  1. The day of for me sucked because I was told my surgery would be first and it was actually not until 10! So I was up very early 4:30 am to be exact since I was told to be there at 5:30! Beyond that it went without any problems. After the surgery I slept forever! I wasn't in a ton of pain but I did hit my pain button just in anticipation. In fact even if it was out of my hand I found it and was hitting it excessively the nurse kept coming in! I told her it wasn't in my hand and it was up by my head and I was totally knocked out. So I was in post op for a while because they ad to wait for a patient to leave in order to get me into a room. Luckily after that wait I got a private room! I would suggest to bring your own pillow whether you are staying over night or not. I slept with my pillow on my belly and continue to because I have animals who walk on me at night! And on the way home you can put the pillow between you and you seatbelt for cushion since it may rub on your sutures. I did nothing but watch tv had I brought anything else I wouldn't have used it. I found sitting up at a right angle was painful until the second day. Ask for your hand to be numbed when you get your IV it makes it more comfortable. But I slept in fact the first few days thats all I did. I got up and walked but beyond that I slept!

this just isn't working for me

DON'T GIVE UP!!! I haven't lost much either and was banded a month after you. If you are too tight then go to your dr and get a small unfill. Get off the diet pills!!!! They may be changing how your body is reacting to food and making it more difficult to eat. Drink shakes, they will go down just as easy as the slider foods you are eating. Try pudding with Protein powder mixed in, or cream of chicken soup. Puree it if the little bits of chicken are bothering you. Kick the exercise up by 10 minutes a day, then increase it again in 2 weeks, This is what I'm trying right now. You CAN do this!!! You chose the band knowing that it would be hard work, you believed in yourself then, do it again!!!!! You are wise to be on the boards here asking for encouragement and help. There are many people who can help!! PM me if you want to chat more about it. Just don't give up!

