    I'm lucky with the caffeine. Just a unsweet iced tea a couple times a week. Stopped those this week. Glad that's not permanent! It's nice to have something to drink besides water since I don't like coffee of any kind. Nutritionist recommended UNJURY Chicken Soup Whey Protein powder to make broth. Apparently the taste is amazing and the extra protein makes it more filling. You can only order it on the UNJURY website. I like Premiere Protien Shakes, Optimum Whey Protien powders and ProtienO2 water. Concerned I won't be able to all the Protien I need all the time, so I also bought some unflavored Optimum Whey Protien powder to add to food. Nutritionist recommended whey Protien when using powders. You can get the Optimum and ProtienO2 from Amazon. I used Subscribe and Save to get up to 15% off. I also bought a highly-rated bariatric cookbook by Sarah Kent ($10 on Amazon). It helped me feel more optimistic about food post-recovery. I'm going to try some of the recipes before surgery to know what I like now and not when I'm hangry. One question for everyone...you going to use a post-surgery abdominal binder?     If you are post surgery it could be your hormones going wacky on you. Mine did a bit and I just didn’t want to do anything for a couple of weeks but then it leveled out. How long Have you been seeing this therapist? Do you like them? Sometimes it is good to be reminded that we have good stuff going on in our lives too but I hope that is not really all your therapist is offering you in terms of help. Are you upset about something specific or just feeling down? If you are having a hard time with the loss of food like lizonaplane mentioned, the bariatric therapist may be better equipped to help you through that. If you do not feel that your therapist is helping you then try someone else. I went through several until I found the right fit.
  5. Yes, this is what our surgery center told us. In addition to nutrient deficiency (are you taking your bariatric vitamins every single day?, are you getting enough protein, etc) it could be a hormone/thyroid issue.

    I am down to a large from a 3X. If I catch a glance at myself in a mirror, I'm happy with how I look, but when I go to put on size large clothes, I'm sure they won't fit. It's very common, but I agree that working with a therapist can be helpful. Also, I read in a book on bariatric surgery that you can look at those around you and try to guess their size, then you'll be surprised when you realize that you're actually smaller than them. I also would recommend getting clothes that fit. I don't see how much weight I've lost when I put on bigger clothes. When I see my body in clothes that fit, it's more obvious.

    I agree with the above advice. Also, consider that you might be grieving for the loss of food as a comfort mechanism. Can you make an appointment with the bariatric therapist who approved your surgery? They can help untangle this. And if you do decide to take an antidepressant (which is probably a good idea), make sure you talk to your doctor about taking one that's not likely to cause weight gain. There are a lot that can cause weight gain in some people, but there are many that do not. Keep us posted!
  8. I'd check with my PCP or surgeon. Hair loss that far out from surgery usually isn't telogen effluvium, the loss that is common after bariatric surgery (and can be a side effect of any major surgery, actually). It may be related to a nutrient deficiency or something. At any rate, I'd certainly mention it to my doctor.

    In general, due to bariatric surgery, alcohol tolerance does not change in any way. Those biochemical processes that occur in the body and are associated with the disposal of alcohol remain the same. All the biochemistry associated with the assimilation of alcoholic beverages remains the same as before the operation. But some things are still changing. After any bariatric surgery, alcohol usually enters the small intestine faster and, therefore, is absorbed faster. After the operation, I started getting drunk with a smaller dose and somewhat faster than usual. After that, I had a lot of questions regarding alcohol consumption.     I used Ramsey Healthcare at the Woodlands in Kettering. My surgeon was Mr Sutton and bariatric nurse was Emma. They were and are an amazing team. Yes I paid a premium, but I have so much after care and lifetime support. I interviewed 3 different surgeons across the country before I made my decision and I am glad I chose him. Within 6 weeks of first consultation I was in and having my surgery. i had my surgery in 13th July, I weighed 15 stone. I now weight 9 stone 10. I have had no complications at all! I used a bank loan to fund this as the interest rate was more favourable. It did cost me £10k but it’s the best money I have ever spent! i also have an on hand dietician and an app which has lifetime support and contact with a range of professionals good luck in your journey!! 😊
  11. Let me preface this by saying I'm one of those crazy Scandinavians. We get put outside to sleep when we're babies, for hours, also in sub-zero temperatures. I love the cold, love sleeping in a bedroom so cold I can see my own breath. You just sleep so well. This didn't change while getting fat, obviously. Then, bariatric surgery happened. 1) Immediately. Had to change my bedroom temp from 40F to 78F. No, literally. 2) Yes. A week ago. 13 months out. Bedroom temp is down to 60F. 3) It's not just lack of insulation, but that's part of it. What you're experiencing now will get worse, and then it'll get better. 4) See above. Your body is busy with other things.

