Help me understand fruit and smoothies

A list of low carb keto friendly fruits... Berries are your friend! I don't eat fruit except strawberries. I am not a huge fruit person, never have been. I'd rather eat veggies, you can eat large amounts for very few calories. i am not the sweet tooth type, but I like a strawberry now and then.
  2. Not only is @@Dub a handsome devil, he is well spoken too. He really nailed it on the head. I love cooking so much more that I am less attached to food. It is more art to me than aything. I don't cook for a family, I spend most of my time experimenting with low carb, keto, and paleo recipes. My goal is to replace most things I like with healthy options. It is really fun and taps into my inner scientist. It is hard to really explain how your relationship with food changes. I would have never believed this would be how i feel.

Why do people bash weight loss surgery?

@@Madea61 it did for me. I will admit, I was never on insulin and controlled with pills. I could control my sugar well eating keto, before surgery but it was too hard to maintain and I still had to watch portions. It is a lot easier to eat properly with the sleeve.

    10th Month: How many calories?

@@Munecagirl85 I have a lot of muscle mass and I want to keep it and I want my hair to grow, so I increased my Protein. I eat 4 to 5 times a day and I try to get 20g of protein or more whenever I eat. Also once i got past 6 months, I had an appetite and I didn't have one at all before. I need the protein so I am satisfied and not hungry. I eat Keto also, but I rarely eat enough fat, its hard to get the fat in, since I mostly eat lean Proteins to get my protein in without eating too many calories. I like Keto but it is a hard balance with a limited amount of calories to work with.

    Anyone struggling?

Hey BabyNewYear, I'm also almost 4 months and doing great. What a fantastic experience I've been having all the way! Some things haven't changed: I still don't feel when I need to stop eating, so I pretty much overeat many times because my brain doesn't want to stop, so at least once a week I feel extremely sick because of course our stomachs can't handle the amount of food. As I mentioned you before I stopped losing weight after week 5, so I have decided to start a lchf/keto/banting lifestyle which is a lifestyle based on very low carbs, moderate Protein and high in fat; why this approach? I'm barely hungry when I eat fat, it allows me to fulfil my protein requirements and sugars (carbs) is what gave me the metabolic syndrome, weight gain and led me to surgery. I'm really happy with this approach and I really honestly hope that I can follow this the rest of my life. Many ask about my sugar and cholesterol levels with this diet and all of them are back to normal. I'm down 17 kg (37lbs 8oz or 2 stones 9.5lbs ) from 76 kg (167lbs 9oz or 11 stones 13.55lbs) to 59kg (130lbs 1oz or 9 stones 4 lbs) and I'm only 4 kg (8lbs 13 oz or 8.8 lbs) from my goal weight. Lately I've been losing between 0.5kg or less per week (around one pound or less). None of my clothes, underwear nor shoes fit. I've lost my ass, it's totally flat so sitting is painful because I'm sitting on my hips and training has it's ups and downs because I lost more weight from my right side of my body so my sneakers are loser on one side and I hurt my right knee quit often. I'm also trying to become stronger with weight lifting so that I can continue to lose fat. My stomach is still big compared to the rest of my body, but I can start seeing my neck, hands and hip bones. Lose skin on my ass, boobs and upper arms. hair loss, it's bad... but I've seen worst cases on instagram, so I still feel lucky about this, but there is hair absolutely EVERYWHERE! I'm taking Biotin for this. What an amazing journey!!! Looking forward to the next update! Cheers!

anyone following ketogenic lifestyle after WLS?

We talked about it here http://www.bariatricpal.com/topic/360260-ketogenic-diet/ I eat Keto. It is nice to follow post-op. It is hard to get the fats in really. I keep my carbs low easily and my Protein goals I meet daily. If I fall short on fat, it isn't the end of the world.

    Who Are You?

