I just have collagen in my protein (it's not my source of protein, it's just added as extra). Like someone else said, it just helps the new growth. Using quality hair products does wonders for your hair. As well as regular trims. I like Tretinoin for my face. It helps with fine lines, hyper pigmentation, acne, dullness.... it's a mature woman's miracle cream. It's prescription only, but well worth it. For the rest of your skin, make sure to moisturize religiously. I do an in shower lotion and then another moisturizer once I'm dried off. I have noticed a big improvement with the texture of my skin. And I don't use anything overly special. Your multivitamin should already have biotin in it, so you shouldn't need to add any additional milligrams (brand specific). I use women's one a day vitamin, and it has 100% of the biotin I need.

It took me for ever to reach my goals. Like 3 + months. They just told me to do my best. Protein yogurts were my saviour, 2 of these and a pint of milk a day and I had all my protein. Drinking seemed to take all day and all my waking night too. I had my surgery in coldest winter, so hot drinks were easiest for me to manage, although they did get cold before I drank it all. After meals if I found myself thirsty, I would suck a popsicle , its a fluid. Once you can drink your ounces you will feel amazing. Its really worth while persevering, it does get easier soon I had to keep going back a stage because eating 'normal' foods was so difficult for me -

Thanks to all of you for your insights. I was doing the Ensure Max Protein drinks for the first two and half months. Now I find them very gag-inducing and have a hard time digesting them. The Electrolytes- yep, both in water and Gatorade Zero. I'm not sure I am eating enough--my portions are small, and I feel fine after a small plate, 1/2 protein, 1/4 veggies, 1/4 carbs. My wife has been great about making different dishes that are compatible with post-op lifestyle. I'm just not that hungry, though I'll still eat simply for fuel. When I first got out of surgery, I couldn't wait to eat real food again, but now, I think my system cannot handle the volume and in some cases the texture. Maybe this is also a result of hormonal/nervous system changes, I dunno. Yes, I have a good dietitian who is part of the surgeon's office, as well as an integrative medicine nurse/practitioner who does a different set of blood work at the same time I get blood work done for the surgeon. I'll be back up there for another post-op exam in a couple months. Sorry for the lag in my responding- i didn't get an email alert when a lot of you posted, I'll have to check my settings--in the meantime, the weather has broken here in Texas, finally. So, walking outdoors is possible. (It was 110F most of the summer here--brutal!). Now is the nice time to be here. PS: on the gym, I talked to the head trainer, and they are used to members who have gone thru physical rehab and coming back to the gym- they were fine with me taking things slowly and will work w/me. -

Unjury protein soups are my recommendation. I'm currently 5 days into a 14 day liquid diet and the soups are a life-saver. I don't like artificial sweeteners either and unjury has saved me when i would rather be hungry than have another shake 😂 My surgeon recommended the brand. -
The bariatric she is real and nothing will stop it. You need to make sure you stick to your protein amounts everyday because your hair needs it to produce new growth and grow (your hair can't produce protein but needs it). Collagen and biotin (as well as keratin_ are fantastic for helping your hair be softer, shinier, and healthier. BUT, it does nothing to actually prevent shedding or make it grow. Collagen is great for hair, skin, and nails as well as joints. For me, I use Codeage Platinum collagen powder. It has 5 kinds of collagen, biotin, keratin, hyaluronic acid, and vitamin c. It's amazing, and I've used it for almost 2 years. It's everything I need for hair, skin, nails, and joints. Another thing I take is MSM. It's amazing for joints, but it also helps thicken hair (which is something I need since I've had 2 bariatric surgeries and my hair is seriously thin). Also make sure you take vitamin E. That's another things that is fantastic for skin and can be beneficial for hair, as well. I also use Living Proof thickening shampoo and conditioner and dry shampoo. It helps give my hair volume, which I desperately need right now. Hope all of this helps!!!

