(Vsg) Prove Them Wrong! - Where Does Yours Apply?
Sleeve2B posted a topic in Weight Loss Surgery Success Stories
Hello VST, When I first thought about having my surgery, it was about "health". First, in my mind I had to convince myself that I could do this. You know, change the diet -- stick to the plan..etc. I have gone down from 227lbs to 185 thus far. My goal...135-145lbs. When I began this journey, and read all the stories about "Who did you tell..." I knew, that I would not tell many people. I'm a private person. But, I did tell 1 of my sisters. Her comment, "Well, I know a few people who did that and though they lost weight -- they didn't loose that much." How much are you thinking about loosing? My response, it's not about the numbers, it's about my health! I had high blood pressure -- bordering on kidney failure, etc. I knew though I was althetic and have been for 20+ years, I still had to make a change. My diet was not right for the years that I was approaching. (Of course not! I was working out and still a size 16. No matter what I did -- the weight would not drop.) Sooo, bringing us to the future -- I had my surger back in Sept '11. It is now 4 months later and I am down 40+lbs and several more to go. I have went down to a size 12 in bottom and M's in tops. I recently spoke to my sister (who has lost weight the regular way and struggling to hold onto her 12's); she asked me what size was I trying to be? I told her I will maintain between 4-8. Maybe a 6 would be good to me. We'll see since I've never been a size 6 before. Her response -- you can't get that small! It's not in your family genes. I told her -- this surgery will allow me to do things I have never done before. It's not really about the clothes size, it's about the weight loss! I am RUNNING AWAY from my high blood pressure and issues with a fast vengence! Soooo whatever size I end up -- I will be. I have all the confidence in the world that it will happen-- so I know that I will get\be smaller. I mean really - Its' only been 4 months for me. I go home in April of this year, and can't wait for her to see my changes! Yesterday, when I walked in my gym I had someone tell me "Don't lose too much weight -- you are starting to get skinny"...lol Talk about great feeling! (Excuse the long letter..lol), but I must ask -- What has someone said\or did to you, where you've had to prove them wrong? -
Not Again- I Hit That Wall Hard
JayhawkJess33 replied to Lilu's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Lissa, I'm thankful you have a caring and competent surgeon too, considering he is also mine!!! LOL Seriously though, every time I read something about Dr. D I feel more and more that I made the perfect decision to go with him ) Lilu, I am so sad to see how much you are hurting because of this - I know I would feel the same as you even if I knew it was for the greater good in the long run. I read a quote from a poster this week that was something like "Keep your goal in mind and the bumps in the road won't matter" and I have thought back to that many times since. I think it is fitting for you too - I know it seems impossibly hard to stay positive right now and believe that it will, in fact, happen. My surgery can't come fast enough (I don't have a date and am so anxious to move forward I can't hardly stand myself!) so I know how frustrating more obstacles must be but really think about what the other posters have said. You want to be your healthiest for surgery and look at Lissa's situation - the extra time and hoops literally saved her life by preventing those clots from circulating. Keep coming here for support and answers to your questions - we will all get through it, one day at a time! -
I got it done 3 weeks back on 10th june.only one incision in the belly button.they made a video of the surgery and gave it to me.its a bit more expensive but totally worth it.recovery is super fast.

