Bullet Proof Coffee
OutsideMatchInside replied to y0lis's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Sent from my iPad using the BariatricPal App I keep seeing people say coconut oil, but real Bulletproof coffee uses MCT Oil, not coconut oil. They are not the same thing. Bulletproof coffee requires MCT oil and unsalted grassfed butter, both are needed because both provide different things. I left a bunch of my Keto and low carb Facebook groups because I was sick of people spreading misinformation about Keto, bulletproof and just nutrition in general. @@woo woo Keep using your premier shake. -
Vegetarian saying no to keto diet
Arabesque replied to imaginegirl's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
Have a look at Dr Matthew Weiner’s Pound of Cure book & his you tube videos. He’s a bariatric surgeon who supports a low animal protein diet. It may not be anything all that new but may make you more comfortable about how to manage your weight loss post surgery. A good dietician should help you devise a way of eating that is best for you, your health requirements & your eating preferences. The biggest ficus post surgery is your prirein intake (& fluids) but I’ve never heard anyone say they were restricted to getting their protein only from animal sources. Plenty of plant based protein shakes & powders, yoghurts, milk, etc. as you know you can eat to meet the goals you’ll be given. Initially after the surgery you will be on a staged return to eating diet. This is support your healing tummy & not put undue stress on your digestive system. There are some foods we’re not advised to eat during this period. But again a good dietician should be able to advise you of alternatives. Mind you many have refried beans on their list of recommended foods during the staged return to eating stages. While I was on keto for my pre surgery diet, I was not encouraged to follow it long term by my dietician: good for kickstarting a diet but not long term she advised. I had my own doubts about it so I was glad. Many of us use the weight loss stage to devise a way of eating that best suits our needs & preferences & don’t follow any specific ‘diet’. I mean if there was a diet that worked for everyone none of us would have been obese & needed surgery. Personally I’m a low fat, low carb (2 serves of whole/multigrain carbs a day), low sugar & high protein (absorption issue). Many vegetarians successfully have surgery so your eating preferences should not be a deterrent to you either once you find a supportive surgeon & dietician. -
Mine has done this as well. He said I was doing so well on my Paleo/Whole 30 diet for the past 3 months, he didn't think I needed to do the week or two pre-op liquid diet. Just clear liquids the day before. I'm scheduled for a 5/23 date, and I have decided to do a more Keto diet for the week before the surgery just to be safe. I'm having the last of my planned "food funerals" this weekend. I had pasta with homemade pesto with 2 slices of really, really good sourdough bread last Friday night, 1 glass of Bailey's on ice last night, and this Friday I'm having homemade pimento cheese on Wonder bread with BBQ kettle chips. Weird choices, I know, but that's what I came up with when I thought about what I truly wanted to have that I may not be able to have again (or for a very long time).

Thats my reasoning for this too. So many medical issues. I go up and down in weight and i was down to 178 with Keto but I don't eat red meat and do not really care so much for other meats. So my weight went back up when I went off it and my dr said I did more harm than good and was just diagnosed diabetic. So that was it for me. It really isn't anyones business, you are so right.

I've considered Keto but I've always done better by counting carbs. Years ago I lost 40 pounds by watching my carbs but eventually gained it back then decide to have the sleeve. I do not regret it, my only regret is that I didn't do it years ago. My nutritionist told me that with my strong desire for sweets that I should have a piece of sugar free chocolate everyday. I just need to discipline myself and only eat sugar free and low carb. I have come too far to turn back now!

Sorry if I'm repeating myself, I've lost track of which threads I've posted on. My doctor said to keep it under 10g total carbohydrates per serving, and target 50-60g total max per day. Not low enough to go into Keto, unless that's your intent, but low enough for the body to prioritize burning fat first. I know on days that I've blown past this, I'll feel more irritable a few hours later and I'll crave more bread and sugar for 2-3 days afterwards, so go lightly on it! Personally, I've had trouble with some artificial sugars causing cravings and irritability. Not everyone will have this intolerance, but pay close attention to any sugar alcohols or substitutes in ingredients and see which ones affect you. I've had luck tolerating monk fruit and stevia, but Sorbitol and Xylitol hit me as hard as normal sugar.

