    Got it!!!

The bariatric surgery coordinator called me with blessed news.......I GOT APPROVED!!! On September 7,2011 my new life will begin. Im not getting the support from friends but I have to do what I have to do. At this point I have torn ligaments in my right knee, the pain is horrible. For each pound of excess weight it feels like an additional 10 pounds on my legs. Im the one out of breath and in pain so I made a decision to go through with this surgery. I only wish my friends and family would understand, but hey, this is my life!!! The surgery date is right around the corner and I am so ready to get through this. I appreciate this forum it has been such a positive tool during this journey.

What Shakes Do Yoy Like / Dislike

I am a very picky eater and had a horrible time finding a Protein shake I could get down. My very very favorite is Banana from CHIKE. http://www.chikenutrition.com/ has 28grams of protein. Chike chocolate and Orange Cream aren't bad either. I can also stomach the Chocolate from Bariatric Advantage and it has 27 grams a protein. I will have to try some of the shakes mentioned above. I wish you luck on your new journey!!!

    No more PMS symptoms

Hey ladies, I discovered a really wonderful and unexpected side effect of surgery. I used to get horrific PMS cramps. The entire week before my period was me using machines, pain killers, hot baths, heating pads-anything and everything to stop the pain. I saw dozens of doctors and they all didn't know what to do. Sometimes it would be so bad I would be feverish and couldn't even go to work. Post surgery this stopped. I now get very minor pain that a painkiller can stop. If I had known that bariatric surgery could stop this I would have done the surgery years ago. I'm just wondering if anyone else experienced this?
  4. Hey, I'm new to bariatric surgery. I decided on Duodenal Switch, but my insurance (Blue Cross PPO) is being unhelpful about giving me anything close to a straight answer on whether they cover duodenal switch. I cant find it on their website under bariatric surgery. I cant even get someone at their dedicated bariatric & transplant number to return a call. Now I'm wondering if it is even considered bariatric surgery, as this website has DS buried under "other". Can anyone give me any advice? I talk to my bariatric surgeons office (i went ahead and started the process anyway) about it and Blue Cross gives them a hard time too. So is DS considered bariatric surgery or is it regular surgery?
  5. At my next post up support group we are having a cook off. We have to make a bariatric soft high protein holiday dessert. Any ideas?
  6. @@LMSWNYC Sounds like you have a insecure husband and due to his low self esteem and low confidence, he does not like the new you. Whatever happens, do not stop living a healthy lifestyle. As someone above mentioned, divorce isn't uncommon after bariatric surgery. Once you begin to lose weight, you start to gain confidence and realize your self worth. I had the gastric sleeve performed in December 2015. 3 weeks after my surgery, my husband and I separated and he blamed he surgery when in fact, he was the issue. I had not lost that much weight, as I was only 3 weeks out from surgery. A month later, I filed for a divorce. We were married for 7 years too long. When I married my ex husband 7 years ago, I was already overweight. I had no self esteem, no confidence. He on the other hand was not overweight, educated and said he wanted to marry me. I grabbed him by the coat tails because I didn't think anyone else would want me since I was overweight. Every year that we were married, I continued to gain weight because I was extremely unhappy and depressed in our marriage. His actions kept me on edge and I was thrown in competitions with women and his porn addiction. After I had my surgery, I sat down with him and asked him to change his ways or lose me forever. He refused to stop watching porn and also rejected me in the process, yet he insisted he loved me. I left home thinking he would change but he got worse. He ended up finding a mistress and slept with her the day after our wedding anniversary, which was this past January. Our divorce was just finalized in July 2016. I am pretty sure he hates the new me and I am ok with that lol. I suggest that you and your husband consider marriage counseling and I hope he is receptive. If he doesn't wish to go through with counseling and believe that you love him and only him, your situation will just go from bad to worse. I really wish you the best and I apologize for my long post lol. Feel free to reach out to me anytime and please keep us all posted. Congrats on your weight loss and keep up the good work no matter what!