It doesn’t matter if you take ages to drink or eat your protein. I would sip my protein shake & then high protein yoghurt drink for hours. Just sip, sip, sip. I also ate some things very slowly too - just dipping in a teaspoon & not a full spoonful. In fact I still take an hour to eat my high protein yoghurt. I wasn’t interested I eating or hungry for almost a year but I knew I had to eat & drink to at least be close to my goals. It actually helped me change my relationship with food - that maxim of eating to live not living to eat. (My surgeon was okay if I wasn’t hitting those goals for the first month or so as long as I was close & getting closer.) You can also boost your protein intake by adding protein powder to soups, your own smoothies, yoghurts, etc. I still can’t gulp down a glassful of liquid. One big mouthful or two swallows & that’s it & yes I still have to wait before I have another so I still sip all day long & I drink over night too. And I still take 39-45 minutes to eat what is about a recommended portion for a meal - like @sweetsmith78 about 8ozs of usually 3-4ozs protein & about 4oz steamed vegetables. In the beginning I was eating 1/4-1/3 a cup of food from purée for a meal & slowly increased to a cup at 6 months. It does get easier. During the first couple of months you’re still healing & your tummy is sensitive & fussy with certain tastes, smells or textures literally turning your tummy & being impossible to eat. Oh yeah, the protein shakes are awful. I forced myself to have one a day & then had soup. So glad to get to purées when I never touched a shake again. Did your dietician give you a list of foods you can eat? If not give them a call. There are some foods like certain fruits we’re advised to avoid while we’re healing. Smoothies are great. The high protein yoghurt I ate had a yoghurt drink too which I regularly had (25-30g protein). Yes, you still have to purée the soups. Everything must be extra smooth, no lumps, fibrous, bits, etc. so it just slides down into your tummy. You can purée a lot of things just keep them very runny by adding sauces, stock, gravy, mayo, milk, etc. And don’t worry you won’t be undernourished after 5 days. You’re likely feeling weak & lacking energy simply because of what is a pretty major surgery. Oh the constipation will be with you for a while. Try to keep on top of it. Add a soluble fibre to your soups or smoothies & take a stool softener or similar as needed to get things moving. I used to take something if I got to three days without pooping. Oh & don’t be surprised if your poop is small & you only go every two days - you’re not eating much at the moment.

Have you considered unflavored protein powder? You can add it to water or even sprinkle it on food or jello. Depending on what your dietician at the clinic where you have surgery says, you likely will be able to have a broth of some sort, since those are more savory that might be perfect for you and you could add unflavored protein powder to that as well just to boost the protein. -

Hello! I am new to this website and I would love some advice! I am hoping to be having surgery in November or December this year. I unfortunately am a picky eater (and drinker!) and am not a fan of the artificial sweeteners and stevia. I have tried a bunch of protein powders and drinks, and I am struggling to find one that I can drink! 😥 I LOVE Bocha Sweet and don't mind erythritol and Lakanto Monk Fruit seems to be just fine! I am REALLY struggling to find protein powders and drinks that I can use following surgery to get through the initial post op period. Does anyone have any recommendations, either for store bought ideas or recipes that I can use with the zero calorie sweeteners I do like? Thank you all so much in advance for your ideas and help! 😊

I'll have to try some Liquid IV. I'm so worried about getting dehydrated. On a really good day I may get 30-35 oz of fluids in. It's frustrating because they tell you to listen to your body and don't eat if you're not hungry, but then you feel like garbage if you don't get your protein and fluids in. I just don't know what to do. -

If you are drinking your protein this can count as your fluid intake (this is what my nutritionist told me) for the 1st couple of months. Try adding something like Drip Drops or Liquid IV to your water. Set a time for every 15 min to drink, even it’s a little sip. I’m over 5 years out & I still have a time set with the Baritastic app yo remind me to drink. -

The only thing stopping me is that I can only tolerate a few bites or a few sips of anything at a time. I tried clear protein and I just can't tolerate it. -

Hello all! Newbie here! I had gastric bypass surgery on August 8. Since then, I have not been able to meet my fluid or protein requirements, or even get close honestly. My Dr and dietitian just say "well, you have to." I'm still feeling weak and tired and just want to feel better! Does anyone have any tips, tricks, recipes (I'm on stage 3) that might help? -
I had the Sadi done in 2014. It's been a godsend. I lost 152 lbs over a year and stabilized at down 125lbs. The Sadi is a much better option then the traditional Hess DS since there are less issues with malabsortion, far fewer vitamins needed and it's a simple loop compared to Hess DS. You will find your issues in general to be similar to most other DS patients. Regarding your back pain, it has nothing to do with the Sadi procedure. You have probably been lying in a bed too long and needed to start walking. Good luck and enjoy the ride.

It is vertually impossible to gain weight on less calories than needed to sustain weight, perhaps a colonic enema? Otherwise, your body is retaining large amounts of water? It might be sleep eating, it happens. Seriously, it defies medical explanation, switch protein powder or premade drinks, maybe they are missed labeled. Stalls happen, the body defends itself, but gaining requires calaries, and more than your weight requires to sustain a weight. Maybe a family member doesn't want you losing and is secretly switching your food to stuff to gain weight. Think outside your body on this one, because if it isn't like gout or constpation, science says you can't gain weight. I would thing a jealous family member is screwing up your diet, sleep eating, or mislabeled food. Best of luck, I truly hope you figure this out. Maybe a new scale? -
Cherries have no protein, chicken was mine. I am 6 yrs out and still live by a rule, 10grams protein for 100 calories or no. I ask myself if I am eating for fun, or to live. Food is not a major enjoyment anymore. I don't even bring junk food like chips into my home. Try to eat fresh veggies and fruit, but only after I have my protein and water in, and then in moderation. I don't find food rewarding myself, I find it losing where I have won

