How did you figure out if you had dumping syndrome?
incredibleshrinkingnurse replied to DaisyAndSunshine's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
It’s really strange but I’m 6.5 years out from VSG and I get all those dumping symptoms sometimes 3-4 hours after eating. It doesn’t seem to matter what I ate, although I’ve noticed peanut butter seems to do it frequently. I’ve been eating low carb/semi-keto for months so I’m not sure why it’s happening. I’m going in for a ph and manometry screen soon, hopefully that will give some answers! -
Some of us eat a ton of grains and carbs for maintenance. LOL. I do. I eat a lot of plant protein. I don't eat refined carbs much anymore...no sugar or white flour in my normal diet. But I do eat oats, potatoes, beans, chickpeas on a daily basis. Some people do really well with a keto approach to weight loss, some are more like me. You'll find lots of both in the weight loss surgery crowd:) Like most things in life....one size fits all....is pretty much a falsehood. Whichever road you take, wishing you terrific success and great health:)

Anyone Ever Cancel Their Surgery? I Did... Not Sure How I Feel
You Are My Sunshine replied to You Are My Sunshine's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
Not sure... I'm not doing Keto, just kind of intuitive eating, trying to eat clean. I was doing pretty well, but have veered a bit. I'm very happy that I did NOT gain back the weight I lost on the pre-op liquid diet, so for me that's a win - I've lost 2 pounds since. Not a lot, and I hope I can keep it off during the holidays and make wise choices. After this week I am going to call and see what my options are and then make a decision from there. -
My nutritionist suggested I increase my fats. I looked into keto but my sleeved tummy doesn't care for bacon, which I used to love before surgery, or any other breakfast meats. And mentally I'm not ready to start ingesting foods high in fats. I do eat cheese and drink whole fairlife milk and unsalted nuts. I like butter but rarely eat it and on rare occasions have avocado (never was a fan) I would love to hear what foods you guys incorporate in your keto diets. Thanks in advance Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App

July 2021 Surgery People!
SallyAJones replied to Sammys_VSG_Evolution's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Hi everyone! I'm now almost eight weeks post op (5 July) and I've lost 15kg. I still find liquid and soft food easier to digest and find foods too rich... basically my body regects food quickly. I haven't come up with a good weight loss story yet, keto seems believable... Anyway nice to have a community xx -
Yes, keto has been around for a long time, as has most of the popular diets that have gone in and out of fashion - there really isn't all that many things that can be done in a weight loss diet that hasn't been tried before and found wanting, often multiple times. Keto has some apparent benefit in the treatment of epilepsy but beyond that it is fundamentally just a fail safe or backup mode for our bodies in time of famine - we can get by but the body really doesn't like it (that's why if provides you with the bad breath and BO, telling you that this really isn't a great idea....) Over the short to intermediate term, it can work well - as most diets do - but in the longer term for the morbidly obese, beyond a year or so, it shows the same 95+% failure rate as any other diet effort (though WLS tends to extend that years' grace period some.) Indeed, if you go back 20-30 years in the WLS world, many were often told to simply eat as they did before, but just less (courtesy of their WLS) and it overall worked well for the first year or so, but obviously since they never learned to eat sustainably and correct the habits that caused them to need WLS in the first place, they typically regained. So, from a strictly weightloss perspective (as opposed to longer term weight control), almost any diet will work with your WLS for the first year or so. What really counts is how well you adapt to a sustainable weight maintenance life in the long term. If keto works for you to do that - great; if going vegetarian or vegan does it, that is also great. Balanced diet, South Beach, Zone, Atkins, low fat, Mediterranean or whatever - go for it, and don't worry about what others do because if it doesn't make sense to you, then is isn't right for you. Clinically, high fat, low carb diets such as keto or paleo (or at least the current commercial interpretation of paleo) are used for minimizing or avoiding weight loss after a gastrectomy (such as when done for cancer or gastroparesis) owing to its high caloric density - one needs lots of calories in a small volume to maintain weight, which is just what such diets provide. This isn't to say that they can't be used for losing weight, but the odds are more stacked against one in doing so, and one needs to be aware that just because a food or recipe is labelled as keto (or paleo, vegetarian, vegan, etc.) doesn't mean that it is appropriate for weight loss or contol - one still needs to watch what one eats.