    I would contact a bariatric therapist on your team or any therapist you can get your hands on. Everyone needs help these days so finding any therapist will be a bit of a challenge but worth the effort. It’s true that weight loss is 90% a mind game. When I get stuck, it’s a strength to ask for help. You’ve already shown strength by asking for help here. Keep us posted on your discoveries.-Meg

    Weight gain

    This. Due to where the sleeve is made (we MGB'ers have one too, it's just not closed at the end), the stretch thing isn't all it's cracked up to be. The exception being if made by an RNY surgeon who makes it too high up in the stomach. And I mean ... it's perfectly okay to need the additional help a bypass provides. For some, the sleeve may simply not adjust the set point down far enough. If I had knee surgery and, despite my best efforts, I couldn't walk properly, I'd go in again. If I feel this surgery doesn't work well long-term, I'll call my team. No shame in that.* *of course, the mental side of eating and obesity could be what needs to be worked on. I'm typing this on my way to my bariatric therapist, as it were. Still going every 3 months to make sure I stay in a good mindset.
  14. Hi y'all! I was sleeved December 08, 2021. Surgery Weight: 263 Current Weight: 231 Obviously I know I won't continue to lose at this same rate in the upcoming months but getting such a huge head start has been such a motivation. The struggle will come when I don't see those same numbers and I'm just going to have to remember that slow and steady wins the race. Even though weight loss has been great thus far my energy has sucked. I'm meeting my liquid and protein goals daily and taking a bariatric multivitamin. I don't know if it's just that I have a very active job (Bartender- lots of lifting, squatting, stocking, walking- usually 4-6 miles a day) and I'm currently consuming only a third of the calories I used to....or if its just my Hashimoto's flaring up with all the stress on my body of late, hoping things begin to equalize in the next few weeks though. Being this tired all the time is a real bummer.
  15. Oh, I meant in comparison to what you likely used to eat which can mess with you too - ‘How can this be enough food? No wonder I’m hungry’ type thinking. That in itself can be a new learning: understanding that this is enough food. I did a lot of general reading, nothing in particular. I watched some of Dr Vuong videos but particularly like Dr Matthew Weiner. They focus on bariatrics not therapy but Dr Vuong had some good ‘come to Jesus’ type moments. (You’ll have to scroll through his Covid videos & other stuff he has - like go back 2+ years). It was pretty obvious what I had been doing didn’t work & I needed to start from scratch. I dud lots of random google searches often from things people said on this forum. Lot of crap out there though so be careful. Check out their qualifications. As a place to start, I found success by asking myself why. Why do I feel hungry? Why do I want something specifically sweet or salty? Why am I looking for something to eat? Sometimes I really have to break down my answer. Sometimes, there’s a legitimate reason. Missed a meal. Been low in my calorie intake for the day. Hot, sweaty day & low salt intake. Then I look for protein rich food, salt some cucumber, have some fruit, etc. If there’s no real reason the cause for me is usually boredom. I try to find something to do to distract myself, have something to drink or make myself wait for 30mins. The wanting to eat disappears 99% of the time which proves it wasn’t a legitimate need for food in the first place. All the best.

