anybody know the protein smoothie recipie?
Bamablondie1 replied to Erin18's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I dunno about Issotone. I use Simply vanilla Syntax Matrix. My fav is a banana smoothie that is to die for! And I don't even like Nana's! 1/2 cup skim milk 1 banana 1 cup ice vanilla (ya know the imitation liquid stuff) a pack or two of artificial sweetener (i like sweet n' low) 1 scoop simply vanilla Protein mix. YUMMMMM Sometimes I also add 1/4 - 1/2 cup of (already mixed) crystal light's sunrise orange mixy drinky stuffy. Awesome! If you wanted to make it thicker consistency you could add plain yogurt or maybe some more fruit... blueberries... cherries... but even just the basic mix above is good. Check out the great food finds thread on here and let us know what recipes you find! -
Well my plan is to do the protein. I will also add some spinach or kale to it. I have to find a way to stick to this. The last time I tried, I let life take control. I know stress is no reason for bad eating, and I have used up all my excuse life lines. I have to loose some serious weight before I got to the excuses again. I am planning to get all my veggies and things, because its got to go down. I will probably have a very small meal for dinner, mostly fish or chicken, and greek yogurt before hitting the gym. I have to do some cardio. My weight has truly gotten out of control, and I need to focus to get back on track.

I lost over 80 lbs doing low gi, but then I kinda blew it when my dad's heart went out of sync and then he broke his hip and then he was in rehab and I was going back and forth for months and he almost died twice. I put all the weight back on and a little more. It works if you stick to it, but I dont think you can get the nuances from the south beach book is why I suggested also reading low gi diet books. For instance, potatoes are a no no, but if you really really crave one, boil a new red potato. Baked potatoes have more starch, only boiled and the newer and smaller the less starch, the lower the gi. Rice, pick a whole grain chewy rice and boil and boil and pour off water and keep boiling at least 20 minutes. If its a chewy type brown rice it will still be good. Instant rice is totally out. pasta, again, small small portions if at all, then the opposite is true, dont overcook, its gets more starchy and again whole grains only. Whole grain cereal no sugar, everything you can you need to switch to whole grains, and its a side dish not the main dish, like you dont have a whole plate of spagetti, its a side to your protein. One of the books breaks foods into red light, green light and yellow light foods, red always no, yellow are maybes, watch them and green you can have all you want. unsweetened yogurt or yogurt with artificial sweeterns is the lowest gi food on the charts. good for snacks or breakfast (except I hate it). the books on low gi to me helped me understand what I could eat a whole lot better than telling me to eat so much of which foods and a bunch of receipes.

Hi Ivy; Took this journey with many other SoCal sleevers and this is our hot topic of conversation at one year out. My disclaimer - none of us are too skinny and I mean that with BMI or health issues. None of us are non eaters - DUH or we would not have required VSG surgery. Your body will know when to stop, really. As Rootman said, you start to eat a little more too. There are about 6 of us in southern CA that support each other, each having different surgeons - all getting sleeved within two months of each other. One beauty has not hit weight loss goal at a year out (under 100 lbs to lose total) and still privately struggles since she has balanced out at "overweight" down from "obese". She would love to get down to a "normal" BMI range but her body resists. The rest of us are at or lower than we ever dreamed of getting in normal BMI range. Listen - we are all professional dieters on this site and know what NOT to eat to gain weight. Worry about hitting goal learning better healthy habits prior to surgery, practicing those tenants (eating healthy with proper calories, Protein, take supplements’ and Water) during weight loss phase and then worry about maintenance food still is a major part of my life, but my hunger no longer owns me. So, the glory of the sleeve is if you need calories, add healthy calories such as cheese, greek yogurt, extra slice of meat, a dab of guacamole or sour cream. YUM. Do not worry about anything other than hitting goal and learning new habits to create a new healthy you. I have no regrets, a mini miracle. Love my sleeve!