Unrealistic Fear - Slightly Paranoid
AliveAgain replied to june13sleever's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I'm only 25 days out from surgery, but I'm anticipating to get the same feelings with food in the future. At home, being able to measure everything really helps. But going out is another story. That's why we did this, we added this tool for a reason. It's a way of policing ourselves in a world that has gone wild with portion control and too many messages to EAT, EAT, EAT! When I watch TV now, it is jaw dropping how much CRAP is advertised. Junk food, fast food, pizza, after school Snacks for kids that are NOT healthy. Not to mention noticing the shear number of restaurants on every corner. Just shameful. My weakness is that I love flavors and textures. I love well made organic foods with exotic ingredients. I love when summer veggies are in season and berries abound! But I just hope I'll appreciate smaller amounts of those flavors in the future. In 2003, I was like you. I was competing in relay triathlons and going out dancing every weekend. My life revolved around getting on the bike, running, hiking, kayaking, going to the gym. It feels like a dream sometimes that I was ever that way. But you can get it back! Just in the past three weeks I've become addicted to walking. I'm increasing my time every week and feeling so good all over. I'm sleeping better than before, and it feeds my brain to make smart choices all day. Pretty soon I'm breaking out the bike again, and planning a hiking/camping trip to Yosemite this June. My husband and I LOVE motorcycle racing and we plan to ride his bike there! I haven't been able to comfortably fit on the back in YEARS. I highly recommend you find a way to get exercise back into your life. It is so addictive! And it does make you happy, gives you time to focus on yourself and remember why you started this journey last summer. Celebrate your new found body and take it out of a spin! -
Day two of a liquid diet completed
Seagull replied to Jellybean55's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I drank Water and slim fast shakes 3x a day and had vegetables for dinner. Less than a week in, I was only eating a 1/2 cup of vegetables because I was so sick of them. Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App -

Milk of Magnesia was a life saver for me after surgery. Amazon 13 is correct, stay close to a bathroom just in case. Sometimes it can work very fast even though the bottle says otherwise! When was your surgery? -
Holy Heartburn!
smallgirlsxthree replied to blackanese25's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I have heartburn so bad and I have forever, so I feel your pain! You need to get on a medicine from your dr to help control it, but until then you can take Mylanta or chew Tums (I get the Smoothies ones-tastes and feels better). They will both help at least lessen your symptoms. I was in major pain for a while after my sleeve because my stomach wasn't emptying out very fast due to swelling, so everything was just sitting there and feeling like it was frying my chest! Try to stay upright for a while after you eat/drink and let your stomach empty out before you lay down too, that might help. Good luck!! -
Remember 50 off is better then 50 on!!! Not everyone drops it fast, you read it all over the board. I think your doing great because you are heading in a better direction then if you were doing nothing! You are on a journey to a better life! Your doing great <Thumbs up>

I feel like I am a slow loser!
Misty_eyes replied to usmcmorninngstar@yahoo.com's topic in Weight Loss Surgery Success Stories
I agree! the scale stopped moving for me and i'm 7weeks out, i lost fast the first 3 weeks and its the same weight for me now. But all my clothes are loose, i get teased at work I need to get new ones. I bought my first size Large top, and I used to wear 2xl. I can fit 14/16 and i used to wear 20 pants. So I guess, the weighing scale doesn't really tell the whole story. Although it would be nice to see it go down, ill take non scale victories too! -
It depends on so many factors that it is hard to say for each person in particular. It depends on if you have insurance and what type or whether you are self pay. It depends on what your particular surgeon requires for clearances from your other doctors and if you have specific medical conditions that you have to get clearance for. For instance in my case, I have a heart condition and had to go to my cardio surgeon and get clearance from him. It depends on if your surgeon requires a sleep study. Some do, some don't. Mine didn't. It depends on how fast you get clearance from your PCP and any specialists you need and how fast you can get the sleep study completed if required. And again, if you are planning to use insurance, they can be a big hold up. Some require a six month diet plan, etc. So, Congrats on your first step and just keep plugging along with whatever the surgeon tells you to do. Hopefully, it will not take too long for you and Good Luck.

