Questions about wls
Cher in NYC replied to jennifer47's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
My surgeon does not operate on smokers. I had to quit at least 30 days before my surgery date. With the gastric bypass, I had to commit to never smoking another cigarette again. They stated I could expect a 100% complication rate if I start smoking again after RNY GB. With the sleeve, smoking is highly discouraged of course but it’s effects on the surgery are not as known. This is what I was told by my surgeon, the advice you get may vary based on your surgeon. -

Yes I had my surgery done on April 29th and I feel amazing. I had no complications and went back to work one week after. I've lost 22lbs since surgery and 38 since I begin the process in October. Make sure you follow all of your requirements and before you know it surgery day will arrive. My advice to you is never measure your weight loss sucess or journey with those of others.

I am almost 2 weeks out from GBP and other than the damn gas (which follows ALL laproscopic surgery), everything has been totally fine and am 95% back to normal. Im off painkillers completely and stopped them about 7 days after surgery. I had a slight complication with my bladder not restarting, but that had more to do with surgery and not with the GBP itself. So if you get either of the weight loss surgeries, you will be experiencing the same type of recovery afterwards. Both the sleeve and the bypass will make you feel full. The other advantage GBP has is that it also incorporated malabsorption as well and not just restriction.

I got the Sleeve done in 2013. I have no issues, I had no complications and I feel and look fantastic l

many people never have complications - and for those who do, they're usually pretty minor (like a stricture - which is an easy fix). Major complications are pretty rare. These are very safe surgeries.

I take cheap vitamins! haha I use Flinstones Complete because if you co pare centrum complete has the same components and nutritions says its great. I also use Caltrate bone and health D3 600 calcium. walmart brand B complex and I do add Magnesium glycinate 400 chewable just to keep me regular because I dont like to take milk of mag and believe I stay away from food that may result in dumping syndrome now way in haities do I want to expeience that! (splenda does not give me dumping) Ive lost 78pounds since January 29th and 47 pounds since day of surgery 4/10/19 (8weeks). if I slack on vitamins I stall its wierd so I dont miss anymore! I had 1 complication it was a kidney stone but I heard its rare painful but rare amd mostly guys develop them. my doc says prob because I already had kidney issues to begin with so he doesnt really consider it complication. I consider my surgery complication free! I love it. Im only 36 and best decision ever! I used to rely on food. i find myself chewing up a piece of meat and spitting it out now thinking what the heck I dont want this right now. its totally cool but wierd!

i had the lap band 10 years ago. had complications 1 month out all fluid removed gained 55 pounds over the 10yrs tried every diet in the world. my stomach ruptured from the band eroded thru.

Wow. These are the stories I like to hear. Any complications after the bypass? Also what vitamins are the ones you take.? Sent from my SM-G955U using BariatricPal mobile app

I thought there was no guarantee you'd dump with RNY? That seems like a weird reason to choose it. There are more complications with bypass and it's malabsorption component. I choose sleeve for that reason. Both surgeries are a TOOL and your long term success depends on the lifestyle choices you make in the years afterward.

Revision Lapband to RNY
Mint2bskinny replied to Lady B 925's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
I am 8 weeks po GLB to RNY stayed in hospital 2 days and was fine on my own. Took pain meds and drank fluids for 2 weeks. My mother was a few miles away and available to drive me to Surgeons office if complication that was a contract had to sign with dr that I had someone to drive me with in 2 weeks. I hurt to get up and down but I tried to walk every hour, pee, and replace my water and protein drink while I was up. Laying in bed was only hard part and honeslt I slept in a recliner for 2 weeks anyways it was more comfy. Good luck we will be here for support. -
It depends on your health issues. Their situation where people have chosen to go with the sleeves and then have to convert to gastric bypass. I think that you should just do a lot of research on both procedures and she was which one is best for you. I did the gastric bypass and I'm 14 days post-op and I haven't had any abnormal complication, but it is a challenge. Both procedures are just tools to help you loose waves so either way it's going to be challenging. What I love about this app is that the support that you received from different people all over. I wish you the best of luck with whatever decision you make keep us updated. Sent from my SM-G950F using BariatricPal mobile app

Maggie, how do you feel about having the surgery after having complications? Any regrets? I hope all is better now.
-
Hi everyone, new here. My surgery was on 5-9-19 and I didn’t want many people to know because I got a lot of “you don’t need the surgery” so I only told a few close family & friends and my boss. But I complications during my surgery and they had to go back into emergency surgery on me and my friend that went with me told our other friends and when I got back I it seemed like everyone knew lol

I was supposed to have gastric bypass March 27th. When my surgeon got in there I had a lot of scar tissue from a previous surgery and he said had he done the surgery I would have been at high risk for the rest of my life for bowel obstruction because where they would have reattached the intestines were in a bad place in comparison to taking down that scar tissue. I came out of surgery so disappointed but glad he didn’t risk it. So I know that is a complication but in my case was from a previous surgery

Hi Nana_kat, I am Beth, my grandkids also call me Nana, I was wondering if you have any regrets of doing the sleeve surgery? I am just starting the process of going to the appointments to prepare. I have not been to the first appt yet. I have spoken to one other person that went through this but she was younger. How old were you when you had the sleeve and did you have any complications?
-
Hi! Nice to meet another Nana! I had my surgery in Dec 2016 and have not regretted a moment of it. Prior to my sleeve, I had the lap band and hated every moment of it. I haven't had any issues with gerd, dumping or vitamin deficiency, either. Just make sure you follow all your surgeon and dietitian's instructions and you'll be fine. Please feel free to ask any questions you think of in the future.

