  1. This is a 'life-changing event' and a choice you will live with for the rest of your life. Don't sacrifice saving a few bucks with the risk of having complications which could potentially cost you more in hospital and medical bills than the actual surgery itself. $4,500 is already a great value and exactly what I paid for my surgery. I would not go any lower. Dr. Fernando Garcia was my guy and everything went perfect. I could not be happier. After 7 months I am down 100lbs. Just saying.

    Thankful

Not sure if this makes a difference but the whole day before I went for my first fill I was on liquids only, then liquids two days after. Soft musies for two more days and on the 5th day I went back to solids. Never had a burping or sliming problem. With the second fill, I ate normally all day on the day of the fill. After the fill I was on 1 day of liquids instead of two and went to solids on day two instead of day five. The difference in the two fills was huge. The first fill, no complications. The second fill, I've had burping problems and haven't felt that great. I'm still not restricted so when I go for the next fill I'm going to do liquids only before and after and follow my surgeon's instructions to a T. It makes all the difference for me. Hope this helps.
  3. I had my surgery on spring break and though I was tired and not back 100%, I was able to make it and sit through all 5 of my classes. I also have to walk between classes which total about 3 miles. I didn't have any complications, but i think if all goes well, it's doable! Good luck! By the way, if you really feel awful they have to accommodate you, I'm sure your surgeon will give you a note. Good luck.
  4. Hello Everyone! Got a call from the surgeon's office yesterday, I'm approved! I'm happy to say I have a tenative surgery date of November 3rd. Why so late you may be asking, let me give you the reason why. While I was doing my 6 month pre-op I decided on breast reduction surgery. In late July I had around 7 lbs removed total. Unfortunately a small infection developed which caused stress on the already tight skin. The infection cleared up, but has left an open wound that a 4x4 gauze pad just covers.:tongue2: There is new skin growth starting to cover the area, :scared2: but it's very slow in getting better. ( 7 weeks tomorrow) It must heal completly before surgery. If it should somehow get better quickly, they will move my date up. If it doesn't I'll have to push the date even later. Here I thought I'd be having it done this month! I don't regret having the breast reduction, even with this huge open wound, it is great having all that weight removed and I no longer have to order a extended cup size that never really fit anyway. (40H to 40C) Plus,it was all covered by insurance where breast lifts are not. I am praying for this to heal quickly and without any more complications so that I may finally be an offical bandster!! Thanks for reading, sorry for such a long post.
  5. Congrats on your surgery date. Just remember that you are reading on a suuport board and a lot of the people that posts here only come here to complain or find information on problems they have. You aren't hearing from a lot of people that have successful bands w/o any problems. I wouldn't base my decision on only the threads you are reading with complications. We have several people here that haven't had any problems at all. I for one have not had any problems, but that doesn't mean I won't in the future. Good luck in whatever you decide to do!

    Lap Band Removal Surgery

And what's wrong with him offering her different links on both band removal/complication, as well as revision links in case she's interested?
  7. My surgery is tomorrow morning 1/15 and I am a huge bundle of nerves right now. I can't remember the last time I was this nervous about something for so long. I haven't been sleeping much since I got my surgery date the week after Christmas Here's a little about me and my fat history: I was a little overweight in my childhood, but I was also a three sport athlete through high school(Football, wrestling and baseball), which helped keep me around 200lbs my senior year (5'11). I joined the Marines right after graduation and got down to 170 and maintained 170-190 for the 6 years I was in. I got out when I was 24 and finished up my last two years of college and got a desk job. That's when the weight started creeping up on me. Fast forward 12 years to 2010 after I had ballooned up to 340lbs, I decided to diet pretty hard and managed to lose 90lbs from 2010 to mid 2011. I was feeling pretty good about myself, but for some reason decided to sabotage it all and proceeded to put those 90lbs plus an extra 40 back on from late 2011 all the way to now. I decided I had had enough in June after years of yo-yo dieting and trying every diet in the book that it time for a change and looked into WLS. I considered the lap band at first for the usual reasons (not cutting up the insides), but after talking to another doctor and reading various forums about a lot of lap band removals, I decided on the sleeve. After spending six months on the insurance weight management plan for bariatric surgery, it's all happening really fast now. It's finally real. Anyway, this time tomorrow, my surgery should be finished and I'll probably be high on anesthesia/pain meds. I just need to keep telling myself that I'll be in the 99% of people that don't have complications.

    Serious Question???

My surgery was in june 6 of this year haven t had any complications so far, yesterday i helped moved some heavy equipment including a piano, having having to lift and strain to lift it up into a truck. Now everything EVERYTHING i eat is getting stuck and i have to throw it back up, other than calling my doctor which is the obvious i need suggestions on what i might of done, and what i can do. Thanks
  9. Wow. This sounds horrible. So sorry you have these complications and i hope you are feeling better soon.

    Can't eat much, need advice.

Go have .5 of the fill taken out. The more dehydrated you get the more they will have to take out to make it better. Don't wait, being too tight is a major cause of complications.

