  1. That could be because you can’t eat very much at a time? My dr told me that I will feel like I am grazing in the beginning but my goal is to get to eating 3 meals and 2 healthy snacks per day. Have you tried eating low carb/ low calorie fillers? Like vegetables, salad, etc? i know that my appetite will return. When that happens my plan is to keep lots of raw veggies and a low calorie Greek yogurt veggie dip on hand at all times. I do understand what you are going through. I went through the exact same with my sleeve. Hang in there and try to devise a plan for healthy options for the rough times. Once you reach a year out, the weight will come back on quickly if we are not careful.
  2. I had the sleeve. Thanks for the great feedback. I will surely discuss with my dietitian too. I need to remember the 3 meals per day plan and not do this as a "snack". That's where the triple zero greek yogurt supplements my protein. I just don't wanna bust a leak. I do sip it down over 20-30min, but if I'm just forcing undigested soup into my intestines by having more than 8oz that's good to know also.

    The Maintenance Thread

Volume question. I am 10 months post RNY. I can drink a shake in 10 minutes without issue or 5 oz yogurt with a 1/4 cup of granola on top in 10 min or less the same with an egg, 1/4 or slice of cheese and cup of spinach cooked in it but it takes closer to 15. At dinner I can eat maybe 2oz if meat with maybe 1/3 cup veggies and sometimes can’t finish that. I am estimating I can eat 1/2 cup of food not much more. I’m trying to maintain and have to eat sliders and carbs to get calories so I’m not eating much fir healthy veggies. When were you able to eat more volume? I have read a cup of food at the 1 year mark. I don’t want to force it but I hate creating bad habits to get calories in.

    Daily Menus for Maintenance

Maintenance : 5'2" / 1yr PO Sleeve / ??? lbs ---------------------------------------- Last weigh in was on Dec 18th (4 days ago) and I clocked in at 115 lbs even. As I was in the hospital for a couple days from my PS, and I'm wearing all these compression garments AND have drains hanging off of me I figure I won't bother with weighing as it'll show an inflated number anyway. December Surgery dates???

I agree with lots of things being super sweet! Even plain bottles water has a sweetness to me right now 😩. I’m only drinking water, protein water occasionally, broth and Gatorade zero. Tomorrow I can add in more things like cream of wheat, sugar free yogurt and pudding, and milk..so excited lol. I was slightly dehydrated in the hospital but the made that was better before discharge and the Gatorade zeros have really helped me. I just used the first week to really focus on fluids. Sipping is hard for me, I bought crushed ice because that really helped
  6. I'm a loser baby

    Surgery Day!!

Not getting more than 20-30g in. I’m so sick of shakes and broth. I tried greek yogurt today and was able to stomach it so hoping that helps. I’m also walk, walk, walking. Just hang in there and do what you can! My sleeve only hurts a little if I drink a big gulp of water on accident but doesn’t seem to mind anything else.