MCT Oil, Keto..an alternate way to eat Post VGS

I definitely consider myself lucky! Just a bit of anxiety surrounding my rules being so different from the vast majority of what I see online about people's requirements and all. Was hoping to quell it a bit. I considered maybe imposing my own liquid pre-op diet for a couple days leading up to surgery to play it safe, but I know I'll be miserable if I do. When I've cut out sugar in the past to do do keto, the first few days are just migraine ridden. I also don't know that 2-3 days would actually be enough to shrink the liver at all.

MCT Oil, Keto..an alternate way to eat Post VGS
niseys4 replied to GeTnBackuP's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Hello! Thank you for talking about Keto diet! B4 my surgery i bought a keto diet cookbook but i only tried some of the smoothie recipes. I am now a 7 wk post op sleever. I still love to have my cup of decaf coffee with flavored non dairy creamer. I use International Delight. But in order to get my protein in first thing i added 1 scoop of Isopure zero carb protein powder in my coffee with a Tsp of coconut oil (ie: Rocket Fuel). Im unable to drink it everyday just on the days I dont go to the gym. Thats because the coffee is like a laxative for me! I like the keto diet idea but measuring Macos or calculating my fats & calories seems so confusing! I think the easiest thing for me to do is just to follow the recipes in the Keto for beginners cookbook & log what I can eat on my FitnessPal App & let it do the macos thing for me! By the way my 1 of my daughters started doing the Keto diet again @ 5 months post op & is doing great with her weight loss! She had the Gastric Sleeve also! I would like to continue following this topic to learn more about keto dieting after WLS! Thanks again for opening up this disscusion! Sent from my SM-T530NU using BariatricPal mobile app -
Lies to tell people about what surgery I am having
Sandra Nuelken replied to a topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I said I was doing a modified Keto diet, and I just wasn't hungry with it. I only had a few very funny happenings. Toward the end of the year, one of the students asked if I was dying as I kept getting smaller. Another thing that happened to me was my stomach was growling all of the time. During state testing when everyone was absolutely quietly working on their tests off would go my stomach for about 2 minutes. They were used to it so they tried to not laugh. When I told them I had to lose weight for health reasons they were very supportive, unusual for middle school students! Good luck!!! I'm now waiting for my insurance approval. -
Hey Lolo, I am jettisoning shakes (to a point)! While they are really important for getting your protein in right after surgery (when it hurts to eat anything), they are still processed foods. Most of them are made up of some combination of soy or whey protein, which is ok--but this processed protein triggers a significant insulin response. I am able to meet my protein goals with whole foods as part of my regular intake, so the shakes are no longer necessary for me. That said, I still have my shakes handy. If I am having a day where I might be missing the mark on protein--or right after a workout (if I don't have time to eat), I may have half a premier shake. However, to the extent I can avoid them, I will. I was doing this on instinct, but my surgeon actually recommended that I cut them out at my one month follow up yesterday--so, great minds must think alike. I told him what and how I have been eating and he's totally on board. Apparently, he's been eating Keto for a few years. P.S.--when I say I am jettisoning shakes, I mean the premier shakes and muscle milk stuff etc. If you're doing healthy shakes with kale, etc. in a blender, those are great. I am not having those personally at this point, but not for any particular reason. Maybe I'll go that route in the future. It's hard to do a true Keto diet after WLS. If you're doing Keto correctly, you're eating close to 1,500-2,000 calories a day with 60% or more of those calories coming from good fats (hopefully). With that many calories, you can still meat your protein goals. Also, people who are successful on Keto also mix in intermittent fasting, where they will skip breakfast and go 18-20 hours without eating and have maybe 4-6 hour window of opportunity to eat. That won't work for someone with a sleeve (at least within the first few years following surgery). We can't consume that many healthy calories, so we need to make sure we are hitting our protein goals first. We can then consume the rest of our calories in the form of healthy fats. On most day since surgery, my macro will look something like 45-55% protein, 45-55% fat and 10% or less carbs. One month post-op, I am eating between 750-1000 calories per day of protein and good fat foods. Good fats will get your calorie count up, but neither sleeve nor keto require real calorie counting. I just keep track of calories to make sure I am not going off the rails and to set a limit (I don't want too much of a good thing, if ya know what I mean). I have been doing a little intermittent fasting--but not as long as most Keto adherents. I am usually asleep by 9:30 and I am up somewhere between 4:30 and 5am to hit the gym. I don't eat before my work out (you burn 20% more fat doing cardio in a fasted state in the morning). I may skip breakfast altogether and wait until lunch to eat (or I might have a small high protein snack after my workout, if I am really hungry--which I am usually not). I consume most of my calories between 12pm and 7:30pm. I also make sure to him my water goals--which is important no matter what diet/lifestyle you follow. This is as close to Keto as I can safely get at this stage in my recovery. It's working for me. I feel great and blood sugar is great for the first time in years. I am still only 3 weeks into "Keto" or should I say "Bariatric Keto", but it's awesome so far. Since I have been in ketosis (which happens to a lot of WLS patients anyway shortly after surgery), I am losing weight at a very rapid pace (for me). I have loads of energy now. I do feel hunger, but I am satisfied quickly. I enjoy the foods I am eating a LOT. Moreover, the diet I have been following is doctor approved for me. I had my one month follow up yesterday with my surgeon and I went over my diet and workout regimen with him. He cleared me for all activity and had no issues with my diet choices at all. Cutting out processed foods and carbs and eating a high protein,, high fat (good fat) diet melds is like rocket fuel for your VSG in his opinion (with the modifications I described). I am not sure what you mean? In terms of age, I am 44. I am doing full 60 minute spin classes 5 days a week (with 2 in a row on Wednesdays (5am and 6am classes). I am probably overdoing it, but I feel really good after my classes. I have also just been cleared by doctor for all activity--no restrictions. So, I am going to start weight training again, starting tomorrow morning.