Anyone else experiencing this? I was able to drink milk 3 days out of surgery and had no problems, but over the past week I've been feeling a little odd and yesterday and today I did a bit of a test - sure enough, dairy seems to be the trigger to causing a bloated, gassy feeling. Which is an absolute pain in the neck, since cheese sticks have been such a handy on-the-go workaround and pre-op I included a lot of dairy in my meals. From what I read this sometimes goes away the further post-op you get, but right now is a real wrench in my protein intake plan. I can switch sources, it's just that lentils and chicken salad aren't anywhere near as conveniently portable as cheese and yogurt. Damn. Any suggestions for good, non-dairy protein that can travel? I've found some 2oz tubs of hummus, but could do with a little variety.

I am on day 9 of a 20 day preop diet consisting of protein shakes, cottage cheese, yogurt, broth, and SF jello and popsicles. I've lost 13 lbs which is great. I'm trying really hard not to complain because it could be worse and I could be on full liquids or only protein drinks, but...I'm on burnout. I'd kill for just a salad, a cucumber, something with substance and crunch! In November, I kicked a 15 year habit of smoking cold turkey. During that time I munched on baby pickles when I got a craving for one. When I traveled I ate sunflower seeds. I thought i was over it, but now that I can have very little I want a cigeratte, a big Dr Pepper, and the right side of the menu from the burger place down the street! (ok, i really want the whole menu) I don't know why today is so hard, but I've just stayed in bed and slept since yesterday afternoon. I'm fighting caffine, nicotine, and every food craving imaginable. Any suggestions? How did you make it through?

Premier chocolate is about the only pre-made one I can stand. I also make them at home with almond milk, yogurt, peanut powder, sugar free vanilla syrup and unflavored Protein powder. Those are pretty tasty, as far as Protein shakes go...

Sandy Related Trouble
jusstice replied to jusstice's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Well, they sent me home with the incision sites bandaged with a plastic film over them. These are still intact. Am I supposed to leave them until whenever I get to see the doctor, which was supposed to be this week? The sites don't bother me. I had aoh blood blister on one bandage edge. I get a pain if I bend over, on my left side in between two incision sites. If I don't bend I am good, so I try not to bend. Overall, not too bad. Foodwise, I had to advance myself to applesauce and yogurts because that was what was readily available. I could buy a Greek yogurt in the morning and eat most of the day from it. Hope that didn't mess anything up. Thanks. -

Thanks for your feedback! This restriction thing is NICE!! I have a yogurt at 5:30pm and its 10pm now and Im still not hungry. FINALLLYY!!!! Drinking water is scary...I get it down but it makes me burp and if I drink too big of a gulp, it hurts....sip sip sip -
Hi Yaya! Congrats on your surgery date! I managed the diet very well, actually. I only had to do it for one week, but it was still pretty easy. Make sure you drink about 3 protein shakes a day with no more than 15g of carbs and no more than 5g of fat, unless your doctor says otherwise. You can also have yogurt and soups. I recommend tomato soup and broth. Also, strained and watered down cream of chicken soup (make sure to not swallow any chicken bits). Are they requiring you to do clear liquids at any time?

Eating after exercise
JamieLogical replied to AussieSam's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
Definitely aim for high protein when eating after exercise. I too am usually able to eat a bit more post-workout than other times of day. That's why I always workout before dinner, since that tends to be my largest and highest protein "meal" of the day. It also might do you some good to eat a small amount of carbs BEFORE a workout. My afternoon snack is usually greek yogurt with a little granola or kashi cereal mixed in. That's the only time I eat any real carbs and I find it helps fuel me through my workout a little better. -
I have a bit of a different perspective than everyone else. My surgeon says everytime I see him, "Don't eat if you are not hungry." So I stick to that, pretty much. I am 6 1/2 weeks post op and still don't have any hunger pains yet. When I do eat, I stay away from carbs and only eat lean meats. I do this every couple of days to get protien. I only drink water, crystal light, and light vanilla soy milk, so my daily calorie intake is less than 200 on most days. If I am feeling tired I eat some Greek yogurt or cottage cheese and that helps tremendously. I also make sure to take my vitamins. I saw the doctor for my 2nd fill Wednesday (I'm now at 4 ccs) and told the nurse practitioner that I am only eating every couple days and she said, "That's fine, don't eat if you are not hungry". She asked me if I am having any problems with being over tired or lightheaded, and I'm not. She said as long as I am not having any lack of nutrition side effects then I am ok with my diet. I have noticed that most doctors do not follow this approach though, and give their patients a certain amount of calories to take in, but I thought I'd add my experience to give a different insight. Good luck and I hope yo find what works for you