    Plastics Post-op Days 0-2

****** I had meant to write the entry below as a blog entry at first, but I ended up posting it to the thread "A Tale of Two Arm Lifts (rs & ms.sss)" yesterday instead. Anyway, I am now including it here as originally planned ****** Get comfortable, this is a long one... So here is the additional backstory info to my PS journey: So I ended up getting a last-minute Tummy Tuck two days ago (Dec 18), along with my arm and breast lift. Back in June 2019, when I initially scheduled my procedures, I was going to get an arm lift, a breast lift (to address side boob skin), and a tummy tuck. The tummy tuck was actually partially covered by provincial insurance. Basically the panniculectomy part was covered and I we only need to pay out of pocket for muscle tightening or any required Lipo. But sometime around August or September, I decided to forego the tummy tuck because I thought that I could live with the state my stomach was in, and I didn't want to have more surgery if I didn't really need to. So I called my surgeons office and let them know. Fast forward four months later and I'm at the registration desk at the hospital on surgery day. I'm signing all the papers, and one of them is a confirmation surgery procedure form and lo and behold the tummy tuck is still on there. Apparently, the fact that the tummy tuck was removed was not properly communicated to the hospital. (As an aside, this is a perfect example of why confirmation of surgeries is necessary at registration!!) I had a discussion with my surgeon: he said the OR is already booked and set up for all three procedures including the tummy tuck. So if I wanted to, we could go ahead as originally planned back in June, or not. Whatever I decided was fine with him. If I didn't want the tummy tuck, there would be some paperwork to do beforehand, but it was doable since the OR was booked for all 3 procedures, and there was time to do the paperwork/system corrections and still complete the arm and breast lifts in that time. So now I had a discussion with Mr.: It wouldn't really cost much more, and they were all set up for it already anyway, so why not? It's funny because the decision making process felt like when you're in a grocery store line and decide to buy that pack of gum at the checkout. It's been almost 48 hours since the completion of my surgeries...here's what's happened so far: Day 0: Got to hospital at 7am and all the above happened. I got on the operating table at 9:30am, and don't know what time I woke up at recovery. The surgery was supposed to be 4 hours. All I remember was that it was 4pm when I got rolled into my room. That first night after the surgeries was relatively pain-free as I was drugged up and in bed the entire time. I slept a lot but not for very long periods of time. They put these leg type massagers on my legs that work kind of like a blood pressure cuff. Each one inflates a chamber with air starting from ankle to thigh, to squeeze my leg nicely and then deflates. Then the other one on the other leg does the same thing. Its to promote circulation and prevent blood clots. I've had them on the entire time (except when going to bathroom or taking a short walk) and I LOVE THEM. I want to buy one of these contraptions for home! The nurse said that I am the first patient she's met that likes these things. Which I find hard to believe because these things are awesome. Didn't eat anything all day, other than Water, a cup of tea and 1/2 an unsweetened apple juice box. Day 1: Now the next day I felt the pain for the first time when my drugs wore off and I had to get out of bed to go to the washroom (they took my catheter out). Oh. My. God. When I twisted my body and put my foot on the ground, I felt like I was being stabbed in my hip with a large knife. It was so painful that when I walked I couldn't put my heel down. I had to do I sort of walk–tiptoe shuffle to the toilet. So first lesson: do not twist your body. Because of the tummy tuck, I have to walk hunched over and this quickly puts a strain on your back. So second lesson: walk with the help of your IV pole/cane/walker/buddy. I have 2 drains in my tummy, which are mildly annoying. I forgot about them once when I got out of bed and pulled on one a bit which caused some bleeding. Boo. I was surprised that I could move my arms relatively freely and pain free. I could even put weight on my arms to lift myself out of bed, type on my laptop, feed myself, and go to the washroom by myself. I may not have been very efficient, but I could do it. Also, I could brush my teeth but not my hair. Nor could i adjust my head pillows. Basically anything where I have to raise my arms above shoulder height is a no-go. My boobs didn't/don't hurt at all. As if nothing was even done there. I got to see all the work done when the nurse changed my dressings. My arms are tiny. My boobs are nice and perky with matching nipples (my previous breast reduction had one of the nipples wrinkle/fold over at the outer edge and my guy fixed it). My tummy is wrinkle free and my new belly button looks better than the old one. My inner thighs from the front has been smoothed out! This was an unexpected bonus My va-jay-jay, however, is quite "perky". When I look down sitting in bed it stares right up at me. My nurse said she noticed it was swollen. She said it is a combination of being yanked up and the use of the stomach binder. Didn't show it to surgeon this first day, but will remember to bring i up when I see him before I leave. Today I had a cup of coffee, 1/2 a chicken breast and some beef Jerky. Day 2: Now today I feel exponentially better. I got an a good seven hours of continuous sleep. When I woke up I could feel that my pain meds had worn off but I was able to get out of bed and walk to the washroom just fine. I can tell I'm walking much faster now and am much less hunched over. I could probably skip the pain meds from now on but I think based on @sillykitty's comments, i'll take them for another day or so. Mr. has already filled my prescriptions, so I may as well take them. I'll play it by ear. I find that the only real pain I get is from twisting my torso. I can easily do a sit up or leg lift motion pain free, but if I twist in any way, I get a sharp pain. Everything else is bearable. On a scale of 1 to 10, I'd say my pain level is about 1.5. Compare this to the pain of WLS recovery, which I would have given an 8 at its worst. They took the IV out this morning because my swollen hands were basically embedding that entry thing into my flesh and it was starting to hurt. They tried to put a new one in twice but couldn't find a vein because I'm too swollen. They asked if I was OK with them trying a third time, and I was all, No Thanks. IV insertion hurts, man! So they are off finding an alternate antibiotic to administer without an IV. I'm supposed to be discharged sometime today but honestly I'd rather stay because I love these leg massager things. Plus I like the adjustable hospital bed! Anyway just hanging around now waiting for my surgeon and next instructions. P.S. I ate 1/2 an omelette & a peach yogurt cup so far today.
  8. Ah, but I did! I didn't post them cuz I was too tired, LOL. Here they are. They aren't much better. I ate/drank 1/2 the apple juice in #2 , 1/2 the chicken breast in #3 and 1/2 the omelette and the whole yogurt in #4. And I had the coffee or tea in all of them.

