    diabetes meds after surgery?

I was on 2000mg metformin and 1.2 ml of Victoza and I haven't taken any since that day before my surgery. My bs are completely normal. I haven't had any bs above 110 and my fasting bs is almost always in the 80's. I have read that this happens more often for people that were diabetic less than 5 years and not on insulin. However any reduction in meds would be great.
  2. I had Blue Cross/Blue Shield of Texas and wasn't required to undergo a supervised weight loss program during the pre-approval process. My friend had a different BC/BS health plan and underwent the 6-month supervised weight loss visits. She was not required to lose weight; however, she had to have 6 documented visits with a physician, nurse practitioner or PA that recorded her weight. She actually gained weight during the process. She pre-qualified for the sleeve at 218 pounds and ended up at 231 pounds a week before surgery. She lost 7 pounds on the pre-op diet and weighed 224 on surgery day.
  3. I can relate.. nearly one year out and 95 lbs gone. People say you look great, you don't need to lose anymore. Someone told me the other day, "wow you are really skinny now", I don't even know how to reply, I just say thanks but still think I'm the fat girl. My mom told me that I don't see myself like I am now Bc I saw myself much bigger for so long.

    Diabetes and liquid diet

I am not nor have I ever been on insulin, but I am a type 2 diabetic. I stopped my medication the night before surgery to prevent lows. My sugar actually went high the first night probably due to the stress of surgery. The second night my bs went low and I had to drink some juice to bring it up. So I would definitely be talking to your doctor to find out how to manage your bs during theses changes with your diet.

    Breaking down

Stay strong ! Im doing the optifast pre liquid diet as well .. the first 3 days were the worst !!! But if you make it through those then your good ! Ive been doing it since June 5th and my surgery is July 3rd so im on it for almost a month . Ive lost 10 pounds so far . But i slipped a few times . But if your going to slip make sure its not with like french fries or something .. i had a piece of grilled chicken the 4th day bc my headache was horrible and it definitely helped. Whenever i feel like i cant do i look at instagram pages of people who have done this surgery and their success it really helps or I distract myself with like a computer game or a game on my phone something to keep me busy . I also have been trying to stay outside alot and not in the house with a kitchen full of food. Its hard but youll make it !!! Add me on Instagram we can follow each others journeys ! 3 months post op - discouraged

Every 3 hours sounds easier then it is turning out to be ☹️ Everyone suggests the good fats, I use Olive Oil when cooking but don't eat nuts nor nut butters. I am not a fan of anything but peanut butter and I haven't allowed myself to have it yet. (I have a tendency of over eating it). I get enough protein bc that is mostly all I eat.
  7. Lovenox injections are the blood clot preventative, but the only reason I will be on them post op is bc I have had a PE ( pulmonary Embolism) last October from shoulder surgery. I have never heard anything about a gallstone preventative. I hope this helps some[emoji3] My surgery is 6/21/17, next Wednesday (RNY)

    VSG & autoimmune diseases?

I have MS! My initial presentation was very unusual in that I went deaf, so it took some time to diagnose (2012). As a result, I suffer from vertigo and nausea from my active lesion. I decided to go on medication last year after I started to get more physical symptoms, though thankfully my clinical symptoms have remained stable. (MS is apparently weird like that according to my neurologists). Exercise is difficult for me due to the fact that a) I fatigue more quickly than I used to b)I can have significant problems with my balance c) I am carrying extra weight gained through a high risk pregnancy that saw me hospitalised, fed an extremely high calorie diet and hooked up to drips in order TO gain weight (I was very ill and nearly lost my baby) and d) a combination of steroid medications I have had to take for a bunch of symptoms to do with MS (not my interferons) and for depression and anxiety So my eating habits are weird. I find it difficult to eat most of the time because I feel nauseated. This means I need to take lots of vitamins to avoid malnutrition. I would generally avoid food if possible, but have a lovely husband who makes sure I eat. However, when I am NOT feeling nauseated, I will eat whatever I like! It's ridiculous. I don't think that in my life I've ever had a sweet tooth (I'm a savoury fiend), yet I will crave something like chocolate and must eat it. And as for the food I DO like; shut the gate. I'm like the Netflix and no chill of food if I feel well! Obviously, whenever this happens, I get extremely sick. But it's ridiculous. My body has gone into some kind of starvation mode and just wants to feed itself. Anyway, after lots of tests, and long consultations with all of my specialists I'm going in for a sleeve. The hope is that with the pre-op diet, the new way of eating, the weight loss relieving some of the pressure on my body that my 'metabolism' for want of a better word, will be able to reset. That I will be able to stick to better patterns of eating - fueling my body correctly and helping it to combat this disorder. Im feeling hopeful. I see this as an opportunity to reset and give myself a better chance to make my body stronger and more healthy despite whatever little brain farts it has along the way to make it not as reliable into the future as it should be.
  9. I want to be a fed but a different branch. I'm desperately hoping the surgery will help fix the health problems holding me back so I can pass the physical exam. It's the only thing I can see myself doing and I'm too young to settle.