    Hair Lost

hair loss generally starts a few months after surgery. About 3 months seems to be really common. Sometimes less, not too often more. How long it lasts varies greatly. When I had my lapband it lasted about 6 weeks (the worst part), and about 8 - 10 weeks total. It was over 6 years ago so I'm getting sketchy on the details. It is primarily a nutritional thing. There are no set correlations to surgery, though some people do have that reaction. There are people who will lose hair if they have anesthesia, regardless of surgery or not. In my case I have had: Lapband surgery - lost hair significantly. Gall bladder removed - no hair loss at all. Lapband removed - no hair lost at all. Sleeve - no hair loss yet, but I'm still a pup... it's coming, I have full confidence. The only time I lost hair has been when it coincided with extreme changes to intake/nutrition. I see this pattern most of the time. There's no research indicating that Biotin supplements help (or hurt) with hairloss from bariatrics. That doesn't mean don't take it, it just means take it with the understanding that you might be disappointed. It could be that it helps, but it could also be that the hairloss had run its course and was ready to stop anyway. I'd love to see some actual research done on this (and Nioxin) because the bariatric community is probably keeping those markets alive. The best result I've seen personally was a girl who got really hairy arms, but continued to lose her head hair.
  4. Afternoon all, I'm half way to the process needed to get the importantly needed surgery. Monday, I met with my primary care physician so that she could write a letter of recommendation to the surgeon, which she happily did. She also ordered the labs that my surgeon requested be completed. I just received the results of some of the fasting labs I had drawn this moring. I can't believe some of the numbers! I am so upset with myself for allowing myself to get to this point. Sorry, I guess this is a pitty party post. I just have to get this out. I know that, yes, I'm over weight (or as my chart says morbidly obese) but these labs and recently changes in my body are showing me (although I had been ignoring them) that I have an issue with food. I know what to eat and how much to eat but I choice to ignore it because I like food. I know I could chose better food options like an apple over chips but sad thing is I like them both and usually end up eating the apple AND the chips. My surgeon is requiring that I lose 10 pounds. I know it's not a lot but I haven't been able to lose 5 pounds. I am so ready for a lifestyle change that I am forced to abide by. As of tomorrow, I have decided to start to drink Protein shakes regularly to substitute a few meals for the week. We'll see how that goes. I'm wondering how many folks who've had this surgery end up having some sort of therapy for "compulsive eating?" I didn't think I was a food addict or anything, even with all the indulging but now I'm wondering if maybe I am. Anyhow, thanks for listening. I know things will get better. Those labs just through me. Shari
  5. Hello :-) As you know Protein and Water are key! I was sleeved October 7th 2013 and am three months post op as well. I am down over 85 pounds. Keep in mind men lose faster then women. I have stuck with one Protein Shake a day called VI which is a powder that is like a vanilla cake mix, mix it with two tablespoons of Peanut Butter and a glass of milk, bam over 40 grams of protein. When you eat remember, protein first. Don't drink a half hour before or after meals. I use the most basic exercise which is a Ab Twister Pro and you can do it sitting and it minimal effort. Amazing! Men's lose fast then women, but I've given people this advice and they have been very successful. My program count two things when looking at labels, protein and sugars, anything you have keep under 10 grams of sugar. It's been a true success for me. Hope this helps you! Best of luck and please keep updating!
  6. Good Evening all, I was told on Wednesday evening i am to have my sleeve on the 3rd of January, this caught me completely cold as ive been waiting that long. I immediately started my pre op diet and in 4 days have lost 7 pounds which is crazy. Obviously we have Christmas coming up and well...my 30th birthday (new years eve). Now I get the deal with alcohol but how long before surgery should i stop ? For the record i haven't had a drop for 7 days now but i wouldn't mind a couple of drinks at Christmas and here or there, not so bothered about my birthday as i appreciate its very close to my op day....would this be an issue ? I wouldn't drink 8 days before surgery however i havent had direction on this, i see my nutritionist on Wednesday :/. In regards to my pre op diet, at the moment it consists of this daily : Breakfast : Meal Replacement shake, low carb, high Protein lunch : Same again however i may add half a chicken breast for bulk Dinner: Tonight i have chicken breast and stir fry, tiny tiny tiny bit of mint sauce Obvs i am having sugar free fluids (mainly Water but pepsi max every now and then) Does this seem ok ? For what its worth, im 6ft tall, male and im weighing in at 19st 10, i hope to be 19st flat for surgery. Not sure If this makes any difference, figured id put it. p.s on a last note, i was so against this surgery yesterday but i came on here and m view point has just dramatically changed, i am looking forward to living again, thank you.

    First Fill Today

how did it go for you? I had my first fill today too - it was a piece of cake - i was a bit nervous - but it went very easy - i got 4.5 cc in a 10 cc band - i have the realize band - he numbed the area - and i felt a little prick but nothing even close to pain - then put in the other needle - no pain - i could feel a little pressure when he pulled out air/saline and a little pressure when he put in saline - but again it was just a sensation no discomfort - i drank water no problem - about 20 min later i was on my way to get a milkshake - its a liquid right i felt a little queezy but i was able to drink a small shake (8 oz) - i'm on liquids today and mushies tomorrow - i haven't been hungry - but do feel a bit queezy still - how did it go for you??

    Throwing up

Wow, that stinks! Have you tried prilosec or another PPI? Maybe your surgeon can help you? I've never had that issue but I certainly feel for you! I'm sure you will get better over time but I sense your frustration that at 10 weeks you're still having problems. Good luck!
  9. Hi, I'm 10 days post-op and I've been reading lots of forums like this one through the past week and a half. I've seen folks who are on full liquids like myself saying how long it takes them to finish something (say a 16 oz Protein Drink - one woman said this took half the day). Now, my pace has definitely changed and is still changing post-op (heartburn, fullness, and learning that if I feel uncomfortable in the slightest I should just stop eating), but my ability to finish certain things varies in time. A bowl of lentil Soup took 7 hours to comfortably finish, a thin tomato soup took 3-4, a Protein drink about 45 minutes, and two cups of miso takes about an hour give or take. Water, broth, and sugar-free Jello was straight up easy. Is this a person to person thing? What was this like for you? Am I going too fast? Will this affect the size of my sleeve?

