  1. It looks like there have been a lot of ppl who don't read. I eat 1000 calories or less and weigh 280. I was bulimic for years. I got the band and list then regained even though I was under 1000 caliries a day. I'm considering the surgery because the doctor says it changes your body's set point. My fear isn't that I won't lose, but that once again I'll regain because my body really wants to stick at this weight. I eat a whole foods diet, not a SAD. I do keto. I just don't lose. Sent from my SM-G935P using the BariatricPal App With a condition as unusual/clearly medical/atypical as yours, a public WLS forum where most of us got fat from overeating junk is probably not going to get you the responses you need and desire. Definitely come here for support and love as you go through the process, but as far as factual scientific advice? Your situation is so far out there in the atypical range, I'm sure there are very few here that are qualified to answer. Best to you!! I'm sure with your desire to succeed, you can make it happen. I wasn't the OP. I was just letting her know she's not alone and that there are said to be benefits for those who are not eating 2 meals at McDonalds for dinner and still unable to lose weight. However, I'm not really sure where else one would look if they were in my situation and looking for answers. I can't possibly be the only one in my situation. And doctors assume I'm showing them my food diary that shows whole foods and then running thru to get a milkshake. No one believes me. I don't care and im not offended. But when I do start a thread with questions it's because of can't possibly be the only one in my situation and I need help too. As far as the doctors are concerned there is no reason and I just need to exercise harder. I did that. 2 hours a day. Where else can I turn? Like I said I wasn't asking questions originally, but where else would I go? Sent from my SM-G935P using the BariatricPal App Hugs. That's why I added the OP part late in the game.

Sent from my SM-G935P using the BariatricPal App One thing I learned through this process is that my obesity is at least partly due to under eating as much as to overeating. Overeating is my bodies response to under eating (skipping meals, restricting, etc.). One of the biggest gifts of this program for me so far is a deeper understanding of nutrition and what my body really needs. Eating under 1000 calories in a day is no longer an option for me.

  6. I don't know how anyone could be overweight when they just need to get on a scale. We all know mental and emotional distress cannot be detrimental in any way. I mean if you have a 3 week stall, you are just as happy as a 10lb loss. Nobody ever has dove head first into a pint of ice cream, crying themselves to sleep thinking no matter what you do, you will always be fat. I mean, if some articles say it, you must do it. I guess I should tell everyone on keto that they can never lose weight eating all that fat. Research has shown low calorie is the only way. Sent from my SM-G930P using the BariatricPal App
  7. I have had episodes both pre and post. I find that sticking to a structured plan helps me. Currently I am loosely following a Keto plan. It eliminates many of my trigger foods. I find avoidance of certain foods and setting dietary and activity goals help me focus on the right things.

Any 2016 Type 1s out there?

