  1. Having Lap Band surgery, it soon became difficult to eat Red meat, and my Dr. concurred it would..... For years, my cardiologist and other Dr.'s have been trying to get to to cut back on my meat consumption for health reasons.... Seeing how Red Meat is not very band friendly, and it was something other people wanted me to do, I stopped eating it altogether....that has been over 3 years now. I would not say I am a vegetarian, I still eat chicken and fish...but since I am eating so little due to the surgery, I am very conscious of what I do eat and I am eating less and less chicken.... Some people become vegetarians - vegans for moral reasons, for me it is purely for health reasons and I have been able to tell the difference.... BTW, I also cannot eat things made from flour/dough such as breads, Pasta, etc...no rice either...
  2. Hi Gigi, I'm new to the forum and just completed my 1 month post plication. I wanted to ask you about the new foods you may have introduced too soon. Did they have any particular characteristic, i.e. fatty, spicey, etc.? I ask because yesterday I had a painful experience. I tried to eat half a burger. I'm vegetarian and gluten free, so the burger was healthy, but for me, I just wanted to eat it too much and I ate it toooooo fast. That did NOT feel good. I had to walk around a lot after that and I just felt gassy. It was a great lesson but I really hated having to learn it like that. Now I know that for me, it's just too soon for half a burger. If I am not in control of the speed at which I eat my meals, then I am for the mean time, omitting that food until I have learned more self control. That being said, tonight I had half of a lean cuisine 5 cheese rigatone and that was nice and controlled. Continued success on your plication journey! 41 lbs in 1 month?? WOW!!

    How do you look normal?

I'm pre-op but I think we believe people pay more attention to what we are eating (or not eating) than they are. I would not put more on your plate - that would seem more noticeable and you could end up eating more than you should. If anyone questions what you are eating tell them you are eating healthy. And - so many people have allergies, intolerance, preferences (vegetarian, gluten-free, no "white" foods), etc. that it's unusual to find anyone eating what would be considered "normal".

    Supportive and Insecure

I have been dealing with this a bit too..and I've not had surgery yet. My husband (been together 29 years) started with the "when you get skinny you'll leave me" crap right from the get-go. I've yo-yo'd in weight for most of the 29 years we've been together, he only recently has gained extra weight (within the last 5-7 years). Sometimes I get frustrated with constantly having to reassure him that I'm not going anywhere. I'm hopeful that any success I have will inspire him to join me in getting healthier. When I look ahead to life after surgery, I see him right by my side, not some other man. I see us being more active together, maybe some fun competition once in a while, instead of him setting on the couch while I'm suggesting how nice a walk would be and wouldn't he like to accompany me? He has stuck it out for all my crazy diet changes (low carb, low calorie, south beach, vegetarian, vegan) in the past, I know he can weather this upcoming change. It is MY choice to do this though, he is completely against it, worries about my safety and outcome (sometimes expressed harshly) but even so I am always offering little bits of information at a time, because I want to include him...I still WANT his support, his encouragement, even though I'm prepared to do this without it. I want my successes to be his successes too! All in time I guess, you can lead a horse to water, but you can't make him drink!

    Protein for vegetarians

Vegetarian here. I do eat eggs, but I also like plain, greek yogurt. FAGE 0% is brand of choice. For Protein supplement I prefer Isopure unflavored and my nutra bullet. It is plain, 100% whey protein isolate with no added flavorings or sugars. I mix the Isopure with yogurt, with vegetable broth, coffee, tea, etc.. I also eat bean, legumes, seitan, tofu, tempeh, dark green leafy veg. such as spinach, kale or broccoli, and cheese. I am allergic to most artificial sweeteners. I can occasionally use sucralose aka splenda, but try not use it often. I prefer to use raw, locally sourced honey but do not use it often. I use the Isopure and make my own Protein drinks. Typically it's yogurt, Protein powder, fruit, spinach and Water. I can also tolerate the Isopure green tea, black and coconut protein drinks. If you are having trouble with nausea, call your doctor and get a prescription for that.
  6. Hi Della, Are you are you vegetarian or vegan? There is a ton of protein rich soy products available from Gardein, Morning Star, etc that are pretty delicious. Also, there is a product called Unjury that is unflavored/unsweetened that is 21 grams per scoop that I have been adding to soups, stews, etc. Their "chicken soup" flavor doesn't contain any animal products other than whey.

to go vegan or not to go vegan!

