  1. Hi all! I am 6 months post-op and doing great. I've met all my surgeon's goals, bloodwork is great, energy is great, etc, There is a lot less of me! I am wondering from those of you who are even further post-op, what can I expect now as far as WL? I can see that it becomes more of an effort the further you move from your surgery date; however, calculating proteins and carbs feels easy to me now and my entire relationship with food is healthier than ever before. I'm having a small setback, weightwise-- I was at my first gw but had to take some medication which caused temporary weight gain so now I'm a tiny bit over gw. I'm ready to attack my stretch goal -- would love to hear from some of you what happens in the second half of this year and would appreciate tips for staying on track!

    Gained a pound

I know that my surgeon said it is normal to gain at first. When a body is injured it collects fluid and that is notorious weight gain. I believe one gal of water weighs about eight pounds.

    10 years post op?

Thanks for sharing this info. May I ask, what attributed to your weight gain? Had you started back eating what made you heavy to begin with? I'm preop and just observing real life stories concerning how to keep the weight off? I know it's a struggle...but, how can we maintain the weight loss? 5. Regarding this week's question, my response is probably different than most. I have stayed on plan. This was a planned weight gain period and I am now on a planned weight loss period. I am a bodybuilding fan and planned periods of bulking and cutting are part of the of the work to change your physique. That said, I absolutely effed up this bulk, it was my first and it confirmed that I am an abstainer and not a moderator. I have to have a structured eating plan to gain or lose weight otherwise it will be a food free for all. So while I now put in the work to get off the fat off, I do not think I gained any appreciable level of muscle during my bulk.
  6. I'm so nervous. My first appointment with the surgeon is this Wednesday and my period is about to start! I blow up like a balloon! I'm afraid I'll be above my starting weight. Do you think the doctor and insurance company take that into consideration?? Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App
  7. Hi, everyone. I haven't posted for a while, but I'm just coming up on my two year anniversary of being sleeved. I've generally maintained really well at around my goal weight of 145. I really loved that number. Around October, I started noticing that the scale kept creeping up to 148 and it was getting difficult to take it back down. I will admit to snacking/grazing here and there, but nothing more than I'd done in the year before that. We went on vacation on a cruise in November and I came back at 152, but was able to get it back down in about 10 days by just eating right and normal, since my habits were so vastly different on the ship. In the last month, I've seen my weight bounce between 148-9. It's been a struggle and I can't get it down. So I decided to really commit right in time for the new year (not because of it). Things I will admit I'm also not great about, unlike when I started: taking my Vitamins, making sure I hit my liquids. In fact, when I have tried to recommit to increasing my liquid intake, I gain like CRAZY. On Monday of this week, I started C25k after a long absence from the gym since September. I was around 148.5. I am now at 152.6 and having a meltdown. I know my liquids increased due to the workouts (yay?) and I have been trying to intermittent fast (and on non-fast days, doing 16:8 for the first time). I've been keeping a food diary the past two days of every bite. (I also started TOM this month -- sorry guys -- but I have NEVER put on this much weight and it usually comes off after day 1 hits) So why am I suddenly gaining? To say that I'm frustrated is an understatement. I don't know what to do. I could deal with bouncing around 2-3 pounds. But SEVEN from my goal weight that I maintained for 9 months is killing me to the point where I just want to sit down and cry. I'm recommitting to my fitness. I will be better about my vitamins and liquids. but it feels like it's all for naught. Maybe I should go back to strength training, which did seem to help me burn? I don't know, but I am at the absolute end of my rope.

    Weight loss surgery

Today my mom said that me needing surgery for my weight is all in my head. I share a house with mom and dad and my brother and whenever they can they take jabs at my weight gain. I've told them that it upsets me but they kinda do it anyway. I'm trying my best to watch what I'm eating and when I say I don't want to eat something they're cooking they talk about me like I'm not even there, saying sarcastically, oh she's not eating this she's on her diet, it really makes me think badly of myself for letting myself get this way with the weight gain and all. I've never had a real problem with my weight until I went to rehab for drug addiction. I really think I just substituted drugs for food. I'm fine with it because if I can overcome my drug addiction, I have 7 years sober, I have faith I can overcome food addiction. I just don't know how to handle all their snide comments about my weight. It's very hurtful especially coming from my own family. Anyone have any ideas on how to handle this. I am 4'11" and my starting weight was 238, I am now about 208-210, I am fluctuating all the time but they are really depressing me, at least I'm trying to better myself, when I came back home after my divorce at 238 lbs I also had to have a breast reduction surgery that helped me be able to exercise, I was a 42J now I'm a 42D, a huge improvement that enabled me to at least get up and go to the gym. I've been extremely active since last winter after my breast surgery, working outside on the yard, garden, mowing the lawn, now I can do all these things but no significant weight loss. Main problem though I am wondering how to handle the sarcastic remarks and not feel so alone and just want to cry. Any ideas??

