I'll ask my NUT but...
PatientEleventyBillion replied to Joann454's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I second that you should get doctor approval for swimming.. Pack some stuff in a cooler too to keep yourself hydrated and fed. Take frequent breaks if you're doing any prolonged activity. -

Do you HAVE to follow a low carb diet?
Apple1 replied to slimmingsteff's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I have to keep my carb count down because of diabetes. So my plan is to eat low carb, but not ultra low. I will base the level on my bs and go from there. So far my daily carbs have been coming in around 30-35 and my bs has been great. -
Discouraged after initial consult Low BMI woes
belinda401 replied to GassyGurl's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I hope that isn't the case! I had to show a three year history for BC Anthem and I have been steady 35 for two years. The first year I was lower. -
Am I making the right decision?
2ndSpring replied to TBH183's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
Hi Dave, Welcome to the forum. You are asking all of the right questions (not everyone does) and thinking about the small details and how it will impact your life. This is definitely something to go into with your eyes wide open. The better educated you are, the more successful you will be. I'm about 8 months out and I wholeheartedly recommend it. I wish I had done it years ago. I wasted so many years being overweight and waiting to do things until i was thinner. The surgery stopped my body from fighting me and allowed me to focus on changing my mental issues around food. It is much easier to adopt new mindsets when your stomach isn't screaming to be fed. There are foods I have given up permanently, but i don't miss them. I also don't miss overfilling myself. I am able to eat out in restaurants and no one has noticed i eat so much less than them. I eat slowly and put the fork down between bites, so I wind up finishing at the same time as everyone else. All in all, it has been a great experience. Best of luck and keep us updated. -
5 months after my vsg surgery, I inadvertently became pregnant (Not really getting into the details here). First trimester I had horrible morning sickness and eventually got on Zofran. It helped a lot... for awhile. But now, I am getting into my 2nd trimester and everytime I eat, I vomit. It's not immediately like with the morning sickness-- but 10, 20, 30mins after eating. My ob says that it's my esophageal sphincter relaxing due to hormones (the acid coming up triggers my gag reflexes). He prescribed prilosec 2 times a day, which I was already on once daily bc of vsg. I'm eating smaller portions than before the pregnancy. Nothing has helped, and I'm so tired of vomit. Has anyone been through this? HELP!

Thank you so much! My pre op diet isn't al liquid, its protein shake for breakfast and lunch, and then a Greek yogurt or protein bar for snack (twice a day) and then dinner is 6 ounces of meat, 1 cup cooked vegetables and 1/2 cup starch. So I'm on day 5 of my 2 weeks and I've already lost 6.6 pounds so I'm hoping it's working lol I'm terrified of that happening, bc I have had some slip ups to be honest. But I hope all goes well on surgery for you![emoji173]️

VENTING - can vs should
Greensleevie replied to BigTexasMandy's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
. NOT EVERYONE HAS MENTAL ISSUES WITH FOOD THAT IS OVERWEIGHT OR UNDERWEIGHT OR IS INCAPABLE OF CHANGE OR INCAPABLE OF LEARNING WAYS TO COPE WITH FOOD ADDICTION. This is complete and utter BS. If you're having major surgery to lose weight (or keep it off), you've got issues with food. Also, this surgery won't magically make all of our psychological problems with food (or any others) go away. You can't expect to be cured with the surgery alone. Yes, people can develop coping mechanisms, but it takes work on their part and in some cases, professional help. The people we see asking questions about foods that are clearly not on their plan may not be quite ready for the commitment it takes to make the surgery successful in the long run. Some people feel they're doing a service to point that out. Me personally? I couldn't care less unless they are endangering themselves. It's not my job to define what their success looks like. -
I'm terrified of going in and my liver didn't shrink enough so I'll have to reschedule, my original date was april 26th but the surgery was rescheduled for June 7th bc something came up and he wouldn't be in the office. If you don't mine my asking, did they start surgery and see they couldn't do it or by ultrasound or something?

A lil confused. Planning for post op stages 3,4,5
Apple1 replied to lizpuller's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I do think it is the almost 70g of protein in the 8 oz steak that causes the delayed bs spike. The calories aren't the driving force because if that was the case it wouldn't matter what you eat as long as it was low in calories and there would be no spike. fat does not raise bs because it is not converted to sugar in the body, protein can be converted to sugar if eaten in excess. I am not saying excessive fat consumption is good just that it doesn't directly effect bs, and I worry less about the fat content then carbs. I think the key is you are only eating 20-30g at a time. I can do this also with no spike. P.S. I agree that the proper portions of protein do not spike bs and will most likely not ever be a problem for most people after WLS. -
A lil confused. Planning for post op stages 3,4,5
Apple1 replied to lizpuller's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Yes, that was my point, it is possible to eat too much protein before the sleeve and have it effect bs, but not likely after the sleeve. Of course portion control is key, and obviously I had a problem with that as probably many here can relate to. I am hoping my diabetes stays in remission and my portions in control. That is the plan. -
Ive been there !!! I got my lapband in april of 2013 .. lost 80 pounds and found out i was pregnant the following October ! My start weight was 305 im now 315 and my daughter is now 2 .im getting my band taken out and getting the sleeve 6/29 . Im so excited im tired of failing at all diets . Ive really been trying so hard to loose weight on my own but it wasn't working. My drs basically told me the band wasnt as effective anymore and that most of this patients are going from band to sleeve . I also feel the bad just wasn't enough . I think you should definitely consider it ! Talk to your dr find out the pros and cons it doesnt hurt to do some research. Im actually really excited over this and originally back in 2013 i was anti sleeve bc of how permanent it was . My mind set has definitely changed since then !

