    March 2022 Surgery Buddies

My surgery was on the 1st. I returned to work (part time light janitorial) this past Monday and feel great! The complication I had ended up being just a small bump in the road to recovery. I've lost about 10 pounds so far. In a few days I get to start soft foods that have more texture to them, so stuff like a soft taco with ground beef and cheese. I'll be on that phase for 6 weeks. Gotta chime in to debunk the "it's hard to get protein when vegan" nonsense too! Total rubbish. Seitan is super high in protein, and the best and tastiest I've found is in Asian supermarkets. I use a faux bbq pork or faux roast duck seitan, both of which give 19 to 20 grams of protein per 100g. 6 months out, I can easily eat at least 100g with some greens per meal. My vegan protein water is 28g of protein per serve. Even without this, I can get 60g+ of protein a day through food. Protein fortified soy milk is 10g of protein per 250ml serve. If I have that in my protein powder, it's a whopping 40g of protein in one hit. I don't like protein shakes, so I make a matcha latte with the soy milk and get that 10g in. Without even trying, I get a daily 70 to 80 grams of protein in. Easy peasy.

    Any Regrets?

The study of 40% of women having acid reflux after came out in 2022. (Google with "2022" and you'll find the cohort study). My surgeon was at the forefront of this surgery, and taught others how to do it...he wasn't a newbee - I chose the best - lol. A male friend of mine had it with him 18 years ago had no problems. Another male friend of mine who had it with him 10 years later is on the PPI train - go figure. From what I see - nothing has really changed except they now "fix" the hernia you didn't know you had. This "fix" has a high failure rate - but probably buys the surgeon time. You won't have problems until a year or 2 down the line, and now you're someone else problem. I'd really look into the mini sleeve. It leaves a lot more of the stomach, and the fundus...which in theory will prevent your new tube stomach from sliding up into your esophagus. They're doing it in Europe and Mexico with some success. Ask your surgeon if he'll consider it. Maybe a larger Bougie - done by some surgeons - not others. If your doctor does a "one size fits all" bougie selection - find someone else. Plus - if you do have GERD, you'll need the some fundus for GERD surgery - which you won't have with the traditional sleeve. https://mexicobariatriccenter.com/services-list/mini-sleeve/ best of luck! PS - you are brilliant for asking these questions.

    Any Regrets?

First of all it's, "You're" 🤦‍♀️ You just can't comprehend the English written word. The sleeve surgery isn't personal to me. I was simply voicing that GERD is real and more severe than typical GERD a non-wls patient might experience. But you take this soooo personal. And I don't need help with anything. I've been a part of Bariatric Pal and a wls patient for nearly 10 years and have a lot of knowledge from reading over the years and nearly 10 years of personal experience. You're a few months into the journey and have a lot more to learn. Moving on! Moving on...
  5. My original RNY was done in December 2000, and it was very successful, I lost 12 stone and life was good! I started to regain around 10 years post op nothing too drastic, but I had awful GERD and I was still vomiting sometimes which I thought was odd. Anyway fast forward to 2022 and I went to see about a revision, turns out after a gastroscopy I had a rare complication called candy cane syndrome and a fistula from the pouch to the old stomach! I went in for what should have been keyhole to end up having a full open operation as the surgeon could not find where one of the limbs from my previous surgery was connected to and my intestines were twisted (apparently called an intestinal hernias). Great it was not! I am now almost 5 weeks tomorrow post operation and getting back on my feet. I have been surprised at the weight loss 24lbs currently, which I guess will slow down as I only have 70lbs to loose now. I am also really shocked at the level of aftercare you get now! I'm at the soft food stage, and yesterday I found out I cannot eat fish pie yet! Two hours of pain then eventually throwing it all up. I had truly forgotten how horrible that is, my chest hurt and my throat was still sore this morning. Hoping it is not too soon after the surgery to be ill after eating, but pleased it's done and I can move on with it now.

    Where’s the weight loss??

