  1. Hi all, In the past month I've fainted twice. Fainting is not new to me, used to faint due to dehydration Pre-op, so the first time I fainted (in Vegas, no alcohol) I thought it was due to dehydration so my NP ordered for me to get IV hydration. Today I fainted again (this time in a Verizon store), but didn't feel it coming like I usually do, and after fainting I've been more tired than normal and kind of nauseous. I called my surgeon's after hours number and my surgeon doesn't think it's hydration related because I'm further post-op than typical for dehydration to occur. He said just to rest, eat a snack, keep drinking water, and call the office tomorrow for an appointment and maybe some blood work. Has anyone else experienced something similar? If so what was determined as the cause? Thanks!
  2. Note... you say you are eating pretty much nothing but protein... realize that the dairy products, even if unsweetened, contain naturally occurring carbs in the form of lactose which is milk sugar. And the refried beans have carbs as well, though it's fiber. Even eggs contain carbs and fat. Not saying they aren't good things to eat, just making sure you and others who read this are aware. 1/2 C 2% cottage cheese- 14g protein, 4g milk sugar, 2.5 fat 1/2 c fat free cottage cheese -15g protein 5g carbs (my plan would prefer the fat to carbs) Greek yogurt--all six oz servings 2% plain - 20g protein, 4g fat, 8g carbs Fat free pain - 23 protein, 0 fat, 9g carbs Oikos triple zero 15g protein 14g carbs (almost equal!) Dannon light and fit 12g protein, 9g carbs (The sugar added are even more sugar of course) 1/2 Fat free refried beans- rosarita- 6g protein, 18 carb Bush's 9 protein, 24 carb Kroger 7 protein, 20 carb Egg 6g protein, 4g fat, 1g carb Why would you trust your surgical team to literally cut you open and then not follow their dietary advice? At least for a couple of months? Better yet, why not six months or a year? Alcohol, cigars, coffee will all be there in a few months. So will the gym. How do you know you can tolerate it? Usually when we feel guilty it's because we know we are doing something wrong, even though we may say we aren't. When we are truly not doing something wrong we don't feel guilty. But you asked a question. I followed my doctors rules to the letter for a year till I was at goal. I chose the surgeon I trusted so I trusted them to know way more than I did about weight loss surgery and how to make the best recovery and lose weight most efficiently and permanently. I still follow it most of the time and I'm four years out.
  3. Mine's October 16th in Boston. I'm halfway through my pre-op diet now. I'm not having as hard a time as I thought I would, but I can also eat. Only things I can't have are starches, caffeine (ok that one is hard), carbonated beverages (even harder than the caffeine), and alcohol.
  4. I still follow the diet guidelines completely, I still can't eat more than 1 egg at a meal or 4 oz of cottage cheese. The only place I really deviated was with the coffee yesterday morning and the occasional cigar (they don't want you to smoke whether you have had the surgery or not). They never said I couldn't have a drink from time to time they just told me I would feel the effects of the alcohol a lot quicker. The reason I was told to stay away from caffeine was because it slows down the healing process and after 4 weeks I thought I was pretty much healed. As far as going to the gym, I just can't sit still I want to get up and be doing things all the time. 2 days after surgery I resumed my 1 to 2 mile daily walks. I have always been very active and to sit around and do nothing for 6 weeks would kill me.

    Hobbies?

I cruise Pinterest for craft ideas. I love painting with alcohol ink on washers and make necklaces- just type in alcohol ink washer necklace and you'll see. It's so much fun and cheap. You can mix the colors like paint so you don't have to go crazy buying too many supplies. I'll post some pics when I pull them out for the craft fair next week. You have to seal them with acrylic seller though. Mich W Hw 223, SW 217 CW 179.8 GW 135

Jsemmig, No Alcohol. When I had my Psyche visit I asked the Dr what would disqualify a person from getting approved. He said if you were an alcoholic because you cant drink alcohol during your recovery period. My surgeon told me the same.