Anyone else with a Feb 1st date?
prettyCali916 replied to prettyCali916's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Wow - they'll postpone? Mine gave paperwork that said you have to lose and we will check before we schedule. They didn't check. I haven't gained - I've lost like 7; not checking again until day of. But that's so drastic to postpone! Good luck! Why don't you just start early? Might as well lol! That's what they said and they said in the seminar that they have had to enforce it before. Could have been a scare tactic to keep people from going on a binge up until the day before surgery. I was going to just start my liquids now but I have job interviews this week and I don't want to go in them hungry and irritated and lightheaded. I'm known to get "hangry". Ha! The last one is Wednesday after the my appt with the nurse and I will start the diet Thursday. Lol! I know the feeling! I have a friend who gets hangry and literally says it so I stay away lol. Could be a scare tactic - but you're on the right track. Better safe than sorry on the diet - you'll probably drop quite a few on liquids so you'll be fine. Good luck on your interviews! I hope this week goes by really fast! -
I'm sorry you all had to go through the misery but maybe that is what you needed to do. Remember, this is a work in progress. The band is not magical by itself. We have to do the work. Today was the perfect day for me to read this thread as today I finally get to start mushies. I too have thought for several days that I want to 'eat' something. I realize I will have to be very mindful of what I am doing. I was so looking forward to a scrambled egg this morning but I have a doctor's appointment (for my 10 day old cold/sinus infection) early this morning and I don't have time for the egg and she might want to do fasting blood on me to check out my thyroid so I think I will take a shake and have it afterwards. Thanks to all of you for my resolve. I have the rest of my life to eat.

Carrot, I totally share all of your feelings...and I too can't keep my mind off of food....and find myself watching the food network more than ever. Damn Paula Deen!!! Curses to Emeril!!! One thing I did tonight that made me feel great...my neighbor asked me to come sit on the deck with her. She does not know about me being banded, so she went into the house, and came out and handed me a beer and two slices of Dominos Pizza! I declined both,,,,and came home to cook a chopped onion and a chopped carrot in some chicken broth. This is all of the veg I'm allowed in a day. I pretended it was a chinese won-ton Soup, without the dumplings. I must ahve been starving...it tasted soooo good. I ate nothing else today but a Slim Fast shake (low carb) and a cup of cottage cheese. My liver should be the size of a penny on surgery date! It sure is tough. Sending sympathy, support, and prayers your way!:clap2:

Dolores: I've had a bunch of bad days, but most of the time I eat like a bandster eats. Alot of times if I want frozen yogurt I walk for it. I walk to the store, get a small container, or walk to the shop and get one frozen yogurt. Then, I walk home too. Today I had one piece of pizza - yummmmmmy. However, I ate it too fast and only rented it - pb:( I think that as long as you eat like a bandster most of the time you should do okay. Best wishes. Sue

Advice and encouragement
lizonaplane replied to Candigrl1's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Many people think they are a "slow loser" but in fact they just have unrealistic expectations from shows like My 600 Lb Life, which features people who lose "fast" because they are much bigger than your average WLS patient. You may still be a slow loser; I can't tell how much of your 33 lb weight loss was before surgery, but I lost about 9 lbs on average per month for the first 6 months after surgery, and my surgery center said I was doing great! Try to focus on things you can control, like eating and drinking and exercising the way your surgery center recommended, and don't worry about the scale. You might also focus on how your clothes fit or other "non-scale victories". You might also consider reaching out to your surgery center to make sure you're on track, and consider seeing a bariatric therapist. Good luck! -

Wow...that's really fast. Perhaps your body just isn't ready. Most of us don't get back to solid foods for 4-6 weeks after surgery. -
Back before the band, I started doing weight training. I was serious about it and planned on entering a contest. I worked at it hard for 18 months. I didn't have time or energy to do both when I started. But as I built muscle, I began feeling better, moving better and just getting active. Unfortunately, I didn't lose weight. But I figured 350 pounds of muscle would look better than 350 pounds of fat. That was true. My body shrank and soon I was wearing hand-me-downs from a woman 100 pounds less than me. I was running up and down stairs just for fun. My doctor friend said I was going to be the healthiest fat person in town. Unfortunately, the story has a sad ending. I contracted Epstein Barr, which progressed into Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, soon to be joined by Fibromyalgia. I got sicker by the day until I thought I would die. I put on 100 pounds during this time. Eventually, I became stronger. Fast forward to now, I have tried and tried to get back to weight training, with no success. But the attempts have kept my core strong. I've gone through breast cancer with both chemo and radiation, and a stroke. Because I had lapband surgery, I now weigh 280, and hope to lose 30 - 50 more pounds. I'm still huge, but I've lost 160 pounds. Once again, I am too weak from the stroke to do carsio, but I am trying to do a bit of weightlifting. I'm starting slowly, and I know If I keep it up, the cardio will follow, just like it did before. Once the muscle is built, it is just so much fun to use it.