VSG to MGB Apr 11, 2018 with Dr Illan
Hello2018 replied to Hello2018's topic in Mini Gastric Bypass Surgery Forum
I am 31-wks post op, from VSG to MGB. Iam am down 60lbs. I do Keto and Paleo. I get food delivered to my home and prepare the meals. This helps alot to stay on track. I eat lots of salad! My dumping syndrome is maintained by limiting my sigar intake, I can tell when I start to OD on sugar. I can no longer eat flour tortillas, I cannot digest them as well as raw veggies. Broccoli is a horrible gas veggie for me and I cramp up. I cannot eat thick bread or pizza dough, even bagels are difficult. I do eat a bite then I’m done. Excercise, I run now 3-4 days a week. Ran a 5K. I excercise regularly, 1mi a day, stairmaster, rower, weights. I am still loosing but at a slower rate now. I also have extremely saggy skin. I cannot change it no matter how much I exercise. I notice that I have to reset my exercise or food diet to continually loose or I plateau out. -
Will WLS work if the problem isn't overeating?
NewMeBefore40 replied to WitchySar's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
It looks like there have been a lot of ppl who don't read. I eat 1000 calories or less and weigh 280. I was bulimic for years. I got the band and list then regained even though I was under 1000 caliries a day. I'm considering the surgery because the doctor says it changes your body's set point. My fear isn't that I won't lose, but that once again I'll regain because my body really wants to stick at this weight. I eat a whole foods diet, not a SAD. I do keto. I just don't lose. Screw the insurance companies! they approve drugs that cause suicidal thoughts, seizures and death. Medicine is experimental by nature, it is always possible for different people to have different reactions. Do we know why some people are successful and some not, do we know exactly how the nerves and chemicals are affected after a VSG is performed? We don't even have long term data on 20 year VSG success yet, we are literally the guinea pigs. Although keto seems to be the way to go, there isn't even a standard post op diet that is being recommended by bariatric surgeons. Don't get me started on diabetes, obesity, autisim, BPA, high fructose corn syrup, artificial sweeteners, vaccines etc... WE ARE THE GUINEA PIGS!! End rant

YES! Keto was wonderful for me. I lost 40lbs in the first 2 months and then stalled for a year and a half no matter what I did (at which point I learned I was broken). But I loved it anyway. I slept better, felt more energetic, never had low blood sugar/hangry emotions and almost never was hungry. Here are some fantastic resources: The big one: www.reddit.com/r/keto - Seriously, everything you could want is there. They're amazing and it is an active community full of people who get the science side and the flavor side. Recipes: Two huge sites I would always visit: http://alldayidreamaboutfood.com/ and http://cavemanketo.com/ Macro calculator for if you hit a stall: https://keto-calculator.ankerl.com/ I don't want to overwhelm you with links and info. If you're ever looking for a good bread substitute or something for a sweet tooth/salt craving, I probably found something to fit the bill.