I'm T1 on an insulin pump and got sleeved about 2 years ago. Was good for about a year, lost quite a bit and had energy and then my fibro got really bad and stopped working out, started eating crap again so gained a bit back. Started a keto diet a couple of weeks ago and that's helping, but I've cut down on my insulin quite a bit but still taking glucophage. I guess the sleeve is still good bc it limits how much i can eat otherwise would have gained more back. When i went for surgery though had to get off the pump and they didn't know how to control my bs so i was a mess (went to TJ for my surgery).
  9. I had mix feelings about this. For now, I've chosen to still but the same stuff in the grocery store. Our pantry is filled with Doritos, Pop Tarts and other stuff that I don't eat. I felt that my new way of living shouldn't translate over to punishment for the rest of the household. Even when I fire up the grill I still make much of the same old classics they love, yet I avoid. After all....I'll be faced with those same temptations outside the house, why not be able to flex & develop my self-control muscles in the safety of the house? I can certainly understand the opposite way of handling this, though. The only time I've ever successfully lost weight was when I followed strict Atkins. I ate over 2500 calories a day on that diet and lost almost 150 lbs in a year. But I lacked the will power to STAY on it. I'm seeing surgery as being the tool I need to not start eating crap again. I'm certainly not going to sabotage myself after going to such extremes. But yes, I lack the will power myself to never eat crap again unless I have another tool in place. For me, I have been easily able to stick to a low carb lifestyle post op, because I am not hungry and I can eat small portions. My issues with Atkins/Paleo/Keto etc has always been I was still hungry and over eating, even eating the right things. The sleeve makes it easy to stick to the lifestyle. I already had the will power but I was still over eating, and then I would stall and just quit. I can't quit with the sleeve. There is no WLS that will give you will power. You can eat around the sleeve, the RNY, lapband, all of them. DS is probably the only one you can't eat around because it is so extreme. Mentally you have to be in a place for WLS to work for you, or it won't. I think it is good you are asking a lot of the questions you are asking but you don't really seem ready for WLS. It seems like something you are agreeing to because your healthy is failing, but you don't really seem to be at the end of your rope with your weight yet. JMO Agreed. The lack of hunger once post-op has been a much appreciated aspect. Sounds good. Remember....we were answering your original question. You've taken it to a new level of resolve, which is all very good. The other tool that I've found to be highly effective with losing fat: EXERCISE In fact, I'd rank the post-op tools in the following order of importance: 1) Lack of hunger 2) Exercise 3) Restriction The way exercise helps me is on several levels. One is in terms of understanding what a calorie feels like. Punch in your stats on any treadmill or elliptical and hop on and do some work for an hour. Get off and see that you burned enough calories for 2 candy bars and you'll never again won't a candy bar. You'll equate that sweat effort with willpower and you'll understand how bad junk food is. Another way is in how you'll feel after sustained exercise. You'll feel better all day....and even better the next. Add some weight training into the deal and you will really start to feel GOOD. The effect it has on your body will soon become visible. Tone and structure. Improved posture. An easier stride. Clothes fit better. All the sudden you'll SEE it. Others will see it, too. It becomes another way that your willpower to resist junk food is strengthened. You'll be a whole new person before you know it. It can occur overnight, literally. For me.....it happened when I was sitting up in my easy chair one night. I couldn't make it to bed. I couldn't do much else but sit in that chair. I'd been sitting there for six weeks. Six weeks of going to PT sessions and taking meds to get past a back injury. One night I couldn't sleep.....just like the night before.....the meds and the pain had me wide awake. I decided that night to make a change. To find a way to get my legs beneath me and to change. By the time the sun came up the next morning I had a gameplan. I knew that wls would be part of it. I lost a nice chunk of weight in the next couple months and then had my VSG. It's been game-on ever since. It all came back to that one night.....everything that's occurred since was set in motion on that night. I'll never forget how bad I hurt then....unable to move or even breath deeply without crazy pain. Never again will I let fat be a contributor to that type of situation. I want this stuff burned off and turned into fuel. I have a hopeful eye to the future of how I'll adjust my diet once my body has burned the onboard fat for fuel. It'll be an interesting place to be.....another phase to live in. Looking forward to that.

    Keto Help Needed

I don't follow a keto diet but I have a cousin (non-WLS) who is doing so. 30g of fat is definitely not Keto. Her fat intake is the highest (more like 60-70% of her diet I think). Her Protein is "moderate" and her carbs are less than 30g daily. I don't know her total calorie count but it is more than we take in. My point just being that if you are wanting to do keto, your fat is too low. For what it's worth, at 1 year post-op, I am about 1200 calories with 115g protein / 45-50g fat / 80-85g carbs. Some here are able to do higher carbs once in maintenance. My NUT says my carbs and protein should be equal (but I have never really followed that).

    Keto Help Needed

the one thing i like about keto is it doesn't have to be precise to work. i was low carb for the first about 5 months. then i started increasing my fat. (at will, no counting) and my weight started coming off again. i have no idea how much of anything i consume and i know that's not the recommended way so don't do what i do but im down 85lbs and the the tweaks have worked for me. low carb, high fat, low sugar (p.s. im strict on the sugar i don't even do carrots or corn or beets) good luck!
  13. Question for those following the Keto Diet. I'm curious as to how much fat you consume. I'm getting in roughly 600 to 800 calories a day, 19 to 25 carbs, 75+ Protein, and roughly 30 grams of fat. I've had some say that's too much, and others tell me it's way too low. Any thoughts/advice? Please and thank you. Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App

    ITCHY!