CAN you eat vs SHOULD you eat

I was self pay in Mexico. I read on here and dozens of publicly accessible medical journals through NIH, NHS and Health Canada before even making contact with the surgeon in Mexico. I started receiving preop emails around the time I was to begin and have received weekly post op care emails each week since surgery. I also fortunately had a long history (of success) with low carb and ketogenic diets, and unfortunately also with drug and alcohol addiction and other self destructive behaviours. The latter contributed to my weight gain, and I made a decision to get totally clean and chart a new path for my health and sanity. Perhaps that's why I don't mind straight advice. I can't get down with Jesus or higher power BS and thus 12 step programs were never on my radar. I indulged myself in information and tried to educate myself as well as possible about any and all possible outcomes. This has always been my approach, and I totally accept that it's not for everyone. Some people want information presented to them personally on a silver platter and some of us need to be muckrakers and find it ourselves to believe it. What I can't accept is anti-informational people. People who don't want the truth and are happy subsisting in an echo chamber of what they want to be true instead of what is true. People who want sympathy instead of empathy.

    Secret Surgery

I can so relate to you. I am 4ft 11 1/2 in and weigh 187. I feel i have to justify to everyone why i want to do this. I am so sick and tired of everyone telling me i don't need this as i also carry my weight in the right places. A weight gain of 5lbs on me looks the same as a 15lb weight gain on a taller person. Tired of the yo yo. I am telling my job i am going on vacation. Taking 10 days off but it's more like 14 if u include the weekend. Surgery is April 13th. Nearly a year in and Not losing weight.

Sadly, it can take a while to get to an ideal place. It seems to me, however, that your experience is out of the ordinary. Bands neither lose nor gain weight. Your weight gain is most likely because of your own food choices and, if applicable, sedentary living. If you have been eating properly for weight-loss, it's probably time for a general physical exam. Also to consider is that some medications contribute to weight gain either by stimulating appetite or affecting metabolism. Assuming that you know understand what to expect from a band that's finely-tuned to you and your 'responsibility' as the band owner/user , I can only suggest that you make an appt to speak with the NP about your band's behavior. Yikes -- I'll leave all the above where it is, but it occurs to me that 3.5cc after 7 fills sounds especially odd. You may have a leak somewhere in the apparatus. Make an appt to discuss the possibility and what to expect when working with a band -- what's called the "green zone" where all is good.

    Meds slowing down weight loss?

I'm diabetic and I take mental health drugs that cause weight gain. I too wonder if they are keeping me from losing the last 50 pounds. I workout and my weight goes up and down. Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App

    Who Are You?

I am a 41 year old Mom from NJ. My wonderful daughter is 11 years old. I had my VSG done at Monmouth Medical in 2014. I lost about 50 lbs and since then I have put on about 30 pounds. I foolishly though that there was no way I would put weight back on after the sleeve, I have been in therapy and have discovered how much of my weight problem has almost nothing to do with my physical need or desire for food. For me, food is my emotional frenemy. I seek food for comfort, I eat when I'm bored, to Celebrate, and when I'm feeling sad. I'm embarrassed that I've regained this much weight back and I'm physically uncomfortable. I am going through a divorce, selling my house and starting a new job, the stress of both major events doesn't exactly help matters! I am looking for my spark, my motivation to get back on track somehow. If anyone has experienced weight gain and was able to get back on track I would love to hear your story.
  15. Like I said above: Weight gain, yea, it's real! I'm 3 yrs out (next week) - band to sleeve revision. I had done a pretty good job staying focused & losing weight. My start weight was around 245 pounds & my average weight was around 138 to 140 pds. My lowest was 135, but that didn't last long. I'm about 5'2. I know, a giant. So, my struggle started slowly but surely, a few months ago. So, most sleevers can't really eat a lot, which is good, because our tool is working. HOWEVER, it's up to you to eat the right foods. Well, I'm married to a BIG snacker! Hubby eat crap all the time. We're talking things like chips, crackers, chocolate, etc... I used to be able to ignore his snacking, but due to work related stress (hey, that's my excuse), I started to munch. Then, it happened. I was laid-off mid November. Yup, right before the holidays. Guess what happens when you're searching for a job, while sitting on your butt, day in / day out, for hours & hours..... You eat anything because you're frustrated / stressed / bored.... you name it. I know these are only "excuses" but I genuinely feel over-whelmed. We've been able to sustain ourselves, and should be able to hold on for another month or so, but after that.... shits going down. I only got 5 weeks severance as I was only there for 1 1/2 yrs. Thankfully, I had around 150 hours PTO that I never used. But, I did have to cash out some 401K funds to sustain us a little longer. The stress, yea, it's real!!! OK, what's the point of my post? IDK, I guess I'm looking for support. For anyone that's several years out, how do you keep your focus going, and avoid the stress eating? Yea, I know, being fat is NOT an option... but I am. I feel it. I'm almost 150 pounds. How did I let this happen? How on Earth do I get my mojo back? I was doing so well... Now what?

Do any of you vets completely ignore this rule?