Stage 1 Diet and Ice Cream
JessikaL replied to anna_queen's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Yes! Yes! Yasso bars are amazing. I'm 3 weeks postop and I got the fudge bars. They're the perfect size and have a good bit of protein. I also don't like halo top flavors, the salted caramel swirl is the only tolerable one I've encountered. However, I love nightfood and enlightened, both are lower calorie icecreams with good flavor selection. Enlightened even has a keto line! My two favorite flavors are enlightened cold brew and nightfood cherry eclipse but I haven't tried either postop Sent from my SM-G986U using BariatricPal mobile app -
I'm not sure the "meeting your deductible or Out of Pocket" expense is part of the actual approval process or its criteria. I started in May 2017 and had to go through the blood panels, exercise evaluation, colonoscopy, psych eval, several consults with a Nutritionist, and get a letter of recommendation from my PCP, two sleep studies for apnea and of course meeting with the surgeon several times. This actually took about six months. I did the sleep study early on because I knew I had severe apnea and needed to be on a BiPap machine for at least 30 days prior to being submitted for approval. On the 3rd and last pre op visit with the doc he told me to lose 10-15 pounds then sent me to his affiliated Nutritionist who set me up with a Keto diet. I failed that because although I was in ketosis many times, I still ate too many calories. I decided to go on the Bariatric Fusion website Liver Reduction Diet. It sucked but I ended up being OK with shakes and homemade chicken stock. I lost 13.5 pounds and at my next doc visit he submitted me to my insurance and I literally was approved within 72 hours. I am in California with Anthem Blue Cross. It's end of year and my OOP will happen to be less than $500. I know it's not what you want to hear but what I'm learning here is if you're self pay, almost anything goes. If you're insured (and their rules vary wildly) we have to be patient and abide by what they tell us to be approved. I've actually taken this time to "try" to reprogram my stubborn mindset into learning another way of thinking about food and my eating habits. This site is an amazing resource and I think the most important take away is that I need to realize my life will forever be changed the moment I come out of the recovery room and I truly need to be committed to a healthier lifestyle. I'm 53 and it's my time. Watch out [emoji8][emoji8][emoji8][emoji8]

May 15th, 2017 Sleevers Check in Here!!!
Newme17 replied to Newme17's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
@Apple1 Thank you hon. I honestly think the keto and carb restricted diet is going to get them in trouble down the road. In my opinion, they're fad diets all over again. keto is good for certain people with certain issues, like autism, epilepsy, etc. I have read studies on the keto in regards to this diet helping them from having seizures, etc. Pretty fascinating actually. It's good to lose weight in the beginning, but long term it's not sustainable. I just don't think it's a good lifestyle diet to be on. That's just my personal opinion. But if someone wants to do it, then that's their thing. I won't nail them down for doing so. I'm glad it's helping you out though. Knowledge is POWER!! lol -

Ok, these are going crazy everywhere on the internet and especially at another site where I read. I know we used to make "protein waffles" in the old days of LC using protein powder, egg whites, and mozzarella cheese. But now they've stealth rebranded to Chaffles! (Those crafty millennial bloggers!) And now I can not help myself and have to make them. I even tried to buy one at Target online and pay to have it delivered today but they are so popular everyone is out of them! So now I have to wait til Friday for it to arrive! Wah! Look at what I bought myself for my birthday pressie! https://www.target.com/p/dash-mini-maker-waffle-aqua/-/A-52912898?ref=tgt_adv_XS000000&AFID=google_pla_df&fndsrc=tgtao&CPNG=PLA_Appliances%2BShopping_Brand&adgroup=SC_Appliances&LID=700000001170770pgs&network=g&device=c&location=9027638&gclid=CjwKCAjwq4fsBRBnEiwANTahcOdi4XMR9dU9M_IJdWTEkfKPZ90Id6ZEUswHepUP8UQRChVJdG9SqhoCgO4QAvD_BwE&gclsrc=aw.ds (link isn't an affiliate link btw) It's a mini chaffle maker (4" diameter!): Here is a popular recipe for them: Chaffles by Kasey Trenum https://kaseytrenum.com/keto-chaffle-recipe/ -

Cheese Stuffed, Bacon Wrapped Meatloaf with homemade Keto ketchup (BFF made the ketchup for me and it tastes just like ketchup - actually better!) One slice (as shown) is 301 calories. I had a whole slice, with about 1 tsp of the keto ketchup (I have no idea what the caloric count of this is, so I'm just going to guess maybe 15 cals per tsp). This meatloaf was crazy filling and I probably ate too much as I am uncomfortably full. Was very yum though! -
