  1. SleeveToBypass2023

Just had The Talk with my doctor..

I had the sleeve and the revision to bypass. I had to have the revision due to so many complications that came about because of the sleeve. I started off at 421 pounds, and I am also having a hysterectomy (mine is March 6th). And I have PCOS. If it were me, I would choose a bypass over the sleeve. My one real regret is that I didn't just do the bypass to begin with. Recovery was way better and easier, so much less pain, all around better experience.

    December Surgery Buddies!

Funny you mention that. I have seen a few people have gotten sick just before surgery. well, as far as the ones that passed neither of them was due to surgery complications. One was a drug overdose. She had so many issues after surgery and had to have a couple of emergency surgery to repair sutures. That however was on her! She did not follow the plan and less than three weeks post op she was eating Doritos. Well one c got lodged in her suture line and they had to repair it. She also over ate regular food and got some kind of blockage. the second one that passed she actually committed suicide. Now that MIGHT have been surgery related because your body goes through so many hormonal changes as well. So that is something that if you start feeling regret know that it is Normal but find a therapist to talk it out with. my other friend he had issues during surgery and they ended up putting him in a medical coma for two weeks. He was a large guy like me, well he was bigger by like 60 pound at around 450. I don’t know what all happened but I know he was having bleeding issues. But he was ok in a couple weeks and he was doing well the last time I talked to him. my other friend I think she just gave up and has gone back to “normal “ for her. So she is gaining weight. I do know I have to work on my mental health and stay disciplined after. And it shows how stuff we can control and some stuff we can’t. We just have to go into this knowing it is only a tool not a cure. so since you have kids I would really say make sure you have a therapist. It will be rough for a few weeks after surgery I’m sure. everything else is out of our hands. I know it is cliche but I follow the AA motto. Accept the things we can not change, Change the things we can, And may God grant us the wisdom to know the difference. all I’m in charge of is what food I put in my body and how much I exercise. Everything else is out of my hands.
  3. I had the sleeve surgery 9/26/16 and did well with it till I had my gallbladder removed in 2018 then I developed severe gastric reflux. My surgeon found that my bile duct got stuck open after they removed my gallbladder. With the bile constantly running in my sleeve it eroded it causing some precancerous changes. Once my insurance approved for a second surgery we went with changing over to a bypass in June of 2020 to fix the problem. I was very happy that we ended up doing the revision because I no longer had to sleep sitting up and my stalled weight loss finally started back up again and I was able to continue my weight loss journey. Fast forward to the present of this year I have been holding a good weight of between 137 to 145 lbs and no health issues really I just still struggled with dumping a lot cause my new pouch didn't always like food but I maintain weight with the help of shakes. Then in August of this year for some reason I just started getting where I didn't feel well and I dropped like 17 lb like it was nothing. I contacted my surgeon because I was concerned because of how weak and tired I had felt and I've noticed like vision changes my muscles or shrinking rapidly I was becoming dehydrated and all kinds of new things that I wasn't prepared for. My surgeon ordered a upper scope and a lower which come back very good. My lab showed that I did have a couple vitamin deficiencies so I increased my vitamins I actually have to go redo my labs here because I also ended up getting sick and went in the ER in my liver counts were high and they never been high before so we're checking those this week. But now I'm having a harder time eating and getting my body to absorb my nutrition even the protein shakes aren't helping maintain my body weight I am dropping weight still pretty rapidly I'm down to 124 lb now and my immune system seems to have been weakened because I get sick super easy and I try to stay away from other people otherwise that makes it harder on me and I guess get wiped out. I am currently waiting for my surgeon to call me back because I'm getting more concerned about how we come getting it's getting harder to do every daily things such as washing my hair folding my clothes and putting them away my muscles hurt and they're tired and weak and they get all cramped up. I'm blessed to have this surgery but I was never expecting that I would get this new very weird complication of just not being able to eat very well and to maintain weight. I trust my surgery team he's wonderful I'm hoping they can figure this out I'd really do not want a feeding tube or a PICC line I work with the public and that's even getting hard to do and I've almost thought about applying for disability until I get this figured out so I can quit losing weight by exertion. I'm just wondering is anybody else going through something like this or they just out of nowhere started losing weight again and they just can't seem to get it to stop. I'm worried not only for myself but for my family because my kids are still pretty young and I'm not ready to leave this world yet I still have a lot to live for. October 2023 surgery buddies

