    My Long Journey Alone

My surgical weight loss center sucked! The girl that handled insurance couldn't even get the right documents faxed to the insurance company. I eventually just faxed the missing documents to the insurance company myself. Then after surgery I never saw my surgeon for follow ups - I always got stuck with some fill in doctor. In truth unfortunately most businesses today have zero customer service and suck. Bariatric surgery is a business and they are there to take your money. Don't let a crappy doctors office make you feel like giving up. Be strong and fight for your health! You got this!

    Woohoo!

19 days post procedure and 25.1 pounds lighter! I haven't been hungry hardly at all and my stomach pains from the hernia repairs are much better. I am sooooooo glad I did this. I get my 1st fill in two weeks. I realize that the weight loss will slow down to 2 to 3 pounds a week once I get in my rhythm, but it is sure exciting for now.:wink2::thumbup::wink2:
  3. Thank you so much for the information. I really appreciate your advice. If I get the procedure done here in our province everything is covered through our health care system, but if I go outside of our province/country I will have to cover cost. I had contacted my insurance company and they do not cover the lap band but will cover stay in the hospital. Irregardless of the cost I will be still having the lap band done. I have complete one course regarding nutrition, and will be looking for anything that will help me with my goal to become healthy. Congradulations on your success with your weight loss. I am so excited, I cannot wait until the pounds start melting off.
  4. I had my band placed 3/3/08. I spent 3 days in the hospital for complications of pain/vomiting. To date i have not lost one ounce. My daily calories are 800 to 1000 and I am getting in about 45-60 grams of Protein daily. I still have constant pain at the port site which at times is almost unbearable. (I have an extremely high pain tolerance so this concerns me, but my doctor has no thoughts.) Is there anyone else who has had no weight loss in the first 2 weeks? What am I doing wrong.

    Plateau ALREADY????????

What you are experiencing is very common and completely normal. There is a pretty good chance that you will not lose any more weight (and may gain a little) until your first adjustment. Many doctors put the band in empty, so you are probably getting little to no restriction right now. Also, the first 6 post-op weeks are really for healing, not necessarily for optimal weight loss. Consider any weight loss a bonus. In the 2 weeks after my surgery, I lost 16 pounds. Then in the next 2 weeks (soft food stage), I lost nothing. Then when I added regular food, I gained 2 pounds! Finally, at the 6 week mark, I got my first adjustment, and within 4 days, I was down 3 pounds. Whew! This seems to be a pretty common pattern, so don't sweat it! Just eat as healthy as possible for now...lots of Protein for healing, and wait patiently for your first fill.
  6. Sorry if I posted this in the wrong place but...I know most surgeons will let you choose which kind of band they put in but can we also have a say in how big of a band ( cc size) we can have and is there a difference in weight loss as far as that goes? I read most people have 10cc bands but I have read that a few people have 14cc bands. Does anyone know why there would be different sizes? I'm guessing a 14 cc band would allow for more fills so I figure that means that the weight loss might not slow as quickly as it would with a 10 cc band? Please correct me if I'm wrong. I know hardly anything about this stuff. Thanks in advance!:girl_hug:
  7. I am having the same problem as you, i started out at 387 and now have hit 315. I was banded 7/23. I have had 2 fills so far and seem to slow down the weight loss just a week before my next fill. I have a 10cc band and now have 8cc added as my fills. i have been walking but not too fast because of my knees and hip pain. i think if you are feeling well and your Doctor is not worried you should be ok. My doctor is not at all worried about my weight, in fact he will prob. not give me another fill until the weight slows down. Good luck with you weight loss and may you enjoy your band.

    Cheese... glorified fat?

I loooooove cheese & I eat it a lot for snacks and I add it to a lot of my meals. Since I use it so much, I buy low fat. I actually found a great cheese with less then 2 grams of fat per serving, low calories and almost zero carbs. It's called lifetime cheese. I love their jalapeno jack cheese. YUM! I also buy Trader Joes Light Sliced Provolone. Yum, yum! I'm losing aprox 2 pounds per week so eating cheese is not stopping my weight loss.

