My surgery was very early in the morning, I was maybe my surgeon's second case that day. After arriving at the hospital, I was called back to sign all the paperwork and then waited for the nurse to come get me. The nurse got me set up in a room where I changed into the gown and the little booties you have to wear that prevent blood clots. They started my IV and the anesthesiologist came around to introduce himself (he had actually been my anesthesiologist during my hysterectomy and we had a good laugh about me and my surgeries) and ask some questions that I don't really remember. The surgeon came by and told me what was going to happen and told my husband about how long the surgery would last (I don't remember how long, but it wasn't very long to wait). Then they wheeled me into the operating room and after getting me situated on the operating table, the anesthesiologist told me to start counting down. I lasted maybe another two seconds and was out. When I came to, I was in a lot of pain so they gave me a little extra in the recovery room. Once I was feeling more comfortable they wheeled me into my room. The next few hours are a bit of a blur as I was in and out of sleep, but the nurses were in my room a lot. I had visitors at one point and I was able to sit up and talk to them although the nurse shooed them out after a bit. You'll be given pain meds on a schedule and they'll come in and take your blood pressure periodically and other nurse-y stuff. Sorry to be vague, I just mostly slept. When I wasn't sleeping, I was sipping water and walking around the ward. Very slow walking, but walking! It helped tremendously with the gas pain. During the night they'll continue checking on you about every two hours which is necessary but a little irritating for the sleep. I had some broth and jell-o at some point in the night. It tasted heavenly but I could only manage a few sips. The next morning they brought me a protein shake and I was told I could check out once I had finished it. It seemed to take forever but I got it down. I had no complications and I felt as great as could be expected with holes in me! I went home and went back to sleep. Sorry for the rambly nature of this, but I hope it helps!

Post OP care in us after surgery in Mexico
49Nash replied to Katieshmay's topic in Mexico & Self-Pay Weight Loss Surgery
I think this is such a potentially bad idea. I get when your insurance won’t pay and going to Mexico but to have major surgery knowing you don’t have insurance for follow up care is crazy. What if something goes wrong, even people with the best surgeons and medical care have complications. I 100% get wanting the surgery, but why not wait until you have health insurance so you know you can seek care without going bankrupt. Plus you are way more likely to seek care early because you know you will get billed. -
7 Days Post Op - Ate Cottage Cheese
Hop_Scotch replied to JanJan19's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
You can't say that with certainty, Some people are fairly under prepared and researched when it comes to their post op diets, they do not understand the risks of complications and how pushing forward with foods could risk their recovery and surgery. It's not hard to follow the guidelines, its only for a short period of time. Trusted the doctor to do the surgery? Then extend that trust to their post op guidelines. If someone desperately feels they can't another protein shake or soup after a week or two, see the doctor, see the nutritionist - ask for safe alternatives, seek permission to progress. I don't know about anyone else but pre my procedure...if ever I was dieting, I often found one cheat meal, became a cheat day, became a cheat week and before i knew it months had passed and I would find myself heavier than ever. It's a slippery slope, some people do not moderate well, essentially cheat or tweak once, becomes all that much easier tomorrow or the another day and cheating or tweaking becomes worse. -
MINI GASTRIC BYPASS AND ACID REFLUX
Healthy_life2 replied to NYCGAL000's topic in Mini Gastric Bypass Surgery Forum
https://www.obesitycoverage.com/mini-gastric-bypass-the-good-bad-and-ugly/ BENEFITS OF MINI GASTRIC BYPASS COMPARED TO GASTRIC BYPASS SURGERY Shorter operating time. Less re-routing of the intestines. One fewer anastomosis (connection of intestines), which in theory means less chance of a complication. Technically easier for the surgeon. Similar weight loss and recovery. ADDITIONAL RISKS WITH MINI-GASTRIC BYPASS COMPARED TO GASTRIC BYPASS Severe acid-reflux. Because the pouch is small and the remainder of the stomach is still connected to the intestines. It is possible for gastric juices to travel down the intestines and into the new pouch. RECOVERY, PAIN AND COMPLICATIONS Recovery, pain and complications are very similar to traditional gastric bypass surgery. -
Anyone else scared?
Aholifield002 replied to Sayj513's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
My surgery is on June 13th, I start my pre op diet tomorrow. So it’s like WHOA it’s getting real and my anxiety is kicking into full gear. I’m afraid of the complications. I’m afraid of not being able to enjoy food like I do now. But at the same time I am ready to make this lifestyle change. I want to be a healthier wife and mother. With all of that being said, I’m still nervous lol I will probably cry in the pre op room. -
Had surgery in June 2014 (age 45) June I will be five years out (age 50) I bounced back from surgery easily with no complications. Surgery is my second chance in life. I feel much younger and healthier than I did in my 30’s. I can keep up with the grand kids and have more adventures in life.