I'm speaking as a by-choice 16 year vegetarian and I do not recommend going vegan cold-turkey (per se). You'll hate it and you won't stick to it. Instead of totally altering your diet just make a few minor modifications (recommended by the Mayo clinic): Eat more: oatmeal, high Fiber foods, fish, walnuts, almonds, and other nuts, olive oil, and any foods with added plant sterols (margarines, orange juice, yogurt drinks). Eat less: full fat dairy (switch to low fat or half low/no fat and half full fat), processed foods like Cookies, crakers, and cakes, fatty cuts of meat, and eggs. You can still eat what you normally do, just alter the quantity and type slightly.

    Protein and fluids!

My goal is also 90 grams of protein per day, but I haven't gotten that even once in the last 2 months since my surgery. I asked why it was so high from my nutritionist, and she said that it had to do with my weight since I was a very big girl. There was something else as well, but I can't really remember now. The only thing I found that helps me is drinking 2 protein drinks a day to help add to the protein total. At best I can get around 50 grams of protein, but like you I eat so little that it's very difficult to get it at all. I'm a vegetarian, but have decided to start adding fish into my diet simply because I'm not able to get the protein that I need. Sent from my H60-L04 using BariatricPal mobile app
  9. I am really looking for some insight & encouragement from people who have succeeded, or are further along than myself, or are finding themselves in a similar situation. I am 9 months out. I've lost 111 lbs. I have gone from a size 34 to a size 22. That is all well & good, but I have found myself in some sort of slump. I think that it happened sometime after the 6 month mark. I was determined to lose 100 lbs. in my first 6 months & I did that. I lost 101. Three months later I am down just 10 more pounds. My weight has never gone up, but I have had many weeks of no loss at all. I've had my missteps along the way...junk food a few times, dehydrated to the point of hospitalization once. I have just found that I am not as vigilant as I use to be. I never feel hungry anymore so when I'm busy or stressed food becomes a hassle & it's much easier to skip eating altogether than choosing a healthy or unhealthy option. I still have over 100 lbs. more to lose & I don't want to get stuck in this place that I am. Even when I try to eat well, as a vegetarian, I find myself really missing the mark on protein. I have a lot on my plate (proverbial not literal) right now. My boyfriend & I are closing on our first home on Thursday. I am going back to work full-time starting Monday after not working at all for 4 years. Then we're moving next Saturday. It's a lot & I'm overwhelmed. I'm just so much better at taking care of others than taking care of myself. Has anyone been in a similar place? Or maybe someone just has some good advice? I never thought that I would be that person who forgets to eat or can't be bothered. That's what has happened, though, and I'm not quite sure how to get restarted. Tomorrow I need to have a tooth pulled. What a joy on the day before our house closing. I'm assuming getting a tooth pulled will limit what I am able to eat. So, maybe a liquid protein reset? Just hoping I'm not alone out here.
  10. I developed lactose intolerance, too. First find a lactose free shake. I mix with coffee, tea, Water, soy milk, hemp milk, juice...just find something that works with your shake. This will help immensely. Then you just shift to a Protein heavy diet, and yes, it's a challenge in soft foods. Scrambled eggs...but you likely won't be able to hold much of them because they're dense. I ate tuna, refried Beans, soy yogurt, hardboiled eggs (and egg salad)...things like that. Some time before a year I was able to eat hard cheeses again. Now I only have to avoid ice cream, heavy cream (including sauces made with it) and a glass of milk. I can have small amounts of Lactaid milk on Cereal or in a sauce or something but I can't have it alone. You can try the pills and see if they help. You can also see if the Lactaid milk, cottage cheese, etc. will work for you. They don't work for me at all. Also remember that there's only a trace amount of dairy (or none at all) in fake dairy products made for vegans and vegetarians. There are options out there, you just have to find what works for you. ~Cheri

    Dr. Lopez

I had my surgery in Mexico with Dr Ortiz who also uses the Oasis Hospital. The hospital is small but very nice.It is all done in pink, the rooms hallways linens bathrooms but it is nice. The nurses there are awesome. They all speak perfect english and they wait on you hand and foot.I never needed to ring my nurses button once. You will find your care there will be better then here in the US. If you are taking someone with you just know that the hospital cafeteria is all vegetarian. There is no meat! My hubby is a huge meat eater. I new this ahead of time so we brought some Snacks with us for my hubby. There is also a Domino's pizza close by that he walked to one night to get pizza. I hope this info helps Best of Luck to you Michelle 4/6/04 265/244.5/160ish Dr Ortiz

Do you have to do low carb/Keto?

