    That sounds exactly like me. I am 19 days post op and gulping water down..i cannot sip. I eat 4 oz of food at one sitting. I also am a slow loser..only 8 lbs since surgery. I am trying to be intentional with chewing my food slowly but it is hard. I plan to get a scale to watch my portions better but thanks for the encouragement.     Hey there! I am just at a 40 bmi with no co morbidities so my dr actually told me to maintain my weight until surgery. Although I do still have to do the 2 week diet prior and I’m sure I will he said at that point the weight won’t matter. My journey was a little different I did all my pre op testing cardio, pulmonary, nutrition, psych, sleep study and my 12 office visits (per my insurance, Aetna) then I was approved at the end of January. I asked to be scheduled mid April due to some work things I had going on. I now have to do more testing at the hospital on 4/15 an EKG, chest X-ray, Covid test and blood work, I’ll see my primary Mon 4/18 for final clearance and then hospital 4/19. But back to your original question don’t worry too much you will loose in the 2 weeks and be a rockstar!

  5. Hi, Friends! I have my first meeting on Monday! I am a nurse and have had a nursing friend do the sleeve and another do bypass. I've picked both their brains and read so much. On the forum to learn even more. Appreciate everyone's openness to share personal information. I'm conflicted on bypass vs sleeve. I lean to sleeve BUT permanently removing 80% of my stomach kinda freaks me out. Anyone else feel that way? Also r/t acid reflux, I have experienced it but it's usually if I eat late, like after 10 pm. If I don't, then I don't. Would bypass still be preferred for me, if I make sure not to eat late? With the bypass, the thought of rerouting and a stomach the size of a walnut of plum kinda freaks me out! Anyone else feel that way? lol I have an impossible time seeing the light at the end of the tunnel and being slim again and not having knee and foot pain! But oh, sounds so good. It is a journey for sure, and it began months ago but technically, it begins this Monday with my first visit. Oh, boy...

    Chi Franciscan - Tacoma, WA thoughts?

    I had the duodenal switch by Srikanth in 12/2019. By 7/2021 I was dying of malnutrition. I was taking all my vitamins and drinking my protein shakes - not the pre made ones but the ones you make yourself. I was blacking out, collapsing in parking lots, I couldn’t drive because I was blacking out while I was driving, it got so bad my husband had to bath me. I couldn’t be left alone. I had called Srikanth’s office to schedule an appointment to talk about the symptoms when they first started but was told that I needed to call my PCP so I scheduled an appointment with her. I was put on various medications because my BP was typically around 67/52, I had ear problems in addition to blacking out, collapsing, throwing up any food I could get down IF I could get food down. I eventually ended up in the ER and was admitted for a little over 2 months for malnutrition. Sometimes when you have the duodenal switch your stomach doesn’t absorb enough nutrients and your body will start shutting down. It was awful. Now I’m on TPN and have my vitamins, proteins, carbohydrates, and electrolytes pumped through my blood stream 12 hours a day. I’ve had sepsis 3 times in 2 months. I’m not saying it happens to everyone but the nurses in the hospital said they see this all the time. No one mentioned this before surgery. No one helped me after surgery. Srikanth’s office told me to go see my PCP who is not a specialist in weight loss surgery. I’m so dissatisfied with Srikanth’s office with the exception of Karli. She is wonderful but my issues came on before she started working there but now I have a resentment against there office and don’t ever want to go back. It MAY not happen to you BUT watch out for those symptoms.
  7. Oh my goodness the noises! Lol I get them too. I lost 20 in my pre op diet and then 10 after surgery. I’m not losing super fast after surgery since I’m not eating enough protein. I’m adding it all together though as my total loss to keep me staying positive. Congratulations on your 20 lbs loss!