April 2022 Surgery Buddies
Rachel_Hannah replied to Crinkles's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I was on metformin at one time, but it made me violently sick and passed out several times while on it, so I'll never agree to be put on it again. It also caused an issue with my pancreas (already had an issue, but it enflamed it?) I can't do keto/low carb because I literally stop losing weight, but my diet is mostly protein/veg with a little bit of sweet potato or a couple of tbsp of quinoa or brown jasmine rice, depends on the meal. I've noticed the 2 weeks I was below 35g carbs after surgery I not only had issues with low blood sugar, but I also didn't lose any weight during that time. I was low carb for years and never lost weight, no one can really explain why since my blood work does show insulin resistance. I don't take any medicine for hashimotos. Many people with hashimotos thyroiditis get put on thyroid medicine. I was on Leothyronine (NP thyroid did not work for me, caused major weight gain), but since surgery we've done the labs 3xs and my provider said not to take it and we will re-test in 90 days unless my weight loss stops completely. Hopefully that means I won't need it at all in the future. I'm still AIP-ish in eating, which is what helps the most with hashis symptoms. Luckily, eggs don't cause a flareup and most fermented dairy doesn't either. However, milk-based products and casein does. -
December 2017 Gastric Bypass!
FarmMomma replied to 823freckles's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
Hey all! I had my RNY December 1st and came home yesterday. Would love to have some surgery support buddies! I’m 31, 5’5”, and started at 286 lbs. surgery day weight was 281, and I’m already down to 271 as of this morning. My doc has me on liquids until 1 week post op, then I start protein shakes. My my reason for having the RNY was my PCOS. I’m active, eat healthy (keto for 3 years with minimal weight loss), but because of my PCOS, the weight never goes anywhere. I’m a nursing student and mom to a 4 year old and 2 year old. Hubby took the week off to take care of me, and I’m recovering well. Little to no pain, sleeping well, a little soreness, but overall dong wonderfully. Good of luck with surgeries this month! -
My Weight Loss Journey: From 150 kg to 64 kg, and Now Back to 94 kg - Seeking Support and Advice
Tink22-sleeve replied to Seif_s88's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
Hi Seif_s88, Yes I can relate. I lost about 100 pounds and have gained back about 50. 10 days ago I restarted a keto diet which has worked for me in the past. Down 10 pounds so far. I find that the keto diet helps with cravings and I like the discipline. I check my urine ketones every morning, and I find that to be motivating, as well as seeing the scale move down. I remembered to get baseline measurements, so I can see progress that way too. Omgoodness- body image issues. I get that too. I am 55 and was sleeved almost 10 years ago. The ups and downs sometimes make my head spin. Some days I look in the mirror and am shocked to how time has gone by. Overall, I try to be kind to myself. When I get too much in my head about my appearance, I try to remind myself that I am more than this body. So much more.. and so are you -
Need to hear from VSG to DS revisioners
Goldy6575 replied to Goldy6575's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
Yes, here is update. It took a little longer for me to heal for the DS over the sleeve. My belly was sore and bloated for a solid 2 weeks, with painful gas. It was a pretty uncomfortable recovery in the hospital. I had mine in Mexico and they really don't give you any pain meds. I now have figured out what I can eat. Pretty much anything I want!! Minus sugar...I have found I can still eat bread on my sandwich with no ill effect, and can have just a few bites of dessert. I can have 1 slice of pizza, steak and corn on the cob, roast beef, ... nothing really bothers my stomach. Since I am trying to lose, I do limit my portions, but I'm fully satisfied. Do not feel like I'm missing out at all, nor do I have uncontrollable cravings. I have found that if I eat too much of a carb or sugar, I will have gas and alot more loose stool the next day. It's not like uncontrollable diarrhea or anything, just have to go alot. For that reason it's really not worth it to overeat on carbs, and it keeps me from doing it. And I try to limit my carbs for the weight loss effect, not low carb by any means... just do half a piece of bread with sandwich, etc. The bathroom situation is not as horrible as a lot made it out to be. I had problems with constipation before, so it's actually nice to have looser stools. It is more stinky, but it's worth it!! I have not had any accidents..when I'm traveling I take devrom tablets, and it takes the stinkies away. It took awhile for me to trust the weight loss from malabsorption. At first I didn't trust it, and was eating hardly anything at all, and it actually slowed my weight loss. Once I trusted it, and ate like a normal person (about 1000-1300 cals a day) the weight started coming off. I have lost 12 since July 20. It's slow but steady. I average about 2 lbs a week... before my DS when I would try so hard doing keto, or 1000 cals a day ( which felt like starvation) I absolutely would not lose. For breakfast I usually have 4 sausage links or low sugar oatmeal. For lunch a deli meat sandwich with cheese and Mayo, usually on just one piece bread. For dinner, usually grill a meat with a veggie, or do tacos, or bacon avacado sandwich, or egg drop soup with 2 crab rangoon. Or I also love Amy's frozen cheese enchiladas. I try not to snack between meals, because most snacks are carb heavy. If I do, I'll do cheese sticks. Any questions, please ask. Would I do it over again, heck yes. -
Lower Abdominal Pain, cramps. (Optifast 2nd of 4 weeks)
Buklova replied to Buklova's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
OMG, I was thinking the same. I have done a keto diet before and it worked. I think there is somekind of kick back epsecially since they required 3 of the shakes a day. I would do better if I had the soups or bars. I hope your surgery went well! -
I love carbs and sugar. I still crave both just as much, immediately after the surgery. My plan is everything in moderation, one day at a time. If I cut something out of my diet completely, I usually end up giving in and over doing it. Right now Saturday is my "cheat day" which means higher calories and a treat. I am pretty much low carb the rest of the week. I don't know what this will look like long term, I'm pretty certain I will be a complete failure 3 years out. Apparently the only way to be successful at this, is to become a body builder, or marathon runner and eat a lifelong keto diet. But, I don't want to eat only chicken and cottage cheese for the rest of my life, and I sure as hell haven't noticed an increased desire to run marathons post surgery either.