There is no reason to do any of those fad diets that you hear about online (Atkins/keto, etc.) and generally long term most do better without getting involved in those. Your sleeve works just fine on most any diet that you may choose, but the important part is what will you stick with long term that will allow you to eat sensibly and control your weight. I second the motion to discuss this with a dietician, particularly if you are new to vegan/vegetarian as there are nutritional issues that one needs to address - plant vs. animal proteins, iron, etc. It is difficult to do early on owing to the low protein density of plant proteins, but after a few months is quite workable. A couple of specific references to look for is Dr. Alvarez on Youtube and other social media, who is a Mexico based sleeve surgeon and is also vegan and helps many of his patients take that approach if they are so inclined, and Dr. Matthew Weiner, also on Youtube, who, while not stictly vegetarian, does advocate a veg first approach to his WLS and weight control patients. Both are useful in helping take a non-traditional WLS approach

    Forgot diet plan

Programs vary all over the map in many areas, though the common elements are: Protein - consistent with need, but generally 60-80 g for women (though shorter than average women can do fine in the 50's) and 80-100 g for men. Protein need is most closely associated with lean body mass, hence the difference between men's and women's needs. Eat protein first, then veggies, fruits and starches Eat slowly, chew well Don't drink calories (protein drinks excepted, though you won't need to do them at this point) Avoid drinking with meals and for 30 minutes after meals. Drink a minimum of 64 oz, though the need is often higher depending upon activity and weather. Those are the things that are common to most plans. Minimizing sugar intake is often sited and sometimes a number is put on it; likewise, carb numbers are occasionally specified, though those can be deceiving and best not dwelt on. Calories are sometimes specified in programs and sometimes not. Those that work best seem to cluster in the 6-800 calorie range, but that is hard to maintain in a regain recovery program. It is best to work with your individual metabolic need, which again can be quite variable; Try for 1000-1200 and see how that goes; 12-1500 is often a maintenance level for many women. Keto and vegan/vegetarian are largely irrelevant - they are more lifestyle type diets that don't have any inherent weigtloss properties, though they can be used if one keeps the calories low enough. The key factor is what kind of diet will help you stay away from the high calorie/low nutrition junk that promotes weight gain. Good luck in your endeavor....

    How to use tofu.....

My mom cooked with tofu (that is before her major stroke almost 2 yrs ago which landed her in a nursing home that doesn't do tofu) frequently. You're right, it picks up the flavors of whatever it's cooked with (like a sponge) and to me, it actually tastes like a sponge. I don't like soybeans in any way shape or form. Including the elusively "yummy" hummus. Tastes like cat food to me. But I know many a vegetarian that would starve without it. Good luck cooking!
  16. I am a vegetarian but 2 years ago on Pintrest all my friends were posting paleo diets and I was just like Hehehe I cook meat for my family but my pouch refuses it adamantly !!!

i ate really food and regret every bite!!!

A good trick for avoiding this in this type of setting is to ask the venue in advance for a vegetarian plate. I find myself in this situation quite often and many times the vegetarian alternative is much easier to eat, although it may not really give you much Protein. So I just plan and eat before or after (protein) and then I will cut up the veggies, eat some and move some around as to not draw attention at this type of event. I feel your pain though, I had a terrible experience with rubber chicken before I learned this trick.

    90/10 Diet??