    Sugar alcohol

Also to clarify, for me personally I don't waste any calories on candies. The sugar alcohols I consume are in protein bars or things like that. I wouldn't waste 72 calories on four pieces of candy.

    Sugar alcohol

In Europe Net Carbs are the standard, but they are usually subtracting fiber. @Dabearo The bigger concern than the net carbs or sugar alcohol is how your body reacts to it. I can't handle sugar alcohol. It gives me terrible painful gas and makes me feel overall weird. Net carbs or not, those candies don't really seem worth it. Why not drink water with some flavored water drops instead.

    Alcohol!

Definitely a no no. The pre diet is to shrink your liver before the op and alcohol will have the opposite affect. It could even prevent you having the op. Might have to wait a couple of months p.
  11. I had a lap band placed in 2015. I was strict - no caffeine, no soda, no alcohol. I attempted to eat vegetables and protein in the form of meat...only to regurge them back up every time. My surgeon was supposed to be "one of the best" around in the Valley of the Sun. The support groups consisted of skinny people with success stories and no understanding for what I was going through. The nutritionist eventually "fired" me because I was allergic to some fruits and vegetables and couldn't get others down. He stated that I needed to change my attitude and stop pretending that I was allergic to some fruits and vegetables. I was irritated to say the least. After filling the band to the max, I was dropped off of their radar. I honestly didn't want to go back - I felt that I had nowhere to turn to. I tried so hard - exercising, eating better, etc. I lost 30lbs, that was it. In 1 year, 30 lbs was ridiculous. So now, here I am, late 2017 and finally getting some help from a different surgeon who actually cares. I'm getting a conversion of the lap band to bypass. I know it's permanent but I need to make this change. I know I can eat right. I have no problems changing that part of my life. I've been overweight since high-school. I've never seen myself as a healthy weighted adult. I'm excited and nervous! Wish me luck!

    Alcohol!

I'm sure the answer is no but I forgot to ask the dietician if I'm allowed to have alcohol during my 2 week pre op liquid diet that I started today. Do any of you know?

    Sugar alcohol

I was not commenting on the effects of sugar alcohol, and xylitol. Also thank you for posting peer reviewed evidence as far too many people don't understand the importance of peer review. I always read real research ( peer reviewed), and never get sucked into the fitness woo( pseudoscience), and bro science. My advise also comes from my surgeons, and an outstanding registered dietitian, and not a nutritionist as nutritionist is not a professional title or actually certification. Net carbs does not have any actually scientific backing, and was created for marketing. There is no standard for how net carbs are counted on packaging or printed. All the current research does support the concept of net carbs. While xylitol for example has little effect on blood sugar, many packages use sugar alcohol as their reason to off set carbs in their net carbs calculation. That is very bad, and can be dangerous for some with diabetes. There is a reason net carbs don't appear on the nutrition labels. That's because it is not a regulated term by the FDA. It's a made up term by food manufacturers. It's also important to understand not all sugar alcohols are equal. Some do raise blood sugar. So how does the lay person know which raise blood sugar, and which don't? How do you calculate the net carbs not knowing if the sugar alcohol in that product has a higher glycemic index? You also need to be careful subtracting fiber in some products. Should someone subtract fiber to figure out net carbs? Well if they do that, and eat protein bars they need to be careful. Most protein bars use a form of fiber isomalto-oligosaccharides(IMO). IMO is highly processed and barely a fiber. On the glycemic index it is also equivalent to grapefruit or apple juice. I wouldn't call either of those low glycemic index. IMO also has 2 calories per gram. That counts for something. The point of my post is you need to be very careful with net carbs. You seem informed, and as such my post was directed at you, but it was for people who may just think net carbs printed on packages are what they can go by. It's much safer to count all carbs, and more important calories.

