    Prescribed vegan diet

It's interesting that you were prescribed vegan diet post-op. I wish my NUT was that progressive. They support a vegetarian diet but not a vegan one. I ate mostly vegan before surgery and would like to switch back as soon as possible but I'm not sure if I can manage it.

    Any Banded Vegetarians out there?

I'm vegetarian, but lacto ovo and I have no problem at all getting in my Proteins. I start my day with a high Protein yogurt (Total Yogurt has 13 grams) and 1/2 serving of Kashi (7 more grams). Sometimes if I'm not in the mood for yogurt, I have cottage cheese, or even an egg, with the Kashi instead. For lunch, I often have a morninstar soy patty (150 cals, 9 protein) with whatever veggie I cooked that week (this week is roasted red peppers stuffed with spinach, couscous and just a touch of feta -- 120 cals and 5 g protein). I eat a fruit or veggie for a snack around 4:30, or sometimes a piece of string cheese. dinner is often a tofu stirfry that runs about 15 g protein and 300 cals. I usually hit 900-1100 cals (usually on the low end of that) and 60ish g protein. I'd love to exchange vegetarian recipes with you, particularly high protein, low cal main meals! Good luck with your journey.
  3. I am going to be banded August 8.:clap2: I just don’t know what I will be able to eat when I am allowed solids again. I am a big pasta eater. Can some one give me some ideas? Thanks

    Any Banded Vegetarians out there?

I'd love to get some new vegetarian recipes, too! I make scrambled tofu that's like scrambled eggs...even my kids love it. And I use the Morningstar Farms soy Protein meat substitutes, too. Most are good and fairly good protein sources. Emily

Is anyone out there a vegetarian?

I am not strictly a vegetarian but eat meat rarely and have been moving more and more to plant based foods. I use the Vega Protein powder and have at least one shake a day to help get my protein in. I eat veggie burgers, tofu and the plant based "lunch meats". My tummy loves unhealthy food!

It's not necessarily that your tummy loves unhealthy foods (good news!), but stuff like cookies are what people refer to as slider foods (not so good news haha). Slider foods are are soft simple processed carbohydrates of little or no nutritional value that slide right through the surgical stomach pouch without providing nutrition or satiation. When slider foods are consumed, they go into the stomach pouch and exit directly into the jejunum where the simple carbohydrate slurry is quickly absorbed and stored by the body. There is little thermic effect in the digestion of simple carbohydrates like there is in the digestion of protein so little metabolic energy is expended. The most commonly consumed slider foods include pretzels, crackers (saltines, graham, Ritz, etc.) filled cracker snacks such as Ritz Bits, popcorn, cheese snacks (Cheetos) or cheese crackers, tortilla chips with salsa, potato chips, sugar-free cookies, cakes, and candy. Definitely keep talking with your doc and nutritionist if you continue having issues with solid foods. Maybe try some vegetarian options that are higher in protein, like chili with beans but no meat. Good luck and keep us posted!

    cookbooks?

My cook books are all vegetarian except for my ancient copy of The Joy of Cooking. I did just find a Vegan blog run by someone who had bypass that made me really excited. I know I need to stay vegetarian at least until I hit maintenance, but I would like to go vegan one day. The cook book I like is called Vegan Soul Kitchen by Bryan Terry

    Vegetarian Recipes

I was banded on 8/23/10. I started out as a meat eater but had such trouble getting any kind of meat down. I decided to go veg for this and other reasons. I've been a vegetarian for about 6 months now and I'm a little limited on recipes. Anyone know of any band friendly recipes that are also vegetarian friendly?
  9. I just made this flavorful dish that is vegetarian but very delicious! You need: 2 tbs of Olive Oil, 4 cloves of garlic-thinly sliced, 2 tsp of grated ginger, 1 tsp seeded, coarsely chopped Habanero chili (which I found at chain grocery store), 1 tsp ground cumin, 1 cup chopped onion, 4 cups chopped Yam, 3 cups cauliflower florets, 28- ounce can diced tomatoes, 2 cups cooked black Beans, 1/2 cup Water, pinch saffron (boy that's expensive!), 1 cup chopped cilantro, 1 tsp of sea salt, or to taste. 1. Heat oil in 6 qt. stockpot over med heat. Add garlic, ginger, habanero, and cumin. Sauté until fragrant (about 2 min. 2. Add the onions, yams, cauliflower, tomatoes, beans, water, and saffron. Bring to a boil, reduce heat and cover (should be simmering), stirring occasionally, for 20-30 min. 3. Add the Cilantro and salt- adjust seasoning- let simmer for 5 more min. Although it suggests to serve with rice- I had to pass. Another option could be flatbread. It had nice heat- not a summer dish but its been chilly here in New England!

    Question Everyone?

Being a vegetarian these things are a staple in my diet.. Why would you NOT eat them??

    Better Seen...