P.S. wanted to add that after the first month, this IS a lot like Weight Watchers. Unless you're the size of someone on "My 600 lb Life", you're not going to drop 30 or 40 lbs a month (or whatever). People typically have a big drop the first month, because that's mostly water weight - and then you'll settle in to about 10 lbs a month, give or take, for several months - and then, as you approach your goal, it will really slow down. the difference this time is that you have a tool that makes your efforts pay off. It actually works as long as you stick to your plan. The most I could ever lose before surgery was about 50 lbs - and then it would gradually come back on. No way I could have EVER lost the 200+ lbs I did - and keep most of it off (I did have a 20 lb rebound after hitting bottom - which is very common). The surgery was the only thing that made that possible.
  7. Ugh. Today marks two weeks since my RNY. First week I lost 10 lbs. This past week I lost 1.5 lbs. I don’t understand how this is even mathematically possible when I’m eating no more than 600 cal/day on average (no issues getting fluids in, no constipation, eating mushy foods now and getting most of my protein in). The logical side of my brain knows this is a process, but the emotional part that misses McDonald’s fries is feeling like this tastes a lot like Weight Watchers 🙄

    Feeling kind of devastated…

I am 4 weeks today from my breast reduction and panniculectomy surgery after a 105 weight loss and maintenance for more than a year. coming up on 62 y/o. Surgeon removed 6+ lbs. I was a DDD and told my surgeon I wanted to go as small as possible without increasing any risk. He thought a large B or small C. My focus was on my quality of life 5-10-15-20 yrs from now. I could feel the difference in my neck and back within just a few days. I have not shared w many that I was doing this. vast majority don't know what I had to do to manage the excess skin and boobs. don't expect most to really even notice. but if they do, they do. what is important is how I feel and I feel great! I am grateful for each step of this journey and thankful for the improved quality of life it has given me.

    January 2022 Surgery Buddies

Stalls are normal I had one at 3 weeks post op for about a week. Another lady I know at 4 or 5 weeks had a 3 week stall despite getting in her water, protein and exercising. Don’t get discouraged it is part of the journey. When I would have stalls before the surgery when trying to diet I would change my eating for one day. Example if I was doing no carbs and after 2 weeks stalled then I would increase my carbs just for the day and it seemed to help. Now since I had the surgery when I had the stall I just kept the course and weight started coming back off. I had sleeve feb 7th and I am 37lbs down 10 from pre-op liquid and the rest after surgery a little slow to me but I have had some issues and have been unable to tske in protein up until recently. I am now able to drink protein water so hopefully my energy and activity will begin to increase for increased weight loss.

    November Surgery Buddies!!!

I also notice this, and it was also last week when I was away from home. I think it's because I wasn't doing protein first. I ate half a tuna melt sandwich all but two bites and panicked that my restriction had disappeared overnight. Of course it hadn't - turns out carbs first is not the right way. Now I'm back at home I'm feeling the restriction again - just the same as before. I will need to plan better next time I'm away from home. I'm almost 5 stones down on my highest weight. I feel amazing. I have always yo-yo'd so I have ALL the sizes of clothing to go back through on the way down. Once I reach a steady weight I'll invest in some new stuff, especially for work. Turns out 10 year old work clothes look like they were in fashion 10 years ago. 🤣

    March 2022 Surgery Buddies

Oh yeah, stress is what kicked this whole debacle off. And grief. I was 170lbs. in 2019. I had 5 major life events in a short span of time (3 months) and then I lost my baby 25weeks later . Devastation. always will be. But I don't have to stop living anymore. I maintained 165-175lb average from with fitness and healthy foods. 11 years in the USAF. I started spiraling after being seated directly across from abuser at a family wedding. The wedding coincided with the high stress life events. and it set off my eating.

    Regret and Depression

You had surgery 10 days ago? It's not uncommon to have 2nd thoughts right after surgery. When you combine post-surgical pain, the shock of the change in diet, possible post-surgical depression, and a lot of other factors, it can take a while to feel "normal" again. Don't assume you'll always feel the way you do now - take it a day at a time. Week three was when I turned the corner. Best wishes!

    Crazy brain

I was 10-ish years smoke free and around 9 months post op (back in 2019), i had a damn cigarette on vacation. Been quitting and un-quitting ever since. Ugh. Currently in “un-quit” mode. Dream as much as u want, if need be, but dont even start if u can help it! Its easier to brush off a dream than the nicotine in your system.

6 Months Post Op (Before & After 📸)

🗣🗣Thank you soooo much for these pics! 👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽 Absolutely amazing. Congratulations on all that chile lol This gives me so much hope for the sacrifice I made. Im 10 days post op from VSG. Only 7 lbs down so far but I’m not really focused on the scale just healing. Did exercise also play a big role in your inches lost? For me I’m not one of those big losers just based on diet alone lol But I’m so interested in your story please keep us updated!