    February 2022 Surgery Buddies

    I had mine on Feb 14th so I'm 5 weeks and 3 days out. I felt pretty good about fluids and protein until like 2 weeks ago drinking water and feeling pain/restriction, especially when it's room temp. Using a straw and having ice water seems to help me get it down better. I actually gulp in a lot of air when I don't use a straw. Most teams tell you not to, even mine but I feel gas pain in my chest without the straw. I'm doing really well with protein though and get 70-80 grams a day through about 700-800 calories. Rarely do I get to 800 cals though. I noticed on days when I have eaten up to 800 cals I feel nauseated at night so I try to not go over 750. It's a small difference but weird enough I can really feel it. I eat 3 small meals a day, one snack and a protein shake. My dietician has me eat 2 oz of protein every 2 hours during the daytime. I'm taking vitamins well, no hair loss...yet? I do need to take nausea medicine in the morning because maybe 4 times a week I wake up with the instinct to dry heave. I don't know why but I've always felt nauseous in the mornings, even pre op. I find that I can either focus on food or water but not both. When I drink 64 oz of fluids, I eat less and miss my protein goal. When I reach my protein goal, I drink less fluids. I find that balance to be really difficult to deal with and get right. I wonder when that'll be easier? It's also tough with the 2-hour eating rule and then the 10 min before 30 after drinking rule. I'd basically always have to have food or fluid in my mouth all day which isn't realistic for me. I've lost 29 lbs in 5 weeks. I don't really feel it yet/still feel like a big out-of-shape lump LOL. I think I'll feel the weight loss when I hit the 240's. I have my one-month post-op tomorrow with my nurse practitioner. Looking forward to it. P.S. Is anyone still dealing with constipation and ROCK HARD stool? I am on prune juice, Metamucil, colace and occasional senna tea. I go almost every day but it's incredibly forced, usually bleeding occurs or I need to slap on a pair of gloves and take it out (I know TMI I'm sorry ) . I'm going to talk to my team about it tomorrow but I'm so done with it. It also causes me a great deal of nausea. Wondering if anyone else is dealing with this and what you're doing to make it better?
  9. My surgery was on 16/2. It’s been 5 weeks post surgery. My fluid intake has gone up so much and I’m starting to lose weight again now. On the advice of my surgeon and dietician and trial and error, I’ve done these things: 1. Track my water usage using the Waterllama app. it’s cute and easy to use 2. track my food intake using the “see what you eat” app, making note of only the proteins I consume (I don’t count macros otherwise. Just make sure everything is “light” or “Low fat” and mostly “sugar free”) 3. set reminders on my phone to take medications, eat and drink (I don’t feel thirsty or hungry so this has been dangerous for me) 4. use water enhancers and uncaffeinated herbal teas to vary the taste of my fluids I haven’t been hospitalised other than that 1 night post surgery however I’ve been making weekly trips to meet the care team. I’ve lost 25lbs, which isn’t much. I was barely losing any in the previous 2 weeks but according to the body analysis, I was losing muscle and water. I was lethargic all the time but could still move. Once I got the proteins and fluid settled, I’ve been feeling so much better. For movement, I searched for anything “post bariatric surgery” and was doing basic stretches and walking for 15min then moved to 30 min. Now I look for “Low impact/intensity beginners cardio” lasting for about 30min to 45min. Don’t push yourself to the point of pain. Once I feel twinges, I stop. The physiotherapist in the care team suggests that movement be done for 10-15 min, twice a day at a start. For the first 3 weeks, my heart rate doesn’t go beyond 65% of my max heart rate. Now I’m pushing it to about 80%. After week 6 I will incorporate weights again. I enjoy resistance training and can’t weight to get back to it so just do what feels right to you. Find the type of movement that you enjoy. Whilst my body has been changing even without exercise, I am constantly reminding myself this is the same body. WLS is not magic. I have to take care of my body before I can get it to work right. This means eating drinking moving and resting sufficiently. I’ve been on 5 weeks of leave and this has helped me with my new-habit forming as well as allow me to heal gently. I will finally get back to work next Monday. I don’t know how I will be energy and pain wise but we’ll see.

    Negative comments from family members

    Being aggressive or abrasive works with my family because otherwise they will try and bully you i know all about being bullied when i was a kid so i now use it to my advantage and it works like a charm ...i hate pasta it just sits in my stomach like a blob and i hate how it feels , did you already have your surgery or are you waiting i am waiting to have mine, i have my first virtual appt 4 - 1 at 10 am , by the way my name is Rich , but everyone calls me.

    Any pre op smokers

    I was smoke free for 10+ years before surgery (I was a pack a day smoker for about 20 years before that). Then at around 1 year post op, I had a stinkin' cigarette while on vacation, and have been quitting and un-quitting ever since...for the past 2+ years. Ugh. So my advice would be try as hard as you can to not pick it up again once you put it down (yeah, i know, easier said). P.S. The first time i quit for the long haul was surprisingly easy: I had moved to a different country for a year where the cigarettes were ridiculously expensive compared to back home, so I just stopped. It helped, i think, that I was in a different environment so there were no habits nor routines to continue, you know? Good Luck! ❤️