Sweeteners after gastric sleeve
SleeveToBypass2023 replied to Cheesekitty7's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I use monk fruit sweetener. Tastes sweeter than sugar but is recommended for those who are diabetic, on keto and low carb diets, and have had bariatric surgery. I love it, and I use it very sparingly, so it lasts a loooong time. -
25 gram Protein yogurt: Ratio
catwoman7 replied to Jonathan Carlson's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
yes - it is. They have a Keto version, too, but the protein level in that one isn't as high. -
Keto is amazing, after surgery I kept at Keto for a long time, issue with it is you have to be SUPER aware of your body and how sensitive you are to carbs. One slip up and you could slip down a slippery slope (which kinda happened to me over the Holidays just now!!) The key is tapering yourself to a comfort zone where you can tolerate little carbs. Most of the problems people complain about keto is, it's amazing to lose a LOT of weight and fast, issue is maintenance. Most people can't sustain a full fat and Protein diet forever, you will eventually want and need carbs and there in lies the problem. However, every human's body is different!

I love the BP store so far. And FB is stalking me with "keto" alternatives that work. Ah, FB stalky ads. In my mind.

Gained almost all weight back
livingstone replied to kgfan1's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
Hi guys - I'm in a similar boat. Sleeved March 2015 at 292lbs. Got down to 177lbs. Was pretty happy there but was aiming for 165. Started to gradually gain - by Jan 2020 I was up to 200, and then because of the pandemic and lockdown (boredom eating mainly) I was up to 220 this January. So I've not regained all my weight, but still regained about 40% of it. I'm on week three of trying to lose my regain. Down 10lbs so far (but some of that in week 1 was probably water weight). This is what has been working for me: 1. Keep it simple. It's calories in vs calories out. I tried Keto for two days and was so miserable that it was never going to be sustainable. So I'm just going for a straightforward trying to consume 1000 calories less than I burn each day - i.e. less than 1750. 2. Within that calorie allowance, I allow myself to eat anything I want, subject to the following rules. 3. My first calories get used on a protein heavy breakfast, lunch and dinner. Only after I've logged all of those do I get to incorporate snacks. 4. No drinking with meals or 30 minutes either side of a meal. But otherwise lots of water. 5. No fizzy drinks except at weekends. I never had a calorie problem with fizzy drinks as my weakness was Diet Coke. But now I only drink sugar-free cordial (Robinson's Orange and Mango or Orange and Pineapple for those in the UK). 6. If I want a snack, I have to have a drink (water or cordial) first to see if that stops the craving. 7. Everything - and I mean everything - I eat is measured and recorded on MyFitnessPal before I eat it. It helps me see the impact of a particular choice on my calorie levels for the day, and sometimes leads me to make a different choice. 8. Six days of the week, I must be under 1750 calories. One day a week (usually Sunday) I allow myself up to 2500 calories but only if I have 'banked' enough calories during the week. So if, say, on Monday I consume 1500 calories rather than 1750, those 250 go into the bank and I allow myself to use them on Sunday (up to the maximum of 2500, which is roughly what I burn in an average day of activity). I've been doing that since 4 January, and have gone from 220lbs to 210lbs. I am aiming for 2lb loss a week for the next three months, and then to slow it down to about 1lb a month for another three or four months. -
Need lap band removed revising to Gastric Bypass
EmKat replied to MelissaWisconsin's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
Hi. I have had a lap band for 11 and half years. I lost around 100 lbs with it but it turned me into a bulimic because I could eat whatever I wanted and just "regurgitate" it back up. It was a bad cycle to be in, but it kept my weight off. Finally last year I went to my bariatric surgeon and confessed up. He did some tests and realized my esophagus was "floppy" and dilated. He did a complete unfill of my band at the time. I was able to maintain my original weight loss on the keto diet, but after 10 months I fell off the keto wagon and the weight QUICKLY returned. I gained around 50 lbs in 4 months!! I went back to my surgeon a year later and we have decided to remove my lap band and switch to the gastric bypass. He is not a fan of the lap band surgery anymore and is not recommending them to his patients. I have my surgery next week on October 6th. I am nervous because I am 52 now and postmenopausal. Im definitely not as active as I was when I first had my lap band surgery almost 12 years ago. How many people on this forum have had the lap band to bypass? How was their weight loss compared to the first surgery? What differences do you notice with restriction? Anyone having the surgery soon? or recently? Thanks in advance! -