    New with a question

I did not have a pain pump, I was in alot of pain, but I think that might have made it much more complicated and worse. Just a tip, make sure you get your scheduled fills after to get best results! Good Luck! I took a nasal spray pain medicine which was great and worked well.

    Need advice/opinions

If a doctor has done a lot of RNY's then he has a lot of experience with the staple line. That is the most important thing to consider. The RNY is a much more complicated surgery. Dr. Criangle is supposed to be the most experienced sleeve surgeon in CA, but I would not hesitate to recommend Dr Aceves who is also a very experienced sleeve surgeon. Considering more than half the people on this board have gone to him and nobody has ever had anything but wonderful things to say about their experience, Dr. Aceves should be a top choice for anyone considering this surgery. If you have insurance that's going to pay, that would be the only reason not to go to him. His cash price is very good considering you will spend 3 days in the hospital and get 3 leak tests.

    FAILED GASTRIC SLEEVE SURGERY

Didn't make the flight to Honolulu for followup. It was a mess. I was living in Kona and the main hospital and all the Specialists were in Honolulu. I had to fly back and forth, the day of my followup happened to be a busy day at the Kona airport and I was in the security line for over 3 hrs. Usually it takes 5 mins to get through but this day was just not a good one. I was scheduled for the next flight but the Dr's office said they couldn't see me even if I got there. So I tried to reschedule and got a ton of run around. It was Aug when I moved back here to NM aka the mainland. The whole system in Hawaii was really fustrating with communication since we were on different islands... I had the people in my local support group and no complications thank God, so I just went with it. It wasn't until now that I'm a yr out almost and my fellow gastric surgery companions are posting thier weight loss pics and such that I'm feeling really left behind. So I found our Dr here at the hospital where I work and thank goodness he agreed to take me on. Really I feel so much better now that I have a MD! lol Thank you all for your repsonses and supportive comments! I'll keep you informed! Lots of great info! I do not eat Lean Cuisines lol btw, I have eaten them in the past and when using a reference for potions I can eat that was the first that came to mind.

    New and trying to decide

It's hard to know which is best for everyone because everyone is so different. If there was 1 perfect operation then that is all anyone would ever get. There are pros and cons to all of them and you need to decide which is best for you and your lifestyle. Everyone on here is going to be somewhat biased because we all seem to be pro-sleeve, but the best thing you can do is gather your research and go to your appointment with the surgeon and ask a lot of questions. A good surgeon is going to look at your BMI, how much weight you want to lose and your current health issues and will be able to recommend what they feel is your best option. Personally I chose the sleeve because I like the fact that nothing is re-routed and I will not have to deal with malabsorbtion issues. I know that if you have a very high BMI and you are looking to lose a lot of weight my surgeon recommends the bypass, but he is confident that I will be capable of losing the 90 pounds that I would like to lose with the sleeve. My surgeon told me he never recommends the band anymore because that is only to be used as a temporary fix and there are too many complications with it. The sleeve is relatively newer than the bypass (which is still considered to be the gold-standard of WLS due to higher amounts of weight lost), but I feel confident in my choice. Yes, it is permanent and can not be reversed, but that is part of my body I wouldn't want back! Sleeve can always be converted to bypass down the road if you do not see the results you were hoping for. Hope that helps!
  15. I'll be in hospital for 5 stay for complications if someone's got nothing better to do :-)
  16. The purpose of the 2 week liquid diet is to shrink the liver by not eating any fat. The liver is smack dab in the way of the VSG surgery, and they have to have a little tray thing in there to lift it up and out of the way... if it's enlarged an fatty (most of ours are pre-vsg) it's easier to accidentally knick it, poke it, or tear it, which would case the doctor to have to switch to and OPEN surgery to repair the liver, then continue the vsg. Open surgery means cracking all your ribs in half, and slicing you open from neck to waist. It means months longer recovery time, and a much higher risk of complications. So now think about that, and ask yourself if two weeks liquid diet is really that bad.

    Spouse supporting a bandster

You say you lack the energy to be an exercise partner. I know personally the one thing I would love to have more than anything is a walking partner! Walking is good exercise, you should not walk so fast that you can't carry on a conversation so it's a great social time and it costs nothing to do...in these financial times, something free that's good is not to be sniffed at! Okay, you say, but I don't think I can do that. Well, tell her you will walk with her until you feel that must turn around. Every time you go out, try to walk a little further. You will benefit from this AND SO WILL SHE. You will get stronger, and she will feel that you are making a big effort for her and that should inspire her, too! Do you cook at all? You can cook simple meals and surprise her and provide meals that are within "the plan" and maybe even provide some leftovers that can then provide a healthy lunch the next day. Example? Grill chicken, steak or lean pork OR FISH. There is a flat thingie with small holes to put fish on on top of the grill grid. Spray it with PAM so the fish doesn't stick. Grill vegetables! Some fruits even taste better grilled because it intensifies the flavor! Experiment. A little leftover steak can be added to salad greens with some sauteed mushrooms and low fat or fat free salad dressing. Instant lunch. Support isn't complicated. Reward her with a surprise now and then. There's a thread here somewhere about rewarding yourself. I suggested a nice (though certainly not ostentatious) piece of jewelry at 50 pounds. Maybe a silver (or gold, if you can afford it) charm bracelet with just one charm on it. Then add to it every 5 or 10 pounds. Silver would make more frequent charms more affordable. And what a nice surprise to have you pick these out for her! Love is the best support of all, my friend!

