i have done a lot of study and self-experimentation with ketogenic diets going back 8 years. i highly, HIGHLY suggest you not start any sort of keto dieting. just kick the liquid calories. also realize that a bit of rebound pounds is normal.

Do you HAVE to follow a low carb diet?
slimmingsteff replied to slimmingsteff's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Nope. I'm not really being guided by my surgeon or a NUT since I'm getting my surgery out of the country. But from the support groups I'm on, and the recipes page, everyone seems to be following a keto diet. (Low carb, high fat, high protein) So many recipes include cheese, butter, etc. Everything is ok in moderation, but eating "sandwiches" where your bread is replace by cheese constantly just leaves a bad taste in my mouth. I love healthy fats (avocado, nuts, etc) but too much fat like butter and cheese scare me :x -
Do you HAVE to follow a low carb diet?
PatientEleventyBillion replied to slimmingsteff's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I see. Okay. So.. The keto diet is about putting the body into a state of ketosis. It's effectively tricking the body, particularly the liver, into thinking you're starving, but it realizes you aren't, if you're doing this diet as it should be done. The liver first synthesizes carbs and stores it for fuels, but it quickly can be completely full of it rather quickly, so it then turns into converting those carbs to fatty acids.. those fatty acids get sent around the bloodstream generally to areas rife with fat (in men it's primarily the gut, in women it's a lot of places), but they also infiltrate the liver itself. When the liver is deprived of carbohydrates, it starts producing ketone bodies that tell areas that need energy (the brain, muscles, organs, etc. ) to start looking for other methods of energy consumption. The first method of consumption is protein. The second one is fatty acids. For the muscles, they quickly can run out of fatty acids, so need a steady stream of protein to prevent the ketone bodies from having the body burn up the muscle proteins instead as fuel (replacing them with fat). The organs like the brain, heart, etc. will easily adjust, using whatever protein it can (not much), and then changing over to burning up fat, which, in an obese person, is rife. So it makes sense from a standpoint of a perfectly healthy person to go with a normal diet you suggest, which is in line with what the government typically suggests with their food pyramid, but in an obese person due to the excess accumulation of fat, this processed needs to be reversed. Ketosis is, I find, the quickest way of accomplishing this, and when done correctly, and especially under doctor supervision, is quite healthy. And it's not to suggest eating foods rife with sucralose.. not a good idea. But the body needs protein anyways to avoid burning up the protein in muscles. A high fat diet I think is okay in the short term, because in a state of ketosis the body will burn through that quickly anyways, nothing will come from it. But yes, as a person becomes thinner and requires less energy input to satisfy what their body needs, you'll find that the high volume of ketone bodies and fat will wind up working against the person. So as they get smaller, they must adjust to what their body needs. I find a logical approach is by far what works best.. what you'll see often is people who are religious-like about diets and such.. which is counterproductive. -
Yesterday, Wed, Nov. 20 Maintenance : 5'2" / 1yr PO Sleeve / 115.6 lbs ... so I bought a bag of candied ginger a couple days ago because the Kid made a request for me to make a batch of ginger cookies. Well, turns out me and Mr. love candied ginger and have been snaking out of this bag enough that now I have to go buy some more. I'm going to have to bake these cookies as soon as I replenish our stash because we can't stop eating them!! ...went to bed early last night which was a good thing as 1) I was super tired and 2) I avoided the late night snacking hour. 8:00am - earl grey tea w/ stevia + coffee w/ stevia 2:00pm - salad greens w/ vinaigrette + 1 oz apple + 1/4 jalapeΓ±o pepper + 3 oz grilled steak 4:00 pm - 1 Love Good Keto Chocolatey Almond Bar + 1 oz candied ginger 7:00pm - salad greens w/ vinaigrette + 1 oz almonds + 1 fl oz pumpkin seeds + 5 oz grilled chicken Totals: 981 cals - 85g Protein - 50g NET carbs - 42g fat

Terrible as in how? Iβm also dabbling with Keto and whatβs scared me before is my liver disease and how that will relate to the high fats. But Iβm all for the low carbs and sorry to laugh at your pain but the 3 day no junk comment really made me chuckle πππ

Do you HAVE to follow a low carb diet?
slimmingsteff replied to slimmingsteff's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Wow, thank you all for your replies!! I definitely do plan on trying keto at first, but I DO NOT see it working for me for the rest of my life. I love my complex carbs. And keto usually doesn't discriminate. Watermelon, for example, has close to the allowed carb intake for the day. When I speak about carbs, I def mean complex! Thank you all for your replies - I will take every single one into account. I was really nervous posting this question. So thanks! -