A lil confused. Planning for post op stages 3,4,5
Apple1 replied to lizpuller's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I have found that eating higher portions of protein will produce a delayed spike in my blood sugar. Pre-op if I ate 8 oz of steak my bs might be 125 2 hours post meal, but at 4 hours could be 145-150. I learned through testing that 6 oz was the max portion I should eat if I wanted my bs to be less than 140 2 hours post and continue going down. I think eating too much protein at a meal can and will cause a delayed spike in a diabetics bs, how much will cause it ? I think that depends on the individual. I don't know about post op because I am not even eating meat yet, and I doubt I will ever be able to eat an 8 oz steak again. I can say drinking a protein shake with 20g does not spike me much at all and I am still off my medication thus far. -
Alcoholic Drinks
PatientEleventyBillion replied to JPM514's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I personally won't drink a drop of alcohol until I know my liver issues are completely resolved first. Another criteria I'm imposing is to be my bottomed-out weight, so I don't have to worry about stalls that will result. Like others here have shown with their planning, it makes 100% sense to go at it from a logical perspective.. just be careful if you're doing any sort of exercise or prolonged standing. Keep hydrated and fed. -
Thanks...yeah she uses staples bc ppl were overdoing it and the glue wasn't holding sites closed n ppl were healing up

Surgery Cancelled Due to High Blood Pressure
Seahawks Fan replied to tx_scorpio's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Wow! Did they give you another date? Hopefully you can stay on the pre-op diet & do it in a week or so. Sorry to hear this it has been my biggest fear! Even more than having the surgery. All of the prep & pre-op diet then this happening. Health reasons or some insurance BS whatever the reason. They really are just looking out for you but that's extremely unfortunate this close to surgery. So sorry! Hang in there & hopefully this doesn't set you back for long. -
I fainted at a concert last night
MarinaGirl replied to sarajeano's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I'm so sorry that happened. When I feel faint or dizzy I eat a little salt and then drink some water. It helps. I keep little packets of salt in my purse/backpack so I'm ready when the need arises. I haven't had any alcohol in months and I'm 6 weeks post-op. For me I think the triggers are dehydration and low BP or BS. -
Missing 1 Year of 3 Year Weight History
Seahawks Fan replied to MzKelly615's topic in Insurance & Financing
I'm scheduled for Surgery on May 30th & still worry about some BS insurance issue. If I downed all these shakes & for some reason they start chirping I'm going to flip out! Hopefully they just disappear long enough for most of your stomach to do the same. That's what I'm hoping for as well. Good luck! -
Diabetics getting WLS?
AngieK72 replied to CuriouslyCurious's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Hi! I've been type 2 for over 8 years now. My BS had been out of control for over a year (totally my fault). At my pre op phone call with anesthesiologist they told me my sugars had to be under 200. I FREAKED!!! So for 3 days I literally watched everything I ate and managed to do just that. I am two weeks post-op and am healing very well per my surgeon. Had an appointment yesterday. Plus my sugars have been running between 80-150 since surgery!! So awesome. Happy healing you amazingly brave people!! [emoji1591]Angie -
Hey all, This is my first post on this site, but I have been following and reading many posts before and following my surgery. I finally decided to speak up and talk about some of my experiences so far. For starters, my first couple weeks post surgery went well, but boy were they miserable. Now when I say "miserable," I do not mean that I was in pain or that I had regrets, but it was more of a matter of it being a full time job plus overtime just trying to stay hydrated and fed. Before surgery, I was a chugger. I would just down obscene amounts of water at different intervals during the day and that is how I functioned. The same came from my eating habits. I would just eat twice a day, but large amounts and at a significant pace. I realize in hindsight that those things were part of the reason I got to be as unhealthy as I was. The learning curve came in viciously as I had to relearn consumption habits. I had to carry around 3 different cups during the day to get in my diluted juice, water, and protein shakes throughout the day. I had to set alarms to remind myself to eat and exercise. Now that I am 5 weeks out, I have come a long way already. I've lost 30 lbs post surgery, I have been able to take larger swallows of liquids at a higher rate as well, and best of all I can finally eat ALMOST NORMAL FOOD! Basically over the course of this past month, I have cooked in bulk and eaten the same thing for 2 weeks at a time, interjecting some fruits when I could. I have my first follow up appointment with my doctor tomorrow and I know he is going to nail me on my protein consumption because I am horrible about remembering to drink my shakes, but I am trying. They are just disgusting and I am getting burnt out on them. If you guys have any suggestions on different types of protein shakes or unflavored powders, I would appreciate them. I need them to be somewhat budgetable though. Currently on Sam's Premier Chocolate powder. Anyways, thanks for listening to my ramblings and I look forward to hearing from you guys. Share away btw. I love learning of other's experiences!

Five months out and exhausted
hermione53 replied to hermione53's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Thanks, everyone, for your responses. My nutritionist thinks I should keep the calorie level where it is but add in a serving of fruit and a serving of grains per day. I don't know what I think of that since it'll kick me out of ketosis. I'm consulting with my psychiatrist this morning bc it's possible that this is depression, which is something I've struggled with since childhood. -
how long did it take to heal
Seattle WLS Newbie replied to nana perez's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
How are you all feeling? I had surgery on 4/24 and am just making it through my first stall (it lasted 2 weeks) I've lost 15lbs since surgery. Liquids are hard for me to get down and water is the worst. Super bummed bc I LOVED cold filtered water 24/7 prior to surgery. -
I haven't taken any meds for my diabetes since the day before my surgery. I was given one dose of insulin the first night in the hospital as my bs spiked to 225. Everyday since it has been completely normal between 75-120. So far so good. i am so happy with this outcome thus far.
