How do you stop eating before becoming over full if you weren't hungry to begin with?
Carlotta1 replied to ugtalvt's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I agree with 1DAY..eating 1 meal a day is not a good idea in my opinion. Once u start eating reg food at 6 weeks out..you need to listen to your body. I can tell I have enough without eating too much. This is what the nut advised I should do: eat 1/2 cup of food, protein first, veggies second, then if room for carb., eat these as well. I can tell u that when I eat my protein first I get full really fast.. How I can tell..my stomach starts to gurgle a lot , sometimes I get hiccups, and tasking another bite is not appeasing for me. U have to learn to listen to your body. Before I had surgery..I lost the feeling of fullness no matter what I ate, now it is different..which is great. -

About how much food volume
Beachy_Babs replied to Midnight Phil's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Oh, I know how you feel ! When I am out and about without a packed snack, I go into panic mode. But its good that you chose to have a salad instead of nuggets! That's an awesome start. One problem I have is eating too fast. Sigh, still learning myself ! Good luck :0) -
Hi, I'm 10 days post-op and I've been reading lots of forums like this one through the past week and a half. I've seen folks who are on full liquids like myself saying how long it takes them to finish something (say a 16 oz Protein Drink - one woman said this took half the day). Now, my pace has definitely changed and is still changing post-op (heartburn, fullness, and learning that if I feel uncomfortable in the slightest I should just stop eating), but my ability to finish certain things varies in time. A bowl of lentil Soup took 7 hours to comfortably finish, a thin tomato soup took 3-4, a Protein drink about 45 minutes, and two cups of miso takes about an hour give or take. Water, broth, and sugar-free Jello was straight up easy. Is this a person to person thing? What was this like for you? Am I going too fast? Will this affect the size of my sleeve?

In a time crunch
ShrinkingPeach replied to crazysexycool93's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Once all the info is turned in to insurance it typically goes pretty fast. Make sure and double check that everything is done and make sure your surgeon's office gets it all turned in ASAP and then become the squeaky wheel to the pre-cert department of your insurance company. Good luck! -
I have been fairly honest with everyone just because I feel everyone struggles. For some when they say you look so good I thank them. If they really pry I just say I had a procedure. You could say diet, exercise, cutting calories to xxx. I completely understand about not wanting to lie- I do struggle with this a bit because I don't feel everyone needs to be up in my business. I was completely honest at work with everyone and most of my family knows,. I live in a small town and I figure people will probably find out or suspect when I lose a lot of weight fast.

I had my surgery September 26th and on the 4th week post surgery I started going to the gym and would walk fast on the treadmill for 45 minutes. I wouldn't feel exhausted or overworked so I just kept doing that being that my doctor didn't want me doing anything else other than walking. Tomorrow I will be 6 weeks post surgery and I really want a five day workout routine that involves the perfect amount of cardio and weightlifting, but I don't know what to do. Someone please help me. Thanks in advance.

Low BMIers - how fast did you lose weight?
soph504 replied to soph504's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
That’s amazing! All of you have lost a lot. I guess the important part is that the number on the scale keeps going down, not how fast it takes. Fingers crossed!! -
I have been using this site for a lot of my research throughout my decision process, and now that I am moving towards my surgery date. This has been my journey so far: Around Thanksgiving of 2016, i had made my final decision to pursue bariatric surgery. I had the support of my family and friends, and I was ready to go. I had a recommendation for a surgeon, and so I made my consult appointment. I had my first consult on December 6, 2016, and I brought every piece of medical information with me to that appointment that could possibly prove that I had met the insurance qualifications for approval. I left that appointment fairly certain that I would have my surgery some time in January 2017. On December 14, 2016, I had an appointment with my PCP for medical clearance, and I also had my psych evaluation that same day. They were both kind enough to provide me copies of my records right after the appointment so that I could give them immediately to my surgeon's nurse. Once they received all of those documents, along with the proof of following a 6 month medically supervised weight loss program, they scheduled my surgery date for January 17, 2017. YAY!! I had my Endoscopy done on December 20, 2016, and was cleared or surgery. At this point, I am scheduled on January 4, 2017 for a pre-op class that will explain pre and post op eating plans, and any other surgery prep items. I then have my last appointment with my surgeon on January 5, 2017 before my surgery. This whole process has moved so fast, which I am so excited about. At each step of the process I have been worrying that one piece or another would disqualify me from the insurance approving the coverage. My surgeon's office has assured me that I meet all of the qualifications, and there is no reason the insurance should deny me. At this point, I am just counting down the days to January 17, 2017. I am so excited that I have already started cleaning out my closet! Thanks to everyone on this site for sharing your journeys, and allowing all of us newbies to learn from you! I look forward to becoming an active member of this group.