That and there are ambiguous definitions of keto diet.. the only important part is getting the body into ketosis. I find the differences of how to be subjective and irrelevant. -
GALS who started their journey over 300 lb+<br /> +
TX4everLinds replied to Frustr8's topic in The Gals' Room
I am finally starting to see some losses again. Just wanted to encourage those who may be stalling or feeling like why did I even do this?! I started at 301 and lost 60lbs before surgery, averaging about 10lbs per month by eating Keto. I had surgery first week of September and lost 25lbs in September. I struggled a lot with reflux and was re-hospitalized for 2 days and struggled to keep even sips of water down. This was (mostly) remedied by Rx nexium. I still struggle some. Itβs a major learning curve! In October I only lost 2.6lbs...for the whole month! Dietician said I wasnβt eating enough and my metabolism was quitting on me. Itβs just taken me this long to figure out how and whT to eat. Still learning! Today on November 6 Iβve already lost 3.2lbs this month. So I think my body was in shock in October and I wasnβt consuming enough. Iβm excited about November and have to remember that with 25lbs in September Iβm still on track to average 10lbs/month like I did before surgery. I know this will change as I get smaller but I have to keep reminding myself I WILL GET SMALLER! Iβm at 215 today and looking forward to onederland! -

Greetings! This is probably a very silly question, but would it be appropriate to practice a Keto diet once past the 2 or 3 month post surgery? My nut and advice from the surgery center recommend limiting carbs, and of course, getting at least 60 grams of protein each day. If that is the case, wouldnβt the Keto diet be the natural path forward? Any thoughts, opinions, research, etc. are appreciated!

I won't have surgery until July 2nd, but this is my plan after I'm healed. I followed a lot of people who have had weight loss surgery and they follow keto. It seems to help. Just maybe don't go crazy on the high fats it could make you sick.

Yesterday, Sun, Nov. 17 Maintenance : 5'2" / 1yr PO Sleeve / 114.9 lbs ...went out for dinner (and a later coffee, drinks & dessert) with some friends of ours tonight/last night. I now have a new salad dressing I love and its a creamy one! I ordered a βKeto Cobb Saladβ and it came with βKeto Green Goddessβ dressing. It was #yum. With the exception of blue cheese, I normally don't like creamy salad dressings. But this one was great...I think because it was more sour-creamy and lighter tasting than what I think creamy dressings are like. I googled the recipe and will totally make a batch soon #doubleYum 9:00am - earl grey tea w/ stevia 1:30pm - salad greens w/ vinaigrette + 2.5 oz apple + .75 oz red onion + 1/2 an avocado + 3 oz grilled chicken 7:00-9:00pm - 2/3 of a Keto Cobb Salad (romaine + 3 cherry tomatoes + 1 slice bacon + 1 tbsp blue cheese crumble + cucumber + 1 egg + 1/2 an avocado + 3 oz grilled chicken + 2 tbsp Keto Green Goddess Dressing) + Charcuterie Stuff (3 oz brie + 3 slices salami + 1 slice prosciutto + 3 tbsp fig jam + 1 tbsp honey mustard + 3 gherkins + 1/2 glass red wine 10:00pm to 1:00am - 1.5 glasses red wine + 1 skinny mojito + 2 tequila + 1/4 slice apple crumble pie + 2 americanos w/ stevia Totals: 2137 cals - 66g Protein - 99g NET carbs - 104g fat

Yesterday, Thu, Nov. 14 Maintenance : 5'2" / 1yr PO Sleeve / 115.6 lbs ...seriously felt like I was eating all day long...then had a major dessert and snack binge in the evening while watching movies with the fam. The problem was that all the snacks were laid out on the ottomans in front of me and I just kept mindlessly picking at the spread for like 3 hours. Key word being: MINDLESSLY. 9:30am - coffee w/ stevia 12:00pm - salad greens w/ vinaigrette + 1/2 an avocado + 6 oz grilled chicken 3:00pm - .5 oz chicharron + 1.5 oz beef jerky + 1 Keto choco-coconut Fat Bomb + 3/4 of a KIND nut bar 6:00pm - Avocado Toast (1/4 avocado + salt + pepper + garlic powder + 1/2 slice Keto bread) + 1.5 oz mangoes + 1 KIND nut bar 8:30pm - salad greens w/ vinaigrette + carrots + 1.2 oz gala apple + 1 snack can of lemon pepper tuna + 1 tbsp mayo + 1/2 cup tofu pudding 9:00pm to 12:30pm - 5 peanut candies + 3oz apple + 1 oz cheese + 2.5 oz beef jerky + 1.5 oz dried mangoes Totals: 2566 cals - 165g Protein - 179g NET carbs - 116g fat