Super happy but a bit confused
Tami10 replied to Tami10's topic in Weight Loss Surgery Success Stories
I refuse to spend a money on clothes because I'm changing sizes so fast. Old navy and target are as expensive as I get and only on sale walmart mostly. But maybe the size thing is there too along with the extra skin and my tummy being squishier. Sent from my SM-A716U using BariatricPal mobile app -
I planned meals before considering WLS. It helps make sure a meal is on the table rather than fast food after work. I keep a spiral bound notebook and write a header for each day - and then I simply fill in a meal under each header. Now that I'm mindful, the 'meal' is just a protein and veggie and how I intend to cook. I love doing it this way, since I can make my grocery list from the menu and everything is on hand when it's time to cook. I can leave it on the counter - the fam can peek at it to see what's for dinner and even start prepping with out you. If you find it overwhelming, try doing it just for dinners. Repeat your breakfasts and lunches to simplify things. If you get stuck on planning, you can flip through your notebook and view previous weeks for inspiration. This week,my meal plan looks like this: Sunday: Taco Salad (no tortillas, dairy or cheese for me); Monday: Vegetable beef soup; Tuesday: Zucchini and meatballs with marinara; Weds: Lettuce wraps with ground turkey & cucumber salad; Weds: Grilled steak & asparagus. It doesn't have to be complicated

I eat throughout the day, meals and/or snacks. I just started tracking (I'm 3 months out) and I go more by calories. I agree with ms.k that I eat when I'm hungry. It's best for me to eat several times per day than wait until meal time and be starving because that is when I eat too fast/too much and I'm miseralbe. If I eat every 3 hours, that seems to work for me. I have that "emply stomach" feeling by then but I'm not starving. One thing I've noticed is that I'm not focussed on meal time now. What I mean: before the surgery, if it was meal time, I would eat (hungry or not) because I just wanted to eat. It was never a question of hungry or not, I always wanted to eat (so I guess I always felt hungry, lol). I didn't really know what hungry felt like anymore, if that makes sense because I never really listened to my body. The sleeve has changed that. Now I eat when I need to eat, meal time or not. I'm not constantly looking at the clock counting down the minutes till the next meal so I have a reason to eat. If my family is hungry at dinner time, I make them dinner, but I may not be hungry then. I may eat later. That has been the biggest revelation to me - eating when I'm truly hungry and actually being able to identify that feeling!

I'm 3 1/2 years out and still to this day, if I don't watch very carefully what I eat and HOW I eat (especially things like dense chicken breast, cornbread, dense stuff) I will inverably wind up getting the "slimes" and HOPEFULLY, (yes, I mean that) throwing it up because it is sheer misery otherwise! I have always eaten very fast and still dont take enough time and slowly eat. Sliming is the worst and as Mistysj said, it can be not only sliming but really feel sick like shaky, flushed, sweaty. Trust me - slow down - dont eat too fast - follow your program and it's all much better!

My pre op allowed lite Soup. If you can find a unflavored Protein powered you can mix into that to help you get your protein in. I found to if I drank my Protein shake fast it would fill me up. The first few days were the hardest just stick with it. Also you might try drinking something warm or hot. Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App

Able to eat more than I should
I AM NOT MY SIZE replied to I AM NOT MY SIZE's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Junior Guru, thank you for asking these questions. I have to answer no to some of them. I eat my meals too fast and I take my liquid in too soon after or before I eat. I have some changes to make in order for me to see the progress I want. Since I made this post I have been doing better. I can still do better and will do better. I am down 50 pounds since my surgery in September. Thank you, everyone, for responding. Your advice is well taken and appreciated. -