    Gastric bypass surgery

    no one loses 15 lbs a week for the first 2-3 months. There might be *one* week out of that 2-3 month period where a few people might lose that much (although I've been hanging out on bariatric boards for about seven years and have never heard of anyone losing that much in a week - so if so, they'd be outliers - unless, of course, they started out the size of someone on "My 600 lb Life"). It's really pretty unusual for us "normal" WLS patients to lose more than 25 or 30 lbs the first month, and then it drops after that. It seems like most of us are somewhere in the 15-25 lb range the first month - but again, there are always a few who lose more than that (maybe 30 or so lbs). But 15 lbs a week, no - or at least I've never heard or read about anyone who's lost that much. someone else quoted that MIchigan study on here a year or so ago, and those of us who have been hanging out here for a few years found it pretty unbelievable. I think the five lbs a week they quoted isn't unusual at all - but 15 is a huge stretch. Maybe it's just the wording they used (??). If so, too bad - because that can - and probably does - get misinterpreted. to the OP: I lost 16 lbs the first month, and I started out at almost 400 lbs. I'm not sure how much you've lost or what your expectations are, but I do think a lot of people's perceptions and expectations are based on shows like "My 600 lb Life". But you have to keep in mind that those people start out MUCH heavier than your average WLS patient.

    1 Year Post OP and I think I am alcoholic

    First of all, I am so, SO proud of you for naming it out loud and asking for help. That is the biggest, hardest step and you did it! You need to know your feelings are completely valid. Trauma, chronic pain, massive weight loss - those are all HUGE things to deal with and everything you're feeling is normal. If your current therapist isn't helping, it may be time to look for a new one. You can try PsychologyToday. com or call your insurance for a list of in-network providers and see who might specialize in PTSD and disordered eating/addiction. Transfer addiction is a real thing, it happens to a lot of bariatric patients, and you are not alone. Do you have any hobbies or past times you enjoy? Are you engaging in those or other forms of regular self care? If not, maybe try and work in some of those things. You deserve to have rest and downtime, but getting it via alcohol won't serve you in the long-term. You are worthy of health and happiness and taking small steps that align to those will make all the difference in the world. We are cheering you on.
  18. Thank you a lot Arabesque, this helps me so much! What do you mean my 7 oz is not a big portion? And 1350 kcal enough?.. my basal rate is 1200 kcal and i habe still to loose weight. You are so right - i thought it hat been and nutrition problem but it is not. Its bad Habit and wanting comfort an teasing. Therapie is right now not possible, no free client space. I want so badly work on my habits. Do you have podcast/book or online bariatric Programm recommendations which workes for you?   19. I’ve done a lot of research before my surgery. Also before and after bariatric surgery we are required to attend a number of classes with the nutritionists. Then the nutritionists explains in detail of how our surgeries are a tool to eating healthy foods in smaller amounts. She also makes sure that everyone in the class understands the symptoms are for “dumping”. My nutritionist explained to me that dumping isn’t just from eating cakes or other bakery foods, it can also be caused from certain fruits that are high sugar such as bananas.

    “Real” food vs Bariatric foods

    I am 3 1/2 months out, I don't eat any bariatric or protein infused prepared foods and I have been consistently hitting my protein goals. I eat a lot of cottage cheese and marinated grilled chicken among other things. It can be done but it involves planning and it helps if you know how to cook so things don't get boring.
  21. 25 days out and down 18 pounds. I am sticking to the once a week weigh in. I agree that it feels like it’s coming off sooo slooow. I reminded myself that I would have overeaten over the holidays so I “saved” 10 more pounds. We all need Jedi mind tricks. How are folks doing with their vitamins? I’m not as consistent as I want to be yet. Doing a once a day chewable bariatric vitamin and 3 patches - Vitamin D, vitamin B and Collagen.
  22. Hi all! Hope everyone had some good holidays! I wanted to touch base on how horribly the hospitals are doing here in Indianapolis. They have postponed 50+ surgeries at my bariatric center and they claim that it’s happening all over Indianapolis at the other 3 places. They say it’s due to low staff and Covid. Anyone here in Indy waiting on a surgery date? Also anyone else from ANY state had to postpone surgery due to Covid during this time? to give a ball park- I completed EVERYTHING in October even though I would have been done months before that but they couldn’t fit me in to get the rest of my pre-op testing done. Got approved for insurance and January 4th I’m still waiting on a surgery date.