    December Surgery dates???

I haven't had a bowel movement and will be doing Miralax tomorrow. My husband has to go into work and my daughter has ballet so I'll have to take her. She's 5 and is able to get in and out of her carseat by herself. I was told no lifting more than 20lbs for 6 weeks. I'm sure I'll be exhausted after her ballet class it's 1.5hrs long. I want to go out shopping once my husband gets home. Fluids yesterday were not good for me and I felt it in the morning. Today I'm doing much better with my liquids. Hubby bought me some sugar free blueberry yogurt. I had 4 oz total today and mixed in some unflavored protein powder. I also had about 4oz of decaf coffee mixed with a little french vanilla premier protein and a 1/2 tsp of sugar free pudding. That tasted so yummy and not sweet at all to me. Later tonight I plan on some cream of mushroom and will try and mix some of the protein powder into it. I have this horrible gas bubble in the middle of my chest that won't go away. I've gone up and down my stairs a few times and walked in the house. I just took some gas-x to see if I can get rid of it. I'm belching and passing gas so at least some of it is coming out. How was today for everyone else?

    Favorite protein shake

Well I like Premier Protein RTD in my coffee. I just found the Fairlife Milk one. Hold me. So. Dang. Good. I use Isopure powders to make smoothies. Lately I've been making a lot of frappaccinos with ice, coffee, a scoop of powder and some psyllium husks for thickness and some SF Torani peppermint or pumpkin pie spice syrups. I also love making blueberry yogurt ones with banana pp and Vitacost powdered Peanut butter Slim. Dang. Now I want on! LOL

    No eggs on purée?

Every plan is different, sweetie. And you really need to follow the plan. As others have said eggs can be hard on your new tum--I think part of it is the yolk? I never had any issues with them, but I didn't have many issues progressing and I went from liquids to fork tender mushies rather than purees. But I do think VSGs are different cuz the pouch & incision is so long in the active part of the stomach. With an RNY the the remnant stomach isn't exposed to needing to churn food around. It will pass quickly. I promise! Focus on other things rather than food during this time. Easier said than done. But having said that, you could always call or email with your RD and ask to be advanced. I use a method from Tony Bourdain only instead of adding sour cream, I add Fage Greek Nonfat Yogurt to soft eggs while scrambling them slowly. And I mix it in. That way they cook, but stay super creamy and go down very easily! When the eggs are halfway done, add the yogurt and stir it in, then season it. Yum. Now I want those for breakfast! I also love soft boiled eggs and savory and sweet egg custard! I also use a lot of Real Egg Whites and poach them and they are a very soft, tofu consistency. You can always blend up egg drop soup too. But call or email your RD first!!!!

    No eggs on purée?