    Excess skin after WLS

Ok: obligatory response to the oft-asked question/concern about excess skin: Basically what @Arabesque said above and that you will know how weight loss affects u when u know. There is no real way to guarantee no excess skin other than NOT losing weight…and im sure thats not an option, right? With that said, here was my experience I started off at 235 with a BMI of 43…yep im short. (223 on surgery day). I was healthy/normal sized until about age 30, at which point i steadily gained weight until i got to morbid obesity by the time i got into my 40s. I had surgery when I was 47. I lost my weight relatively quickly, getting down to 127 in 7 months. I lost a few more lbs over the next couple months as settled into maintenance. Ive hovered around 115 (give or take 5 lbs) ever since. This morning i was 118.8 And yep, I had excess skin. But it was literally just that…skin. I had very little fat tissue underneath so I didn’t look so much rolly, than it did crepey/lumpy …it looked crumply-bedsheet-looking. I did get the skin removed when i was 14 months post op via tummy tuck, arm lift and breast lift. As i had very little actual fat, the total weight removed from my body was a measly 400g. To those around me not really paying attention (which was probably almost everyone) the difference before and after PS was not very dramatic, if they noticed anything at all. It just looked like i toned up a little. I felt awesome in a bikini after plastics. But honestly, i felt awesome in that same bikini BEFORE plastics. But don’t get me wrong, i am super pleased i got it done and would do it all again 10 times out of 10. You may find you are quite happy/satisfied with your body after weight loss excess skin or not. Or you can go the plastics route. I’ve seen plastics results on here that are jaw dropping. But thats still a ways down the road for you. Your time and energies are probably better expensed on getting the weight off and changing and adapting to a new lifestyle. Good Luck! ❤️ P.S. For a visual, here is my progress pic covering the first 3 years (im 3.5 post today). You can see the skin situation with and without clothes on the top two rows. The bottom row is after PS.
  20. How does your husband know? Has he had a bariatric procedure in the past? If no, why would you even listen to him instead of your body? And if yes, well his experience doesn't necessarily have to be same as yours. You're only about 10 days post-Op. Because it's just the beginning, you won't have clues of fullness, at least I didn't. During this phase I was on full fluids. Fluids glide through, so I never had much of the restriction then. With full fluids, I was having yogurt, cottage cheese, soups, milk, oatmeal/wheat bran etc etc etc. These wouldn't give you much restriction and you would definitely be able to have many spoon fulls of these items. Also 1st month, your body is recovering along with nerves, so another reason why you may not get the full signal. Go with your provided instructions and you'll be fine than taking on extra baggage of worry. With water, I was also only about to do few sips at a time or 2 gulps. Other than that it wouldn't slide through as it did pre surgery. For protein requirement, try protein shakes or powder. If they don't work, go for Skyr (ice landic yogurt). Skyr has done wonders for my protein goal.

    Wendy’s salads

Okay I just tried it for lunch based on your recommendation and I agree. I usually don’t even like vinigarette dressings but I loved it and of course the little candied pecans are delicious too. I am interested to know how they figure it has 39 grams of protein though cause it didn’t seem like alot of chicken. I know nuts have protein too but still. I question that it was that much protein. I think I may take it home and weigh it next time out of curiosity. Maybe it’s cause it’s cut in cubes instead of strips it just doesn’t look like as much?? Or maybe because I ordered it without blue cheese and they made it in a hurry they put less chicken on? Ooh well either way it’s very good and only 10 minutes away from me so I’m sure I will be back. I’m thinking Parmesan Cesar next time. 👍. i just checked Walmart and Publix online and they don’t carry the dressing, Amazon does but you have to get three bottles. Idk why they do that.

    Dreaded hair loss - question

I've met my protein and fluid goals from the beginning and still experienced hair loss. No bald spots though and probably not even noticeable thinning to anyone else. It was mostly just in the shower/hair brushing I had a lot more fall out than I normally would so that's when I would notice it the most. Once dried and styled I don't think I really noticed it much. I'm about 10 months out now and I think I'm pretty much back to normal, and I have a fuzzy little halo of regrowth frizzing all over my head, so that's fun. I think it may depend on your hair type and a lot of different things. If you already have thin hair, it'll likely be more noticeable.

How many tacos one year out?

I wish I can weigh in in only 10 days post op But I did want to say I thought I was getting in more liquids post op than I should but now that I’m weighing everything I’m really not. Maybe weighting what you ate if you can eyeball it and recreate it to get a better idea of how much you actually ate? So nice knowing I might be able to eat tacos again! Lol

    Weight loss after surgery

I'm 3.5 months out and two inches taller than you, and I've been averaging -10 pounds a month. My 3-month checkup was last week, and my NP was very happy with my progress. As others have said, your starting weight will make a difference. Any loss is good loss; sometimes it'll be slow, sometimes it'll go faster. It's mostly about whatever your medical team says is healthy. I'm happy with my rate: I won't be able to avoid loose skin entirely, but I'm hoping to minimize it!