The real issue with carbonated beverages is how toxic soda and diet sodas are. Some people are bothered by the bubbles, but there is research to support the fact that ingredients in diet soda actually cause weight gain. So the real question is, if you know that that particular had that works against your primary goal of getting leaner and healthier, do you really want to re-introduce it into your life at this time? For the record, I drink carbonated beverages whenever I want but I don't drink them very often. I'm more of a coffee drinker anyway. And the bubbles and carbonated beverages don't bother me at all. I am over a year out of surgery. Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App

Complications from advancing diet too soon

Kinda noticed that too, not sure how it all works in US but with us here in Glasgow it's so strict that surgeon appointment is only placed once investigation done by WM team. Psych can cancel you, dietian can cancel you and surgeon won't even look at you if they have suspected weight gain to meet targets. It's insane. I'm so sorry to hear of your family member. 18. @michigainchic, yes, it IS kind of horrific how little we need to survive and thrive, LOL. One one hand, I truly am eating less/satisfied with much less food and eating healthier, so that's, of course, fabulous. BUT, it's so easy to eat an extra 500 calories in a day! One glass of wine or beer with a snack at night, POOF, 500 calories packed on with a weight gain. There is no more mindless eating for me. I never was this anal tracking my food/drink -- like, down to a bite of my kids' nugget tracking -- but it has given me quite the focus on what do I want to spend my calories budget on. I feel so much better on a high protein/low carb lifestyle though. No more carb comas, dragging my butt around all day spiking with caffeine and carbs and then crashing an hour later. I like the steady energy I have, and the flawless complexion is a nice byproduct of few carbs and cleaner eating.

    Meds slowing down weight loss?

I know that years of yoyo dieting has made losing weight slower and harder for me. I actually decided to have WLS after following a 1200 calorie a day plan for almost three months and only losing 5 pounds. I think the drugs you mentioned cause weight gain because people on them eat more calories. Ask your surgeon about your meds and slower weight loss, he/she will know if other patients have this concern. Consider keeping a two week food journal (keep track of carbs, Protein and fat) and review it with the NUT to see what you can change up. I know I started to lose more weight when I added fat to my diet.

    Meds slowing down weight loss?

It could be affecting your weight loss. I am diabetic as well, I was on insulin and 2 oral drugs. I only take Metformin now as the glimepiride does cause weight gain, as well as the insulin. I would talk to your doctor to see what you can do and if there is another med you can take instead. You are very lucky to have your A1C down so much. I am not there yet, but diabetes runs in the family, whether your heavy/thin.
  21. I was sleeved March 2016. SW 267 CW 211 GW 155. I feel like I should of lost much more weight than this. Once I went on the Atkins diet and lost 150 in a year. I am coming up on my year now and have only lost 56lbs. Others I know have lost about 100 by now. I am totally low carb and nothing else is coming off. I am a Diabetic with severe Neuropathy pain in many places but my feet are the worst. Which means I take Effexor and Neurontin. Both those drugs normally can cause weight gain. I am wondering if they are hindering my weight loss. Anyone else have this issue? Is there anything I can do other than stop taking those meds? On a bright side....My A1c is down to 5.9 from 9 so that is amazing and I am off all my Diabetic drugs. Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App
  22. I'm very happy with my decision to get the sleeve done but i've been stuck around the same weight for the last 2 months. I dropped 50lbs almost instantly but just last week, I was 278, few days later I was 289. I can't say I eat extremely healthy but I can't say I eat extremely bad. And, of course, I can't consume much food. Why is it soo easy to gain weight, soo quickly? Is it just Water weight? I feel like the weight gain is defeating the purpose. 23. So is it normal to gain weight during the process? I start the liver reduction diet on Monday, January 9 and VSG is on January 23, 2017. Sent from my SM-G930T using the BariatricPal App

    Birth control and weight gain

I suspect that some of the weight gain is due to Over eating a using the birth control as an excuse. No oral hormone tx can cause a 15 pound weight gain. That being said there are people who suddenly gain a great deal of weight with implants and chemical IUDs. This is not a normal side effect. The cause should be ruled out even if you change methods, a visit to an endocrinologist might be in order. Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App

    How to Change your Mind....

When you look in the mirror SAY hi to the NEW YOU and keep encouraging yourself to continue on the successful path you have chosen. It does take time for our brains to catch up with our bodies. You have to remember that your weight gain came over a long period of time and now you are losing it rather rapidly and getting our minds to wrap around that is a challenge. Just like you made the choice to take control of your life and live a better quality, you too can work on changing your mental state. I use positive affirmations to encourage myself. I use post it notes and put them where I will see them; the bathroom mirror, the refrigerator door, near where I sit. Right now I am struggling with drinking my Water. I use to drink close to a gallon of water a day and now I am lucky I get in a couple glasses. SO on in my kitchen by the sink faucet I put a note "DID YOU DRINK YOUR WATER TODAY??" You and I can do this and enjoy the NEW US. It is a NEW YEAR and I wish you the best of success! SMILE and keep positive!!