Bullet Proof Coffee
OutsideMatchInside replied to y0lis's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Sent from my iPad using the BariatricPal App I keep seeing people say coconut oil, but real Bulletproof coffee uses MCT Oil, not coconut oil. They are not the same thing. Bulletproof coffee requires MCT oil and unsalted grassfed butter, both are needed because both provide different things. I left a bunch of my Keto and low carb Facebook groups because I was sick of people spreading misinformation about Keto, bulletproof and just nutrition in general. @@woo woo Keep using your premier shake. -
Vegetarian saying no to keto diet
Arabesque replied to imaginegirl's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
Have a look at Dr Matthew Weiner’s Pound of Cure book & his you tube videos. He’s a bariatric surgeon who supports a low animal protein diet. It may not be anything all that new but may make you more comfortable about how to manage your weight loss post surgery. A good dietician should help you devise a way of eating that is best for you, your health requirements & your eating preferences. The biggest ficus post surgery is your prirein intake (& fluids) but I’ve never heard anyone say they were restricted to getting their protein only from animal sources. Plenty of plant based protein shakes & powders, yoghurts, milk, etc. as you know you can eat to meet the goals you’ll be given. Initially after the surgery you will be on a staged return to eating diet. This is support your healing tummy & not put undue stress on your digestive system. There are some foods we’re not advised to eat during this period. But again a good dietician should be able to advise you of alternatives. Mind you many have refried beans on their list of recommended foods during the staged return to eating stages. While I was on keto for my pre surgery diet, I was not encouraged to follow it long term by my dietician: good for kickstarting a diet but not long term she advised. I had my own doubts about it so I was glad. Many of us use the weight loss stage to devise a way of eating that best suits our needs & preferences & don’t follow any specific ‘diet’. I mean if there was a diet that worked for everyone none of us would have been obese & needed surgery. Personally I’m a low fat, low carb (2 serves of whole/multigrain carbs a day), low sugar & high protein (absorption issue). Many vegetarians successfully have surgery so your eating preferences should not be a deterrent to you either once you find a supportive surgeon & dietician. -
I've considered Keto but I've always done better by counting carbs. Years ago I lost 40 pounds by watching my carbs but eventually gained it back then decide to have the sleeve. I do not regret it, my only regret is that I didn't do it years ago. My nutritionist told me that with my strong desire for sweets that I should have a piece of sugar free chocolate everyday. I just need to discipline myself and only eat sugar free and low carb. I have come too far to turn back now!

MCT Oil, Keto..an alternate way to eat Post VGS

I definitely consider myself lucky! Just a bit of anxiety surrounding my rules being so different from the vast majority of what I see online about people's requirements and all. Was hoping to quell it a bit. I considered maybe imposing my own liquid pre-op diet for a couple days leading up to surgery to play it safe, but I know I'll be miserable if I do. When I've cut out sugar in the past to do do keto, the first few days are just migraine ridden. I also don't know that 2-3 days would actually be enough to shrink the liver at all.

MCT Oil, Keto..an alternate way to eat Post VGS
niseys4 replied to GeTnBackuP's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Hello! Thank you for talking about Keto diet! B4 my surgery i bought a keto diet cookbook but i only tried some of the smoothie recipes. I am now a 7 wk post op sleever. I still love to have my cup of decaf coffee with flavored non dairy creamer. I use International Delight. But in order to get my protein in first thing i added 1 scoop of Isopure zero carb protein powder in my coffee with a Tsp of coconut oil (ie: Rocket Fuel). Im unable to drink it everyday just on the days I dont go to the gym. Thats because the coffee is like a laxative for me! I like the keto diet idea but measuring Macos or calculating my fats & calories seems so confusing! I think the easiest thing for me to do is just to follow the recipes in the Keto for beginners cookbook & log what I can eat on my FitnessPal App & let it do the macos thing for me! By the way my 1 of my daughters started doing the Keto diet again @ 5 months post op & is doing great with her weight loss! She had the Gastric Sleeve also! I would like to continue following this topic to learn more about keto dieting after WLS! Thanks again for opening up this disscusion! Sent from my SM-T530NU using BariatricPal mobile app
