  1. At almost 10 months out I feel myself feeling hunger again like I used to before surgery. Maybe in part too because I NEVER had one issue after surgery when it came to eating and drinking. I did both just fine with no gagging, no sick feeling, etc. I also knew when to stop and never pushed my limits. I just think now that I'm naturally able to eat more since I am this far out, the hunger feeling is like it was before when it comes to it being time to eat and whatnot. Having said that, I also notice that if I have a good meal full of lots of protein I tend to stay full and satisfied MUCH longer and sometimes don't even feel hungry come my next meal. This is especially true at breakfast. I'll eat an egg and two pieces of turkey sausage, or two eggs and one piece of turkey sausage and I sometimes am not even hungry come lunch. And most times I don't even fully finish that breakfast. So yeah, pay attention to protein.
  2. That's a hard one yes it reduces your hunger to start with, does it stop you thinking about food? no it doesn't I find I am thinking about food so much more. It has reduced a bit now 7 months out. But oh gee I remember thoughts of food and what to eat driving me crazy 🤪. In saying that though I always hard trouble deciding what I wanted to eat unless I craved something. You will feel "not hungry" faster after eating and I say not hungry because personally I haven't experienced that "oh my God I ate to much" full feeling since surgery. I have discovered that if I don't drink enough when I do eat I get an empty pit feeling my surgery buddy experienced the same but once I worked out it was thirst not hunger I sorted it out by having a small drink 10 minutes before eating. Everyone is different this has been my experiences. My best advice is to find something you can fully emerse yourself in that will take your mind off food it will help you in the early days.

    Milestones!

I am just beginning this process. I am required to do 4 months of dietary sessions with my primary. We have actually been doing this since I got on prednisone. I keep blowing up. 109 lbs in 11 mths with a 1000calorie or less diet. I have 2 lung diseases and RA so I will be on some dose of prednisone for the rest of my life. I am working on a taper down. I am hoping to get down to 5mg? I think 10 mg is going to be my magic number, unfortunately so my battle will be forever but getting all this weight off now is going to be a good thing. I am at a point where I can barely walk anywhere without my O2 dropping down in the low 80s. I am on oxygen 24/7. My risk of a cardiac event is alarming. This is the main reason why my dr wanted me to have the sleeve surgery. I want to get rid of the type 1 diabetes that prednisone threw me into after my SECOND dose! I have already started a scheduled meal day and cut my portions down to child size(I 1use a kids plate and utensils). I sub one meal with a protein shake. I will graduate to 2 shakes closer to surgery pre-op. I am really concerned about my support system. My husband already does most of the housework. I cook when I feel up to it. Maybe 3-4 times a week. However, he works nights so that he can take me to dr appts. Well, he sleeps ALL DAY LONG. From 9ish until 7 pm at night. He says he can't function without 10 full hours of sleep. On his days off, he sleeps all day and most of the night. He says he has to catch up. He is exhausted and sore. I don't know if I can manage by myself post-op. My son lives in the same town but he has work and such, I am sure he would come to help for a few days. My daughter lives in Florida. She has 3 kids. When I asked if she would come for the surgery since I am high-risk with my lungs, she said that my youngest 2 grandchildren's birthdays are near the time I will be scheduled. Could I plan it some other time? I was devastated that she said that. My Pulmonologist said I have over a 65% chance of not waking up(my risk of a cardiac event if I don't have surgery, is 100%). So, I am not sure how much help I am going to need after surgery. I know everyone is different but, can I do things on my own? I even have 4 dogs to take out all day. One on a leash. Please tell me I will be ok?

    Recovery time

I think the time you need is really unpredictable. I had decided to take 6 weeks off so I could get through the liquid and puree stages on a normal eating schedule as I do shift work and 12 hours shifts as well. But I ended up taking nearly 10 weeks as mentally the surgery knocked me around but going back to work gave me some of my old routine back and helped me get out of my funk but I certainly wasn't expecting what I went through to happen. We have also seen people post about being back at work going to the gym etc after a week 😳 I don't know that exercise other than walking is a good idea so soon after surgery but anyway I think 2 weeks depending on how physically demanding your job is. Is about average.

    Two weeks out

Today is two weeks past surgery. Recovery has gone well with no complications. My surgery was a revision from sleeve to bypass for hernia and GERD issues. I've dropped 10+ lbs in the two weeks which seems right in line (I was only at 227 on date of surgery). Per my surgeon's plan today we could progress to soft solid proteins, so it was great to have an ounce or two of sliced deli meat for lunch. Only downside is that they do an internal stitch to hold things together and that pain is real. I'm told it'll go away 4-6 weeks following surgery but until then it's the only downside to an otherwise good recovery so far.