Hi guys. Been a few weeks since I've posted here. Feeling a bit frustrated and puzzled right now. So my first six weeks weight loss was great. I lost 48 pounds in six weeks since my RNY on October 9th. However, since then I've pretty much stalled out and only lost 3 pounds in the past three weeks. I noticed my weight seemed to stall once my surgeon cleared me for solid foods. So far I've been very blessed with my recovery. I've never experienced a single episode of nausea or dumping syndrome no matter what I eat. Not one episode from day of surgery up til now. Pork, beef, carbs, fat. Nothing seems to negatively affect me. But what really puzzles me is I seem to be able to eat much more than I should. For example, I can drink an 11ounce (330mL) Ensure in about a minute or two. Also if I don't strictly measure out my food portions, I'll easily eat more than I should, again with no nausea I should expect with overeating. I'm paranoid of stretching my new pouch out. When I brought this up with my surgeon during my follow-up, he looked puzzled as well but basically just dismissed it, saying we'll discuss it at next follow up if nothing changes. Sometimes I wonder if he actually reduced my stomach to the size of an egg like they said it would be post-op. I definitely cannot eat near the volume I could pre-op, but I feel like I'm able to eat way too much. Such as 8 entire grilled chicken nuggets in about 10 minutes time. Otherwise, I feel great. No complications whatsoever. I really hoping I haven't gone through all this time and money for nothing. My surgeon told me at my followup that I can expect weight loss to level out between 9-12 months post-op. And I can expect to lose half my total weight loss at 3 months. Have about another 75 lbs to go for my goal weight, so I feel like I'm on the clock here. Has anyone else out there experienced anything like this?

    Post Op Hunger

I woke up in recovery hungry, genuinely hungry. I would have eaten seafood if they'd offered it and I hate seafood. I'm one of that minority that didn't lose my hunger, in fact, I wasn't hungry before, it came back after surgery! Not fair! LOL I find hydration is important for controlling hunger. I had to have a stern talk with my body about how shakes are nourishment and head hunger was complicating the picture because I just wanted to chew on something. Sugar free popsicles helped. I was on liquids for 2 weeks post surgery, strict liquids, no cream of wheat or yogurt or pudding. I agree with Arabesque, distraction is your friend. As is drinking your shakes on a schedule and hydrating all throughout the day... I saved my popsicles for the evening, when I'm most used to eating a meal. Your doctor is mistaken if they assume being hydrated or having shakes takes care of hunger. It doesn't for everyone. Each body is different. Just remind yourself this is a finite period of time. Try warm broths to alternate between the cold, sweet shakes.

    November 2023 buddies

Good luck Brandy and Meisha and everyone else having surgery this week!! Tomorrow I will be one month post op!! I didn't lose anything last week, in fact when I checked my weight Monday I've gained 2,6 lbs. I might have cussed out the scale. 😂 I know it is just the infamous "3 week stall" and there is nothing I can do but stay the course. But maaaaan, when the scale starts moving in the other direction, it really does your head in. I worry this won't work for me, that this is all the weight loss I'll get, that my weight issues are too complicated for this surgery, etc... I know it isn't true, it is just a feeling and feelings are transient, but I'm pretty discouraged anyway. I'm sure it'll only last a few weeks, then get back on track. I plan on watching how everything is fitting while the scale is being difficult. I know it is just water weight gained from a stressed out body. But boy does your headgame need to be strong for this process... In other news I am on soft foods and about 70% of what I eat is relatively fine. I'm still taking nausea meds on and off. I still keep finding foods that piss everything off, my tiny tummy is PICKY. Fish still works best of all which still strikes me as all sorts of weird since I never liked it before. My tastebuds are still behaving strangely. And I really want a muffin but I can't have it because DS patients have to low carb it. *sighs wistfully* I picked up some of the Devotion brand protein that you can bake with. Maybe I'll be able to make a muffin when they arrive?!

