  1. One last thing. Are you on any BC?? If not, you may want to consider it. I went on it to regulate my periods and ever since they have been less Heavy and less cramping, as a result I assume. May be worth asking your Gyno about.

    September surgery buddies!!

Surgery was a success Tuesday afternoon! Spent the night at the hospital and that felt a little rough. They offered me broth and water, but every time I tried either I'd get nauseous. I only slept 2hrs at a time bc I kept having to pee and I couldn't get comfortable in the hospital bed. Luckily I was able to go home Wednesday late morning. People were texting me and I couldn't concentrate on even holding my phone because my body felt weird. Being home feels better. I'm very independent, and I had my aunt and a cousin doting on me and asking to help, which felt wrong to me lol. But my bed at home is bigger than the hospital bed and doesn't do that inflatable thing the hospital one does for bed sores. Getting comfy is still difficult, and I'm a side or tummy sleeper so it once I got home to a million pillows I tried my sides. Left at first was a no go, I assume that's the side where my stomach is sutured. Right side felt better and it took like 4 long naps in-between using the bathroom and returning text messages. I'm not sure if it's gas pain in my neck and shoulders, or from being stretched out weird during surgery, but my neck and shoulders are very tight. When I was in the operating room before anesthesia knocked me out, they had both my arms extended to the side and where strapping them down. I have a rotator cuff problem that comes and goes and it feels like it's back, which is why I think it's from being stretched weird. But I kept walking around my room to try to get rid of it if it was gas. I actually watched the first half of the fellowship of the ring while pacing around, so that's at least an hour lmao. Chewed two gasx tablets. Eating also is a little weird. At my hospital breakfast I was able to get down a little cream of chicken and water, and didn't fell nauseous, but I couldn't tell if I was feeling hunger pains or full pains. When I got home I had some protein water, then after a couple of naps I very slowly ate 2oz of jello. I had some bone broth with added protein powder for dinner, but not a lot because it made me nauseous, I'll try tomorrow without adding extra protein and see if that changes anything. I took a disolvable anti nausea but honestly that made it worse. It's almost 5am here in SoCal, not sure what woke me up but at least I'm with it enough to type out this long report hahah.

    August surgery buddies!

My program wants us to wait a year on coffee. It seems from groups online there's lots of people that drink a ton of it. I have read that it can cause or exacerbate ulcers years down the road. There's a woman on FB who posted about how she didn't take her vitamins, kept smoking, drank coffee, etc. and was fine until 5ish years later she had ulcers explode and a bunch of debilitating and disabling health issues, to the point of being on a feeding tube, in a wheelchair with a stoma bag fortherest ofher life. Lost a foot too. Scared the crap out of me! For me, since I haven't had any coffee in a month I'm going to stick to my herbal decaf tea. It's crazy to me bc I was a huge black coffee/espresso drinker. Does your program say what they recommend on coffee?

I'm off my birth control for surgery, and guess what decided to show up today. Before BC, I'd have a very long, heavy, and painful period, hopefully that won't happen again. Surgery is Tuesday. 😫
  6. Re: losing teeth and TikTok. It's TikTok. Who's saying this? First hand post WLS patients with first-hand knowledge, or the Body Positivity/Fat Liberation/HAES crowd who have a vested interest in putting others off weightloss? I've never heard of the teeth thing. It sounds very much like scare-mongering BS to me, and that it's coming from TikTok raises one mighty red flag. You'll likely have some temporary hair loss, but losing teeth? Never heard of such a thing in terms of a WLS side effect. Re: the easy way out. People again often have an ulterior motive, or are projecting their own issues when they double down on the whole "easy way out" myth. I have never dieted harder and changed my lifestyle more diligently than I have after WLS. WE do the hard work counting calories and watching macros and exercising. The surgery simply makes it next to impossible to fall off the wagon. Do people who insist it's the easy way imagine it's ... what? Like the tooth fairy? Fat is taken away by the blessed pixies every night as we still eat whatever we like? It's ignorance, or in the case of people who want to argue and not accept the truth: willful stupidity. And they're not people worth having around. Some people also just project their own insecurities and that will manifest as a nasty little emotion called envy. You'll find these people in both the above camps.

    Kitchen tools

I bought a thermos cup. I was so fed up of my coffee going cold before I had more than a few sips of it. Now its summer I just drink cold coffee. I needed a step to get in my bed the early days after surgery. We had a bed wedge already and I still use it. If I could have afforded it, I would have bought a recliner chair for the first few weeks after surgery. I would have slept in it. I had terrible nausea and GERD Another thing to consider - I had my surgery in very cold weather, end of November. I very quickly found as I lost weight that I was freezing cold all the time. 100lbs + later, I am ready for this winter. I have lots of fluffy blankets for the sofa and fluffy slippers. My husband spent the winter in his underwear, he couldn't stand the house so warm.

I love when people post research! Have you looked at Orgain Clean Protein shakes (not the powder)? It doesn't specify what kind of protein, just grass-fed milk protein concentrate, do you think that mean it has casein too?