How often do you have Post-Op appointments?
notmyname replied to apiane's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Doctor at 2 weeks. Doctor and NUT at 1 month (it might have been 6 weeks?), 3 months, 6 months, 9 months, 1 year and once a year every year after that. I also had a couple very long visit-like telephone calls because I was having some complications. -
Is there anything you wish you knew before surgery?
mousecat88 replied to Zemi's topic in The Gals' Room
Complications can happen to anyone. Don't let a surgeon saying "oh, you're young and healthy you'll be fine!" convince you otherwise. I was 29 with no comorbidities and had 3 complications post-op (gallbladder, hernia, ulcer). Just be prepared for whatever comes. You will conquer it. I also wish they talked more about the hair loss. I've lost about 40-50% of my hair. Started at 3 weeks and hasn't stopped since. I *think* it is slowing down? I also exploded with badddd acne. Lasted about 5 months. Is clearing up well now. Also, don't try to use baby food as a substitute for pureeing adult food. BARF. Also I concur with the other poster about constipation. I didn't go for 17 days! Went to the ER and there was no impaction or blockage. Super bizarre. But I have to take Colace and Mag Citrate daily to have any BMs. I also have now developed an obsession with cottage cheese. Which is cool because it's great post-op and high in protein. But SO WEIRD that my fixation went from carby carbs to this random food choice. Whey never made me nauseous pre-op, but post-op whey isolate anything makes my stomach hurt so bad. Hunting good soy options in the beginning was tough, but they are out there. Now I eat some snacks with whey in them.. and just suffer quietly. lol. No one told me whey ISOLATES could hurt. -
How often do you have Post-Op appointments?
mousecat88 replied to apiane's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I had 1 month, 3 month, 6 month, and a 12 month in November. Then either annual or maybe an 18 month? Unsure. But I saw them a LOT in the first 3 months from complications. -
Congratulations on a successful surgery. I have no incite on lactose shakes but wanted to say that drinking will get easier. Yesterday was one month after sleeve and my surgery went well no complications. Glad to say that I've added spinning to my workout regimen as of yesterday. Right now my foods are limited as I am in the soft food stage and my meal consist mainly of yogurt, bean soups, egg and cheese, spinach and protein shakes. Water intake can be challenging at times but I do my best. Best of luck to a healthy you!

weird question
KCgirl061 replied to Mariella Josphef's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I’m surprised maintaining the lie to your best friend took a priority over the protecting your sleeve and preventing what could be a very serious complication. Return to your diet, watch out for future complications and consider opening up and being honest with your bestie. I get that you don’t want to make her uncomfortable with her own weight but how do you think she’s going to feel when you mysteriously lose all yours? -
Anyone else scared?
jasmineinmymind replied to Sayj513's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Obviously everyone is scared before surgery but you have it done and then you realize it's really not that big of a deal. I've had no complications, no vomit or foamies, no food stuck. No regrets. No hair loss. No gas. No dehydration. None of the scary things people talk about. -
Ive had no real complications either. I am 4 days post op and it feels like I’ve gotten nothing done. Did it take? I’m going to ask my surgeon for an X-ray so I can actually see things. I guess it might just mean we have great surgeons 😉

So I’m sitting here 13 days PO and I keep having these recurring thoughts of “what if my bypass just doesn’t work...?” Irrational, I know. I’m not talking about losing the weight and regaining. I mean straight up NOT losing anything ever. That doesn’t happen, right? I have no complications, no pain, I can drink and take my supplements with no issue. That scares me too. Like, I thought this was supposed to be hard. If I didn’t see the scars on my belly I would second guess that I ever had surgery. 😕

Bariatric surgery was a big mistake
Sam.is.sassy replied to Alvinchicago's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
Out of curiosity how long ago did you have surgery and how much have you lost as a result of the surgery. I have had multiple surgeries, I had lapband in 2012 and then revised to a sleeve due to complications. Fast forward to 2018 I developed GERD and a Hiatal hernia and in the next few months I am going to be revised to RYN. Even with all my complications I would not change my journey I have learned soo much about myself and it has truly changed my life. I have lost over 150 lbs and now get to live a full life!! -
I paid £10K to Healthier Weight and had my op done at the Spire Hospital in Solihull. Dr Singhal did my surgery. He was excellent and I had no complications. The price includes follow-up and support by a bariatric nurse. I can't tell you about the Hospital Group though.