Overtraining & Stalls???? Frustrated.....
summerset replied to GansettRam74's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
People tend to make it complicated. If you aren't a professional athlete who needs to devote the proverbial 101% of her/his to sports I don't think it's really complicated. As long as you are in a calorie deficit you're going to lose weight, no matter if you eat food x or y at a specific time z or not. Up the intensity of your workouts so they feel like workouts again and as far as eating concerns I won't dish out any advice. -

Are you sure you want to do this?
Stella84 replied to Everything's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
Sadly this same thing happened to me at the same hospital. I was also low BMI. The intake nurse did say something about my “Low” weight. I was annoyed but shrugged it off, BUT THEN....the Anesthesiologist came and and rudely asked me why I was doing the surgery with such a low BMI...I stuttered, lapband..complication..unfill...rapid weight regain etc. but yes NOT his business especially not 5 minutes before major surgery. It gets worse. He then starts lecturing me and tells me the success is up here (touching my head!) and not here (touching my stomach!) Now I was angry. But what to do? Ask for another anesthesiologist? Walk out? Luckily? The surgeon came in moments later and we went off to surgery. I made a formal complaint to the hospital. -
Intermittent Fasting Daily Menu/Results/Accountability
FluffyChix replied to FluffyChix's topic in Post-op Diets and Questions
Hi James and welcome! Congrats on your upcoming revision. I hope it goes smoothly and you are able to progress into your stages without complication!!! Woot! I think 2-3 months to start IF/EF is a bit ambitious. I'd target 6-9 months or until: 1. Your new tool stops working efficiently. Give it time to do its job. And really focus on maximizing YOUR part in its efficacy (ie making healthy choices, deeply nutritious and low calorie dense foods, exercise, follow your surgeon's plans, follow 30/30, take your vitamins, plan/weigh/measure/log every bite of food, weigh daily for accountability, no booze, etc). It's really important to make good choices, but to let your tool do the job its meant to do. Right? 2. You can easily get all your water in (around 100+oz day). 3. You can easily get all your protein needs met with real whole dense proteins. That's usually a 6-9month progression or longer. ****** But, you surely can do TRE (time restricted eating) to consume your foods in a 16:8 window. At first, even that will be a challenge for you. You do not want to over-consume your capacity at any time or in any stage. And if you are compressing your eating window, that risk of consuming larger meals to compensate exists. So a 16:8 might take you 3-4 months post surgery to be ready to do that--maybe even longer depending on your rate of healing and size of restriction. But even setting a 13- or 14hour fasting schedule would benefit you per Dr. Longo. And that's basically an overnight fast. ****** I don't know about doing a WF for pre-surgery. They usually want your liver emptied, but your protein levels high so you will be at an ideal healthy level for surgery. Pray about that and ask your RD. If I had it to do over again, I would definitely do a bowel prep and make sure I was 100% cleaned out. Gosh mine post surgery was ridiculously terrible. One of the only complications I experienced at 3 weeks. Rosemary's Baby bad. So I'd bowel prep about 3 days before surgery, then do clear liquids for the last 2 days presurgery, making sure you are getting all your electrolytes. ****** Here's Dr. Mindy Pelz's Resetter's Tribe on FB. https://www.facebook.com/groups/resetters/ -
My surgery was scheduled for 11 am. I was NPO at midnight but could have clear liquids until 6 am. The NPO didnt bother me and after my shake for dinner I didn't feel the need for anything else. I got up at 5 and had a cup of tea and watched the news. Then I showered and put on comfy clothes and waiting until it was time to head to the hospital. I got registered and only had to wait about 10 minutes before heading back. In preop they got my IV in and took a bunch of health questions. Then I got to walk. And walk and walk and walk. My surgeon wants all his bariatric patients walking before surgery to prevent blood clots. No laying on the cart watching Price is Right for me. And after 45 minutes of walking up and down the same small hallway I definitely wanted to. 11 oclock came and went, as it sometimes can in the surgery world. His first case started a little later than scheduled and was more complicated than anticipated. I talked with anesthesia and walked some more. Then I finally talked to my surgeon. It was getting closer. My preop nurse then gave me a couple medications including IV pepcid and a shot of Lovenox (blood thinner) in my abdomen. I waited another 15 minutes or so while the OR Team got the operating room ready and when the nurse came to get me it was a couple more questions from him and then I was wheeled back. HA! I wish. I got to walk back to the operating room as well, hop up on the OR table and wait for anesthesia to kick in. I woke from surgery it seems only minutes after and remember being in a lot of pain. That kept me in the recovery room longer than normal. It only felt like half an hour to me but I'm told I was there closer to an hour and a half.