I’ve had a lot of restrictions for various reasons and it does get a bit stressing mentally but I guess I am also creature of habit and stick to things I’m familiar with or know works. I rotate between certain things and slowly try adding things. Try to find a way to ease the mental burden of it being a diet and how long or feeling deprived of something. it’s a new way of life you are in. Try making a soft boiled egg and see how you feel eating it. Also BariatricPal has a variety of things that can work on purée like protein soups. I hated the purée phase and it hated me. My phases lasted longer than most. But everyone is different. I started having soft veggie burger. BariatricPal makes a protein mash potato. get in the head space try not to worry over time. Try to mix the foods on your list in creative ways. You can do it. You will get through this. Try to focus on what the goal is, changing your approach to food. But maybe I’m just weird I don’t need a lot variety. Just the little things like the occasional sugar free whipped topping on my yogurt ... (although the almond reddi whip is good too)

Really need some help with protein

I drink original ripple milk EVERY day and I love it! In the early days post OP, I'll use both ripple milk and Pescience shake powder to make a vegan shake and it tasted freaking good!!!!! Pescience powders come in different flavors and I [emoji173] cookies and cream! The combination of the Ripple milk and the shake gives you about 32grams of protein per shake. I would occasionally add Greek yogurt for a load of almost 35 to 40 grams in a go. Sent from my SM-N960U using BariatricPal mobile app

    No eggs on purée?

I do the protein powder in two good yogurt every day, excellent way to get my protein in. But, I am getting a little tired of the same foods every day. The list of protein foods on my list at this stage is only 11 foods. Eggs are not one of them. It just gets a little psychologically hard since I have been on this diet for over a month and will now have to do it for another month. I’m not really sure how that is supposed to help me and what’s worse is that it is only this way because my first appointment was canceled the day of, I didn’t have any time left from work to take another day off, was finally placated with getting a telephone appointment, and now they “can’t fit me in” for another month. It is all just weighing on me mentally.

    No eggs on purée?

It’s interesting because I couldn’t tolerate most purée foods except maybe good culture cottage cheese, but soft boiled eggs were more easily to tolerate. I also did a slow cooked custard type scrambled egg. Just start with less at first. Egg is a good protein source. A good thing to start is mixing TwoGood yogurt with protein powder (I use PEScience select) or even use 4 ounces of Fage total zero Greek yogurt with half a scoop of PEScience select protein powder and a little bit of ripple milk to thin it out as needed (I personally prefer pea protein Ripple milk, it’s more sustainable and tasty than almond milk and has protein in it I use plain unsweetened but they have unsweetened vanilla too) apologies I ramble ...
  17. I dont think it is but would love to know how to get in 90-100G of protein in vegetarian food in around 600 calories without relying solely on Shakes. IF ANYONE has a breakdown of how they do it, I would follow it to a T because its impossible as far as I can see unless you have all greek yogurt and cottage cheese all day long... And no one should eat an all dairy diet.
  18. Hey everyone. My name is Claire and I'm 29, I recently had my lap-band removed and converted to the gastric sleeve. I had my surgery on 12/4/2019 so I'm almost 2 full weeks out. I've experienced a number of emotions since the surgery but most prevalent at the moment is depression. I feel so sad and so overwhelmed with how much weight I have to lose. After the lap-band I lost over 100lbs, my lowest weight was 154. I managed to gain over 200lbs within the last 5 years, where my alcoholism and addiction became increasingly problematic until I got sober 2 years ago. I'm impatient and I want the weight to "fall off" like everyone told me it would. All of the comments from friends and family like "you're going to lose weight so fast, you'll look so great" were nice before the surgery, but now I find myself feeling pressure and unsatisfied with my progress in 2 weeks. I've lost 22lbs since surgery. I'll have my 2 week post-op appointment tomorrow. I'm following my post-op diet and have been drinking plenty of water, protein shakes, some yogurt, and some thinned soups. I eat less than 400 calories a day. Logically, I know that 22lbs in 2 weeks is great but I still feel so depressed and discouraged. I'm not sure what's going on with me. I know I have to make lifestyle changes to lose weight and keep it off, I've done it before and I know I can do it again but for whatever reason my brain is telling me that I'm going to fail this time. It's scary. Just looking for some support or advice from others. Thanks, Claire
  19. Great plan! I'd throw a can of cream of chicken or cream of mushroom into it to make it a little more "luxe" feeling. And then stir in a spoon of plain Greek yogurt at the end. Sounds delish!

