Reactive Hypoglycaemia
ShoppGirl replied to Bypass2Freedom's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Yea. Just start with the times that you naturally do actually eat anyways and then pick other times that are convenient from there. I also do a proffee in the morning (just protein shake and coffee to make an iced coffee like drink). I really am not a breakfast person but I have to do vitamins 5 different times a day so I do that with my soluble fiber mixed in and take my multivitamin once I get that down. It’s fast and it’s liquid too so it’s a good start to the day getting fiber, protein, fluids and my first vitamin done. I like the premiere protein caramel and I just mix it with some chilled coffee. I use the whole shake in a tall cup and add coffee the rest of the way but I am one of those people that are asked if I want some coffee with my cream and sugar so adjust as needed. But for sure, start with the snacks. They are a must if you have reactive hypoglycemia. Then add alarms to remember to eat those snacks. Maybe around 1 if you haven’t eaten yet you need to get something soon or have one of your snacks to avoid the 2-3pm issue. Hopefully that will help. -
Yes I drink these they save me because I would never get my protein in otherwise.

Does anyone have any pointers for where to get started? (I've been overweight most of my life. Very active but unable to control diet well. Ozempic didn't work. BMI of 34 so NHS won't help) I'm keen to look into surgical options in Europe but really don't know where to start and don't want to end up somewhere dodgy Thanks!

Anyone Annoyed with the "Stop losing weight"
ShoppGirl replied to AmberFL's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Well you really do have to lot your calories if you have not done that (and measure things- don’t just eyeball it (because you would be surprised how little the portions look that we actually need after years of feeding an obese body and don’t go by what others think because they are used to seeing you eat so much more so it’s just as much of an adjustment for them as it is for you BUT, if you have tied all that, don’t just give uP, you’ve still got options -

Have you tried the protein waters yet? Some people like them better than the shakes. Also, if you have a recliner, some people find that mkre comfortable for sleep for a while. -

I am 12 weeks/3 months out. It wasn't my best weekend as far as carbs, but I also don't think it was terrible; it was my highest calorie count since surgery at 1500. The next day, I just tired to really focus on protein and low carbs. I did go walk today and got in a little over 2 miles so that feels good to be more active again. -

Hello! I'm new to the group. I just had surgery on the 17th. I'm really struggling to stick to liquid diet until cleared by surgeon. Husband has been super supportive with broths and other liquid diet adhered menu options as he cooks dinner for the household. Next check in with doctor is Tuesday and I hope he gives the clear for pureed foods so I can at least stop feeling like I'm on empty constantly. -
can you live entirely off protein the shakes??
waterwoman replied to Bessieboop1981's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
I must admit, I am one of those people who is addicted to protein shakes and even eight years after surgery, they make up the majority of my diet. Do I think this is wise and good? Absolutely not. However, my blood work continues to turn out fine every year The human body is amazing and the amount of abuse it can take -
Make yourself down a protein shake, even if it's half in the am and half in the pm -- just until you're more able to get the protein from food sources. (Or even then, if it suits your needs). It doesn't have to be delicious, it just has to be nutritious -- at least while your body is still recovering (6-8 months?) and trying to establish a new regime of what it can eat. A protein shake, a bar, sip some bone broth -- whatever you need to do to get that protein up. ❤️

Well, I got the phone call. I arrive at the hospital at 5:30 tomorrow morning. It feels surreal. My plan for more protein today is going better, but it's still a rough time. But by this time tomorrow, it will have all been worth it. @Onemealplan Owyn protein shakes are actually part of my regimen (not currently because clear liquids). I've been drinking them for a couple of months now. I do like them, just wish there was more variety in flavors. I do wish I could handle the Premier protein as they have a lot of flavors to vary my diet with. ETA: @Pepper_No_Salt I hope you're doing well! Sounds like we are still surgery twins, based on what you said about the pre-op diet. ❤️ -
Hello - for anyone who has gone through the northern California Kaiser bariatric program, how are you handling the diet post op? It is very strict, not allowing any protein shakes, carbonated drinks, caffeine and alcohol. We’re also taught that we have to eat our meals deconstructed, eating all the protein first before anything else. I’ve asked the nutritionist if this was forever and she said yes it is. I keep, however, seeing videos and post from other people who have coffee daily and who make meals like for example, the ricotta cheese bites where everything is mixed in a small muffin pan. I understand different programs do things differently, it’s just strange to me because it’s the same surgery everywhere. Thoughts? Experiences?

Yes. I’ve had the same email since dial-up. I’m nervous about the liquid diet. I’m basically broth & protein drinks. I live alone so I’m in the process of getting rid of all my food. Best of luck with the surgery. Let me know how it goes. -
Going back a step?
ShoppGirl replied to NeonRaven8919's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Going back a stage for a little while is never a bad thing. We are all different and heal at different rates. In a few days, maybe try a smaller portion, thinned out a bit like @Bypass2Freedom suggested. You can always supplement with protein shakes and just try new things when your home and don’t have a lot going on. -
Depends on the type of smoothie. One you make yourself with protein powder, milk, yoghurt, a powdered flavour if you use plain yoghurt, a little allowed fruit & you control the ingredients - okay. But a purchased one I’d question. Check the nutritional value & ingredients of any you buy. I used to buy a yoghurt smoothie drink from the same company that made the high protein yoghurt I ate. The nutrient value was similar but with more protein (30+g) & more natural sugars (not added) from the milk added to the yoghurt to thin it to a drinkable consistency. Then I bought a different one but the added sugar content was so much higher & the protein content was very low. I used to buy them before I realised how easy it was make the yoghurt smoothie drink by simply blending the high protein yoghurt I liked with milk. What does your plan say? If it doesn’t say, check with your nutritionalist.