I came to suggest the same as @@KristenLe - keto rash. It can be a pain! Add more healthy fats - you can mix olive oil into your cottage cheese for a boost, or I do avocado drizzled with olive oil.
  15. Exercise mainly helps me maintain my weight versus lose. In fact when I'm dieting, I generally cut back on exercise initially as I want to do just enough to maintain my muscle mass versus going catabolic and losing muscle. Op you mentioned you are consistently eating low carb but that you eat around 70 grams of Protein, that's approximately 300 cals. At 1200 cals- something is amiss. Are you eating more carbs? What are your macros? If you are low carb--Have you tested your urine for ketones? When I am in maintenance, my protein is over 100 grams a days, I try to keep carbs around 100-120 and my fats are somewhere around 30 and I workout 4-5 days a week. When dieting, as I am currently (HS reunion is next month!), I cut carbs to around 50, up fats to around 50 and maintain or up my protein some. I cut my workouts down to 2-3 days a week. In the end, I eat less because the extra fat keeps me full longer. I also add a low dose EC stack (Google Lyle McDonald) to keep my metabolism going and I make sure my fluids and Vitamins are on point. I also test my urine to validate that I am burning fat or not and adjust my macros accordingly. Going with a modified Keto diet is my choice on this time as I am trying to lean out but I believe other approaches (e.g. intermittent fasting) can be effective as well so do what you prefer. Regarding a "broken" metabolism all I will say is that yes there is metabolic adaptation and that once a diet is over expect to spend that equal amount of time reversing out of it. My current diet will run 8 weeks, I will spend 8 weeks afterward adjusting my macros back toward pre-diet ratios. I recommend reading more about metabolism at Eat To Perform or by listening to their podcast.
  16. Also side note - when I did Keto for 2 weeks my stress levels normalized despite life being insane and I lost 7 lbs. Basically I ate bacon, eggs, cheese, cottage cheese etc and drank a gallon of Water a day.

    Surgery day!

anywho on a more productive note. ive stopped working out. i was stalled at 150 for three weeks. stopped working out last week. kept eating keto and adding more fat and this week i've lost 2lbs so maybe my body just needed a break or needed more fat. all a process of trial and error so this has been the result. not going to work out till maybe next week.
  18. @@reachbree I'm lucky that most of the people I know have good manners and don't ask me stupid questions. When people see me they just usually comment that I look pretty (not tooting my own horn, or that I look great. People really rarely ask me how I lost weight. Most of the people I know are thin and they don't care. The 2 people that asked I told them low carb/keto and walking. I'm lucky that most of the people I know have good manners and don't ask me stupid questions.
  19. I don't think surgery is a good option to lose 30 pounds so you made the right choice. check out https://www.reddit.com/r/keto/ you can probably drop that weight in a few months with keto, and keto is an easy way to eat for the rest of your life. Good luck.

How did you feel two months post-op?

@@Clarevoyant You should be fine. They have Protein shakes and bars in the UK just like in America. You can get a salad with grilled meat and eat the meat off anywhere. 2 months post op your energy levels should be rising. You will have to make sure you get enough calories in each day for energy. In London you will be forced to walk a lot, unless you already live in NY or Chicago, it should really help with your weight loss. I am really excited for you that you have this opportunity. I wouldn't pass it up. Things to remember eating out, you can always get a sandwich, they usually have 2-4 ounce meat portions, and just eat the meat I do it all the time. It is an easy way to control how much you are eating out, and to get cold cuts. You can eat the top off of pizza. Like I said before get a salad with meat and eat all the meat first. This keto blogger lives in the UK so you might find some hints on here where to shop. http://ketodietapp.com/Blog 2 low carb UK restaurant reviews http://ketotheukway.blogspot.com/search/label/Restaurant%20Reviews Keto UK boards https://www.reddit.com/r/ketouk Just do your research and have a plan. If you have a plan you can always stay on plan. For example I know almost every restaurant has a chicken Cesar salad, so if there is nothing else I can eat on the menu I know I can get one and eat the meat off. Even slumming it at a casual place, they will have some kind of sandwich with cold cuts I can eat. If push comes to shove and you are stuck with street vendors, a kabob is better choice than fish and chips. Also the food in Europe tastes so much better than the US, you will really enjoy that post-op. Good Luck!

    ketogenic/keto diet

I follow a keto diet. Not sure about the muscle thing, but it's the only way I can actually lose weight. There are a couple keto groups on facebook. They have a lot of good info in the pinned posts. https://www.facebook.com/groups/ketogenicsuccess/ https://www.facebook.com/groups/407740426088952/

    ketogenic/keto diet

I was on a keto diet months before I had surgery. There are a few forums on reddit dedicated to keto and they are great sources of information. You may want to research cyclical keto which allows for periodic carb increases for those who do heavy lifting. This is something many body builders do.
  25. whoa whoa whoa. i have been reading about carbs and muscle building and stuff cuz im quite flabby after losing my first 80lbs and i want to tone but i haven't been eating carbs. anyways i just looked up that you CAN build muscle on a keto diet but when i went to a sample menu it showed WAY more fat than i've been eating! is anyone else doing this type of diet? are you building muscle? who knows about this?? help! lol