    Negative comments from family members

    Okay so lets both take a deep breath together and break some of this down: Almost everyone here is here because we’ve had a history of eating/food/metabolism/addiction/toxic relationship issues. Maybe I’ve left a couple of things out, but that’s a good starting place. Let me start by saying that I’m now 3 years and 2 months from VGS. I had exceptional results. Lost over 100% excess fat, exceeded everyone’s expectations, and have more or less maintained. I lost 135 pounds in 9 months. Went from 267-132 (SW was 246). I’ve managed to maintain between 137-147 in the last 2 years after the free-fall dropped me down to 132. I was a hot mess at 132– BMI was right at 20% and people asked me all the time if I was sick. What I’m saying is the 10 pound “regain” is okay because I know that’s where my body needs to be. That being said, it’s still work. I still have to monitor what/how much I put in my mouth. Sometimes I tend to drink too much and I realize I’m using alcohol as a sub for food and then I stop and regroup. Sometimes I will find myself emotionally eating and have to stop and regroup. Sometimes I’m having a bad day or I’m on vacation and I just don’t give a damn. Afterwards I will stop and regroup. Only you (working with a therapist) can help deal with those habits, recognize them either during or after, then course correct. YOU do have all the power. Families can and will be toxic. If at all possible, have an exit strategy when it becomes too much. Have a go-to that doesn’t involve comforting with food and do that activity. Even if it’s as simple as putting on earbuds and listening to a guided medication. Even if you can’t physically exit the room. Also, I’m going to recommend that-for the short term at least-you’re going to have to let a certain amount of it roll off of you. You have decided a change is needed, but others aren’t compelled to go along with. In a perfect world, they would, but none of us got morbidly obese by living in a perfect world. I’m going to come out front and tell you that you WILL lose friends over this. There will be some relationships that WILL NOT be the same. They might end forever. You are about to embark on an amazing, difficult, rewarding, trying, and fantastic journey. It will be ugly at times. You will have highs and lows that will give you whiplash. You will not be the same person next year that you are this year. You MUST be prepared for all of this and be willing to embrace the good, the bad, and the ugly. It’s okay to vent. This is one of the safest spaces ever so vent away unapologetically. I’m trying my best to take my own advice because I’ve got plastics set up for May and my husband and my son are the only other two people on the planet who are aware I’m going to do this. I’m keeping it a secret from the rest of my family because of how many of them reacted when I had WLS. If any of them notices (somewhat doubtful as I can hide a LOT of skin under my clothes and nobody is going to see me naked) I will tell them after the fact - unapologetically and with a challenge in my tone. That challenge will remind them of how far and how successful I’ve become since I started this journey in early 2018. You’ve got this. We are here to help

    February 2019 weight loss buds

    Hello February 2019 peeps! I’m doing okay. Gained 15 back from my all-time low, but maintaining within a 5-ish pound window now for about the last 15 months. Some days I wonder if I should try to get back into the 130’s ( I dropped all the way down to 133 at one point) but I’m hanging in the upper 140’s and feel like this is maintainable. For me, 2022 has been dubbed “The Year of the Foot” as I’ve already had one bunionectomy and will be having my left foot done next month. I was very happy to only gain 2 pounds in the 7 weeks I laid on my butt all day long with foot elevated. So here is me at 147 at my daughters wedding reception on March 5th. I was rocking a size small dress and- of course- my walking boot. I’m super excited to say that on May 10th I will be having plastics!! I’ve saved up and will be having a TT with flank lipo and a thigh lift. We are going to piggy-back it 3 weeks after foot surgery so I can minimize my time off work. Hope everyone is well. I miss you guys.

    As you have learned from dealing with your issues with alcoholism (Congratulations, by the way, for 10 years sober) you need to avoid triggers and you need counseling to deal with issues that cause you to not live life to your fullest or happiest (such as eating disorders, addictions, etc.) I wouldn't focus too much on putting a label on your food issues, whether it's Binge Eating Disorder or Food Addiction or just plain Morbid Obesity . . . it's clear you have an issue with food that you need to deal with. WLS is a tool that will help you lose the weight, yes. But the bigger battle is the mental battle. Get into some good counseling to talk about your food triggers and issues and good luck on your WLS journey.

    3 years post op

    just so you know, a 10- to 20 lb rebound from your lowest weight is VERY common in year 3. I think it's just your body settling in to a weight it feels comfortable at - your new "set point". Of course, you can still lose again if you cut enough calories - but it could be a bit of a struggle if you're fighting against where your body wants to be. I've been dealing with the same thing since year 3 (and here I am in year seven...). different things work for different people. I count calories, which my dietitian hates (she's into "intuitive eating"), but I'm obviously not cutting back enough or I'd be losing weight. It's tough... I know other vets who've done Weight Watchers, Keto, and/or intermittent fasting. Whatever works - some approaches are more effective than others, depending on the person. to respond to your questions (sort of, anyway...), I don't do low carb - but the vast majority of my carbs are the healthy kind (fruit, veggies, whole grains). I have to average around 100 grams of protein a day because I malabsorb it (we discovered this pretty soon after my surgery), and I do manage to get that in every day. Other than protein, it's really just calories for me. If I stay in the 1500-1700 range, I can maintain my weight - but I'd really love to lose 10-15 lbs (!!)

