    Mad at myself

Hi! Good job on getting yourself together to move past the trauma and towards getting your life back on track. You can read some of the posts I have made on here - on various threads to understand that I, too, know loss. I maintained a 180lb weight loss from 2005-2019 with just diet and exercise. my suggestion for you in the gym would be to start with stretching. Stretch in between everything you do there. While you're walking on the treadmill or doing cardio, stop after about 10 minutes and stretch. Get into your body! The stretching will allow you to feel your body in ways that you may have not before. This can become like a meditation and also improve your flexibility. You body will love it and it will help to propel you. Feel free to reach out if you want a more guided approach.

    Plateaued at 11 months post-op 😔

all I can say is that the last 20 lbs were a bear for me to lose. We're talking like two lbs a month, despite the fact I was really working at it. And after being down there for a few months, those 20 lbs came back on - and here I sit. I do know that it's very common to have a 10-20 lb rebound after one hits their lowest weight - but in my case, I also wonder if maybe where I am now is where my body really wants to be (my set point). That's not to say I couldn't lose it again, but that would involve dropping back on my calories, and having to fight to get down there again - and then continue to struggle to keep it there. of course, you could also just be in a long stall, too. Mine tended to last longer the closer I got to a normal BMI. Or...yes - it could be that you're building muscle. long story short - it's hard to tell. It really could be any of these things. That's a good idea to run it by your team next time you see them. In the mean time, just keep up with the good eating and exercise habits....sounds like you've done really well so far!
  3. I tried to be a big dog-found out I was still just a pup! I am about 10 weeks post-op. I was out and about this weekend, and stopped at a stir-fry restaurant. I did order a lot of protein, but it (of course) comes with rice and you have to have baby corn, water chestnuts, etc., etc.. I ate a little, it was so good, ate another bite. (Can you see what coming??) By the time I left, I was sweating, and it's a 30 minute ride home. I was fortunate I had a plastic shopping bag... It was the first time I got the foamies. I would drive a little, then find a place where I could pull over and retch til my toes curled up.. Go a little further...repeat... Back to soft food, and no more stir-fry for a long time!.

    weight plateau and energy loss

How long did you have the nausea? I am about 10 weeks post-op, still on two nausea meds, queasy most of the time. I'm 68....
  5. Hi, everyone! I’m 11 months post-op from VSG and I have a bit of a dilemma. I have not been losing any weight as of about 6 weeks ago. I’m 38, 5’5”, and currently yo-yoing between 177 and 178 during every weekly weigh-in. I still want to lose about 30 more pounds to put me in a healthy weight class. Nothing has changed with my eating habits - I still eat very small portions, mostly solid protein, and do not snack much during the day. Since the surgery, I have had some issues with orthostatic hypotension (dizziness from low blood pressure) and hypoglycemia (low blood sugar), so I would be very surprised if my diet needed any adjustment right now. I should mention that I am coming off of ten years of disability for early onset degenerative disc disease, so other than twice-weekly physical therapy, exercise has been completely foreign for me, hence the excessive weight gain. I’ve had four neck surgeries and countless back injections and procedures. At my heaviest, I couldn’t stand for more than 10 minutes without excruciating pain in my lower back. However, in the last month, I’ve been feeling well enough to start seeing a personal trainer once a week and easing into a light workout routine (dynamic stretching, light free weights, strength training, etc.). I’m also walking more frequently and for longer distances. My question is this: could the lack of weight loss be due to rebuilding muscle from my new exercise regimen? Or should I try to adjust my food intake again and see what happens? I have my one year checkup with my gastric surgery team coming up next month and I plan to talk to them about this issue, but I wanted to seek out any advice on here, too. Thanks so much in advance!!

Yes! Sleeve on 4/19. Try to remain positive and think of where you will be a year from now and how much happier you will be and healthier!
  7. Same! Rings are my favorite jewelry and I have a ton, but they're all size 10. I wear a 7 but now but almost a 6. I sure miss my wedding rings but I'm wearing a temporary one for now until I get them resized. It's so good to have smaller fingers! Great NSV for you! May 2022 surgery?

Dietitian gave me simple thing to follow with eat nothing that had more 10 g of fat and 10 g of carbs. Worked pretty good plus getting in the water. I’m the same just excited to have a tool that works and I plan on not taking that for granted. I have complete confidence in my surgeon and plan on following all the instructions to hopefully have no problems. 🙏🏼😊 I’ve done so so so much research lol

