  1. Some of my soft-food favorites have been: deviled eggs vegetarian cupcake-tray lasagna Trader Joe's boxed creamy tomato soup (also my favorite of the puree stage) carrot lentil soup with extra protein added 10-minute steamed eggs (for easy shell removal and a little bit of translucence at the center)-- for breakfast with just a bit of sugar-free syrup (+Boca morning sausage), or for lunch/dinner broken up into soup
  2. It seems like more and more new users forget to use the sidebar with surgery info and progress. While it's obviously anyone's choice to keep the information private, it makes it so much easier to help with questions when you have an idea of where people are in their journey. I'm wondering if it's simply because more users are mobile-only? Maybe they don't see the sidebars (I use BP on desktop only)? Maybe they don't even know it's there? It's especially helpful when someone asks about nutrition, complications, phase-specific worries and stalls to understand right off the bat where they are in their journey. There's a world of difference between stalls happening for a BMI52 duodenal switch patient who had surgery 7 weeks ago and lost 10 lbs total and then a sleever who's a year out at BMI24. It's getting harder and harder to tell as fewer and fewer new users use the sidebar. Maybe we the site could help nudge people to fill in the info?
  3. bahahahahaahaahahaha!!! Having just visited the US, I may or may not have had 10 large CfA diet lemonades with the grilled nuggets. Man, that's a satisfying lunch. Edit: not 10 in one sitting. Promise.
  4. You’re a trooper! 19 days pre-op would have done me in. But yes, the gagging is real. I am probably going to try the homemade route.
  5. Mine was 3 shakes a day for 10 days before. Then my surgery was delayed so it turned into 19 days. Then it was meant to be 2 shakes a day for ten days after surgery. Which I couldn't do. I literally began to gag on them. The reality is, you don't need to have the shakes if: you make something to drink that's just as thin and smooth and preferably with protein (although the short term protein requirements are overblown, a week with sub-optimal protein does nothing and no you don't lose muscle either). So you could blend Greek yoghurt with water, protein powder and skinless cooked pears for example. Just make sure it's as thin and smooth as a shake and you'll be fine.

    Tropical Smoothie Cafe.

Here is the Tropical Smoothie Cafe nutritional info charts - https://d38zwb0vf9f6v5.cloudfront.net/wp-content/uploads/2022/01/19172332/Menu-Optimization-2021-Promo-1-2022-Sports.pdf For me, I think even the Kids smoothie option has too many carbs, but YMMV. Some of the sandwiches look doable, I'd probably split it in half and have both lunch and dinner.

    Ideal vs Best body weight

I agree with almost everything he says. First of all, I was told by my clinic that only about 10-15% of people make it to a normal BMI - most end up "overweight' or "class I obese" (which is not very obese - we're talking about 20 or 30 lbs overweight). The research I did after I was told that seemed to back that up. My third and final goal was to make it to a normal BMI, and I was actively discouraged from doing that - but I actually did make it -and stayed there for quite a while (I'm now about 6 lbs overweight at almost seven years out). I was told - like he said - that someone who's formerly obese has heavier bones and muscles than a person of the same weight who's never been obese, because we needed that extra "infrastructure" to hold up our weight. Granted, you do lose a lot of that as you lose fat - but you don't lose all of it - so we can weigh 10 or 15 lbs more than a never-been-obese person who's the same height and build and look pretty much the same as they do. and as far as getting too thin - I got down to 138 at my lowest - I looked pretty ghastly at that weight, even though that is around the middle of a normal BMI for me. I could practically see every bone in my body. I look and feel much better in the 150s. the only thing he said that didn't apply in my situation is that you lose about half of what you'd be expected to lose by a year out by the time you were three months out (in other words, if you lost 50 lbs in the first three months, you'd be expected to lose twice that (100 lbs) by a year out. I'd only lost about 40 lbs by three months out - and I was down about 120 lbs by one year out. So I think that can vary a bit.. otherwise, I do agree with pretty much everything he said - and my experience reflects most of it.

