely unrelated to the direct actions of an individual. Sent from my SM-G930V using the BariatricPal App
  18. I don't know how a person gets obese without overeating on a regular basis! But I have seen those posts too. I have no idea. As far as food addiction, I think I used and sometimes abused food but I'm not one of those that struggled to comply with the food stages/rules after surgery by any means. So I actually don't think I was ever a food addict. But if we are saying food addict is like other substance addiction, there must also be recovery right? Sent from my SM-N910T using the BariatricPal App I got obese not by overeating, but by having to take 60mg of prednisone a day, monthly decadron IV infusions and the inability to be active due to a debilitating illness. The end result of the steroids? No metabolism. Little to no adrenal function. There are those of us around here that didn't overeat. I'm no better than anyone else because mine wasn't a food addiction, I'm simply saying that there ARE other reasons for serious weight gain and inability to lose it. I personally know several people who had Lap Band and serious repercussions from it. Horrid stuff!! Two went on to have Sleeve, one did nothing after it was removed. The two sleeve revisions have been Ubër successful. Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App
  19. Revisions are only necessary if the surgery fails, which does happen with the lap band but how can removing most or all of your stomach "fail"??? Some people like to believe that if they gained back all their weight the surgery "didn't work" for them or it "failed" .Making bad choices caused the weight gain. Why they believe that ANOTHER surgery is the (magical) solution is beyond me. And expecting insurance to pay twice? Please. If the surgery they already had still works (it probably does) the patient needs to TAKE RESPONSIBILITY and do their part. The thing about this that is craziest is how often people post that there new surgeon is trying to get them approved. This seems to validate the belief that the previous surgery was somehow flawed. Sure the surgeons staff is trying to get as many pt as possible approved. That's how they make their $$$. I think a competent surgeon would have the integrity to say no.
  20. I have gone through 3 distinct periods of my life where I was a very heavy drinker. This past year, I began travelling to Houston for work where a dear old friend lives, and began binge drinking again (a 40oz bottle of rum in a night, each). During that time, it was becoming more and more common to put away a box of wine every weekend at home. I drive for a living, and have never been tempted to take chances with my employment, but was using all my downtime to get drunk. The weight gain from my poor eating habits while drinking plus the drinking itself is what drove me to have WLS in the first place. I'm not sure drinking will ever be a regular part of my life again. I'm going to Italy in the winter, when I will be 5 months post op. I don't plan to indulge in Pasta or bread, and I'm undecided if I will indulge in glass of wine here or there.

    Drinking and eating

I wouldn't eat and drink at the same because this will cause you to consume more food and then weight gain. Why have the surgery and waist time and money if you are not going to make life changes and do right. Sent from my SAMSUNG-SM-G891A using the BariatricPal App

    And then, this happened...

@@BigViffer Thank you. Funny enough, I don't see myself NOW as overweight. Because my weight GAIN was so fast (meds etc caused it) I was always startled by my heavy appearance then-- I always expected to see the trim, fit person I've once again become. Like many, it became "who" I was to others-- But your suggestion to smile and laugh it off---excellent. I appreciate your insight. Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App

    NY - NYC/Long Island

I hear you Lisa. Fortunately, my weight gain is due to happy stuff...Corey and I are having fun with food, and it's hard for me to get the genie back in the bottle. But I've been told by my doctor and others, that I need to drop a few lbs. and I know that I want to be at around 125 lbs. I'm creeping way too close to 140 and that's bad....really bad. So...I can tell you already that I'm still in Florida on 11/26 and in Philadelphia on 12/3. I might be able to do 12/17. I have plans for dinner with a friend in Flushing and I might be able to do both dinner and a meet up depending on what time you guys typically meet and of course where. If Corey isn't working that Saturday, I might even find myself on LI at his place. I suspect though that he'll be working and in the city by me....which means my taking the LIRR out there and then taking it back to Queens. Let me check with Corey...and let me know what time you think you would meet and we'll go from there. I don't even know if the date works with everyone else....
  24. I was told years ago that when we make fat cells we never lose them. They grow with weight gain, and shrink with loss, but still there. If we have enough from being very heavy, we need to get out fat % down to lowest for our best, but if we have a lot, will never be stealth like those that never got heavy. This is why liposuction is used to remove the cells.

    Stalls immediately after surgery

Stalls can happen any time. You should count yourself lucky you actually lost any weight instead of gaining the first week after surgery - many folks experience weight gain from the fluids and meds they use during surgery and may not see an actual loss until 2-3 weeks out. And there is the often discussed three week stall - which can happen at week 2 or week 4 or 5... Your body will not work exactly the same as someone else's body. But just know that you will start losing again unless you go nuts and start eating bad for you foods or not following your overall diet/exercise plan. Your job is to keep track of your food/liquid intake and make sure you're getting your Protein, Water and other nutrients and slowly adding in exercise over the next year. You need to throw out your old way of eating and the foods you used to eat and relearn healthy eating habits and foods and what is a good mix of Proteins, fats and carbs. If you do all of this, your body will do what it needs to do to lose that weight. So deep breath, keep doing all the right things, and trust your body to do it's thing.