    Headaches

Long2Bfree ... if it's all over, then it isn't sinus, or just stress. If you are hydrated (and you know you are) then I'm at a loss. I'd keep an "eye" on it and check with my doc if they didn't improve, especially since you know your BP etc are all ok!

    What to do?

It sounds like you need to review all the bandster rules and guidelines and try to pinpoint the problem. Stress, hormonal changes, certain foods or eating improperly can cause you to be feel tighter or get sick. So look at things like: Is the slow loss causing you excess stress? Or are there stressful situations when the problem happens? Is it your TOM? Are you eating breads, dry meats, fibrous or starchy vegetable or other specific foods that are causing you to feel sick? Are you eating slowly, taking small bites and chewing well. Are you making sure not to drink too soon after eating? On days that you feel too hungry: Are you getting enough to drink between meals? Are you truly tummy rumbling hungry or just wanting to eat more? Are you eating a lot of white carbs? (bread, potato, Pasta, rice, sugar...) Are you getting in enough solid lean Protein before eating your veggies and fruits?

    Starving

It sounds like you dont have any restriction yet. It is possible for the fill to have not "kicked in" yet. Some people say they can't feel a difference until after a week. Until you get restriction, you won't have any real benefit from your band, and any weight loss you experience will come from a lot of work on your part. I am sorry you are hungry all of the time. That really sucks. If after a week, you still are starving, call your surgeon and see if he/she will agree to do another fill. Many people don't feel any real restriction until their third or fourth fill. Also, ask if you are supposed to follow any certain guidelines after a fill. Many doctors require liquids after the fill for a day or two. Mine doesn't, but I always read people talking about the liquids after a fill.

    3 Months Out: Struggling

I had mine done a month before you and have had a few fill and only lost 22 lbs. I constantly remind myself that this is not a quick fix. One thing that helped me because I was at 18 lbs loss for 3 weeks was going back to the basics. I read all of my pre-op diet materials and kind of started over. I have had a hard time exercising, but I reminded myself that I not doing this to be skinny, but to be health and exercising is part of being health. I found two walking buddies. I thought there is if I am accountable to someone else, it may be motivating. Cause if I could count on myself, I would not be here. Therefore, since I went back to the basics, and began exercising, just last week, I have lost 3 lbs. Hope this helps Do not give up ... Never give up. You can do it.

    Post Op Port question...

The only way I even know my port is there is if I push pretty hard on the incision. I surely have never been able to see my port sticking out. My doctor did mention too that after a big weight loss that sometimes the port does have to be revised. Hope this helps.
  14. I came to the conclusion that I let myself go... I don't put makeup on. I don't do my hair, I gained lots of weight I don't dress nice. I can not wait to find out if I get approved.... P.S. Have only been married for 6 months Don't know what to do... Any body else have this problem?

    I Let Myself Go :(

This reads to me as a situation meeting diagnostic criteria for clinical depression...and I can't help but feel that seeking services of a qualified professional to help you process and improve your current emotional state is essential for your long term success for your weight loss journey. You did not mention how long you have been feeling this way...or if there were any identifiable life events which contributed to your current feelings, however I would not wait to seek intervention. I hope that you will be proactive to address your current issues...and that you will be in a better emotional place soon. Best wishes...

    Almost there!!!!!!!