Well, I don't think the commercial is that bad. I've seen commercials where people were wearing clothes that showed more than that, lol. I really, REALLY don't understand AT ALL what the visuals in that commercial have to do with being a vegetarian...?

    Help 😭😭

This is me too. I'm a year post surgery and not anywhere near my goal. I feel like it hasn't worked because my appetite has barely changed. I fill up fast ish on meals but I get hungry again really quickly so I basically eat half my meal but then have to come back an hour later and finish it. I'm doing the same thing with crisps and sweets. I'm vegetarian so find it really hard to get that much protein every day. I'm really depressed about it honestly and absolutely disgusted at myself for allowing it to happen. After the surgery for a couple of months I felt great because I was full so easily but now I feel like my appetite is the same as before the op. Maybe protein shakes might help?

    Am I eating to much?

I am 7 months out, I think a Boca burger is a great choice. I believe they have around 120 calories and with cheese maybe a extra 80 calories. Also they are high in Protein and Fiber. With spinach maybe the whole thing was 220 good healthy calories. Chicken- 3 oz is about 90 calories and it takes me longer to eat chicken than a boca burger because boca burgers have some carbs so it goes down easier. Sometimes we need a change from pure protein. I love vegetarian sausage, I have that and a egg almost ever morning since I was 2 months out.
  15. In the UK there isnt the emphasis on protein shakes that there is in the US after all will some people really buy and drink those shakes for the rest of their lives i get all my protein from normal natural sources such as fish and chicken etc greek yoghurt, frozen peas and milk .. if u plan your meals once u can start eating solids u can easy get your protein in without suppliments The vegetarians on this forum also get their protein in from sources like beans etc so i would look at alternative ways for protein ..

    water , peanuts and proteins

I think if you're chugging the water, it would get backed up in your pouch and could stretch it eventually. If you are taking small swallows and waiting in between, it should just flow through to your larger stomach. I have only seen a few people on here that said their surgeons said no to nuts. I have seen other people eating them, eventually. I think these are the last to the list of solid foods to be added. On that note, I just looked at my level foods list my surgeon gave me and starting with soft foods, I can have chunky PB! That's level 2. Level 3 says I can add nuts, says mixed, cashews, pecans and peanuts. As far as protein, as a vegetarian, you know you can have beans, soy nuts, etc. If you mean on the liquids, you're just going to have find a shake or powder that agrees with you and use that. Once you can add stuff to your liquids you could blend tofu to add to your broth and such. Best bet though would be to call your surgeon's office or nutritionist and ask them for specifics regarding all of the above. I can only tell you my thoughts and what my surgeon has given me. I can't tell you what you can or can't do. Best wishes!!
  17. I am 2 1/2 years out. It will be 3 years at the end of November. I started out at 418. The first 100 lbs. just melted off. The next 50 lbs. were more of a struggle. I have found myself at the same weight for almost 9 months now. No gains. No losses. Just hanging at 268. I have a few issues that I struggle with. I am not interested in plastics, but the more I lose the more I just look like a deflated balloon. This is wreaking havoc on my self-esteem. I know that I am healthier. I have engaged in activities in the past year that I never thought that I would be able to do again...camping, hiking and canoeing to name a few. I just wonder how much more gross (this is my word for myself) that I'll look when I reach a truly healthy weight. I have never had one of those sleeves that make you vomit, but I have restriction and I respect it. I don't push my sleeve. I just make poor food choices. I have gone completely down the slope smack dab into carbs and sugar. Waffle for Breakfast. Veggie fried rice for lunch. Black Bean Burger with bun for dinner. A Pop-Tart and tea before bed. (Picking up on the vegetarian vibe?) I just can barely look at tofu and the premade veggie Protein products are so sodium laced. I also admit that I abhor exercise. I was going to yoga 3x per week. Then I started having serious back problems. A herniated L4 & L5 with nerve root compression that causes mobility problems with my left leg. I went for 3 different injections, steroids and other, with a minimum bed rest of a week after each one. I totally lost my yoga mojo. I did the 5 day pouch test. Yes, my sleeve still works. I lost 7 lbs., but I felt like I wanted to eat the arm off my couch. I get legitimately hungry now. Not head hungry. Like my sleeve growls at me hungry. I know that this is a long post. I'm hoping that there's someone out there with a similar experience or positive encouragement. I beat myself up enough. I've stayed away from the boards for a very long time feeling ashamed for not being at goal. I don't want to hide anymore. I just can't seem to kick myself back into gear. It's like starting from square one except I'm in the 200's instead of the 400's. Anyone? Thanks!

    Finding a balance

I also forgot to add that I do mostly vegetarian. I'm not a big meat eater but endo/PCOS is the least of my worries when it comes to food.