    Invincible, or not?

I just got back from a work function where we were fed several meals buffet style. Someone made a comment each time "you aren't eating very much". I just said, "not that hungry" LOL

    BCBS Federal

Hey everyone ( I know this post is old but I recently refuse FED BCBS and wanted to inquire about the approval process. Did anyone have to wait 6 months before surgery or is that requirement waived? Any input is greatly appreciated!

    Reactive Hypoglycemia

Do you mean hyperglycemia? Hypo is low BS but at 301 it’s high?
  13. It depends on the hospital. Both times I’ve had surgery with my insurance (non-WLS) I was billed for my portion after the fact. It’s usually copays I pay up front bc it’s a small charge but larger charges come later. If you’ve gotten preapproved already then the hospital shouldn’t be too paranoid…

    Denied by insurance

I have BCBS Fed and I didn’t have any specific evidence of previous medically supervised weight loss interventions so I freaked out about that, but I managed to get approved. I did go over my history with my dietitian and there’s some indication of weight loss in previous claims so maybe that’s what counted.

These are theprotein ones I use: 1) AGN Roots Grass-fed Whey from Amazon - you can heat it in soups, or blend into smoothies, too and it does not have any flavor https://www.amazon.com/AGN-Roots-Grass-Whey-Protein/dp/B07X9V8718 2) Pre-protein liquid protein - You have to make sure that it has the L-Tryptophan ingredient in it to be a complete protein. Bariatric pal sells it here on their website and it is available on Amazon. I have been running into out of stocks lately because it works so well. I dissolve it into my water and it actually tastes good instead of that funky protein flavor. I also dissolve it into my jello. https://www.amazon.com/Pre-Protein-Predigested-Hospitals-Nutritional-Grape-Flavor/dp/B09JBDGKBW/ref=sr_1_5 They also have cherry and peach flavors. I like them all. Since there are out of stocks on a few items, I have just recently ordered ProSource Neutral Flavor to mix into my jellos and waters. I sure hope that helps! I am still in pre-op clear liquids, but I can easily average over a 100 grams of protein a day with the help of the liquids and unflavored versions.

    July 2022 peeps!

I hear everyone who is fed-up with the protein shakes! I bought a 12 pack of the ‘liquid drink variety—Protein20, or Something like that because I just couldn’t tolerate the taste of the shakes constantly. These aren’t that much better because they’re kind of sickeningly sweet but the strawberry flavor is passable if I drink one every few days. They have 20 g of protein each. last night I had cream of broccoli soup, but I didn’t know how much to have because it wasn’t indicated in my program manual. So I slowly ate 4 ounces and it didn’t seem to bother me. Does that sound about right? I did pour a small Amount of the UNJury chicken broth protein powder in it and it didn’t Ruin the taste, thankfully. Question: Has anyone used the plain protein powders by adding them to soups or yogurt or pudding, etc, in order to maintain protein levels for each day? If so, which brand? I will do anything not to have to drink the shakes twice a day. Thank you.
  17. Finally got my surgery date! Will be 10/21. I’m sure my mom will find time to be with me immediately after surgery but come Monday I’m on my own. My surgeon’s office has informed me I may need to be out 4-6 weeks and that they want FMLA papers, which is more time than expected as I was planning to take a week off, I’m only a desk jockey. My mom has missed a lot of work and doesn’t want to miss more, she’s been dealing with her own health issues and her company’s BS. She’s also less than enthused I’m going this route which is why she isn’t fighting harder to be with me I think. What tips do you have for post-op recovery alone? My mom wants a home health nurse to come check on me but I’ll have to see if the surgeon will be willing to write an Rx for it, or will that be necessary?

    Average time off from work?

I work with the school system and worked 5 weeks after my surgery with the ESY Summer school. With the exception of eating a little fast a couple times because I was talking and not paying attention, so I got that stuck feeling until I burped a couple times, I did fine. I even ran with some kids. Participated in everything and had a great 2 weeks. I'm back at my regular job (since August 2nd) and school starts in 3 days (August 10th) and other then nerves begging to be fed(I'm starting a new position) I'm doing really well. I come home worn out once I hit my front door and I'm asleep by 8:30pm but I have good energy throughout the day. I don't allow snacking though other then a protein shake before school starts so that helps with nervous eating. I do have a couple different sources of protein(cheese squares in my mini fridge and beef jerky) in case I start feeling bad and need a boost. They are already portioned so i won't overeat. I don't know how much energy I'll need when I'm actually dealing with students.