Sugar/Dairy tolerance 14 yrs post
Lady Havok posted a topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I have no trouble eating yogurts, cheeses, most candies and fruits; drinking milk, sugar in coffee or tea. But; big but, I cannot eat ice cream, frozen yogurt, fruit smoothies, cake and chocolate in bar form. I know that some of these things are no-nos. But, in the off times that I eat them, I get very sick. I get sweaty, dizzy, have trouble concentrating and finishing sentences. I feeling nearly poisoned. What confuses me is that it is not consistent after 14 years. Does anyone else have similar issues?- 3 replies

I could only do refried beans at first. But my nut said if you use black beans and puree them like a hummus they were ok too at the stage that I could have yogurt, cottage cheese, etc...But no baked beans at that time. I think it had something to do with fiber.

Noobie Getting Sleeved in July
happyhippo replied to IndieGirl's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
hi i am 3 mos out and I still use shakes. I make protein shakes with fruit and greek yogurt and i make one each morning with just 1% milk and protein powder, In this manner I get 20g of my protein right off the bat. and I also mix my calcium supplement powder in this shake each day. But, I like shakes so it has not been an issue for me. I did use ALOT of pureed food for a change though. I thought it was amazing how good something like chili tasted pureed when it looked so ugly.lol. -
Hi guys, I'm now 8 days into my pre-op liver reduction diet. I eat an average of 5 low fat yogurts a day and 2litres of Water. I've LOST 25lb already in just 8 days. Is there anything wrong in losing too quickly? What has everyone else's losses been like on the pre op diet? Sent from my iPad using the BariatricPal App

Why Am I Not Loosing With My Sleeve?
jh5497 posted a topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
So I was sleeved August 9, 2012. 4 weeks ago today. Before I went into surgery I was weighed at 218lbs. Now, 4 weeks post op, I weighed in at 211.8 this morning. 7.2lbs in 4 weeks with an extremely restricted diet. I'm disappointed in the results and have tried so many things to encourage myself (self talk, seeing slow losers board, reminders that it takes time, that its still a loss etc.), but I just feel like the reality has fallen short of my expectations for the sleeve. I had a stall around week 2 which was expected, but even considering that, I feel like my body isn't doing what it is supposed to. So here's the details and suggestions are welcomed: I walk for exercise -- about 20-30 minutes/day, plus chores like mowing grass where I work up a sweat. Sunday is my one month and I plan to start doing more like swimming and beginner work out dvds (biggest loser ones). What I eat: Breakfast is a 100cal EAS Carb Control Protein shake (17g Protein), lunch is usually Soup or left over supper or super steamed veggies from the cafeteria (I work at a hospital) Supper is chicken mushed with dressing/spices (about 2 oz solid food right now)) or Ground Turkey recipes. Snacks (2/day usually, sometimes 1 depending on Fluid intake) cheese, greek yogurt, protein pudding (80 cals, 15g protein). Fluids: I drink 1 Water bottle while at work (it's just shy of 1L), I have for sure one 500ml glass of herbal caffeine free tea in the evening, usually 2, but sometimes I switch this up with ProtiDiet hot chocolate (80 cals, 15g protein) in 500ml water instead of more tea ior a chai tea latte (80cal, 4 carbs, 5g protein). I feel like I'm doing everything right but the results aren't telling me that! Any help would be appreciated!! -