2 days... trying to stay positive...advice wanted
LindafromFlorida replied to Tamosy's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
The weight does not fall off fast, no matter what you think. It has been coming off very slowly for 5 months here. The scale stays the same most of the time but my clothes fit different. My cure was weighing about every 2 weeks and not worrying if the scale does not move. Voila! 50 pounds down! Relax is my advice. Best of luck! -
Today I measured myself for the first time since surgery. It has been 4 weeks and I have lost 30 pounds, but the measurements shocked me!!! I had lost 4 inches in my waist, 3 inches from my chest, an inch from each ankle, 2 inches from each thigh, and 2 inches from each knee. I was worried I wasn't losing fast enough but then I see 17 inches gone from my body and I know that I am going the right way. Today I went to the gym and kind of over did it, but feel the urge to push myself. I know I am still healing and was reminded of this today, especially when I was trying to do triceps exercises laying down on a bench and felt the incision and stomach muscle pull. Ouchh!!! Just gotta go slow. I am so excited to feel great again and have energy. I am happy to hear so many people that I can relate to on this site. I wish everyone the best on their surgeries. This surgery is definitely worth it!!!

Today is 1 month and 1 day since I had my VGS surgery. And I can’t tell you all how happy I am to have had this surgery. It has made all the difference in the world to my life. I have 10x the amount of energy I used to have, almost like I have a bounce in my step again. My SW: 260 My CW: 217 GW: 175-180 It just seems like it’s really working. What I wanted to share with some people that seem to be struggling with the weight loss is that I have made my diet mostly keto. I understand carbs are just as important during the recovery time, but being more keto has helped the weight come off faster. Faster than even when I was not eating much after the surgery. I am really surprised by how fast it is dropping now... I think I’ll be at my goal weight before I even know it. Because of all this new found energy, I have been able to do so much more. I want everyone to be this happy 😃

Ok, so I’m almost 3 weeks out and my relationship with food is just bizarre. I don’t crave it, I don’t really care, and so far I haven’t felt physical hunger - not even once. That being said, just this week I: Cooked curry and traditional Polish potato& meat pie for my parents, then made a chocolate cake for my colleagues at work followed by a lemon meringue tart for the friend I live with Watched 5 episodes of Masterchef Australia and a documentary about fast food (how does that even concern me? Obviously I won’t have a pureed take away!). This is ridiculous. I haven’t tried any of it and didn’t want to, and I can’t really figure out why it is that I’m doing it. Mostly I feel like since I KNOW I can’t have it and WON’T have it no matter what, I can actually enjoy food without eating and the sense of guilt that I usually felt afterwards. It’s like I know it can’t harm me, so I’m safe. But then I just think I’m like a crack addict and I use this as a substitute for a good old pigout session. Anyone who can relate to this twisted behaviour?

It has been a whilke since I have blogged, Things are still good. I am down about 90 pounds, but am having to fight for the last 50 to go away. Anyway, can anyone who has been banded for awhile let me know if you had problems with food going down about 3 months after hitting the green zone? I hit the green zone in Jan 2012, and just lately I have been having problems with food getting stuck, or slowly passing through the port, which is very uncomfortable. Not sure if I should have a tiny bit of fluid taken out or just cut back again. I can only eat 1/2 cup of food, meat is very difficult at times. But, when I think about things, I wonder if I am just going too fast and perhaps eating too big of bites. I know there is no excuse...I just forget sometimes what the rules are...like dime size bites and chew, chew, chew and then chew some more. (I hate when my life gets hectic as it is right now... graduations, vacations, planning a wedding, and work is extremely stressful...we have 3 audits coming up in the next 5 months, ugh). Anyway, any advice yiou can provide will be apprecaited. Happy banding to all!!!

Tricare - Center of Excellence???
wifeof46pilot replied to irideaqh's topic in Insurance & Financing
I went to the doctor on January 30, 2008. My doctor put the request in for the lap band and I received word from my doctor that I was approved on Feb.11 they said that they had just turned in the request on the 7th so the approval came fast. My surgery is shceduled for Feb. 21. Tricare works fast. -
I have severe acid reflux, so the Dr. did a scope prior to surgery and sure enough I have a Hiatal Hernia, As Avafern said, it is caused by obesity and other abdomen issues..including the food you eat and how fast you eat..all kinds of stuff. He will be removing that during surgery on the 24th and said is should subside in a month or so.

Lump in throat, possibly bubble air stuck?
Joyblick replied to SinfullyRavaged's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Hi, banded 11/30/2016. I don't know if this is the same thing, but a few months ago I had a similar problem after eating shrimp. I didn't chew well enough and was probably eating too fast (one of my main issues!). A restless night followed by the next day a feeling of an uncomfortable "lump" in my throat even when drinking sips of water. I got in to see my surgeon that day, he sent me for an upper gi. No blockage was seen by that time. He had me do liquid protein and soft foods for 2 days just to calm things down. I have been fine since then. He truly believes that it was a bit of shrimp temporarily stuck. I don't know what you ate before this happened. He told me shrimp is a problem for a lot of patients, but I can eat it if I chew thoroughly like we are supposed to. I hope this helped, best wishes for your journey! -