    Liquid diet

I used vitamin patches for the first few months. I found the chalk vitamins disgusting and there would be too many to take. Now I eat a lot of fruit veg & take gummy vitamins. I knowwww they aren’t as good as other vitamins but I don’t forget to take them everyday bc I like them and my levels are perfect. I vote patches in the beginning!!
  20. That's so scary. Even before I attempted to lose weight I learned a lot about nutrition and cut most of that stuff out of my diet. It's just all so bad for you, and it really doesn't taste good, especially if you've been away from it. It was hard for me at first with all of this because of the artificial sweeteners in the shakes and stuff. I worked to cut all of that out of my diet a long time ago and I hated it having to add some of it back. I'm happy to be able to avoid all that stuff again. When my son was little I was so picky about everything I fed him, then he went to school and got exposed to all that junk food. He never even had soda until last year at a school party and now he likes it. [emoji849] It's so frustrating, because it's everywhere. Sent from my Pixel 5a using BariatricPal mobile app

    Doubting Whether I Should Proceed

I was worried about that also (limitation on foods and experience as your food pusher has warned you), but the reality is that you have no limitations on the types of food you’ll be able to taste and eat once you have healed from your procedure and have maximized your weight loss - though you don’t have to wait for the maximization to sample some yummy foods, if that is your choice (once you’ve healed). The real life frustrations I do experience involve limiting meals out - especially hard when husband is athlete and bodybuilder and wants to eat all the time. I have recently had to ask him to stop talking about food. I’m not in any mood to have someone talk about endless options of food that I won’t be entertaining. He asked for pizza and French fries while we were out the other night running errands and I refused to drive to either place. I also try to be outside as often as possible bc when I’m in the house food seems to want to call my name and I’m avoiding it. My will has strengthened since surgery and I can imagine that might be something to fear for a food pusher.

    July 2022 peeps!

Hey everyone, I’m finally post-op. Surgery was Wed 7/27, everything was textbook. I have to admit, I’m in a lot more pain than I thought I’d be experiencing. Got rid of the gas okay by day 2, because I walked around a lot and did a lot of deep coughing. I haven’t taken any pain meds, only Tylenol the whole time. And I haven’t drunk anything but water. I’m on the evening of day 2, and my abdomen still hurts a lot. Definitely the big incision on the right side, but also my lower back and side. I feel like I have a stitch in my side almost all the time. Also on day 2, I vomited, I think after the last dose of Zofran wore off. A wave of nausea just came over me really hard, and I threw up. No water, just mucus type stuff? Gross, sorry. It was too late to talk to the surgeon bc it happened after 5pm. I felt better, and haven’t thrown up since. From what I’ve read, it’s pretty common in VSG patients, especially women and those who have severe motion sickness (which I do). Hoping it’s gone away for good.

    August surgery buddies!

Yes, I did a full liquid before attempting the clear liquid. Clear liquids aren't as satisfying, but you can also use some of your creamy soups and add more water to qualify as a liquid. My go-to proteins were several different types to keep me from being bored: 1) Keto Chow shakes made with 8 oz unsweetened coconut almond milk 2) Premiere protein shakes 3) Unflavored AGN Roots Grass-fed whey (to put in soups or smoothies) 4) Liquid protein to put into water and my SF jello 5) Power Life High Impact Whey Protein (kinda sweet, so I mix it into coffee or a SF carnation drink mix)
  24. Hi Kevin! Dietitian here. You're correct in that much of this isn't researched and is anecdotal. Clear liquid stage is to help your stomach heal and prevent nausea/heartburn, everything you listed. If you feel like you're tolerating that stage fine, you can move on to the next. Just take baby steps.. start slowly sipping on a protein shake, if you do great try to add something else. If you start to feel queasy, take a step back for a day. It is all subjective and listening to your body. Some of the other things you asked about... corn/grits can be difficult to digest. I'd recommend trying that down the line, maybe 3+ months post-op. Small amount of potatoes is ok. The main concern is that it's just crucial to get your protein- so eat the potatoes last. As you know, you'll fill up on much less food way quicker, so you don't want to fill up on potatoes. Same thing with rice and peas. Rice can also expand in your pouch and make you feel uncomfortably full, so very small bites & chew very well. In our practice you can have scrambled eggs in the pureed stage. Dried fruit isn't advised bc it's a large amount of concentrated sugar- even if sugar isn't added to it. Honey digests the same as white sugar- so you want to avoid, or minimize, it to prevent dumping syndrome. For fish... if you're tolerating other "soft" foods fine, I don't see why you couldn't introduce it sooner. As long as it's tender & flaky. I hope some of this helps!
  25. Thank you both for the replies. I have tried to separate myself from my family when they eat but it always seems to end up that I need to make my kiddos food bc her dad is still working, which I can't fault him for that, I know life can't stop because of me. Saturday we went to a catered BBQ birthday party. Having just a bottle of water there was not fun. But I did it. I know I can do it, but gosh this is hard. We are going on a family vacation leaving Thursday (horrible timing but I was supposed to get this done in June but had insurance issues and we already had the trip scheduled thinking I'd be post-op and ready to travel) so I just feel like I need to get out of this funk before I come home on Sunday and pack for the hospital, or more importantly so I don't ruin my families time. I don't want to end up freaking out on the operating table either 😞 Thank you for the support. I'm just a hot mess I suppose 😜