Overwhelmed with food choices
heidikat72 replied to KittyCathy22's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
check out the blog "the world according to eggface" - tons of easy great food ideas! other suggestions: yogurt, tuna or salmon packets (both come in a variety of flavors, high in protein, low calorie and don't need refrigeration so easy to take on the go). maybe try to plan out a few days in advance at a time so you don't feel overwhelmed in the moment of trying to figure out what to eat right then. -
Just Banded 2/26
heididormanen replied to Victoryg's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I had the same problem...I added a small amount of out meal...about 1/4 cup and also added a non fat Greek yogurt to my protein shakes and started to feel much better....I was so hungry that the acid in my stomach was making me nauseous...I had a head ache from grinding my teeth and you can just imagine the mood I was in. I knew I needed to do something...just work slow, chew often and give it a go...I had oatmeal 6days after surgery...I had too -
Cereal.....I try to eat it, because of the fiber! But I can only eat a small amount---maybe 1/2 cup cereal max. I eat Honey Bunches of Oats, 1 shredded wheat biscuit, Grapenuts, Cheerios....I usually use a packet of Sweet & Low, and 2% milk. Other mornings I eat yogurt, and I toss about 1/4 of a cup of granola in my yogurt. I will also use the bite size shredded wheat as a snack, if I am feeling a need to munch, because I can always use the Fiber, to keep things regular....if ya get my drift!!! I can eat hot cereals---small amounts again. One envelope of instant oatmeal is way more than enough....I usually don't finish it all. So about the same amount of Cream of Wheat does it for me. The hot cereals don't stay with me for some reason like the cold does, if I eat hot cereal, I am not full for a long time. Not sure if it is the warmth and the mushie together, allows it to pass quickly or what. Eggs---I can eat them most ways if I am careful. I used to have a hard time with them scrambled, but not anymore. It seems they go easier if I have some thing scrambled in with them---like a bit of meat---ham, sausage---or maybe some onion and peppers, and a bit of cheese, make it more omelet like. The additional food seems to make it break down easier and I am able to chew it to a better consistency before swallowing it. Hard boiled might be too dry--I don't know....I don't like them so have not tried them! Breakfast is harder for me. I am tighter in the AM. I try to get something eaten though, as I have heard to need to in order to get your metabolism woke up so to speak. I am no expert, so I don't know----just going by what works!!! Kat

I was sleeved on 1/26. I went for a follow up yesterday, and I've lost 15 pounds!! I am extremely happy with the results so far. I was taken off my high blood pressure medicine AND my acid reflux medicine! Very, very awesome things have happened... I was the fifth person in my family to have WLS. All of them had Gastric Bypass, but I had VSG because of my tendency to make kidney stones. My uncle was my surgeon, so I went into surgery not afraid at all. Everything went great- no sickness in the hospital, incisions are looking amazing, support from my family and friends is plentiful... So excited. I am going back to the gym tomorrow. I guess i'll just start with some walking on the treadmill. I will go back to work on Friday... so excited to see my clients I have managed to keep up with my classes, as I am a full time student. Everything is just going so great for me. I am having problems with my Protein intake. The only Protein shake i've found that I can tolerate is the Atkins shakes- more specifically, the Espresso kind! By the way, I don't see how the flavorless Protein powder is flavorless!! I am doing Oikos yogurt, scrambled eggs, the occasional shake, though it's hard to get down, and whatever else protein I can scrounge up. My surgeon also told me I need to drink more liquids, but I feel like I drink constantly! I guess it'll get easier day by day? I'm only 19 years old, by the way. I am hoping to find more people my age around these forums because I feel kind of alone in that sense. I do love everyone, though And just outta curiousity... does anyone else feel like they eat ALL the time? I feel like i'm doing wrong by eating so often, but I guess the portion size is the cause of that?
-
I was told not to have rice, but the others were OK for me. Remember Protein is the key. If you stock up on protein you will feel better and not be as hungry. Check with your Dr. They should have a list for you to refer to. I went and got Egg flour Soup, hot and sour soup and put it in the blender- yummy. Cottage cheese, yogurt, soft poached eggs(again...protein) are good things too. Steam carrots put in blender with a little chicken broth, blend any chunky soup... believe me...I am into week 2 and I am getting creative! The blender is my buddy! Good luck! Jill