  8. Hi Kathy, I hope you make the decision that is best for you and your body. I also have the band and it needs to come out. My band is almost 10 years old so instead of having my band completely taken out, my dr. is going to replace it with a new band (depending on the shape my stomach is in once he's in there) but I'm keeping my new port and tubing and I'm either going to have a gastric plication or the sleeve. I haven't decided which way to go yet either. When I spoke with my band dr. he normally recommends the bypass but I'm unable to have that plus I wouldn't get it anyway if I could (I think). He doesn't recommend the sleeve and doesn't do many of them mainly because he thinks the leak rate is too high, even though he is a very skilled surgeon he doesn't like the sleeve. I went to a different bariatric dr. who is also very well-known in southern Cali and skilled and he also doesn't really recommend the sleeve. So now I'm really confused. I was leaning towards the sleeve but now that I know about the gastric plication, I am leaning more towards that. My main concern with the plication is that there is no long term data. The longest term data I could find was between 3-5 years out. I was very happy with my band until about 7 years out, so I'm not real comfortable with the limited amount of information as my own data would show good progress at 3-5 years out. Anyway - do lots of research, ask lots of questions and good luck to you. genepha

grazing, overeating and weight gain :(

Congratulations on your weight loss and also for reaching out for help. It takes a lot of maturity to do so. I agree with what others have posted above. Do you know what your Protein goal is? If so, are you getting in all of your protein and Water every day? Getting enough protein and water will help you feel more satisfied. Keep a water bottle with you at all times so you don't get dehydrated. I think Snacks are fine as long as they are protein-based and that you plan for them. I too have found MyFitnessPal invaluable for tracking my protein, etc. I have worked for years with college students and have taught Freshman seminars. One thing I suggest as a student and as someone who has had WLS, is that you make sure you use a calendar. Use it to plan out your days and weeks. Include everything that requires your time and attention like: Classes Deadlines Study Time Homework Assignments Exams Exam Review Projects Project Milestones Commuting Time Meal times Snack times Exercise times sleep (make sure you schedule enough time to get some sleep!) Social Time Parties Football Games and other School Activities Club Activities/Meetings Church or Spiritual Practice Appointments Errands Laundry/chores (You probably get the picture.) The point I am making is that you need to plan ahead, especially as it relates to your food, water, exercise, and sleep. Learn to practice HALT. Don't let yourself get too Hungry, Angry, Lonely, or Tired. All of these can lead to grazing and bad food choices. You probably won't have time to get Bored -- another thing that leads to grazing and bad food choices. You may also want to see if you can find a local support group and a nutritionist who works with WLS patients. See if there is a Bariatric Center of Excellence near you and ask for a referral. Your school may or may not have a nutritionist on staff which might be an option for you but I would make sure whatever NUT you choose that you find one who has experience with WLS. Also, as someone mentioned above, don't be afraid to talk to your campus food service folks to make sure they have things available that work with your program. Fortunately, most college food services are extremely focused on providing healthy choices. Best of luck with school and with your continued success.
  10. I have lost 27 pounds in 38 days. I would like to lose about 20 more before Christmas. The Bariatric Coordinator said he hoped I would be at 199 by easter which is 43 pounds from now. I think I should make it.
  11. What's your favorite brand of Bariatric Vitamins and supplements and why ?
  12. Bariatric Advantage Chocolate/ Raspberry Iron chewy bites! Tastes like a tootsie roll. And my multi vitamin isn't bad either, Centrum Silver Chewable Citrus Berry flavored!
  13. I don't take bariatric specific vitamins. I take Spectravite (CVS generic for Centrum) multivitamins daily, plus Nature's Way B12 and biotin.

Hi, I live west of Alexandria on Hwy 27. I started a Minnesota site but have no action so far. I'm a 7 year Lap Bander and I would not part with my great little tool. Let me know how you are doing. I'm actually looking for a Bariatric Doctor, mine is in Abbott NW, Minneapolis, and I want to transfer to someone who really takes time with you & has a pleasant personality. I have had Cancer & Breast Removal in 2012 and Minneapolis is pretty far to drive to just be hurried through when I have a Lap Band ckup appointment. Would you have a recommendation? I am an internet Lap Band Forum Fan. Folks here are so helpful.

    Is DS considered Bariatric Surgery?