good luck! My first appt was oct 25th, everything seemed to move pretty fast, I meet with all the necessary drs and had a sleep apnea test and learned I have severe sleep apnea.. thats why I was approved if not my insurance wanted to see that I was morbidly obese for 3 years! -
There's plenty of potential issues that could happen with anything and there's always a risk any time you have a medical procedure. However, the bottom line is you have to do what's right for you. I can tell you that the majority of issues that occur come from the patient being non-compliant with post surgery instructions. Band slippage usually occurs when someone isn't eating properly or they're throwing up too much, etc... (again all signs that they're not eating properly.) These are things people won't admit to, they'll blame the surgeon, the band, etc... and while there are SOME cases of of malpractice or faulty equipment the majority of it goes back to non-compliance. Flips that's questionable, if again the patient is non-compliant with lifting restrictions, etc.. it's possible they tear or loosen their stitching during the healing time and don't see the result of it until after. Remember that 90% of the people who have the surgery have issues and problems with food and accepting responsibility for their own actions so they'll be quick to blame the band, doctors, anyone but themselves. I am 1 year and just shy of 3 months out and not a SINGLE complication. Not one. If I throw up, I KNOW it's because I ate too fast, didn't chew enough, etc... Sometimes I get stuck because I'm not open, again I know this happens at times and comes with the territory, however they tell us to sip something warm if we haven't eaten yet to open us up. So that's my issue. I researched this for 5 yrs before I did it, feeling surgery would be my absolute last resort. When I became truly informed I realized it was a tool and not a way to do it for me, unlike bypass. All that being said ultimately it's your decision. I've done it both ways, with or without the band, the difference with the band is while I haven't had a HUGE weightloss like some, I haven't gained, which is my main concern. I feel like this is one of the best things I've ever done for myself.

Ohhh - me too! I'm on day 6 of 14 of Optifast shakes. I really like them, in fact actually look forward to my next shake. Guess I'm crazy. But I always loved choc milk, slim fast, instant breakfast drinks anyway. I don't use much water - love them thick, only about 5 ozs. I drink one about 7:30, then 11, then 3, then 6:30, then right before bed to fill my tummy. I feel like a newborn baby on formula! My mother made me some homemade chicken broth (YUK) and beef broth (YUMMM). I think I must be addicted to beef, so the beef broth actually helps with those cravings. But homemade is best - she boiled stew meat, carrots, onions & canned tomatoes and seasoned it then strained for me. She & my husband ate the stew and left me the broth. BTW: My husband came home the other night and started to saute' onions in a pan for something and I jumped all over him for the food smells in the house. Now he just has a sandwich for dinner and there's peace once more! We can and will do this.

I ALWAYS get them if I have eaten too fast. I used to think it was a sign that I was full, but when they started happening after the first or second bite I knew it was becasue I had eaten too fast.

Ok so I am tyring with one hand pls forgive mistakes I had hand surgery two days ago. I was banded Aug 10 2010. Between that day and today I have had mutliple fills and unfills. Mostly steming from a tight/finicky band. I dont think I have ever vomitted so much in my entire life as I have in the past two years. Painful hiccups, unable to eat with a bra on sometimes. Varring band tightness throughout the day. I current have 4 cc in my band but I have been as high as 6 cc. Originally lost 50lbs but in the last few months have gained half back. My surgeon is pretty much degrading when I go in and have a weight gain. Very non-supportive. During my last visit I broke down and was horrified that I cant work with this stupid band. He suggested we give it a few more weeks... no more then 3 meals a day (DUH) low calorie liquids ( DUH).. tell this to someone who vomits most of the day. Bythe time I get home I feel so weak and horrible I eat bad foods. Anywhoo he said we may need to look at either taking the band out or do a bypass or sleeve. He states he has MANY patientas who just can not work with the band or it doesnt work with them. I need to do something becaue this vomiting and weight fluckuating is very depressing. I am very scared about the bypass although I know many ppl including my mother who has had it done with sucess. Barium swallows show good placement but bad acid reflux despite being on nexium forever. I have not had a upper GI for a year now. I see my GI doc today. Also the thing that scares me when I go to eat a solid food say meat or even a veggie. I can feel it hit my band and my heart starts to beat so hard and fast. I have acutally almost passed out a few times. I get this 75% of the time I eat. Now this can't be good on my heart... Ive told my surgery on more then one occasions but he has brushed it off failing to note in in my medical records. I need some opinions... support.... guidence...someone who understands....

Trying to learn about LapBands & Decide
Blund replied to Rennie's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
Thank you Randi, reading that book sounds like a great idea. I haven't had my first surgeon's visit yet...it in a week and a half and I'm very excited. I'm going to look on Amazon, and if I get approved for the surgery, I'll order it. My friend had the Roue-n-Y (sp?) surgery several years ago, and she said she actually "mourned" food. She had a big dinner party with all of her friends for her "last supper" before surgery. She has lost a TON of weight. I'm more for the less invasive Lap Band though. All that cutting and re-arranging inside freaks me out! My BMI is 36, and I don't have many co-morbidities, so I'm worried I won't be approved. I've read posts both ways...some easy fast approvals, and others denied. -
Emotional Hunger

i chew ice. or i put ice in the blender with a splash of milk and some fresh fruit. it's fast and there's not really an extra calorie intake.