Hi everyone! My name is Jessica (despite my username, story for another time). I am 25 years old, married for 3 years. We have a 2 year old daughter who is just the light of my life. Currently at my all-time high weight of a shocking 317. Just beginning the Sleeve process and anxiously awaiting the day I can put my very own weight-loss ticker in my signature! I am a voracious reader. I plow through anywhere from 10-15 full novels every month and I have several books/series that I re-read every year. Reading is by far my favorite indoor past-time. I also love adult coloring books. I am not sure why but there is something very calming and therapeutic about it. I also am an avid gardener. The soil is a nasty clay where I live now, so I garden in big pots. This year I have 4 varieties of heirloom tomatoes, various squash, Brussels sprouts, broccoli, lettuce, potatoes, and various herbs. They are all growing beautifully and I am a happy girl! I enjoy swimming, running (before I destroyed my knees), and cooking. I don't like to toot my own horn, but my husband will tell you I am an incredible cook. I am currently a call center supervisor for a major financial institution. My department helps customer's get home equity loans. Definitely not my dream job, but it pays the bills. I hope to someday go back to school and get my degree in animal medicine. I also have self employment aspirations. I am currently in the patent process for home-made shampoos, conditioners, soaps etc. I can't share my recipe's but if you would like a free sample just send me a message! I am a big dog person, but ironically all I have is a cat (whom I suspect is part demon) and several fish. Hubby doesn't want dogs I used to have a flock of over 100 chickens. Believe it or not I could tell them all apart and they all had their own names. Fun fact: farm fresh chicken and eggs taste NOTHING like what you buy from the store. Nothing. If you haven't ever had it, you haven't lived. I like to doll myself up (not so much since I have gotten so ... we'll call it jolly, yeah jolly), but I am still not afraid to get dirty. I love camping, fishing, hunting, and just being outdoors. I have no qualms about gutting fish, slaughtering livestock (sorry vegans, they lived happy lives I promise), and getting mud under my nails. I decided to sleeve myself after exhausting every other option available to me. I have struggled all my life with weight. Over the years I have tried just about everything weight loss trick there is, from Slim Fast, to Weight Watchers, to keto diets, to calorie restriction, to various pills of questionable safety, not to mention gym memberships, and other special weight loss exercise programs. Sometimes I'd lose a little, sometimes I would lose a lot, but in the end I gained it all back and then some. I have had mixed reactions from my loved ones. Most are concerned that I am so young, and the ones who have never struggled with weight seem to believe that I just haven't ever tried hard enough. There is definitely a stigma out there that says that this is the easy way out. But truthfully, if my research is any indication, this is going to be the hardest thing I have ever done. Not an easy way out at all. I am currently in the beginning stages, and looking at a surgery in August some time. Looking forward to a happier healthier me!

    Snacking

Sorry forgot to specify what kind of snacking, but I'm on keto ( lchf) and I still snack a lot even tho it's low carb they all add up

    Snacking

How do I stop snacking!!!! This is a really bad habit, I eat so many times in a day that my calories add up like a person w/o surgery!! I've been stalled at 74.5 kgs for about 2 months now and I really want to get to my 70-65 goal weight. P.S I'm on a low carb diet, ( keto) and I still snack a lot on nuts, turkey wraps, cheese slices, atkin bars. Although it's low carb it adds up calorie wise.
  14. So I've been trying to get more Protein into my system and get closer to the surgery diet as I can while I wait to start the process. I'm on the keto diet but I'm having problems getting my protein in. Which one of these 3 would you guys choose? I know everyone loves the Premier Protein ones but it bothers me that they have more carbs in them than I've seen others contain. Nature's Best Perfect Zero Carb Isopure GNC Pro Performance 100% Whey Protein Premier Protein Whey Protein I'm probably making this harder than I need to but after being so unhealthy for so long I want to make sure I'm getting as many nutrients as I can the best way that I can.
  15. Been looking for a sleever who follows a ketogenic diet coz from what I read so far I got overwhelmed by its complexity - even though my carb addiction tells me keto is my only way out of this mess. How r u doing so far? How are the macros especially on the Protein side? Would u recommend it for ppl who had done vsg? Any tips on how to get into that lifestyle? Been failing every day for a week now and giving in to my carb cravings every night :/
  16. ** I HAVE NOT BEEN SLEEVED YET ** I am just researching different types of Protein shakes for post-op. I was on a ketogenic diet which did wonders for me. I relied on Keto Chow as a meal substitute, and I can honestly report that nearly every flavor I tried was delicious. Just like melted milk shakes but the net carbs were under 4 grams per serving. I still have two weeks worth of supply (they are a bit pricey--about $10 a day). Each shake has about 27 grams of protein and is about 400 calories per shake. The only downside I see is that you have to MCT Oil and heavy cream to make it nutritional rounded: that is to say, consuming three shakes met all of your nutritional needs per day. I am not sure if the heavy cream (which adds fat--key to keto) would be a bad thing post-op. Here's the nutritional label for the shakes: (hopefully linking is allowed) https://www.thebairs.net/2015/03/label-all-the-things/ Are these good to go?