    Help!

Yes, do call your doctor. But for reference I had 2 weeks of liquids, 1 week of mushies then onto solids with caution. You do have a lot of swelling so it took me a good 10 days to even be a little hungry. I still have a little hunger but this works. The diet is for healing and a barrier forms around the band. So PLEASE follow what your doctor says. I ate something one day when I shouldn't have and it scared me that I may have done something. So make sure you heal. Good luck.
  12. I was sleeved 8 days ago. I have always had a high pain tolerance, but not this time. The pain wasn't gas either. I am doing everything I am supposed to be. I was feeling a lot better two days ago and went for a half hour walk (my surgeon had told me to start with 5-10 minutes.). Since then I have had excruciating pain on my left side, right around one of the incision sites. When I move certain ways it feels as though something is tearing inside and/or as if I have major bruising inside. I had a follow up with my PCP yesterday and also spoke with my bariatric coordinator today. They both said that I probably just overdid it on my walk. My question is this. I read about so many people saying that they had no pain at all. Is there anyone out there who has experienced something similar to me? If so, how long did it last?

From the album: Before Surgery Pics

  14. I got a big drink bottle and subtly marked every 100ml on it. It's hard to remember to sip every 5 minutes, so if I haven't drink it all in an hour I'll try to make it up in the next hour, or I'll chug it down on the hour. Fluids go through your stomach easily, and on my Clear and Nourishing Fluids stage I never felt full at all. My dietician says that you can drink 130-150ml at a time (the size of your stomach now) as long as you leave enough time for your stomach to digest it. I tend to leave 10 minutes. So if you think about it that way you can really get quite a lot of Water down if you concentrate on it for an hour. But then again you can also get a lot of Soup down as well.

    Stalled

One year out and stalled out!! Very depressed and stressed! Gained 10# when I had to move in with my mother before the holidays. Life still isn’t normal for me, probably never will be but I’m scared of failing this - seems like I fail at everything! I could use some pointers on what to do in order to get back on track! One year out and I’m only 65# down!! Any advice is much appreciated!

    5cc in a 10cc band

I got banded in 6/09 and just past the 5cc mark w/ my fill this past March (3/10). As of that fill, I've lost 67 pounds. My last 2 fills have brought me decent restriction. I was going 8-10 wks btw fills, but have decided to get a smaller fill every month until I reach my sweetspot (hopefully by the end of this summer). My best friend was banded 3 weeks after I was and she has over 8ccs in her band and has reached her sweetspot! I guess the band is truly not a "one size fits all" when it comes to weightloss, fills, and sweetspots.

I read somewhere someone goes to taco bell and gets a chicken soft taco and a side of refried beans, smooshes up the refried beans with the guts of the soft taco (throwing away the shell). Supposed to be delicious! Can't wait until I can get to mushies. I have to wait until 10/13...grrr