Lovely WellPoint anthem - jackpot. Ok take a look at this site. The duodenal switch is bariatric for them. That said each employer who purchass the plan can decide what is or is not going to be covered. You need to check your personal group policy to confirm no bariatric exclusion http://obesitycoverage.com/anthem-bcbs-requirements-for-weight-loss-surgery/
  17. Hello! I was sleeved on 06/16/14... and know I need to start taking my vitamis....my doctor is recommending Bariatric Advantage, however I wanted to get recommendation on other options that are more economical. thank you
  18. Hello! So obviously, I'm new here. I just wanted to say hello, and add my 2 cents. I'm 5'8, and my current weight is 360lb. I can't say for sure that this is my highest weight, as I'm pretty sure I've lost some weight since January, but I never weighed my self, so I can't be sure. I guess it really doesn't matter though, 360lb is high enough, don'cha think! Lol. I've been fat (said not as derogatory, but as a factual statement), almost my whole life. I had the few years pre-puberty as skinny, but once 11 or 12 hit, that was over. I am lucky enough to have gained confidence in my self in my early 20's. Loving myself, body and all. So I never tried all the questionable fad diets and gimmicks that are out there. However, I was aware that a lower weight would be healthier in the long run. Obesity runs in my family, and my Nanie (my Mom's Mom) died from complications due to being obese. I knew I didn't want to end up in the same situation as I got older, so I did try calorie counting and exercise. While it was semi successful, I just wasn't able to lose much, nor keep it off. I knew I needed something more powerful, and lasting, for me to make weight loss work. So I've always been interested in bariatric surgery. Due to many circumstances, surgery through health care (Canadian here), was just not an option, and money for pay myself surgery, was just as unlikely. However, after a few family members went through they're own surgery, seeing how helpful surgery really was for weight loss in individuals who haven't been able to do it on their own, some of my family decided that they wanted me to have this chance, and put things in motion for me to be able to do this. Fast forward to now, a few months later, I have a surgery date of September 5, going to a surgeon in Mexico, the same one that one of my family members went to. She is confident enough in her experience to have set me up with them. In fact, she'll be traveling with me, to help me out. I'm excited for this journey, and a little nervous, I've never had surgery before, but I know this will be good for me. While I've been lucky enough to have remained relatively healthy, with only sleep apnea as an issue I have, I know that won't last as I get older if I don't do something now. So that's my story so far. I'm loving being able to read everyone's story on here, and hope to add more to this great community!
  19. Do you really want to ask other people's observations and experiences? If so, fine, but wouldn't you like to discover for yourself, like a surprise party? P.S. It's got much to do with new or renewed confidence and greater mobility, flexibility, friskiness and all.
  20. *waves to Bariatric Pal Folks* I'm in the final stretch of the pre op six month trial period! Just had my pre surgery appointments (breast exam, GI exam, Psyche etc.) scheduled this June and I'm very excited! I liked having the time before hand as I've gotten to know the weight loss staff very well from January of this year to now. I've been focusing on getting as fit as I can before surgery so the healing will be that much better. I've gone from a 49 inch waist in January 2016 to now a 43 inch waist! Gained lean mussel mass and trimmed up all over. One thing i look forward to is not feeling so tired after workouts. Lord you should see my sweaty mug after walking out yawing. :-/ I mean I feel better, but yea I won't miss the post workout ZZzz. I've been in the 200's for almost 12 years now and almost got to 199 but shot back up due to medications. Been preparing for surgery for ten months now and I'm very excited. Here is my workout regimen I currently am on: I typically will spend 12 minutes on the stair stepper and 15 speed walking at 3.5 mph or on an elliptical stair stepper for 30 minutes or 30 on the treadmill speed-walking. I try to mix up the cardio as much as I can, same for the weights. The machines I'm on are hammer strength MAS incline press 1 set of 15 with at 30 pounds and I rest for 120 seconds (yes I count) The the ISO Lateral Low Row 2 sets of 8 reps with 25 pounds on both ends again I rest for 120 seconds The ISO Lateral Front Military Press (I love this machine ) 2 sets of 8 with 25 pounds on both ends rest for 120 seconds Lateral Bench Press again 25 on each end and 2 sets of 8 reps sometimes 25 reps depending again 120 second rest between each set Squat Machine 8 reps at 80 pounds and sometimes another 4 reps. I take this machine slow and controlled to avoid injury and because my coordination is not that great. On the other days I use the leg press machine in place of the squat machine 3 sets of 8 reps rest of 60 seconds between each. I use the abductor machine (looks weird but works) 3 sets of 8 at 60 pounds. (I switch up the days for this machine too.) And every time I go to the gym I finish off the weights with the pull up/dip machine I am in lust with this thing! My goal is to be able to do a pull up one day without any counterweights! Then it's ab work for about 10 minutes to finish up with stretching for 15 minutes. I get to the gym about 3 to 4 times a week, but this is usually what I do while there.
  21. Hi there! I’m 38 years old in Central California. Married to my absolute best friend with the most awesome little dudes (ages 4 and 2). I’ve battled with my weight my entire life. No joke, my mom put me on my first diet in the 3rd grade, which likely set off the years of self hatred and body shaming. About 6 years ago I was diagnosed with a hiatal hernia (via endoscopy), and as of late it’s really gotten significantly worse. I just had another endoscopy on Tuesday and I am awaiting results. Anyhow, since my gastroenterologist suggested I might consider bariatric surgery, as that’s the only way they will repair the hiatal hernia at my current weight (304.6)...it’s all I can think about and am doing as much research as I can. I also signed up for an online seminar at the bariatric office at my local hospital. They do three surgeries at the hospital, lap band, sleeve, and gastric bypass. I’m leaning toward the sleeve, but honestly I just don’t know which is the best option (I don’t want to do lap band, just because I’ve read that it’s not as effective at losing weight). Anyhow, can you tell me a little about your experiences with sleeve or bypass. I only know two people that have had bariatric surgery, and they both have glowing reviews... But I know it’s not all sunshine and lollipops for everyone. Thanks in advance!
  22. I've been stalking bariatric surgery forums and YouTube channels for about a year and a half. I finally decided this was right for me and have started the process. I've gotten my referral, gone to the seminar, and have my appt with the surgeon on the 16th. After about 4 different calls to Tricare, speaking with my pcm, her calling the medical directer, and what my surgeon's office is saying I decided to start a medically supervised weight loss attempt (again). They can't seem to agree on if I need to have a medically supervised weight loss attempt, the length it needs to be or the time that has passed since I've tried. So I give. I'm just going to cover my bases. Anyhoo... Awesome info on this forum and you all are extremely supportive! I love that!