Worried I'm going about this all wrong - help?
FluffySaysForkIt! replied to KatieMc's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I live a ways away from my surgeon, though not Mexico far by any means! As far as post-op surgical support -one thing I have done is figure out, God forbid, where I would go hospital wise if there is a true emergency issue that would keep me from making the long trip back to my surgeon's hospital. I picked a hospital that is close to me and also has a true bariatric program. While any hospital can deal with emergencies, I figure it is better to go where they would have someone familiar with the surgery and complications. Not likely to need it, but a good back up for a worst case scenario and a best plan B if I do. Just something to consider as a pre-game plan for you. Congratulations and good luck! -
I’m 44 had the sleeve 10 mos ago with no complications. I didn’t have any previous stomach or abdominal surgery. Like others said..ck w your dr on the foreseeable complications for you as everyone is different. For me it was smooth recovery and I’m very happy. I’m 5 1/2 pounds from my goal!! Starting weight 231 and currently I’m 140.8. Goal is 135. Good luck to you on whatever you decide is best for you on your WL journey.

Intermittent Fasting Daily Menu/Results/Accountability
FluffyChix replied to FluffyChix's topic in Post-op Diets and Questions
Well, I think she will explain this weekend. But this one is pretty simple. No animal protein. A super greens green smoothie 2x a day and unlimited green veggies. So it doesn't sound complicated. I am getting the kind of super greens from the grocery store. I can find the amazing greens super green mix. 2g protein per drink. It's supposed to be low protein <20g per day from plant based sources. And you are supposed to limit BCAAs (which you get a lot of from protein isolate - whey). So this is a good source. And you also get protein from the things like broccoli, spinach, kale, etc. The idea is that by limiting protein, then you force your body to consume the extra and broken proteins in your body. So that once the fast is over and you're eating the healthy building blocks of protein again, you build new, healthy protein. Supposedly that helps you with all kinds of things, including excess skin and then building new muscle!!! By doing this, so far, my weight has remained stable. Today I'm at 138.2lbs but my body fat percent continues to drop. This morning it was at 25.6% (down from 30% at the same weight). So something is definitely changing? -
Doubts about sleeve option
Healthy_life2 replied to Karen58's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
I’m five years out with the sleeve. I’m maintaining in the 130’s. I bounced back from surgery and had no complications. For me it was a great choice. This site is mainly people researching, are new and in weight loss phase, had weight gain or complications. Understand that many people that are maintaining no longer need support on this site. Read this link to see the positive stories to give you a balanced look at outcomes. https://www.bariatricpal.com/topic/423992-what-you-had-no-surgery-complications/?tab=comments#comment-4758950 For newbies We are not ALL doomed to regain. There is no way for me to avoid offending the people on this site that have had regain. What I am saying is not judging them. Have compassion. There are reasons why people regain (medical issues, complications, eating disorders, pregnancy and not following plan. - Anyone who has stretched their surgery needs it diagnosed and therapy to control overeating. I would hate to see anyone stretch a second surgery. If they need a restart, I hope the second one works for them. Bottom line, the only reason any of us gain weight is eating over calories and macros. -
I'm 54 and had the sleeve 5.5 months ago with no complications and no problems. Good luck on your WLS journey.
-
many people have no complications at all and of those who do, most are minor. You hear "bad stories" because people who have major complications are reaching out for help. People who don't have any complications and for whom things are going great aren't likely to broadcast that fact on the internet. Thus, it seems like major complications are more common than they really are. I know what you're feeling because before I had surgery, I stumbled across some sites that had horror stories, but those kind of stories are really rare...

I’m in! What do you eat on the FMD? How complicated would you say it is? -
I’m sure you have heard this before but if you have very low complications rate with the gastric sleeve. Depending on your other health issues and history, your surgeon will be able to tell you what the risk will be in your case. You probably know the risks you are facing if you are not having the surgery. Also he can tell you the benefits you can expect. Take your time to think at those facts, commit to it when you are 100% sure you are ready. It is life altering surgery and can give you amazing success and satisfactions but also it is irreversible and not for everyone. This surgery is a great tool to get your health and your quality of life where it needs to be but it needs commitment to make it work. It is normal to be anxious about it, nobody can guarantee zero complications but as long as you’re prepared to do your required part your chances of success are pretty good. This website will be a great resource for advice and encouragement for you. I wish you best of luck.
