How do you measure your food?
Mrs.RRn replied to LynRN's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Would you say that you weigh all solids (meat, veggies, cheese, etc). And measure semi solids and edible liquids? And how much do you eat at one meal? I eat 2-3 oz of solid food at a meal. I weigh out my meat (example: chicken) and don't usually weight or measure my veggies bc I can usually only eat about a couple tsp-tbsp of veggies. If it's a semi-solid or thicker liquid, I eat about 3-4 Fluid ounces (like chili, Soup, yogurt) -
Bowel prep is killing me!
sc_mama4 replied to Jessica9190's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Send someone to the pharmacy and see if u can buy a sitz bath its a little hat thing u can buy and it squirts warm water to help clean u. Also don't use toilet paper get u the flushable wet wipes and gently clean urself then after every bathroom visit put Vaseline with some butt paste there. That's about all I can offer bc my rush became so raw it hurt. I did what I told u to do tho and it helped a lot. I have to use go the GoLite crap that should be renamed go aLOTly bc of my yearly scopes and that junk makes me raw and then causes horrible hemorrhoids. Best of luck to ya! ((Hugs)) -
I realize you are just repeating what you were told, so please don't be offended, but I call BS on her doc. I would love to know how he would know that the HCG specifically advanced the cancer when he didn't know she had it in the first place? I know women who had cancer while pregnant, where their docs knew they had cancer at the beginning of their pregnancy and their cancer didn't grow faster during pregnancy with 100X more HCG hormone in their bodies. It seems like another doctor talking about something they don't understand, not to mention, so nice of the doc to make the patient feel like it's all her fault. I lost my first 45 lbs on HCG and I looked fantastic, I wish that docs would just admit they don't know things instead of the know it all accusatory crap I so often hear about. I feel really bad for your friends mom, that's a terrible story, and the HCG is not the villain in it.

What's the best way to mentally prepare?
GotProlactinoma replied to ElseeG's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
One thing that might help you with long term success is to realize the mistake many doctors and even their nutritionists make, encouraging their patients even right after surgery to eat sweet tasting foods. This is a huge moment for you to rid yourself of sugar cravings. Stop eating anything sweet, period. Get your protein powder from grass fed PLAIN whey (or another plain protein powder, no sweetener in it, no flavor). I mixed it into full fat milk, or even water (really tasteless and boring), and then learned to enjoy it with a bit of flax seed in the wonderful full fat plain Greek yogurt. Get used to plain water. Unsweetened tea or coffee (use fats at will, cream, ghee, coconut oils). No fruit. And no fake sugars. None. No sweet tasting anything. Eating is difficult at first, and your gut bug population will change from your pre op diet. What a glorious opportunity you are given, to change the content of your diet. The surgery provides portion control for a long long time. But YOU can grab the opportunity to stop eating sweet things. When your gut population evolves over that first month, it will end up being the good bacteria that crave resistant starches like cooked and cooled potatoes and root veggies. You can even add some inulin (a fiber powder) or potato starch to your protein drinks. These starches will feed your gut bugs and keep them happy and regular, and they will only have you crave those starches. You won’t crave sweet foods if you avoid the sweetened whey powders and drinks and the fake color, sucralose jellos and crap. Broths and cheesy bakes taste way better than fake flavored fake sugared jellos. And keep you losing. Use the pause in your diet to choose nonsweet foods. What a great opportunity not to waste. -
I call BS on the post. Big fat piece of bologna.

cons of not having WLS........get bigger to where they would cut me out my housei was well on my way......and dying earlier then i needed too pros of having WLS......better health, mobility, wearing size 14 jeans today (19 months ago they were stretch size 30).......and LIVING.... up to the person who has any WLS to use it as the dr advises for best results....no one WLS is better than the other no matter what anyone says......you will hear this is better or this is that the majority of the rumors on the band is BS (people can write anything and people believe it).......and on any surgery, not just WLS....complications can happen and it is told to the patients so its not a surprise....but why spend the rest of my life going what if that because if i did that, i would be where i was before surgery......super morbid obese.. instead i took that chance, found my want power, woman'd up as my ole man and did what i HAD to do to make myself well with help of the lap band and plication.... whatever you get........WLS, do the best you can with it....... and see what happens.......