    Would you still have it?

I was banded Sept. 2010. I know it hasn't been that long, but I can tell you that getting banded was the best thing I could have done for myself. Bypass was never an option for me. I have seen too many people with complications/death and I have 2 young children. It didn't even cross my mind. The band has been a great tool for weight loss. I am down 53 lbs and so proud of what I have been able to do so far! Do your research and figure out what is best for you.

    Bypass vs sleeve

While you do lose faster with bypass because of the malabsorption, the amount of weight that you lose in the long run is going to be about the same with both surgeries. Both surgeries have their own set of possible complications, as with any surgery, so it is ultimately up to you which you feel more comfortable having. I personally don't like the idea of re-routing my insides and the malabsorption, which is why I am choosing the sleeve. I have 150 to lose as well. There are a lot of threads on here that weigh the pros and cons of each surgery . Good luck

Slippage from auto accident...I need to vent!

Oh my goodness I'm so sorry for what happened to you. Car accidents are horrible without complications like this, but this just makes it really terrible :-( It definitely would depend on your circumstance but I would revise to the sleeve. For me, dumping syndrome is just so unappealing that I wouldn't consider RNY. I really like my sweets and I want to be able to enjoy them (but normally, in normal portions as opposed to an ENTIRE cake or the WHOLE container of Ben and Jerry's) without having to run to the restroom every time. If I ever revise, I think I will revise to the sleeve (or plication, depending on how that procedure fairs). Sorry for your situation and good luck with your decision!

    Now what?

Thanks for sharing Yeah, your story sounds familiar. I haden't had a fill in 18 months and suddenly heartburn. Got some Fluid out and still not better. I am terrified of surgery to get my band removed but even more terrified of having serious complications. Many people opt to have a revision done at the same time they get their bands removed. Ask your MD because I completely understand the fear. I am 50 lbs down (at one point was 70) and am terrified to see the scale go much higher
  22. I just found another nice nugget on band with plication. The following was released on March 22, 2011, just three months ago: At the summit today, the preliminary data from a Band with Plication study was presented by Dr Dana Portenier. This is a combined study by Duke University and University of Pittsburgh Medical Center. The current study involves 45 patients with a mean age of 43 years. They have a mean starting weight of 255lbs, and BMI of 42. The majority of the patients had a Band with Plication procedure done, although 9 had a Plication done in combination with a band revision. Early results show 37% EWL (Excess Weight Loss) at 18 weeks.Proponents of this new procedure think that compared with standard gastric banding it may: provide faster and more durable weight loss, and might require fewer band adjustments and reduce complications such as slips or erosions. Another proposed benefit compared to a gastric plications without banding is that it may allow a less tight plication which would decrease suture line leaks and ischemia. (see http://doctorsofweightloss.com/2011/03/band-summit-band-with-plication/) This and the other studies I've found put to rest my own skepticism and I'm glad to have been assigned Portenier. (Still a little peeved after not being informed of this option when I should have been, but that's another story.) Punching my own numbers, I can expect to lose 62 pounds by Christmas. HOOOO wah! There are people with whom I want to share my adventure and others with whom I do not, a few of which I'll probably see over the holidays. If asked how I've lost so much weight so quickly, I think I'll quote Lois Griffin - "Meth is a hell of a drug." That oughtta take care of it. (see http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gvxWdnu9iDE)

Surgeons don't always have the best plan

Yeah, I was just reading another post from someone whose surgeon had been a complete ass at her most recent follow-up. I don't know if it's that they think "tough love" is needed or what, but it's crazy to think that any doctor could have so little empathy and compassion! The good news is, you have all of us! So unless you are experiencing a real medical complication, you can come here for support and advice and leave that surgeon behind! Another thing that came out of that post I was just reading is that you can turn back to your nutritionist for your diet concerns and you PCP for blood work and medical follow-up. So maybe look at the other professionals you have access too instead of relying on your surgeon for that stuff.
  24. Hello Aliamah1998, To answer your question about the band fills. My doctor put 4cc in the band during surgery, but since I had complications with inflammation he removed my Fluid. I went a whole month without a band fill. My Surgery was on April 11 and first adjustment wasn't until May 20 of 2cc. Then my last one was on June 10 of 1.5cc. Most times they wont put it all in there at one time and they will step you up as needed. Some people have never had a band fill before. Maybe you should speak to your doctor because the first month, you may not have much of an appetite anyway. Sorry so late. Hope all is well with you on this weight loss journey. FeFe