Mine never would. None of those are as good as broccoli or cauliflower, cucumbers, when it comes to nutrition. The amount of protein, the reason why I said measure it is because you'd see a lot of calories in there. The chicken isn't plain, so there's calories in what it is cooked in. Mozzarella is never ever recommended for us because its a lot of fat. That's another reason why I said measure in 1 ounce cups. You need 60-70 grams of protein a day. 2 eggs in the am is 14 grams. 1 ounce chicken is 47 calories if boneless, skinless. 8 grams protein. 3 ounces or even 4 ounces is about 150-200 calories and 24 grams of protein. 30 at the most at one time. So there's where your calories are coming from. That doesn't include anything else on the plate. This is why I said measure your food. The calories are coming in there and I bet those sticks are also contributing to potential fat and the like. I have carbmaster yogurt. Don't see that and it is 3-5 grams fat, lots of protein, w/no carbs. That's another low calorie option - 70 calories that works too.

so do you all just add protein powder unflavored to these?

Food for months post sleeve
Bypass2Freedom replied to Fars's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I know I am a bypass patient so it is a little different, but I tend to eat similar things as others have said this far out! Breakfast (when I manage to eat it) tends to be a protein porridge pot, or if I don't feel hungry in the morning I have like a protein iced coffee & a protein shake/Huel shake. Lunch tends to be either some form of wrap with chicken, or some sort of salad pot. I don't pre-make my lunches which is probably a bad thing, but also just to encourage myself to walk to the shop at lunchtime so I can get some steps in 😂 Dinners really vary, but I have found that I can eat most things: chicken, beef, fish, seafood etc. So I just cook normal things like spaghetti Bolognese, curries, salmon & broccoli, anything that takes my fancy really! I can eat a small amount of carbs, especially things like brown rice & pasta, but burger buns are just too much so I just take the bun off 😂😂 -
I’m trying to find the best protein powder. Right now I’m using Premier Protein pre made bottles-cake batter, coffee, chocolate peanut butter, cookies and cream and banana are my favorites. What are protein powders that are being used everyone? Thank you.

Reactive Hypoglycaemia
catwoman7 replied to Bypass2Freedom's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
the kind of reactive hypoglycemia that some people get after bariatric surgery isn't necessarily related to diabetes. It can happen to non-diabetics, too (I'm not diabetic). I've also seen it referred to as "late dumping", because it tends to happen a couple of hours after you eat (as opposed to soon after, as is the case with regular dumping). I mentioned in my response above that my physician couldn't find anything wrong with me when she did the workup, but she told me to let her know the next time I had that experience. The next time was a couple of weeks later. I'd been at a retirement party and had a whole piece of cake (instead of a couple of forkfuls, like I used to have back in those days). A couple of hours later, there it was again - dizziness, etc. She said it was likely reactive hypoglycemia (AKA post-prandial hypoglycemia), and it may not have shown up at the workup because my glucose might have been normal the day I went in for that. Anyway, yes - it's not uncommon after WLS, . It often appears when you're a year or so out (although sometimes sooner...or later). They say to eat protein - or a something paired with a protein - every three hours or so to prevent it (I know it's orange juice or something similar for regular hypoglycemia - but she specifically said protein with this type - may be something to specific to the WLS-caused version) -

First Bariatric Christmas
Chatterboxdea replied to Bypass2Freedom's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
I have the same concerns going into the holiday season; all 3 holidays in a row always feel hard and gluttonous. I'm going to avoid candy on Halloween and for Thanksgiving and Christmas, I'm going to ask for a salad plate instead of a big on and just take small scoops of what I really like; planning on starting with my protein first. -

@Hiddenroses you may want to double check about the peas. They were specifically mentioned no peas or corn in my book for the purée stage. I think it has to do with the shell. Also, I didn’t ask this time so research may have changed but when I got the sleeve 3.5 Years ago I asked about the collagen and was told it was fine to take it but not to count the protein towards my goal because they really didn’t have enough information to prove that The protein content was accurate. -

@Hiddenroses that GENEPRO is the one I was asking about. I have it and mixed it in pudding and I couldn’t taste it but I wasn’t sure how to mix into hot things. You say to mix with water first, huh? It’s a tiny scoop compared to most powdered protein so one scoop is not really as much as your thinking I bet. When we get to more normal portions we may be able to add more than one scoop even but I’m not sure about how much it would change the texture. Has everyone else discovered protein waters yet. They were obviously handy in the liquid stage and full liquids when you get sick of shakes but even now in purée they are good since we are not consuming enough food to get all of our protein. I try to have a drink after each meal and they are 20g protein so that combined witb the 5-10g I get in my 1/4 cup serving is pretty much 30 average per meal (my breakfast shake in my profeee is 30 by itself. My goal is 72-108g so around 90 is good I figured. -
They have done so much cottage cheese. It’s delicious! High protein too!

Problem with ignoring is the pressure that comes from realising you are getting majority of your protein from protein water in my case - can’t bear the PP post op and not real food