    1st fill and blah

Hello everyone I am a post op for lap band on Jan 20 of this year liquid diet 2 weeks then I was getting hungry more often and my portions were bigger I lost 19 lbs so far but I haven't lost anymore and haven't gained I had my first fill yesterday my doctor filled it up to 5cc then told me to drink water as I felt alot of pressure drinking it he kept taking some saline out till about 2.5cc I was ok. Now I could drink water like nothing I don't feel much restriction I am starving and could eat a horse however my Dr told me to go back to a liquid diet for 1 to 2 weeks? Uhhhhh like the eff? How long do I have to wait for yet another fill? Is there a certain time frame? I don't have any motivation so yet another clear stupid liquid diet for 2 weeks I've lost more hair then weight 😂 I need some advice oh and I've read many times the fills don't go in affect for couple of days? I'm confused

1st fill and confused and disappointed

Lap Band's come in two sizes, 10 ml and 14 ml. So depending on which size band you have, 2.5 cc won't do much as far as restriction goes. And as far as after a fill, my surgeon only required 2 days of liquids after a fill. And I agree with Catwoman, Lap Bands are outdated due to all of the problems they cause people. So I'm confused to why surgeons are still placing them. Nonetheless, I wish you well. My Lap Band journey was a hell of a ride. Best wishes!

    Low BMI pre op question

My BMI was 35 on the dot. But what BMI doesn't tell you is trend. In the last two years it had gone from 30, and in two years time it would have been at 40. A lifetime of somewhat successful weight loss and control had ended and I found I was simply unable to do it anymore. For whatever reason - I still couldn't tell you but I kept starting diets and periods of control that lasted 4 days at the most. My BMI has dropped under 30 now, 5 weeks post op. I'd also say two further things: 1. There's little in life more unhealthy than obesity. 2. The surgery is, on average, hugely less serious if you have a lower BMI, are younger and in better health/no comorbidities. That's me basically and I recovered very well with no issues at all, no food intolerances or anything. Wait 10 years, wait until your BMI is 10 points higher and you have diabetes, sleep apnea and hypertension and WLS is no longer a joke.

    Food Woes

I agree about the protein bars. I've never heard of these. I don't consume any protein bars, so I'm unfamiliar with them. There's a "10:1 ratio rule" and it is a guide to use to determine if the calorie to protein ratio is bariatric friendly. For every 1 gram of protein, you should have no more than 10 calories. So in the almond butter Perfect Bar there's 320 calories, but only 13 grams of protein. For a food that has 13 grams of protein per serving, to be bariatric friendly it should have no more than 130 calories per serving. Sent from my SM-G991U1 using BariatricPal mobile app

    Food Before and After Photos

I went to a restaurant today with my family. They ordered a delicious pizza and this was my take from it lol I'm 19 days post op. In pureed and can have some well cooked vegetables. A little red pepper, smoked cauliflower, and a little piece of feta cheese. Delicious, got a little bit of the taste in my mouth and perfectly happy! 15. Hey there! I'm about 19 days post op and my doc ordered blood work because I've been really weak and dizzy when. My blood count (except for white blood) is low indicating anemia or an internal bleed. Wondering if anyone had Low blood count post op, what you did and does it get better? Thanks Sent from my SM-G975U using BariatricPal mobile app
  16. I am 3 months out and have 3 small meals and 2 snacks. Breakfast - 75 gms low fat Greek yogurt and some berries or passion fruit Lunch - 1/2 cup soup or meat stew Snack - 25 gms ham or some deli meat rolled with cheese or cream cheese Dinner - 50 gms fish or seafood in a homemade sauce Snack - melba toast or thin cracker with pate or blue cheese or 20 gms cashew nuts I drink milky coffees and am mostly getting up to 60 gms of protein. It took me about 10 weeks to get to this goal. { I also detest protein drinks. } I am overestimating my calories because I don't usually manage to eat all my food. I estimate it to be 600 - 800 a day. Hope this helps
  17. I am 4 weeks PO now, but feeling very worried, since last week I started taking vitamins, it may be a coincidence or not but the scale is broken, it was very nice to see one pound or half of one gone every day but for the last 8 -10 days the scale does not want to move, I even gain one or 2 pounds, it is driving me nuts!. I finally can take the 64 oz of water, I am eating 2 ounces of food 3 times a day and my snacks are liquids or 2 oz of yogurt. I am walking 60 minutes in the treadmill every other day. I am making the 60gr protein per day even taking those horrible tasting protein drinks. What does the scale want from me?!

    May Surgeries - check in!