    Did you lose your tummy fat last?

    A few things: 1. You are about six weeks out of surgery. At six weeks, I had lost some weight and a few people noticed, but not many. I had lost about 10% of my starting body weight at six weeks (according to your sidebar, you've lost close to 15%). I am at the seven month mark and I am finally around the point where random co-workers have really noticed my weight loss. Keep it up and the before and after photos will come (my before/after looks pretty shocking). 2. Even though I have a shocking before/after, I still don't see it in the mirror. Really. Truly. If I went solely off the mirror, I would say that my face looks a little thinner, but not much else. I didn't understand how a non-insane person could have body dysmorphia until I had this surgery. I have way more sympathy for people who are anorexic after this experience.

    Congratulations on being sober going on 10 years. If I were you I wouldn’t get too hung up on the label (unless having a name helps you somehow) if you have any type of disordered eating I would see someone who specializes as such. Not all therapists are equipped to work with disordered eating. I know it’s not easy thinking about establishing a relationship with someone else but if your therapist doesn’t happen to work with disordered eating as well I would really consider it as it is a very specialized field and you want to set yourself up to have the most success post surgery. I am not saying to replace your therapist. Just see someone else as well for disordered eating.

    i just read what BED is it said some of the psychiatric conditions are: PTSD Depression Bipolar disorder Now i know why i was relieved of my duties from the state police, I am surprised i made it through the academy i guess i am willing to be open to this eating disorder because if i keep fighting it i know i will fail because its rather obvious i have it the way i eat i wasn't GOING TO Share this but , i will i used to stick my finger down my throat for no other reason other than because i could NOT because i wanted to either i don't know i just want to feel better physically i am tired of living in this body i barely leave the house unless i have to like a Drs appt at the Veterans hospital or the chiropractor otherwise I'm in the house which gives me all timer to eat , the wife is at work 10 hrs.' a day so i have all kinds of freedom anyway that's a portion of my story.

    I realized this site is a Trigger for me and i say this i mean everyone is talking about food it causes me to want food let me help you explain{ i am in recovery for alcoholism ( almost ten years this summer) never mind it's to complicated all i know is I'm having a hard time calling myself a "food addict" perhaps i am in denial , perhaps i need to have someone on here to help me better understand better this disorder , help me someone i cant keep living my life like this , one minute i think i might have this thing they call BED i can identify with alcoholism because i know for a fact i am for sure a drunk I'll be sober i am sober 10 years this summer ( June 30 ) anyway again i don't know if I'm a food addict but i know this site is triggering me to want food therefore does that mean i have BED because i have been triggered before and that was the result of having been diagnosed with PTSD so ( i know no one on here is an MD or maybe there is)) i know the feeling(s) that surface for me , i hoped this made " some sense " enough out of me. ☘️

    Vegetarian meat substitutes

    Just posting another meal here, currently waiting 10 minutes to eat since I just had 8 oz of water. Shakshuka! It's one of my favorite breakfasts. I cooked the hell out of the vegetables since I'm on soft foods right now. Great way to utilize leftover marinara sauce too. I can't get through a whole jar and keep wasting it. My family eats this too but I just made it for me today since I'm home alone. If you eat both eggs you get 20 grams of protein! Not sure if I can manage both eggs so we'll see.     Did you lose your tummy fat last?

    I’m pear shaped and have lost weight/inches off my stomach, but the extra skin still hands off the front like an apron. I’ve a ways to go yet and try to look at a number of non-scale victories like climbing stairs easier, new smaller flattering clothes, or balancing on one leg longer than 10 seconds. I still measure mostly so I find the right sizes online or in thrift stores. I realized that the bat wings on my arms are not going to give me an accurate measure because there’s so much leftover skin. I try to focus on my muscle definition instead. The skin is my Clark Kent outfit, but underneath I’m Super Woman!

    I’m 2.5 years from VSG and 19 months out from VSG to RNY revision from hernia and GERD. I can’t eat a whole bunch about 1/3-1/2 cup at a time as I find it more filling than actual rice.

    Stalled for 3 Weeks

    This has been so accurate for me! I will drop 10-15 lbs really fast, and then it will slow down/stop for a bit, and then drop fast again. Repeat. I have to give myself a pep talk every time it happens!