    July 2023 Surgery Buddies UPDATES!!!

I had my surgery July 4th and the good news is that I am down 60lbs but the bad news is that I ended up between July 3rd and Nov 1st spending 12.5 weeks in hospital with complications following the surgery. I had pancreatitis and then also got infections as the surgery didn't completely close my stomach so I ended up with a small hole. Ended up having a number of gastroscopes, tubes fitted to my stomach and back to drain the infection and now have an internal tube fitted in my stomach, which will eventually (I hope) make its own way out as my stomach heals. Had really bad reflux until about two weeks ago when I started taking tablets with simeticone so it has eased considerably. Still in pain often, feels like my stomach is either bruised or pulled muscles. It is great to have lost the weight, especially as the hospital had me on feeding tubes with nutrients etc., but at the present time I feel like I would not recommend this surgery to anyone unless it was life or death. I lost the last few months of my life basically and know that the trauma is effecting me, can't sleep much (partly due to the pain and partly due to not being able to shift the hours the nurses would wake me), feel exhausted and also feel a bit weepy at times.
  8. I need support with my personal situation. I have had to wait to long to receive an adjustment after a small set back with un related health complications with fluid in my lungs after a bad chest cold.

  9. This site is such a wealdh of information and place to air things that cannot always be said. I am not talking about this decision until after the fact. I have 2 frienda at work who know , one had bypass and was instramental in helping me make this decision, the other is a good friend. both respect me not wating everyone to know. Only me husband and daughter know right noe, I wil probable tell my son once the surgery is scheduled. The rest of my family , well I will tell my sister after I have it done. She will freak out, and bonbard me with well-meaning articles about the surgical complications. Anyway it is really cool tho have this network of friends to share with.Thank you both.

  10. Hi Bardy! Congrats on all of your weight loss!! I can't wait for the day I can rejoice for being in a size 10! Hope you get those little complications ironed out..but glad you're doing much better! Take care, love! =D

  11. I would have this procedure done 100 times over. In my own eyes I'm a complete success with no complications! started out at 208 down to 114 today. WOO Hoo

  12. Sorry for the delay in response. I certainly hope that your surgery went well. Dr. Fox was an excellent surgeon and has great aftercare. As long as you follow what you are supposed to do you should not have any complications. I haven't had any issues physically with the band. The only thing that I have had problems with is in the morning I have to drink something hot before I eat because I feel super restricted during that time. I have finally given up all bread and pastas and Dr. Fox will stay on you regarding those. I like hime because he is very honest and doesn't baby like some other surgeons I know. He has stayed on me with my weight loss. Some other things he tells you to stay away from is cheese. I am here if you have any questions or need to talk. I am so happy I had the surgery. I am 16 months post op and I have lost 45 lbs which is my halfway goal. It is a slow process but that is the way it should be. Let me know how things went! And Congrats!!!!

  13. Oh no! I am so sorry to hear! That has to be so fustrating for you! I know you must have anger feelings at yourself as well as the doctor for scheduling it out to May, but at least you don't have to worry about fighting infection complications that can make the experience even worse! I feel for you so much because I know how I would feel! I hope you can at least eat something you can enjoy for a few days before you must go back on the diet!

  14. Thanks Acidic! I feel the same about making contact with fellow Perth people. I've tried to get a support group happening a couple of times but haven't had much response, so I just make do with chatting to other Sandgropers in the forum where I can.

Feel free to ask about anything - I've had a pretty good run of things but have also had a couple of minor complications along the way, so might be able to help out in a few different circumstances.

    Good luck with your journey!