Checking in--happy 10 months to us! I'm down 113 pounds. My goal is to get down to 200, which is another 40 or so pounds. I've started feeling nervous lately because I can definitely eat more as of these last couple of months, but I know it's normal. Trying to move more (I HATE exercising) in small ways, and not slip into old habits with takeout, etc. How are you all doing?
  19. I tried every diet I could for more than 10 years before I did the surgery route. It would take me an entire year prior to surgery to lose 20-30 pounds and if I went off track I would gain back what a lost with interest within a very short period of time. It was ridiculous and disheartening. Surgery has been the only thing that has helped me take the weight off and keep it off. It's not impossible to do it without surgery, it's just unlikely. My mom was one of the rare ones who was able to lose a significant amount of weight on her own and keep it off because due to all her allergies she can't have WLS (she's allergic to vitamin supplements. seriously, they give her hives). My mom was over 400 pounds and at her lowest weight she got down to 180 on her own. She's maintained in the 230's for the last 20+ years. I tried the diet route, but my weight would barely budge and then I'd get upset and go off track and gain what I lost and extra and so at my heaviest I was 392 pounds. I took the WLS route when my niece was born in 2019 and it hit me that if I didn't DO something that I wouldn't be around to watch her grow up. Now my weight bounces around 175-185 and I just lose and gain back the same 10-11 pounds since I hit maintenance back in September. I'm much happier now and wish I had just done this for myself years sooner.

    Still pain at incision site

What they dont tell you about surgery: day 7-10 is when your nerves start regenerating and those are often the most psinful days. That's why they prescribe you the soluble pain killers. After day 12 you won't feel anything Sent from my SM-G973F using BariatricPal mobile app
  21. I thought this exact thought for literally decades (I'm in my 60s). I can't even tell you how many times I lost weight - sometimes as much as 50 or 60 lbs - just to gain it all back again a few months later. And I had over 200 lbs to lose. How on earth was I ever going to lose 200 lbs if I couldn't even keep 50 lbs off? Yet I'd try again...and again...and again. And yes - that 3-5% figure you heard is what I've read as well. Without surgical intervention, supposedly only about 3-5% of people can lose a lot of weight - and keep it off (although honestly, I'm surprised it's that high). Unfortunately, I wasn't one of the 3-5%. It took me 40 years to come to that conclusion. yes - you absolutely can regain all of your weight after having weight loss surgery. But your odds of losing a ton of weight and keeping it off are MUCH better than they are without surgery. I never, ever, in a million years could have lost those 200 lbs without surgery. And I wouldn't be sitting here almost seven years later, still managing to keep almost all of it off (like many of us, I did have a rebound during year 3. Most people seem to regain 10-20 lbs after hitting their lowest weight). This surgery has honestly been a miracle for me. It's not that I didn't have to work at it - I did - hard - but I never could have done this without surgery.
  22. My last thought before surgery was the two women I have met who had surgery and kept the 200 lbs off 10+ years. All those years at WW and I never met people who lost and maintained a 200lb weight loss the “natural way.” Even the “before” pictures at the gym didn’t compare to the amount I need(ed) to loose and keep off.

Good luck! 4/19 surgery here. I love your username 😂
  24. Hey. I'm about 16 days post op from gastric bypass so I have yet to know how this will turn out long term but to be honest, with this post op stomach, my hopes are high. Someone made a good point in the thread, with the surgery, you don't feel like your body is conspiring against you while trying to lose weight. The pre op diet was so hard because of my actual old anatomy and physiology. Now post op, I first off haven't felt real hunger since my surgery and when I do eat, I can actually hear myself and my body. It tells me when to stop or take a break. Obviously we have the ability to gain weight back but you have to also have faith and discipline, like everyone says it's just a tool. Mental health counseling has really helped me understand why I binged so much in the past. I don't think I'd be where am I today without my psychologist and psychiatrist. I had a lot of moments in my life where I thought I can just do it on my own, but every single time I was still binging when I was having off days. I lost about 70 lbs naturally in the past and then gained 100 lbs back because I never worked on the important part, listening to my body and finding healthy coping mechanisms. The rest of the time was spent miserably losing 10-15 lbs at a time on unstable crash routines. When I reached my highest weight and injured my knee, I knew I needed medical help. I saw a psychiatrist who was able to diagnose me and get me medicated then did 8 intensive months of counseling with a psychologist on my eating behaviors in order to prepare for surgery. I only lost 25 lbs before my pre op diet (that was a 8 month time span) and that didn't matter because the weight comes off post op. I'm now down 45 lbs total and have about 70lbs more to go until I'm in my ideal range. As long as you feel ready, you've followed your surgeon's orders, and you understand the commitment that this takes then do it. It's seriously an amazing tool and a privilege to be on the journey. I wish you luck with it and sending love to you and your husband on your journey. Sent from my SM-G975U using BariatricPal mobile app

    March 2022 Surgery Buddies

My surgery was long but went well. I'm not in a ton of pain thanks to scheduled pain meds, I only took one oxycodone. My leak test this morning showed the barium was still in my esophagus more than 10 minutes after I drank it. I got a dose of steroids to get rid of the swelling. I'm not surprised because I had the same thing happened with my sleeve. It looks like I'll be spending another day here Sent from my Z6201V using BariatricPal mobile app