    Is it wrong or ok

Have you tried counseling? I'm a big fan of it. It's got me through the journey and my bad eating patterns. I'm over a month post op and having that counseling allows you to see why you do something and what to do instead. My urges to overeat were greatly reduced pre op and now that I'm post op, I have no urges to overeat. I've been with my psychologist for 10 months now. She's the best! I still eat food I like (that I can tolerate and is part of my plan) and I don't believe in moralizing food. It's people's bad behavior around food that's an issue, not the food. Moderation is key and learning to eat more protein over carbs is a good idea pre op. An easy way to do that is having a daily protein and calorie goal so you can get the right food in and not overdo it. Don't beat yourself up for eating things that aren't right for you in the moment either. Part of successful weight loss is believing in yourself and not giving up or beating yourself down so much because of a mistake. I still have my moody days trust me but any good dietician will tell you progress, not perfection. Especially if eating is emotional for you. Just make sure you're honest with your team and set clear goals and boundaries with food and weight. They're there to help you. Build a treatment team if you feel like you don't have control over what you're eating. And im sure lots other who comment on this thread will have good advice! Welcome to the community. 10. YMMV, of course, but I think it's pretty common to have problems with meat early on but eventually improve. I had a lot of trouble with meat for the first several months after I got to the solid food stage. Even though I was very careful to make sure it was moist (usually with some kind of sauce), eat small bites, and chew well, I would often get a feeling of a bite getting stuck on the way down, and it was very unpleasant but would usually clear up in 10-20 minutes. I'm 20 months out now, and I almost never have problems with anything I eat anymore. Every once in a great while (maybe once in 3 months), I take too big of a bite and/or don't chew well enough and get that "stuck" feeling, but I eat meat all the time without issue. I will say that I've gotten in the habit of taking small bites and chewing well, and most of the meat I eat is in a dish with sauce or a soup/stew, but I don't really have to think about it or be careful because now that's what feels normal to me. I, too, love my smoker and greatly enjoy smoked chicken, ribs, and pulled pork with sugar-free BBQ sauce! I haven't tried brisket since my surgery; I rarely eat red meat in general.

    April 2022 Surgery Buddies

Good idea about the appointments. I will schedule a hair cut soon. I’m scheduled for VSG 4/19, 2 week liquid diet prior. I purchased all my vitamins, abdominal binder, broth, jello, protein shakes, etc.. I bought silicone popsicle molds from Amazon and I plan on making my own sugar free ices. I am taking the surgery week off from work and working from home the 2nd week.
  12. I love going to craft shows and I love to buy rings but they never fit me and they'd always have to be sized for me or made specially. I was about a size 9-10. Yesterday I went to a craft show and most of the rings either fit or were on the big side! The ones that fit were about a size 7! The down side of this is now I have to have all of my old rings sized down, but I'm waiting until my weight is stable.
  13. I was sleeved 9 years ago. I lost 110kg over the first 2 years and maintained weight at 67kg for 3 years. Then, I was put on ssri and anti psychotic meds and gained 10 kilos in the first 3 weeks. I went on to gain back 70 kilos of what I lost over the last few years. My psyc. put me on metformin to minimise the weight gain (even though I’m not diabetic) and my weight stopped going up for about the last year now. I have just come back to the community today as I recently committed to losing this weight again. I’m pleased to hear a previous comment here that says that people have lost weight on mental health meds successfully, I’m on the wagon and going for goal.

    Sleep study - CPAP machine

It should not be a issue in regards to the surgery as after surgery for some it eliminates sleep apenea... I have a machine. I personally love it. Before i was getting maybe 5 hours of sleep. Now i sleep for 8-9 and sometimes 10 hours if i dont need to go to the bathroom lol. There is a shortage of machines because a while ago one particular brand Phillips was recalled. I personally have the resmed airsense 10 and love it.

    Brand new here

Someone asked me in this post what surgery will i be getting and honestly i have no idea as i mentioned my PCP put in the consult a few days ago thats about all i know at this point , i have a virtual interview April 1st. My wife as a matter of fact had gastric bypass 17 years ago and she tries to help me with what i could possibly be up against but it has been so long she does not want to mislead me or give me wrong information , anyway i am pretty scared because even though i have had both my hips replaced about 10 years ago i was told this surgery is more invasive i honestly do not know who to believe , i just know that i am uncomfortable in my clothes and if they fit they are extremely tight ( by the way i am 284 lbs and i am 5'7 } i am so obsessed with losing weight that i take all the weight loss pills and they do not work , i go on the cleanse juices, they do not work, i can not work out because i have a bad back, i am at my wits end it is so frustrating being heavy i am so self conscious of my weight i try on my clothes all the time, i apologize for rambling i am so tired of living like this , can anyone relate , thank you for listening , it helps. Negative comments from family members

I really appreciate it everyone. I do my best to ignore but some days it gets to me. I have a therapist so we talk about it as well. I've done 10 months now of counseling and will continue throughout the whole bariatric process. I told my family last night that I didn't want to deal with my problems the same way they do. They have issues with alcohol and my brother with both food and alcohol. They've refused to get help my whole life. It annoys me even more because I went out, got a psychiatrist, psychologist, dietician, surgery etc. And im still told you might fail, what makes this any different? Like look, I'm getting help...something they REFUSE to do for their problems. I REFUSE to be just like them. I really do appreciate the kind words of encouragement from everyone. I won't let their negativity stop me. I can't wait till I'm a year post op and they shut their traps. [emoji38] Sent from my SM-G975U using BariatricPal mobile app