    PreWorkout Eating/Food Idea

Greek yogurt would make a great pre or post-workout snack. Has protein and carbs to keep you going.

    Not satisfied with Unjury

Everyone’s tastes are so different! I hated syntrax nectars, protein waters felt like swallowing fine strands of hair that stuck to my throat, isopure made me ill just to sniff it. I had a hard time finding ready to drink protein without added iodine. A few things I tolerated are: for protein powder I use PEScience select and I started out mixing it with ripple milk (plant based milk) and then started to mix it in either TwoGood coconut yogurt or plain Fage Total zero Greek yogurt. Has a frosting like texture. for ready to drink a few options there is labrada lean body (love cookies and cream) I think it’s called boost max protein (at the grocery) shamrock shakes, and my favorite (plant based) Koia cinnamon horchata. Sometimes I mix cafe bustelo instant coffee in my cinnamon horchata and top with a little almond whip. Honestly what I wish I had closer to post op were BariatricPal pink grapefruit protein shots. And to get extra fluids later on they can be mixed with ocean spray 5 calories juice (I like the grapefruit) BariatricPal juice protein is also more tolerable to me especially mixed with some ocean spray. You can get a variety pack to figure out the flavor you prefer. Also their protein soups are more palatable.

Mixing TwoGood yogurt with protein powder (I highly recommend PEScience select) makes almost a frosting like consistency. Very little sugar depends on the flavor of PEScience maximum 4 grams. But lots of protein and low calorie. Even with a full scoop of PEScience it’s 190-200 calories for a whopping 36 grams protein. Very filling. You can top with a bit of sugar free land o lakes whipped topping to make it a sweet treat. if you crave salty snacks BariatricPal has so many options. I keep trying new things. Also not all protein bars are created equal, it could be an ingredient that made you sick or being too early on for them. try not to feel left out of holidays just because of food. It’s that kind of thinking we need to change. And you can have your own treats in your bag with you that fit your plan. and honestly if cooking tempts you too much, can someone else do it? Or get things pre-made. I cook for my mom but have never been tempted to eat what I cook while I’m cooking. For years I worked on the head part of things, not eating just because my company I was with was eating or more so not eating what they ate just because .. I had a hard time if a friend gave me food I wouldn’t turn it away or waste it. She mocked me for it. Honestly I’m not much good for advice in this department since it just my mom and I now. What little family we have is in another state, doesn’t care, and my sister would prefer if I didn’t exist. anyway, the advice to occupy yourself with other things while people eat is also very good advice. And what food you do have, savor it in tiny bites.

when I'm craving chocolate I take a thing of super low calorie vanilla yogurt (like Light & Fit, Two Good, or Carbmaster) and mix in about a half tablespoon of unsweetened cocoa powder. If I want something more festive, I'll sometimes top it with a little sugar free Cool Whip and/or a few raspberries.
  24. Yep, that's it. She has severe GERD. I told her that high carb diet is one of the causes. "I might have to give up my favorite italian pastas?" She needs to give up more than pasta if she wants to have a healthy retirement (she just retired at age 62). She has been vegetarian all her life. So diet is lots of bread, pasta, muffins, bagels, potato casseroles, milk, flavored yogurt, cereal and veggies. Also, has had severe sleep apnea for at least 10 years but refuses to get help because doesn't want to use CPAP. All six of us have small airways. She is the only one not on CPAP. So she hasn't come to the point that her health isn't impotant enough yet to make lifestyle changes. Sent from my SM-T580 using BariatricPal mobile app
  25. Wow that sounds like me in the first 2-3 weeks, not 3 months. By 4-5 weeks I could eat a yogurt in a few minutes. I think it's a good thing though? You'll probably be in the top percentage of weight loss.