High protein, low carb for life?

Low carbing as a lifestyle and not a diet is different. As some other people said, eating Protein first makes you a low carber by default even if you add in carbs at the end, you will get so few you are still low carb. I love low carbing, more specifically Iove eating Keto. I had issues with portion control before surgery so I would fail or stop losing. Now with the restriction, it is easy to stick to. Eating after surgery even though are tracking everything and some thing you don't eat, is not like dieting. It is a completely different thing, and I don't think you can understand the difference until after surgery. Your body and your desires are just different.
  18. In today's world so many people have different eating plans ( clean, paleo, keto, gluten free etc). I had a lunch meeting this weekend and declined the lunch portion. I opened my Protein shake and said no thanks I'm doing lo carb/ hi protein right now. No one thought anything of it. Sent from my XT1565 using the BariatricPal App

    Ketogenic diet

@@JamGuy I use myfitnesspal to track my intake. I've been doing low carb off and on for about 15 years and tracking calories as well, so I'm pretty familiar with the counts on most foods that I eat. What makes it easier for me is that I eat relatively the same things week after week and I keep my foods as clean as possible. I make most things and rarely go out to eat unless they have nutrition info available. Keto is really the only way I'm able to lose. I thought the sleeve would change that, but nope! Although, I find that I'm able to better manage my cravings for carbs and avoid them. I use net carbs, but I don't worry too much about it since I rarely eat "non-keto" foods. Sometimes my carb intake will be a little higher from things like baby carrots, but again, I don't worry about it much.
  20. @@Cervidae I got a dog. It has helped me so much with my stress and isolation from living and working alone. The dog is the best comfort available. I realize everyone can't afford or wants to take care of a dog. I comfort myself right now by shopping. It isn't always about purchasing items, it is more about trying on clothes, seeing what I can wear and also seeing myself in a different environment. Even though there are mirrors and full length mirrors all over my house, I find that I can see my changes better outside the house and trying on entirely new clothes. That helps me stick to plan and also validates my struggles with head hunger. Doing your nails, deep conditioning your hair. Okay on to food. Comforting myself with food, is something I worked through before surgery, before I even considered surgery. I gave up sugar, I gave up alcohol. I learned to work through my problems and I always removed a lot of stress from my life. Now to be real, I Keto. That is more comforting than most diets. Fats satisfy a lot of needs. Low carb and low fat is just fail to me, and it doesn't seem to satisfy anything. So I have healthy fats, very few carbs and meet my Protein goals. That is satisfying and comforting to me every day. My food is high quality and delicious. I had filet mignon for almost a week straight, at 4 oz at a time, it is affordable yet still decadent.Totally on plan, totally delicious. I am savory kind of person. I would rather have fried chicken or fried fish than chocolate or any kind of sweet. That being said, it is kind of easier to get "treat" like foods that are sweets since most people are sugar fiends. I think that if sweets are your trigger then you should be really careful. I can eat these items and not care about them. They are mainly convenience more than comfort. Protein Brownies. Looking they are protein brownies and they taste like protein brownies, but they do taste good. They also aren't cheap, so you might not want one every day. Found on instagram, a real life saver, added bonus, they are moderately filling. http://www.eatmeguiltfree.com/ Protein Peanut Butter The chocolate is delicious. https://wildfriendsfoods.com/protein_plus/ Quest Bars Low carb cheesecake (just google a recipe. I get these at Trader Joes for $1.99 or 2.99 a bar, I forget the price. cheaper than Lily's I have one square at a time as a snack http://www.amazon.com/Simply-Lite-Chocolate-Cacao-3-Ounce/dp/B0049UDYHI These from trader joe's, fi you are going to buy them, weigh/measure out all the servings and put them in individual baggies as soon as you get it home. Only take one serving at a time. The calories are high per serving for those of us on 1000 calories or so a day so plan accordingly. I stopped buying them because they aren't worth the calories to me, but they aren't a terrible option. http://i.imgur.com/jWCaYT1.jpg Again I am going to state I can eat this things because sweets are not a trigger for me. If they are for you, don't do it. Food though is fuel, not a comfort device. We all need to work past seeing food as a comfort. It doesn't even work post surgery at least for me. Being full is super uncomfortable, it isn't soothing, it doesn't make me numb or sleepy, just miserable. Cooking a complicated keto or paleo recipe is soothing to me. It takes me out of my own thoughts and I have to focus on what I am doing. I find that relaxing. Recipe sites.. http://www.ibreatheimhungry.com/ http://www.ruled.me/ http://cavemanketo.com/ https://ketodietapp.com/Blog I am not familiar with what RNY people can eat so if all of these are things you can't tolerate. I'm sorry.