I too have facial hair. It does not go away with weight loss. I go to an electrolysis and have it removed. I waited to long before I went to have it taken care of. It has been over 2 years and I am still going every 3 weeks.
  17. Ok, so it seems I was a little over-filled. Even several days after the fill (which was on 5/13) I wasn’t able to keep most solids down or I could only eat a tiny amount of food. While I liked the idea of tiny meals, it didn’t feel very good and didn’t really improve my weight loss. On Friday 5/22 I went with my sister to Tijuana to get her band at Dr. Ortiz’s OCC clinic. While he was counseling her I explained my situation to him and he said I was at risk of a slipped band  due to being overfilled and recommended they have a look under fluoroscopy while I was there. I don’t usually get my fills under fluoroscope so this sounded pretty intriguing to me. I got the fluoroscope and could see that even the barium was going down way too slow so they backed me off from 4.5cc to 3.7cc. I feel so much better now. I still feel restriction and I am not PBing at every meal. BTW, for anyone considering doing their surgery in Mexico I would highly recommend Dr. Ortiz and the OCC ! The facility was top notch and his entire staff was fabulous, in fact it seemed cleaner and more organized than most hospitals and doctors offices I have been to in the US. Dr. Ortiz was fantastic, very empathetic and super charismatic.

    Please help!

Well, good job. What THAT means is that your stomach has recovered from surgery. After you get your lap band, you don't really experience THE lap band until you start getting restriction (through Adjustments, aka "fills"). SOOOO....where you're at is NOT bad--you SHOULDN'T feel different yet. Your doc will probably wait a certain amount of time, just to make sure you're all healed up, then you will start going back to her for your fills. You will continue to go in every month or couple of months until your level of restriction and weight loss gets to a "sweet spot"---or the point at which your food intake and weight loss are at an optimum level. The sweet spot is really determined by YOU, but your doctor helps you with it. Congratulations!!!

    Fruits and veggies

Ever. The dr said the sugar from the fruit will cause you to eat more and weight loss will not be as significant.

I am going to do it!!!!

My surgery was 1 month after the seminar...7/10 seminar, 8/11 surgery. However even after a 3 week preop loss of 15 pounds my liver was still fatty so I got the band 8/29, which comes to .... just over 7 weeks total. Self pay people could probably have gotten in a little more quickly...so I guess this month is feasible if they told you it could happen that quickly! My doc's office told us at the seminar the fastest they could make it happen with all the preop tests etc would be 2 weeks. I guess it depends on your locale, surgeon, and situation!
  22. Hi PrettyFace! I too am begining my weight loss journey ... a bit further south than Portland, actually closer to your home town of San Diego. I currently live in Orange County California and am looking to have my surgery sometime in the summer of this year. Right now I have already done the inital consult, EKG, Endoscopy, blood work, and thankfully made it past the two sleep studies. Scheduled to have my gal bladder removed on Thursday 1/26/12. I have a 6 month waiting period with my insurance company (Cigna OAP) and basically that started about two weeks ago. Current weight of 301 (the biggest ever) lbs 6'1" and incredibly active with a full time job (usually work about 6 days a week 12 hr shifts), three kids, two dogs, two snakes, and a really loving but needy husband I dont normally eat a ton of Snacks or even tear up the buffet, I think my biggest issue is eating unhealthy fast food places because I lead such a busy life. This entire process has been a whirlwind since I decided to make the call and at sometimes find myself wanting to back out of it because I am unsure I have made the right decision. I am ALWAYS second guessing myself! Enough of my story...I do want to wish you the best and hope to keep in touch as I would really like to see how your doing since your surgery is scheduled about 3-4 months before mine.

    upchuck reflux??

This is the very reason I refuse to go off my Prilosec. I'll be 11 months out in a couple of days, and personally, I'm perfectly content on my PPI until I'm further out. I'm not willing to risk the acid or false hunger issue that many encounter when they go off the PPI. Many congrats on your loss thus far, you're doing fabulous ! ! !

    Overeating

I can totally relate!!! I was also banded on Feb 16th and just went in for my first fill yesterday (March 29th). I have had really slow weight loss (only 2 pounds! since weigh in on surgery day:cursing:) and was able to eat significantly more then 4 oz in one sitting. I hope this fill does the trick! but to be honest i don't really feel any significant change in restriction today....i just ate a cheese stick and nothing...i guess we will see how lunch goes today. He filled me pretty aggressivly (i think?) 4.5 cc and I will be sad if I continue to not lose weight and be hungry...super frustrating! and even kinda of embarassing since everyone i know knows that i had this surgery and i haven't had any signficant weight loss....