There are many, many people on here who keep there weight loss surgery a secret. That way you get less negative comments. I told my husband and son. Its no one else's business. You can't unsay it now so you need to just smile and say the statistics are in my corner this time, even if you , my brother are not. Be strong, you got this and us on here. PS. I always know what to say, 10 minutes after I need it

    April 2022 Surgery Buddies

I am also having surgery on APRIL 12th (sleeve procedure). We have similar body types. I am 5’4” with a starting weight of 223. I lost 12 pounds since my first visit on January 25th, so my surgeon approved only 10 days of the liquid diet (instead of the typical two weeks). Things are moving so fast for me and I’m so thankful.

    Vegetarian meat substitutes

I get enough protein without meat I love No cow protein bars. If you need protein shake supplement Vega yea one I found I like. I am not vegan. I always ate a mix of vegetarian foods and meat but health reasons I slowly stopped eating meat. I did have eggs with a veggie burger (the actual vegetable style burger a way of getting veggies made in a way my gut could handle) Dr. Praeger's Cauliflower Burger and California Burgers have been my go to. I used to put egg on a small veggie burger. They have "Just egg" that is a vegetarian egg substitute that you can make your own scramble or omelette. There are many options not just beans. You can take plant based omegas, Bragg Nutritional yeast, Vitamin K to name three I can think of as top supplements. Protein intake is based on body weight and activity base protein is 0.36 grams Protein per 1lb of body weight. and more based on type of diet and activity level. too much protein actually converts to sugar. I am now working through some issues not related to my surgery. but have reached goal and maintained since my surgery 2019.

Now thinking if canceling surgery 🥺

No, super fast- the MGB on average gives greater weightloss than both sleeve and RNY. No problems keeping it off for now, no, but I'm prepared for the 5-10 lbs most people gain back after reaching the lowest weight.

    Clear protein drink

FYI: If you mix protein powder with more than the 8oz of liquid it thins it out and doesn't have the shake consistency. Example: I am so sick of shakes but I am pre-op so I have to suck it up. But 2 of my shakes a day are to be mixed with calorie free liquid rather than milk. So, I found crystal lite lemonade and strawberry protein powder to be delicious. But, I was getting tired of the "shake" so I tried to add more lemonade. I used 10 oz lemonade and my normal 1 scoop powder and it is nice and thin. Just like drinking actual lemonade. Post op- you get more of your fluids and still get the protein too!

    March 2022 Surgery Buddies

My surgery was on the 1st. I returned to work (part time light janitorial) this past Monday and feel great! The complication I had ended up being just a small bump in the road to recovery. I've lost about 10 pounds so far. In a few days I get to start soft foods that have more texture to them, so stuff like a soft taco with ground beef and cheese. I'll be on that phase for 6 weeks. Vegetarian meat substitutes

Gotta chime in to debunk the "it's hard to get protein when vegan" nonsense too! Total rubbish. Seitan is super high in protein, and the best and tastiest I've found is in Asian supermarkets. I use a faux bbq pork or faux roast duck seitan, both of which give 19 to 20 grams of protein per 100g. 6 months out, I can easily eat at least 100g with some greens per meal. My vegan protein water is 28g of protein per serve. Even without this, I can get 60g+ of protein a day through food. Protein fortified soy milk is 10g of protein per 250ml serve. If I have that in my protein powder, it's a whopping 40g of protein in one hit. I don't like protein shakes, so I make a matcha latte with the soy milk and get that 10g in. Without even trying, I get a daily 70 to 80 grams of protein in. Easy peasy.

    Any Regrets?

The study of 40% of women having acid reflux after came out in 2022. (Google with "2022" and you'll find the cohort study). My surgeon was at the forefront of this surgery, and taught others how to do it...he wasn't a newbee - I chose the best - lol. A male friend of mine had it with him 18 years ago had no problems. Another male friend of mine who had it with him 10 years later is on the PPI train - go figure. From what I see - nothing has really changed except they now "fix" the hernia you didn't know you had. This "fix" has a high failure rate - but probably buys the surgeon time. You won't have problems until a year or 2 down the line, and now you're someone else problem. I'd really look into the mini sleeve. It leaves a lot more of the stomach, and the fundus...which in theory will prevent your new tube stomach from sliding up into your esophagus. They're doing it in Europe and Mexico with some success. Ask your surgeon if he'll consider it. Maybe a larger Bougie - done by some surgeons - not others. If your doctor does a "one size fits all" bougie selection - find someone else. Plus - if you do have GERD, you'll need the some fundus for GERD surgery - which you won't have with the traditional sleeve. https://mexicobariatriccenter.com/services-list/mini-sleeve/ best of luck! PS - you are brilliant for asking these questions.