I am a vegetarian, so my diet is very different from most people here. I also have a milk allergy, so I generally do not consume milk products except yogurt, which for some reason does not make me cough, sneeze, itch, etc... Protein is the big challenge in a veg diet, especially since a lot of veg protein is also full of carbs. I do watch my carbs in that I don't eat bread, only have Pasta once a month, eat who grains like brown rice and quinoa. This actually works well for me because I feel foggy and listless when I restrict carbs too much. I will generally have a cup of coffee, then wait until I get hungry for Breakfast. I often have a tofu scramble or 1/2 Amy's veggie burrito for breakfast, and the other 1/2 for lunch. I will generally have a serving of fresh fruit with lunch. If I get hungry before dinner, I have raw veggies with a dip made of low fat Greek yogurt, buttermilk, and herbs. I keep the snack at around 100 calories. Occasionally, I will have a few walnuts and an apple for snack instead. If my allergies are doing okay, I might have a low fat mozzarella stick. Dinner is typically a stir fry with tofu or replacement meat, a salad with quinoa and nuts, a bowl of homemade Soup with some kind of Beans and a tiny bit of pasta, a veggie chili with beans, or a low fat burrito bowl. If I get the munchies, I may have some fruit or a few Mary's Gone Crackers sticks and twigs, which are whole grain and have protein. I will say that my big focus is consuming plenty of fruits and veggies b/c they are low cal, filling and gives me plenty of cancer fighting nutrients. My diet works for me. Wine is my big downfall. I am trying to stay away 100% b/c it makes me bloat and adds too many extra calories.

    protein intolerance

I went to the Vitamin shoppe today and decided on spirutein, it is a blend of rice protein, pea protein, and soy protein isolate. I bought the banana one. I didn't have high hopes for it, infact I didnt have any hope at all for it because so many I've tried have not worked. But I was wrong, it smelled like a banana split, and it was really good. Like not just "its tolerable but I have to get it down" but I actually enjoyed drinking it. It came out green tinted cuz of the pea protein, but tasted nothing like peas at all. It only has 14 grams per scoop, but I figured some protein was better thank no protein at all. After consuming it, I perked up like a watered plant (I have had zero protein since sunday). I too am concerned about the soy, b/c of my fam history of breast cancer and my thyroid issues, but as I said I only have till tuesday and then I can start eating yogurt and ff sf puding, and strained cream Soups, and other thin pureed stuff, so I wont need to rely on the soy as my sole protein source-I mean-one vanilla chobani has 14g protein! (i hope i tolerate the yogurt ok, if not I will have to find an alternative). and then when I get on solids a 3 wks, I wont need it anymore! they encourage you to get ur protein from solid foods like fish and meat etc. they don't want you to rely on Protein shakes and say they should not be used for meals unless you are really pressed for time. So its not like I will be eating soy for the rest of my life (b/c I am not a vegetarian like a lot of people here are), just a few weeks, so I am not really worried.
  20. So we all know plane food isn't the best, but have you requested a specific dietary requirement post sleeve? If so, what meals did you order? I'll be travelling in the near future and would rather something light, so I'm considering the vegetarian meal option.

    Forks Over Knives ~ Documentary

I have read the book. Some interesting points brought up. I tried going vegetarian, but I like my meat based protein (poultry and seafood). I am only 3 weeks post op, so when my diet is freed up a bit, I will do plant based protein as well....believe it or not, I am craving edemame (sp?). I believe "everything in moderation." I enjoy poultry or seafood over beef, which can get you burned at the "steak", living here in the midwest! Extremes can get us all in trouble.
  22. I agree with Betsy B! I'm a vegetarian so protein is way important for me to get daily.

10 months out and not happy

I'd forgotten how helpful I found your blog, and now that I'm a week post-op, even more so. It just lays it out in a wonderfully straight, easy to follow path. Thanks again. I'm 60 and I look forward to that re-newed energy you spoke of; it would be amazing to do things like go swimming without fear of taking my shirt off in public, things like that. My plan necessitates that I finally learn to cook and to get in the habit of cooking because my leaning would be towards vegetarianism; nothing moral here, simply for health., So here we go!!
  24. I've been a vegetarian for years and recently went vegan. It has truly helped with some of my medical issues. I had lap band surgery 2.5 years ago and am doing a sleeve conversion on July 29th. My pre-op diet starts today and need some help with a vegan plan. Any suggestions?
  25. My "go-to" mushies phase food was vegetarian refried beans with a bit of cheddar melted on the top. I also ate a lot of hummus and baba ganoush. A half cup of food one week out is probably a bit too much at this point. I was allowed one tablespoon at first. I'm four months out and only heat half cup servings.