    Hello, my name is Sherie and I'm from Texas. I just got started last month for bariatric surgery. I still have to do the TNE, and see my dietician and psychiatric for an eval. I haven't got a surgery date yet. But hoping for the end of the month or beginning of February. I also have an appointment to see my cardiologist because they found something in my ultrasound. Hopefully it's nothing and I can get approved for the surgery. Getting excited. Can't wait.

    Hey There! Any December 2021 Surgery Friends?

    Hello all. Had VSG done 12/20/21. (Date was pushed up 1 day from original planned date) I’m 4’11 and was 186 day of surgery. I followed through on most of my preop liquid diet. Clear liquids, protein shakes, and non starch veggies only. Gas pains were the absolute worst. Tried to walk and they were gone in a week. Was feeling better and all of a sudden I got sharp migraine nausea retching and vomiting. My daughter ended up getting sick too throwing up bile. Was told she had COVID although I was negative and we hadn’t gone out but to 1 othodontist visit. I went to ED twice for IV and pain meds. It’s been terrible getting a hold of my bariatric team still no word. Better today, but still nauseated and now having earache. I have regrets. I thought I was mentally prepared and this is so uncomfortable. Im allowed to eat purée today and I’ve done ok with just strawberries and ice chips.
  25. Thank you so much!😊 I don't have a therapist currently but I am almost positive I have ADD so next month at my annual I plan on discussing ideas/meds/therapy referral for it. It has made doing online school difficult at times, well a lot. And honestly the job I have (vet receptionist) requires so much focus and multi-tasking WELL I think takes all ability to do the same amount of focus later the same day on schoolwork. I could find a therapist without my PCP doing a referral but the therapist I found is in the same network as my PCP (Baylor Scott & White) and she specializes in several things including bariatrics so I figured I'd wait a few months to get a referral from my PCP...I called to get in sooner but my PCP was booked until March and my appointment was in early February so I was like I'll just wait thanks...🙃 Agree on the snacks thing although does eating my allotted food for breakfast/lunch etc over the course of my day count as snacking if it isn't extra stuff? And yes, I agree with the "low sugar" etc snacks open up the wormhole. I just signed up for the monthly BariatricPal box so I am hoping I will discover new snacks and foods that are specifically for us I can add into my rotations---I think a lot of my snacks while normal aren't really 'normal' for me anymore--I bought myself some almonds but struggle with the idea of spending 180 of my calories on like 6 grams of protein--I do love the Greek yogurt at 120 calories and anywhere from 12-20 grams of protein! I can't avoid the break area, I work at a vet clinic and it is not so strategically located right by the doctor's office where I am in and out all day to talk to my doctors about cases. And our break area is a sink, counter with microwave and snacks piled on top of it. 😑 I need to work on my will power and I am glad to see the holidays to be on their way out! I have found with me, cold turkey is the best way to nix cravings. I don't get to be one of those people who can have "just one piece" here and there because that one piece on day 1 becomes me constantly snacking and seeking out sugar on day 5 or 6....it snowballs. I am debating going back for a week or two to the preop diet I had which was 2-3 protein shakes with a sensible dinner of lean meat and a vegetable and maybe I'll add in a fruit depending on how that goes to get me back on track. Stupid brain liking stupid garbage sugar. 😤