Haven't Lost Any Weight Since Surgery (3 Weeks Ago)
Webchickadee replied to hrtgoeson's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Complain away! It's important to get those feelings OUT in the open and not let them eat away at your motivation! You mentioned BC pills and TOM. Another 2 factors that will affect you weight dramatically from day to day and week to week is your hormonal levels! So you've got lots going on "in the mix" right now! And of course the healing and recovery overlays everything else. Feel free to feel down for a moment when you're comparing yourself to others (hard not to, I know). Then let that pass and turn to the positives (and grab that drink container and drink to it!) Try Protein shakes.....they will help you deal with 2 challenges simultaneously....protein and fluids! The more protein you do now, the better for weight loss, muscle preservation, long-term preservation of your hair (hair loss sometimes doesn't make itself known for 3-4 months, and early protein helps prevent or at least reduce it!). And of course, I forgot to mention that you should be taking body measurements! If you didn't do this just before your surgery, start now! Often times the body is changing dramatically and the scale doesn't reflect these changes. And many of us can't see the changes when we look in the mirror! Measurements done on a regular basis (I plan on doing mine monthly....so another 2 weeks for me to compare to my starting numbers) will help you see your progress even when the scale is being stubborn. Good luck, and don't worry about venting. That's why we're here! Who better to understand how you feel, and to help you feel better? -

BTW, 2 of my cats have a heart murmur. They are doing exceptional. I knew one had a murmur bc the breeder got it back from someone who purchased him and returned him back as defective. He is the best CAT I've ever had. He's an Ocicat. Hang in there. -
No restriction
BadWolfGirl replied to GotItDoneInHarlem's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I'm assuming you're still at mush food? I think once you start eating more solid food you'll feel more restriction. That being said, so many people had me so scared about certain foods and so far I can eat almost anything. The ONLY thing I've had a problem with is eating too quickly when I'm not paying attention. It happened again tonight. Taking to a friend as we were playing cards and was eating my crab and a few minutes after finishing, it came right back up. I also don't tolerate creamy soup, I think for the same reason. They go down too fast and then I feel sweaty and hot and nauseous but bc they're liquids there's really nothing left to throw up as it's already went down the tubes so to speak lol. Bottom line, you'll learn you best. Take it slowly! Sent from my Pixel 3 using Tapatalk -

Leaking/damaged port after fill?
me54him63 replied to olwen's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I just had my port revised in July. I had the band for 22 months before having a problem. My problem started with pain around and deep into my port site. I then started noticing that I was eating more. The revision went well. There was basically no pain. I was camping in a tent 3 days later. I have BC/BS for insurance and they paid for everything. I had to have an endoscopy and some fluoroscopy also. Slowly I've started to have some restriction, I've had 3 fills since being replaced. I've heard that insurances will pay for the revision much easier then replacement of the whole band. -
I am pro-choice as well..however I do beleive that people under 18 should be allowed to have them. I know so many people who if their parents found out would kick them out/beat them...and so on. Which to me is just as terrible as bringing a child into this world when one is not ready. I do not think it should be used as a form of BC but it is there for a reason. The reaosn they made it ok for teens to secretly get abortions was exactly because of that...what soem parents would do...it would really put their children in danger.

I was sleeved and unbanded on July 9th. Honestly, I'm less than thrilled with the results. I had the stupid band done Sept 28th, 2010. Worst thing ever!! I went from 238 down to 205 in 5 months and then hit a wall and went up to 222 at one point. I was 217 the day of the sleeve surgery. I lost 14 pounds in two weeks and since then it's been torturous. After the first 14, I have only managed to eeek out 9 pounds in 8 1/2 weeks despite the plethora of protein items and kick ass physical therapy workouts for my knee 3 times a week to get me in shape for ski season in two months. I honestly thought that I would have been down 35 by now. I was looking for 2 pounds a week based on my intake and exercise for the first few months. I don't think that that is too much to ask for considering that I physically can't consume large quantities of food. I don't cheat with high calorie treats, sugar taste horrible to me, I only drink water and the occasional Starbucks Refresher which is 90 calories. I do allow myself small amounts of carbs earlier in the day to have quick energy to burn for workouts. I'l even go to bed hungry just to force my body to live with what I've fed it. I won't lie and say that it's not depressing to read the success stories of others here. You would think after two WLS that my body would get the hint. My blood sugars are fabulous, my cholesterol levels are enviable, my blood pressure is wonderful;it's the fat that clings to my body that pisses me off. Why won't it vacate the premises?