I was retired, early retired due to medical disability, and choice. I took it easy for 1 week or 2, treated myself like an egg, but I was good togo very soon. I was on protein shakes, get the nectar brand, it has fruit flavor and mixes great with sugar free Walmart brand or Crystal light, and much cheaper than premixed. I made a huge picture, 8 scoops and filled 4 Gatorade 32 oz bottles, 400 calaries, 60 grams of protein, and 64 oz of water in 2 bottles. Just a little of. Each and good for day. I lost 38lbs the month before surgery, and averaged 20 to 25lbs a month. So my. Life really hadn't changed after surgery except I don't crave foods at all

Hello All! So grateful to have found this forum. I’m 5 days post-op. My dr didn’t recommend anytime on a clear liquid diet and instead put my straight into a purée diet. I’m feeling pretty nauseous and also just malnourished and constipated. I feel gross. I’m not actually repulsed by food. My husband had a plain sandwich that looked AMAZING. I tried pureeing a few recipes but have found that the easiest thing just seems to be blending up some plain Greek yogurt with some berries or 1/2 a kiwi and adding some high quality protein powder. Does anyone see any issue with me doing this each meal? I get grossed out by the prepackaged protein drinks and this feels a bit healthier. Any staple puréed meals I should try? Thinking about trying some oats.

Ditto to alllllllll the above. Collagen is great for hair, skin, and nails but it takes time and won't stop the "bariatric shed" from happening. I take Vital Protein's brand, I get it in a tub from Costco and throw it in my coffee every morning. It does help, but it takes time and consistency, especially for hair. As @Arabesque mentioned, hair is all dead stuff, so you won't see the benefits until it starts to grow out.

Stage, drinking water and protein drinks mainly. I eat eggs, beans, tonight 200 calories worth of vegetable soup. Maybe that stage 3 or 4 they seem the same.

Congratulations. You look fantastic. The hair loss usually lasts about 3 months +/- so you are likely nearing the end of it. Yay! I cut mine to just above my shoulders so a year or so later it was back to what it as in regard to thickness. Our starting stats are very much the same - I’m just an inch taller & weighed 5lbs more. I reached my goal at 6 months - BMI of 23 too. (And it seems we had our surgeries at about the sane age - 53??) Yes, I lost more than my goal but it was what my body wanted - my new set point. I’m 4 years out & pretty much maintained my weight (apart from a med glitch which caused a 2kg gain of which I’ve lost half of that so am about 1kg heavier than my initial stabilised weight). To maintain, I really just kept up with most of the eating habits I established while losing. My portions are larger now of course but are what are considered recommended portion sizes of what I eat. Lowish carbs (about 2 serves of whole/multi grains), lowish fat, low sugar (avoid a lot of it & sweeteners too), predominately low processed foods, average 60g protein & average 2L fluids. I eat about 1500 calories a day which is about right for some one my age, height, weight & activity level according to BMR calculators. I don’t consider this a diet, this is just how & what I eat which changed how I look at my eating. I’m not punishing myself or restricting what I eat with a diet. I don’t exercise as such but started to use resistance bands & do stretches about 10 months ago I think - 4 short sessions each day 5 or 6 times a week. I didn’t want muscles as such just definition in my arms & legs which I am achieving quite nicely. Also wanted to keep flexible & to support my back & oozing discs. Am jealous your back pain is gone. Unfortunately, weight loss hasn’t improved my back issues 😩.

It takes a lot of concentrated effort, over a long period of time, eating very large servings to stretch your tummy out. So you’ll be okay. As to how much you should eat (all because you can doesn’t mean you should) it’s best to check with your dietician because you’ll get different advice from others here - plans are different & we have different needs. For example I was told 1/4 to 1/3 cup from purée slowly increasing to a cup by 6 months. Best advice I ever got was not to eat until you feel full. It takes time for the full message to get through (about 20 minutes usually but more so while your cut nerves are still healing) so by the time you feel full, you’ve eaten too much and are over full. It’s one of the reasons we’re told to eat slowly. As to why you didn’t have a reaction, you may jus have had a lucky day. You may not tomorrow. Even four years out, there are times when my tummy says nope that’s more than enough, even if I’ve eaten less than my usual portion of that food & I feel uncomfortable or my restriction. Yesterday I ate a thin beef sausage & a little lettuce at a BBQ & my tummy protested for an hour after. Try not to skip meals. It’s so important for us to get in our protein, other nutrients, calories & fluids. Life can get busy sometimes so keep some protein shake mix, beef jerky, soup, protein bar, nuts, etc. that can be kept for a time in your bag, car, etc. as grab & go type meals/snacks for busy days.