    PCOS and Weight Loss Surgery

Just answered someone else asking about PCOS and the surgery so I will just copy and paste what I wrote to them. I am just coming up on 10 months post op and have lost about 73lbs. I've dealt with PCOS, Endometriosis, Adenomyosis, Insulin Resistance, Migraines, etc. all my life. 10 years ago I was put on Metformin to help with those issues. Especially my PCOS, IR and it worked wonders for those things (and made my migraines disappear too). The Metformin kept me regular all those years, lessened my periods in days and volume, helped my cramps, etc. However, since getting the surgery I had my Metformin cut in half and I "think" I may be taken off of it all together eventually. But I have to say that since my dose was cut in half my periods have been heavier, come late/sporadically, stay super long (last one lasted 12 days), etc. REGARDLESS of the surgery. So, I don't know that surgery helped ME with those issues. But it has helped with my high BP and I am almost off of that medication too. I never dealt with acanthosis nigricans so I can't offer any info on that.

Google is your friend. Stacks of exercises to tone your glutes available with a simple search. It can also be helpful to get a short program at a gym or with a person trainer to find out the best workout for you & to ensure you’re doing them correctly & not risking potential injury. Then you can do them at home. Can be a little pricy but sometimes they offer deals. You can pick up weights, resistance bands etc. pretty cheaply. I got my bands for $10 at Kmart in Australia. Remember you won’t be able to do a lot for a few weeks while your healing & recovering from the surgery. Walking will be your friend for that first month or so.

    Fruit smoothie made with water

You can definitely count them towards your fluid goal - I like to have my spinach blended in, so many times I would have shaked with or without protein. I make them with half a cup of milk, half a cup of water and about 4 ice cubes along with some blueberries, spinach +/- protein powder. So I would input about 10 to 11 ounces of this blended smoothie towards my fluid goal and also input milk, blueberries, spinach and protein powder in my food log. When I am usually on a tight schedule and can't manage to have solid foods, doing so helps me meet my protein goals and even my fluid goal. And like someone pointed out, even my program has half and half when it comes to 64 ounces of fluid. At least half of it should come from plain or flavorer water and rest can come from other alternatives!
  12. One month out, dietician appointment, examined what I'm eating, said it's enough with the transition foods like cottage cheese, time to eat properly and "enjoy my life". Told me to try and piece of toast with ham which I'm not going to do. But to eat solid foods, chew more (which I haven't need to do because the foods were soft) and aim to eat in 10 minutes (previously 1 minute of soft food and I was full). Great success with dinner, below, which I finished.
  13. Taking my own advice - Hold myself accountable. Surgery 10/2020, HW somewhere in the 280's. Low weight 165 ... Current weight 175.... Why? Here's why... Last day tracked January 19th Last regular/daily tracking November 2021 Last day registered weighing - January (I still do weigh almost daily though) Eating/drinking (including alcohol) whatever I wanted, whenever I wanted - "Justified" it by telling myself "It's ok, I can't eat that much of whatever... and I'm drinking low calorie alcohol. All of this equals close to 10lb overall gain in a fairly short period of time. Failing to address it now will simply put me back where I started. If you've been at all successful in this journey, you know what works and what doesn't - Don't lie to yourself and pretend everything is fine and end up with a 20lb gain - Mentally 5 was my threshold and we see how that worked out. For me at least, I don't want to feel ashamed that I worked so hard only to fail in the long run. Today, back on track, I have no doubt that I will fall off the wagon again, but hey... it's a marathon, not a sprint. I WILL track food and drink - even if it's not something on my plan. I WON'T lie to myself. I'll set realistic/attainable goals. I WON'T do anything drastic (for me) like liquids only for x number of days - It isn't sustainable and results with me doing stupid things.

It is water weight, take 8oz of luke warm water, cut a fresh lemon into 8 wedges and squeeze one into the water. It works as a natural diuretic and will help push the water you retained. I retain water like the plague. I have easily gained 10 lbs from morning to night in just water and can wake up 10 lbs lighter the next day. The lemon water works like a pro-move for me and everyone I have ever told about it. Good luck, my pre-op diet starts in a few days and I know I will need all the luck I can get!

    Vitamins

I was told that even for people it is hard to break down and absorb the nutrients in gummy vitamins and even harder for bariatric patients. I don't prefer to take 10 pills a day, so I would use the bariatric ones for that reason alone. Plus if you have to double or triple the dosage, is it really any cheaper? Frankly, who knows what is accurate or not. Every bariatric team has different opinions and requirements. If you trust your team enough to guide you and preform surgery on you than trust your team enough to take the supplements that they recommend. At the end of the day, they blood work will tell you if whatever you choose to take is working or not anyway.

    Anyone in MINNESOTA?

Yeah I am trying to figure out that life balance. I have a 10 yr old and my roommate works during the day. I also have a multi level house so that may be interesting there too. I would guess stair is a no go or just too painful to do?

    February 2019 weight loss buds

Hello everyone! We are now at three years since surgery, and I wanted to see how you all are doing? I'm doing okay, but not great. I've gained about 20 pounds in the past year, and I'm not very happy about it. I could make excuses (lockdown, stress, etc.), but the reality is that I have nobody to blame but myself. It's so much easier to eat at this point, and I acknowledged that I have overindulged. I'm still at a reasonable weight, but I know that I have to be very careful so I don't creep up slowly from here. I would ideally like to lose 10-15 pounds, but I'm not going to beat myself up if I don't. I'm still much healthier and more active than I was before surgery. I hope everyone else is doing well!