    Vomiting postop

I'm 10 months out and have had issues with vomiting since starting solids. My surgeon says it's likely to go away after a year or so. With meat, I've noticed I have more issues if it's dry at all. I can only handle chicken breast if it's really moist. I store mine with Water so it doesn't dry out. If I eat too much or too fast, I also throw up. Also can't eat anything spicy or fried or anything too sweet. Don't really need those last two anyway but it would be nice to have spicy food, I miss it.
  20. I have made these a few times and I thought it was worth sharing. I was worried that the turkey would be dry, but it wasn't at all! I think the veggies kept them nice and juicy! I have also made this with lean ground beef and it was good too! NOTE: This recipe is REALLY spicy! The second time I made it I only put ONE chipotle pepper (SEEDS REMOVED) in the meat mixture and did not put any chipotle sauce in the ketchup mixture and it was much better to me....especially since we don't drink with our meals. Ingredients For Meat Loaf: 1 small yellow onion, coarsely chopped 1 medium carrot, peeled and coarsely chopped 1 stalk of celery, coarsely chopped 2 canned chipotle peppers in adobo sauce 1 (20-ounce) package JENNIE-O TURKEY STORE® lean ground turkey breast 1/2 cup quick cooking oats 2 egg whites For Topping: 1/4 cup fat free and sugar free ketchup 1 tablespoon chipotle pepper adobo sauce 1 tablespoon brown sugar substitute (such as Splenda® Brand) Cooking Directions Preheat oven to 350°F. In the work bowl of a food processor, combine onion, carrots and celery. Pulse until finely chopped. Add chipotle peppers and pulse until just combined. In a large bowl, combine the ground turkey with the pepper and vegetable mixture. Add egg whites and oats; gently mix until combined. Place about 1/3 cup of the prepared meatloaf mixture into 9 wells of a standard size muffin pan that has been lightly sprayed with nonstick cooking spray. Bake for 20 minutes. Meanwhile, combine all of the topping ingredients in a small bowl; set aside. Remove meat loaves from oven and spoon the topping over each meatloaf. Return meatloaf to the oven and continue to bake for an additional 5-10 minutes or until meatloaf is firm and the internal temperature registers 170°F. Let meatloaf stand for 5 minutes before serving. Makes 9 mini loaves. Dumping syndrome

Dumping sucks honestly. It can last until you get the food out of your system or it can last the entire day. It felt like I was getting my period (I have endometriosis). I get all the symptoms so I just get rid of it and then sleep. The healing process depends on your body. I stayed out of work for 10 days as my job is highly stressful and demands a lot of attention and energy. However, I was energetic when I went back.

How many CCs in your small AP band?

I have 6.5 in my 10 cc AP band. This in 3 fills. I cancelled my last fill because I have great restriction. May have to cancel again!
  23. I didn't weigh myself in the beginning. I was eating so little I didn't worry about it. My 1st doc appt. was 10 days and I had lost 5 lbs. I was thrilled! I had terrible shoulder pain too! I didn't think it would ever go away. I used a heating pad and GasX. Walking also made a big difference. I applaud you for such a long walk, it is such a great way to start exercising. I think it is the nicest part of my new life! I have dogs and they are surely loving it. Keep doing what the docs tell you, the changes will be coming soon!

    Christmas Cookie Contest

Here is a famous New Mexico Christmas cookie... Cant have Christmas without them.. Very Very Fatty.. hehehe BISCOCHITOS 3/4 cups sugar 8 ounces vegetable shortening or lard 1 egg 1.5 teaspoons vanilla 1 teaspoon anise seed 3 cups flour 1.5 teaspoons baking powder 1/2 teaspoon salt Cinnamon Sugar: 1/4 cup sugar 1 tablespoon ground cinnamon Preheat the oven to 325 degrees F. To make the cinnamon sugar, combine the ingredients in a small bowl and set aside. In a large mixing bowl, cream the sugar and shortening together. Add the eggs, vanilla, and anise seed, and continue beating until the mixture is creamy. In another bowl, sift the flour, baking powder, and salt together. Add the dry ingredients to the shortening mixture, a little at a time, and beat to mix well after each addition. Continue until all the flour has been incorporated and a stiff, smooth dough. Do not refrigerate as the dough needs to be warm to hold together. To roll out the Cookies, place a ball of dough about 3 or 4-inches in diameter on a lightly floured surface. Roll out using a very light stroke with a rolling pin. The dough should resemble pie pastry more than cookie dough. Using a sharp knife or cookie cutter, cut the dough into the desired shape. Dust with the cinnamon sugar and place on a lightly oiled baking pan. Bake for 10 to 15 minutes, remove, and cool the cookies on a rack. Yield: 3 to 4 dozen, depending on the shape
  25. My surgeon required a 10% weight loss also so we didn't have to do a 2 week liquid diet. We just had to do one day of full liquids and one day of clear liquids before surgery.