  15. I just read your latest Blog and am totally inspired! Thank you. I had mine done on 5/8/09, but had a few complications. I go in on 6/19 for my first fill. I lost about 24 lbs, but since the swelling has subsided, I can eat anything and everything that I want. Not Good! I am a hairstylist and cannot wait until I can dress Rockabilly. Congrats to you!! -Lori

  16. HAHA! You look much better than me but I'm trying to get there! I definitely eat enough to maintain weight instead of lose right now but I had a complication so I had to unfill a little...but in 2 weeks it will all be back in and I'll have restriction again! Plus I dealt with some depression issues last month but now I'm back with a smile on my face and back in the gym! I did 1 hour on the treadmill yesterday, 3.11 miles, and I wanna go back tonight and do cardio + weights. What do your workouts look like? Thanks for the compliments...

  17. How you doing there snowball ... any complications yet ? Happy with the band ? :) Jan in New Hampshire

  18. I joined a gym near my house but can't bring myself to go becuase I feel to fat. I know it's stupid but these are the thoughts I have. I started on the scale at 310 and have been between 277-281 for two weeks or so...frustrating. I'm just so anxious to see myself thin and feel the energy that comes with it that I stress myself out. I just want to see more weight come off but I guess I have to start working out to see more results. I do thank God that I haven't had any complications to date. I know things could always be worse. On Friday when I met with my surgeon I told her I thought that the first fill she gave me must have not gone in my port because I felt nothing and felt like I could've eaten a horse.

    Any suggestions!

  19. Hey LadyDiva, thank you and I've lost about 32lbs so far. I haven't expierenced any hair loss but I was told from my doctor that as long as you get your protein in then you should be fine. Trust me I make sure I get that in!! Good luck tomorrow with your doctor. I'll be honest, I have no regrets so far. The only small complication I'm having right now is left shoulder pain when I eat. Other than that, this was the best decision I ever made. :) Keep in touch!

  21. Hi there, my name is Candace and I'm going to be starting I guess they say the "options" classes through kaiser. I really need this lap band to loose weight, but i'm scared about the surgery itself..can you tell me, were you in a lot of pain when you woke up? What about after, any complications? Vomiting, heartburn etc....? Thanks bunch...

  22. Hi Plum,

My approval process wasn't too complicated at all. I had to submit all of the required documents( which consisted of a psych evaluation, nutrition consult, bloodwork, referral from my primary doctor, EKG, and abdominal ultrasound. I waited about 2 weeks for approval.

  23. Hello everyone! I had my lap band surgery (Realize Band) on January 4th of 2008. So far, I've lost 30 pounds and would love to lose another 35, but will be happy with 20. At this point I'm nearly 6 months out and have lost some momentum and motivation. I'm trying to remedy that by forming a partnership with a young woman whom I met in my pre-op classes. She and I had surgery on the same day and were in recovery together. We keep in touch by email and are going to meet in person tomorrow (first time we've seen each other since our post-op class) and I'm excited about that.

It 's taken me a long time to feel restriction and so far I've had five fills and have 7.5cc's in my 9cc band. I go for another fill next week, which will probably put me at 8cc's. I'm so hoping to find my "sweet spot" if there is such a thing. I've been through a lot of ups & downs in the last few months, but overall am very happy that I had the surgery and have had no complications or side effects (other than losing weight & that's a good thing).

I really can use all of the encouragement, suggestions and moral support that's available through this site. I'll be happy to keep in touch with any of you who want & need encouragement too. I've come so far, I can't give up now.

  24. Maggie,

I'm sorry about the set-back. But on the other hand, although the delay is aggravating, its better to make sure that everything will be fine once you are in surgery. You don't want to go through surgery and have complications. I will keep you in my prayers. Lets not worry about tomorrow, today is full of enough problems as it is, just take it one day at a time.

    Phyllis

  25. I have not had the lapband yet, I am scheduled for surgery on wed the 30th. I like the idea of the lapband better because there is no rerouting or removal of organs, and if complications arise, the lapband is removable.