    PNW Kaiser

Hi Crigney21! I'm also going through the process with Kaiser in Portland. I am currently on step 4. Once my PCP approved me I received an email from the Bariatric department that said I was approved for the program. So far, through step 3, it seems as though unless there is an issue with my labs, the doctor doesn't feel I'm ready, etc. then I am going to have it. Let me know if you want to chat more! I know I was fishing so hard to find someone else who was going through it at Kaiser in Portland because each Kaiser is so different.

  25. @@jdc121975 Wow. That was such an incredible soul rendering write up of your life as it is now, and your life as you hope it to be. And like your daughter, I too hope "daddy" gets the chance to fit into and ride a roller coaster some day. Your post really struck a cord, and tapped into a deep place in my heart, and probably every other hopeful pre op's as well. If you aren't already in the field of writing, I hope you give it some serious consideration. There are thousands upon thousands of posts made here daily. But it's that rare diamond in the rough, the raw epiphany of an exposed emotion, that has the ability to stay with a reader long after the words have come to an end. Your post is definitely one of those. Thank you for allowing us the honor of sharing it. I probably can't alleviate your apprehension on drains, except to say that they serve a vital purpose. I had the choice of three different surgeons in my bariatric group. I purposely chose the only one who uses drains. I've never had a drain before either. In fact I've never even had surgery before. And like you, I'm not looking forward to the experience. But, I feel much better knowing that if there is a leak of some sort, it will be leaking on the outside of my body, not the inside. Seat belts are standard on cars because accidents happen, and utilizing them increases your chances of survival. Sure, there are plenty of people who go throughout their life unbuckled, and never even get into a fender bender. But is the chance of being that one lucky guy really a risk worth taking when it involves your life? It's worth a little extra inconvenience or pain in my book to have drains. An ouch of prevention is worth a pound of cure as they say. Good luck!