    Sugar alcohol

The difference is the effect on blood sugar levels and insulin response. Whether that is why you avoid carbs or not is a personal preference. But that is why I, and many plans, don't count them. This is an article with plenty of peer reviewed scientific articles quoted, with the pubmed links included-- https://www.healthline.com/nutrition/sugar-alcohols-good-or-bad#section4 And here's a rather dense scientific peer reviewed article about the metabolic effects of xylitol- https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3128359/ Interestingly the scientists have also shown links to positive effects on gut bacteria, bone density and collagen production! So, the science community quoted in this article doesn't think it's BS, they aren't marketing anything. Read, do research and make an informed decision. Or go by your surgical teams' plan... you trusted them to cut you open, trust their dietary advise over the advise of strangers on the internet.

Welcome ... what surgery ? Svg? I had mine in 3/10/17. It feels great almost 7 months post Op. best of luck in your surgery, you still got time... from here to December try practicing sipping water, eating slow, chewing throughly your food, cut down sugars, and would say cut down alcohol intake, also 30 min rule: no water 30 min after/before each meal... that way your transition post-op will be smooth
  18. At one year post-op, I have cut out pasta, rice, and carbonation. I will probably never have any of those things. I still follow a keto way of eating; therefore, I keep my carbs below 25 grams per day. So, I have little to no sugar. That is my choice, not my body's demands or anything. As far as alcohol goes, I have some sort of alcohol (usually vodka, water and Crystal Light Lemonade powder that I take to the bar with me) just about every weekend, and when I travel for work (60%-70% of the time), I often have a glass or two of red wine with dinner. I have found that my tolerance is now back to about where it was before the surgery. I have absolutely no issue with the alcohol whatsoever. Like @OutsideMatchInsidesaid, I just allow for the calories on days that I am going to have drinks. (Though, to be honest, I need to get my calories up some to make the weight loss stop, so I haven't been as much of a stickler about it lately.) I haven't tried beer, mostly because of the carbonation issue. And as much as I miss it, and I do, I've adjusted to drinking other things. For the record, I first had alcohol at three months post-op, and there has never been an issue. I've lost 217 pounds (from almost 400 pounds), and am happily at goal (180 pounds). YMMV.

Having a sleeve in hospital is hard.

Can someone bring you some protein based snacks that don't require refrigeration, I'm thinking like beef jerky, nuts, protein chips, protein bars or shakes and they can wipe the packaging down with alcohol to prevent contamination before it goes in your room and then you can keep them in your room? I've never seen a hospital that doesn't allow a person to bring in food or snacks that isn't on a special diet. You might have to get firm with them that you need the added protein

I don't consume sugar alcohols so there's no question for me. Good luck!

    Sugar alcohol

I count net carb so fiber and sugar alcohols are subtracted out. Different plans have different "rules"
  22. I heard alcohol will hit you very quickly because our stomachs empty so much faster. But seriously, your taste buds go through some major change. Mine started before I even got sleeved. Now sweet is overpowering sweet. I think cake or ice cream would make me sick. I have to say last night my husband had pepperoni pizza. I snagged one and put it in my mouth to try the flavor. Heavenly but WOW the flavor was intense. My dog then got a treatLOL! But it told me flavors are more powerful to us it seems. Right now a chicken breast and veggies sound like heaven but I've got another 30 days. Oh and I have zero hunger. This is nothing but mental at this point and honestly barely there.
  23. How are you guys counting sugar alcohols in macros? I like Dr. Johns hard candies. 4 pieces count as 18 carbs, 16 of which are sugar alcohols. Would you count 18 carbs. would you count 2 carbs? What’s your thoughts?
  24. I’ll be 62 in March so first looked into the over 60 group on this app but there wasn’t much going on there and the posts were pretty old. So if I behave myself can I stay in this group?! I’m almost 9 years post-op. I had my RNY on 10/24/2008. Hey I was 51 then! The day before my surgery I weighed 243.6 pounds. I lost 110 and kept it all off for a few years until I started eating the wrong foods, grazing and drinking alcohol. It wasn’t long before I had gained back 60 pounds. I’ve gotten 10 pounds off but would like to lose maybe another 40. I’m coming to this app looking for support from people who understand the struggles with regain. Have any of you regained some of the weight you’d lost? Are you having success losing again and if so how are you doing it?