So update on my preop diet to lose 20 lbs by May 6th... I've already lost 30 lbs since I started dieting 20 days ago! I really didn't think it would be this easy. I've been staying at 1300 calories a day, drinking my whey isolate drinks and I've been taking these keto pills too. I've started taking a multi vitamin as well. I can't wait to see how much I lose by the time I meet my surgeon. Sent from my G60 using BariatricPal mobile app

127lbs before surgery date!!!!
gr8ful1 replied to Sparkle36703's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
If you're having a hard time doing it on your own, I would recommend enrolling in a medical weight loss program at a local hospital. This is different than just seeing a dietitian or nutritionist once a month. I'm talking about a much more comprehensive program that requires visits at least weekly. I have done this many times. The weight keeps coming back, and that's why I'm here seeking surgery now. But a very low calorie keto diet is relatively easy to sustain when they give you (well you pay for them, of course) the products to consume, track your progress and health along the way, and basically hold your hand all the way through the program. Bottom line: You can do this! -

Also: I've convinced hubby to try out Keto with me! Anyone want to join? I mean, we're pretty much all following some kind of LCHF/LCHP diet anyway π TBH I'm kind of scared about consuming more fat, but I'm MORE scared about how quickly carbs started to creep back into my diet... so I'm going to try to eliminate them entirely. Sounds like a 'carnivore' diet can be reasonably good for head problems/depression, and I have eczema/skin issues too, that might benefit from the extra fat (I'm having particular problems around my sugar glider wings and side boobs... thanks, loose skin!) -

I guess I shouldn't call it 'liquid', but 'pre-op' instead. Over here we follow the intense level of Optifast, which does allow for 2 cups of veg and any 3 optifast products (shakes, soups, bars, desserts). First two days were hard -- mainly due to headaches in the early evenings -- but I'm on day 3 now and I think I'm over the 'keto flu' stage, thank goodness! 2.2kgs (close to 5 pounds) gone in 2 days. Gotta be happy with that! =D Hope everyone's getting excited! I think my next prep step is to start timing water consumption, taking small sips instead of chugging like I usually do. So nervous I'll muck something up by downing a glass of water too quick after surgery... -

Eat real food hon. Let your tool do its job. Ditch the crap=Keto Ice Cream and Barney's Almond Butter with Lily's chips, enlightened bar...WAY too much processed junk. This is the time to break up with treats and nut up/knuckle down. Make your meals as lean and protein forward as you can. Don't start using "crutches" at this point. It is WAY early and chances are you will stall out long before reaching goal. This is the time to MAXIMIZE your weight loss. It's the time you will lose the most. Don't squander it. Follow your doc's plan. At this point I was at 1/4c per meal and 400-600 cals. ALL of it was protein + a bite or two of steamed veg + a tiny tiny amount of healthy fat (ie 1/2oz of avocado = 1/8 of an avocado). -

Made this Keto chicken pizza crust this AM (making regular pizza for the fam later and I wanna join in on the fun). It smells DELICIOUS: 350g shredded chicken breast, 1/2 cup grated Parmesan, 2 eggs & seasonings. Baked at 400 for 20 mins. 85 calories & .05g NET carbs per serving (1 serving == 1/8 of the entire thing), plus whatever toppings you add... Will post pics of the final product later...sooo excited! -

Peanut butter protein yogurt. I am not a fan of yogurt, but every so often I buy it. I found a vanilla keto yogurt. Itβs the consistency you of the Greek yogurts. I decided to try mixing it with peanut butter protein powder! Itβs sooo good and helps with protein intake. It tastes like a dessert! -

Ok, these are going crazy everywhere on the internet and especially at another site where I read. I know we used to make "protein waffles" in the old days of LC using protein powder, egg whites, and mozzarella cheese. But now they've stealth rebranded to Chaffles! (Those crafty millennial bloggers!) And now I can not help myself and have to make them. I even tried to buy one at Target online and pay to have it delivered today but they are so popular everyone is out of them! So now I have to wait til Friday for it to arrive! Wah!