    March 2022 surgery buddies

I'm not really having food funerals. Partly, I think, because I had a really bad infection in October from a cat bite that basically had me super sick from the industrial strength antibiotics they had me on. Completely lost my appetite, and although I can and am eating now, I'm just not feeling the need to binge. Though, I did get some dairy queen last night lol and I had a couple of drinks. Might have some carb heavy meals before starting my pre-op diet, but other than that, I'm more focused on my goals. After 21 years, 10 years of which I've been trying to get Dr's to understand the severity of the stomach issues I have, I know what this lifestyle looks like. I didn't gain back any of the weight from my original surgery, but I never got to goal weight either. I have about another 75-95 lbs to lose. I know this time around it's not going to come off as easily or quickly, but I'm ready to put in the work. Only thing that's a bummer is, the surgery is about 2 weeks before my 50th, so no birthday cake for me (unless it's a cake flavored protein drink lol).

    March 2022 Surgery Buddies

I have to do 10 days of 6 meals consisting of one protein shake and a half cup cooked non-starch veggies or a cup of raw non-starch veggies and a half a cup of fruit. I can also have broth, jello, popsicles, sugar-free drinks, water. I start that two weeks from yesterday. I went to Costco yesterday and purchased some Gatorade Protein drinks and some protein shakes. 😬 It's starting to feel real!

    January sleevers

I usually have between 600 and 700, maybe 800 calories if I eat some fruit. 380 calories are from 2 shakes and the yogurt. That ensures I'm getting plenty of protein and 1/3 of my liquids, then leaves 100-200 for each meal, which is plenty, and then I can have some fruit here and there. I forgot to mention earlier that last night I had 1/2 chicken taco and it was the best thing ever. 1/2 low carb tortilla = 25 cal, 2oz shredded chicken = 60 cal, 2 tbs of refried beans = 30 cal, a little taco sauce = 10 cal, and 1/4 bag of Quest Protein chips = 30 cal. What was nice about this meal was that it kept me feeling full for longer than other meals I had been eating and I just felt very satisfied. Almost "normal." 🙂

    Long term success

seven years out. I lost 235 lbs and put about 20 lbs back on during year 3 (which is pretty common - most of us experience a 10-20 lb rebound after hitting our lowest weight). there are no food restrictions once you get a few months out. Some people can't tolerate certain foods (I can't handle really fat-laden meals, for example), but nothing is off the table once you're out a ways. I can eat pork and other red meat with no problem. Edited to add that I almost never went off plan until I was a year out. I'm not really on any plan anymore other than I still eat the minimum grams of protein that I'm required to eat. I'm also cognizant of my calorie intake, but I'm not longer obsessive about it. If I eat too much one day, I just cut back a bit the next day. As long as it all evens out in the end and my weight is pretty stable, I don't worry about it.

Hi! April 19 vsg here! Very nervous about the 2 week pre op diet and managing that while returning to work after 2 years working at home. Wondering how long most of you are taking off from work after your procedure?

    Emotions on high post op?

Hey! I'm 2 weeks post op and I def feel this. I think there's a big hormonal change, like I didn't get my period this month either. I am in and out of a weird daze/depression and I miss feeling normal. I think it'll go away as we heal and our routines become more normal but I definitely feel like my emotions are off. I'm not even particularly happy. I've lost like 19 lbs post op and don't really care because I dont feel physically good. But, I just need to keep telling myself that this is a temporary state. At some point,, I believe it becomes normal again. What type of feelings/emotions are you experiencing? Sent from my SM-G975U using BariatricPal mobile app
  24. So I am 10 days post op and my nutritionist has moved me to puréed foods 2ozs. I had grilled chicken with mashed potatoes yesterday, which I didn’t even finish all of it. I am also allowed to have cooked veggies now. I have been tolerating the food well, but only Have one puréed meal a day, i might have cream of wheat for breakfast and then my puréed food for dinner. Is anyone else in puréed food yet?

    November Surgery Buddies!!!

So, we're in about the same boat. I'm down 83lbs in 3 months and 10 days. Still going in the right direction, even if slowing down. Hitting between 6500 and 9000 steps per day at this point ... that about an hour of walking daily after work. Mixing in band exercises while at the office and while walking. The diet is still fairly clean, especially during the work week.... though I did allow myself a piece of toast today. Only lost 1.8 lbs this week, but a loss is a loss. I had ...probably an unrealistic goal, to reach -100 by my March 17 doctor appointment. Looking like it will be closer to -90. Which of course is still fantastic! Wearing clothes that I haven't been able to wear in a while. Need to break down and buy a couple pairs of salvation army pants soon... as it is I have to wear shorts under my pants to keep them up! Lol. I'm thinking about starting some weight training soon. I know there are different camps on this idea but I want to counter some of the loose skin by building some tone. I'll likely see the scale slow even further but I need to realize that the redistribution of weight is there. Looking forward to the next -17!