    No Weight Loss--like at all

Let me start by saying that I was told to have this surgery because of autoimmune medical issues and side effects of steroids NOT that I was an overeater. The whole journey to approval was doctors saying that this is hormonal and less so a result of behavior. I gained 40 pounds on 2 weight loss medications. I'm not really eating meals or solid or pureed foods. My post op plan says to consume 3 protein shakes/day and I usually only get one. I don't usually get 800 because I can't tolerate anything. I'm vegetarian and am making an effort to eat mostly protein with low calorie/fats. Pre-op I lost 15 pounds in 2 weeks on a liquid diet of fewer than 800 calories. AND I WAS NEVER HUNGRY--EVER! Now I dread eating and never feel that full feeling--just sick. I feel more hunger now. I feel better when I don't eat, so I hardly ever do. I was told only walking. No other exercise is allowed. I walk a lot since I live in NYC. I still have severe pain in my umbilical incision with certain movements. So, I actually don't eat 800 calories/day, however, that is extremely calorie restricted and should result in weight loss even without the surgery.

    New and Struggling

I hated the puréed phase. I felt the same way. Nothing puréed wanted to go or stay down. Turns out, my sleeve hates purée, to this day I can't do it and I'm 1yr out. I ate a lot of yogurt and vegetarian chili that I pulverized with my teeth during the purée stage to get calories in. You're not alone in this.
  21. Ugh, questions about liquid diet --- I was supposed to start Tuesday, 12/15, and I didn't start until Friday, 12/28. On Thursday I had a lot of garbanzo beans and peanuts and raisins (chick peas in vinegar & lemon w/ some olive oil is like, my favorite thing), and even last night, after starting, I had some blue cheese (basically thinking "oh, it's melting in my mouth"), and nutella! The nutella was bad... because it is insanely high in fat and I had a lot of it... and I think the liquid diet is less about liquid and more about low fat/sugar. But I can't get the straight dope on it from my doc, and I was scheduled for surgery in October but I got an upper respiratory infection and couldn't, and I was doing fine on my liquid diet, so I know I can do this just fine, but my surgery is scheduled for JANUARY 8 and it's now the 29th and I had freakin' blue cheese and nutella in the middle of the night! If I am strict for the next 11 days, am I cool? It seems so many doctors give out so many different diets, and honestly I would be OK if it were solid but just low fat/sugar, I'm a vegetarian anyway, so what I crave is broccoli and carrots and peppers and beans and fruits (which can be high sugar). Usually I would admit what has gone on to my doctor, but they were very upset when I postponed before, and I am sure about the surgery, and I don't want them to be like, that's it, we're not doing it.... what do you guys think?? Thank you so much in advance, I'm glad I found this forum!

    B12 supplementation

I was certain I was B-12 deficient (vegetarian), but once I finally got my labs back from my physical I turned out to be deficient in nothing except Vitamin D (which is apparently quite common!). One of the things that makes VSG great is that you do not have the same risk of malabsorption as some surgeries- that does not mean that you are in the clear, but certainly do not be too fearful. I thought for certain I was going to be deficient, but everything is better than what it was when I was overweight!
  23. @@p3aCH3s - ask questions that are important to you. I specifically asked about plant based diets since I am a vegetarian. I also made them aware of my many food and medicine allergies to make sure that they could work around that. I also informed them that I preferred no blood transfusion in case of emergencies. My surgeon was able to ensure that none of these things would be an issue and developed plans to ensure that. I also stated my preferences not to eat heavily processed on imitation foods such as artificial sugars to both my surgeon and my nutritionist. Their willingness to work with me concerning these issues assured me that this was the right team for me.

The Natural Diet Solution For PCOS.......

I understand that eating organic may not be embraced by all dietitians, but ultimately it's a personal decision. I do think that eating whole organic foods is better, but I know that everyone doesn't think the same as I. I have enjoyed reading this book and I feel that the authors are very educated and knowledgeable. I feel like I am making a good decision for me and that's all that counts. Not all professional dietitians are always going to agree on everything anyway, so I always read up on anything new and make my own decisions when it comes to my health. I've left out an entire food group before on certain diets (bread, meat) so that doesn't bother me at all. I've even thought about becoming a lacto-ovo vegetarian and that would be leaving out an entire food group also. I am not endorsing this book by any means, it's just something I want to try for myself............if it works for me, that's great, if it doesn't, so be it, I'll try something else. If I do not see results from this, I will probably become a lacto-ovo vegetarian and still try to eat whole organic foods when possible. I am still trying to find my way with my band and with PCOS, trying to figure out what works best for me. That being said, thanks for your concern and good luck to you.
  25. I'm on day 3 of 28. I'm finding it ok so far. I'm allowed 3 meal replacements and 2 cups of veg each day. I'm not a shake drinker so so far I've had a Bioslim bar, veg soup and veg, veg soup and veg. I'm vegetarian so the veg is easy, I'll have to get creative to mix it up a bit. I'm getting the Optifast chocolate dessert to try instead of soup at night. Been eating 3 pickles at night at as a snack, getting lite jello today too. I'm weaning myself of Coke No Sugar too. Stay strong, we've got this!