    TPN

There must be some underlying cause as to why you needed to be fed intravenously in the first place. Still, sorry to hear about that.. I've never heard of this before your post, it seems extremely rare if caused by the surgery. Apparently one of the side effects of this is liver disease, so I hope they have you on some type of anti-fibrotic medication to slow the progression into cirrhosis -- I heard some are coming down the line. Initially I was going to be involved in trials in a few years but my liver has healed substantially making it moot.

    Sick of being sick!

Yesterday I had my 20 something abdominal surgery after I had a botched gastric bypass in 2003. I have I port implanted in my chest to keep me hydrated and fr TPN ( food ) and other medications that basically keep me alive. I spent 3 months in hospice 5yrs ago and now heading back down that path! The fed say I'm out of options. Anyone else going through something like this!?!

    Burning Reflux - Horrible

I can relate to the photo you posted. Right after surgery I wanted to throw up all the time just bc of the heartburn! My dr told me to do over the counter nexium but if it continues passed a month they would give an RX. THANKFULLY it's gone away. Call and ask the dr for omeprazole.

    Holy Dumping Syndrome, Batman!

I have to agree with you, I didn't post until just recently bc if felt like people were very judgements when others are just being honest and/or looking for advice/support. I believe that everyone will have a different journey and a different experience, we can make great supports for each other but no one should be making anyone feel small or degraded. Feel proud of yourself for making a difference in your own life and 17lbs it's a great accomplishment!! The puréed food stage was very hard for me as well...I lived off soup, refried beans, and protein drinks!!

    NSV happy!!!

You are doing great! Don't let your NUT's attitude burst your bubble. I think they act like that bc they think they are "motivating" you when really its discouraging! Every person who goes through this journey will loose at their own pace and I think your doing great! When I started my journey 3 months ago I was in a size 22/24 and 2xl or 3xl tops. As I sit here typing I am wearing a junior size 16 shirts and a medium shirt!! Everyone's progress will be different but in the end as long as your headed in the right direction your in the right track!! Good luck and great job!!!

TSA body scan anomaly after surgery

Ugh, I am flying from AZ to Chi in exactly one month, this isn't something I am looking forward to dealing with at the airport. I am 3 days shy of my 3 months post op and only have a little saggy skin in the lower belly area...trying to keep myself fit while I loose the weight bc I'm traveling for my wedding!! Let's hope I can make it through the TSA checks!!

Do you HAVE to follow a low carb diet?

This is what I have been hearing for YEARS! So it's what I feel most comfortable eating. Granted, I'm pre-op but health is health. All these low fat or sugar free items are just loaded with junk chemicals. When I'm working out like crazy, and trust me I go HARD, I eat how you described. I'm all about wholesome and balanced. I'm glad to hear someone say that bc that way is the only way I feel comfortable eating FOR THE REST OF MY LIFE
  19. So, i guess a food journal, scales, bs , and how ifeel over a longer time will sorta dictate my path. Avoiding processed carbs #1 regardless.

    Sushi

I had sashimi yesterday bc I'm not allowed carbs for a few more months and it was wonderful.

    Bypass Vs. Sleeve?

Sleeve to rny here bc I suffered bad gerd n several hiatel hernias since I got sleeved in 2011. I only lost 50 pounds with it originally also and that took year. I'm down 25 since may 1 so fingers crossed rny has better results. Research both options, attend meetings and ask questions...educate yourself on both n do the one u want and the one recommended by an excellent surgeon. This is your life so do for you!!!! Good luck

HELP! BCBS 6 Month Nutrition Requirement

I have BC Anthem and am also doing the 6 months. At first I was told it wasn't required and then I got a call from my coordinator and said it was. I was really bummed but then just accepted it, got my head right and am going to my 4th appointment in a few days. I scheduled all of my appointments in he beginning and made them a priority! It has really helped me make gradual changes and I think it is going to make me successful in he long run. I make one change a month that is going to me mandatory after surgery. You can do it! The insurance company does this to make sure you are committed and will be successful- prove that you can!

    opinions on fruit?

This is true, but to a diabetics body sugar is sugar and it doesn't matter where it comes from. Fruit is natures candy. I love fruit, but I have to be really careful with it. I eat a small portion of blue berries or strawberries, once in a while as these have the least effect on my bs.
  24. Bs can be a tricky thing. See your md that manages your bs and review your food logs with them. Stress, surgery, healing, hormones, all play into bs management.
  25. It is definitely challenging when you are a diabetic and have limited food choices. What medications were you taking before surgery? My doctor told me not everyone is able to stop their medications after surgery. Some will still need them to keep bs controlled. I hope this isn't the case for you.