Here is another story on Global News about another woman from BC complaining of a leak after gastric sleeve surgery with Dr. Almanza. http://globalnews.ca/news/1581936/north-van-woman-still-recovering-after-gastric-sleeve-surgery-in-mexico/ If there wasn't a 3.5 year wait list to get the surgery in BC on the public health care system, people wouldn't be paying to have it done elsewhere.

This news story ran in BC, Canada earlier this week. A lady came back to Canada after VGS surgery in Mexico, with a leak and a sliced spleen. The story does not specifically name the surgeon she had, but they show the receipt she got from the clinic she used, which was "Bariaticenter" in Tijuana. You can figure out who the surgeon was from there. http://globalnews.ca/video/1569692/mexico-surgery-warning The lady sounds a bit nutsy, but even so, she didn't pay for this. I am still going to Mexico next week for my VGS surgery, but not to this clinic. This video is a bit of fear mongering I think, but obviously, this lady had a very bad experience. Research, research, research!

Anyone have an easy/fast recovery after VGS surgery?
Kris77 replied to Emilka's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Hi!! I was sleeved in July 2018. Been in maintenance for a while now. Since 10 mos or so out. My surgery was uneventful (in a good way) stayed overnight which really didn’t think I needed to. No pain other than from the gas bc it was laparoscopic. Home w no problems. Out grocery shopping four days later. I’m very thankful it was an easy road for me. I also hadn’t ever had any surgery to my abdomen before which made it a clean slate. Also followed pre op diet to a t so my liver would be shrunk and as I was instructed. I feel like It’s important to follow everything your Dr says to do. I wish you an uneventful surgery as well!!! Welcome to the club!! -
I spoke to Bariatric Surgery Insurance Specialist today and she told me she was very familiar with Fed BC/BS. Her info to me was 35 BMI-40 with health related obesity issue such as diabetics II, sleep apnea. If 40+ considered morbidly obese so different criteria. She said I could come in they could see if I qualify (5 hr drive when roads are not snow covered). There is a 3 month surgery prep including 3month nutritionist/psych visit. I think I am borderline to being 35BMI/with possible diabetic II (runs in my family) with sleep apnea….but of course have to be tested. Another statement the office made to me is if I go to MX to have this procedure, that my BC/BS might cover me if I occur complications, esp if I was never approved. It started me to thinking…..what if????

Yay! I have BCBS Fed and it took about 8 days so don't get discouraged if it takes a little while!

So far just us...but don't give up. Others will join in. My husband and I are excited to meet someone that knows their way around in Florida. He actually would like to take a deep sea fishing trip that is really fishing for the blue marlins. Do you know a real fishing trip we could do for a long day? Bc every time we go to the coast and go deep sea fishing it is very touristy and not really fishing for the big stuff like he wants. And I am looking forward to lobster, especially if we can catch it which I heard people do in Florida but I don't know. We're all for staying somewhere very reasonable, so if you decide on a place let me know and I will make reservations. Join in people...it is a good chance to get a start on your summer tan. And I have a feeling that Floriday sun will shrink our skin!!!

Long term slow loser results?
JustJaime5 replied to snowkitten's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Hi all I actually just asked the same question in another post. I was hoping some more veterans would tell their stories of what it's like after the yr to yr and 1/2 mark. I'm losing but it's slow. My surgery was 12/9. Sw: 318.8 cw: 253 I'm 5'5" so I have just over 100 more to lose. I've also been measuring and I've lost 13.5 inches (at last check, I'm due for another) from my waist. Almost 8 in from my hips. So I'm seeing movement but it's very slow. I don't mind working my butt off until I get to goal weight, I just want to know what happens when you hit that timeframe. It concerns me bc any slower weight loss and it will come to a halt. -
What medical issues have you overcome since WLS?
gabybab replied to Jemma23's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I've been diabetic for close to 15 years. I progressively gained weight and had to up my diabetic regimen. After surgery I was told to go off all my meds, but that didn't work. My bs was still very high for a month. I started taking metformin and glimeperide, but it caused diarrhea and I had to stop the metformin. I was on metformin 1000 x2, Glimeperide 4mg x2 and 72 units of Lantus at night. Now I check my bs and if my bs is over180 in the morning or night I take the glimeperide, but seldom need to. I'm on 20 units of Lantus at night still. I'm hoping to keep reducing the meds as I lose weight. I've lost 61 pounds so far.