Keeping your surgery a secret - is it possible?

4 people know I had surgery, all of them live out of state and none of them even live in the same state together. It is easy to keep your surgery a secret. I have lost almost 100lbs since surgery and over 100lbs from my high weight. My current weight and BMI is the same as what some people start at is and it may seem high but "I carry my weight well", for whatever that is worth. The difference in how I look is massive. I have lost 6 dress sizes, like 15 inches off my lower abdomen, and a lot of other changes. People that see me often, people in my complex, employees of places I frequent have complimented my weight loss. The people in my complex know that I walk 2-3 times a day. Walking the whole complex is around a mile. They see me all the time. They are probably attributing my weight loss to that. People that know me, and don't know I have had surgery, know that I keto. They know I am strict about it and in my home there are no bad carbs. I live a lifestyle that matches weight loss. Unlike what a lot of people that feel like everyone should shout their WLS surgery from the roof tops think. You can easily keep your surgery a secret. People will not be curious or suspect anything out of the ordinary if you live a lifestyle that matches weight loss. Also, to most people WLS is an abstract thought. They haven't experienced it, or seen it up close and if they have it is usually the bad example. If you are going it the right way, you don't draw attention to yourself. I do think the only way to keep it a secret is to not tell anyone. If you tell a relative or a co-worker there is nothing to stop them from telling another person they don't think will tell.
  22. @@Megall9 It is hard to realize that you are the fatter fat friend to the fat friend. LOL My friend is stuggling with that right now I think. She doesn't say much right now, but I used to have a good 100 plus pounds on her and I am taller than her. Now that I have lost weight I am close to her size if not smaller than her right now even though I weigh a little more than her. Last time we went shopping I was just one or 2 sizes larger than her, I could tell she was uncomfortable but to her credit she tried to hide it. When you know someone a long time, they can't hide much. She doesn't know I had surgery though, she thinks it is just keto and working out, I am sure after the next 20lbs or so she is going to have questions.

    Ketogenic diet

I do and I use this calculator. http://keto-calculator.ankerl.com/ I had my resting metabolic rate tested recently so that is accurate and I changed mine from the default, but the default was close, within 100 calories. I had a DEXA scan so I also know my exact fat percentage. If you don't know you can let it guess for you. I use the lowest fat goal allowed. I don't always meet it. My goal is to meet my Protein goal and to not go over my carb goal. My carb goal is net carbs. I easily stay under the carb goal even not using net carbs. Before someone comes in talking about net carbs are BS, net carbs are the standard in Europe, the US is behind on everything because of lobbyists, but that is a different topic. Some days I go over 750 calories, I try to stay under 850.
