  1. My surgery is scheduled for February 8th. When I started this last year my weight was 262. By the time I was done with classes I was down to 252. I have quit smoking since September and now back up to 258. Has anybody had some weight gain but still not over your top weight and still had surgery? I'm scared the surgeon is going to cancel. Yes I am still working at losing.
  2. I actually have a friend that had a total fail. She lost about 50lbs straight out of the gate, but within 6 months of the surgery, she had gained it all back plus. I do know that had a lot of other medical issues including some neurological that they now believe played a role in the regain and lack of further weight loss. After the weight gain post surgery, she just kind of gave up and ate what she wanted when she wanted , so that hasn't helped either.

    People noticing?

It was the opposite for me, I'm down 18 lbs since surgery, now 191. I did also change how I dress and not wearing anything that's loose on me. I kept all my smaller clothes since my weight gain has been mainly in the last 6 years. I got a new haircut as well to help my round face look slimmer. I've been slow to loose, and I guess these things help me stay motivated and I no longer cringe when I look in the mirror. Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App

    Cheat day?

Definitely a good idea to read up on ketosis. I think people who have never been on Atkins or South Beach don't understand how it differs from a straight-up low calorie diet. That transition into ketosis is no fun! And the water-weight gain from storing glycogen again is going to upset people who put a lot of stock into what their scale says. Thank you. The Water retention is actually a noticeable feeling. The result of just one day of substituting just a small amount of calories. No weight gain thankfully. Have this forum to thank.
  5. Hello everyone I am new to this page I am 5 months in to my insurance approval process, and I just met with my surgeon here in Birmingham Alabama. Before i met with him i was looking at the Gastric bypass mainly for the reasons of negative reinforcement from dumping. Once i met with him he recommended the sleeve. I know in the end its up to me iI have done a ton of research lately and the sleeve and bypass seem to have the same weight loss percentage just a different amount of time. I also worry about weight gain after the fact i know it can happen with both. My Surgeon told me that a lot of the reason he recommends the sleeve is because of my job which is 75 to 80 percent of the time behind a desk. but the other i might be doing a lot of heavy lifting and walking with heavy loads. I am 6'3 420 currently and not sure which way to go I would love as much advice as i can get I am also putting this on the Gastric Sleeve board as i am confused as ever.

  7. Thanks, hikerdog. Your numbers are impressive, especially the presurgery numbers. My daily commute gets me a minimum of 2 miles in a day. I walk another 2-3 miles during lunch and a mile after dinner. It's been 10 years but I'm going to lace up my hockey skates and have a go at some pickup hockey this Friday. Cross your fingers I don't hurt myself. I played competitively growing up but an injury and the weight gain that ensued has mostly kept me off of the ice for 19 years. I played in few leagues off and on but I re-injured myself 10 years ago and haven't gone back. The new me is inspired to try it again. Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App

Are you going poop? That can also mess with the weight gain. Sent from my iPad using the BariatricPal App
  9. My sister had a bypass done some years ago. Lost all the weight and gained it all back and then some. She's the biggest she's ever been these days, BUT she also has a lot of mental issues and addictions that she never really got help for that led her weight gain. For this reason alone, I haven't told most of my family because they'll automatically associate my decision with hers. We are not even close to being alike in any way, shape, or form. I told my husband, he supports me. He wants me to be happier about my health/weight and tells me all the time to do what I feel like I need to do, no matter the costs, etc. I also suspect that he wants me to be the "hot" again. LOL My youngest brother had concerns, "why don't you just eat better?" I quickly told him to educate himself on bariatric surgery before he slams my decision. Two days later he texts me and says he will be here for me for whatever decision I make. And my sister in law to whom I'm very close to says she's a supporter. I have told some friends and they're on board (but I don't need nor care if they approve or not). I think overall, the only person I need approval from is my husband. That's all that matters to me.

Two weeks post op and gaining?

I get the tool...but a tablespoon or teaspoon or even a 1/4 cup of food should not cause ANY weight gain..if it does then thats a problem. I could shoot myself for not asking the Dr. if a smaller stomach means I will gain on way less food....
  11. Anyone have aten better health of Virginia and got approval with 2 lbs weight gain? Do you know what net weight mean I go to my last weigh in and I was told I could not be higher than my net weight I don't know what that mean Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App
  12. Your age has a lot to do with whether you loose some elasticity in your skin making the loose skin not to go away. It also has a lot to do with how obese you got b4 you got your weight loss operation. Usually the hair loss is minimal & whether hair loss runs in your family, especially if women in your family hair thins with age. The skin on your face is always thinner when you loose weight quickly but most of it goes back to whatever is normal for your face shape. Look at photos of yourself b4 you started gaining weight as a child if need be. When skin is stretched out from becoming obese or even pregnancies, everyone is different from their body shapes & skin's elasticity. Some lucky few women never get stretch makes during pregnancy. The more stretch marks that occurred during your weight gain the less likely your skin will snap back firm to when you were a child or teen. The healthier way you feel loosing weight is the biggest plus ever than staying extremely obese! I've gotten off high blood pressure meds for the 1st time in my adult life & I'm 65. I started getting extremely obese in my mid20s. So I can honestly say I am really enjoying my 60s more than my late 20s, 30s, 40s & 50s because I can walk without getting short of breath & I can actually buy stylish clothes finally. There are side effects to being obese & side effects to surgery. Exercise once your able to! But if the loose skin is your main hate of loosing your weight then you need to save money to get it removed or wear shape garments so you feel better looking in your smaller clothes. For Pete's sake even thin movie stars wear spanks under their red carpet outfits BC they try to elude perfection. We're all our own worst enemies no matter how rich & famous you are. Lol Be so proud of yourself what you did to help yourself & never give up BC the best is yet to come. Smiles goes miles & a huge healer for your outlook on life! Big hugs to you all with a smile included! Sent from my VK700 using the BariatricPal App

    Not feeling much restriction

A couple thoughts about your post..... 1) if you have fundus deformity then your surgeon did not do your surgery correctly. A properly performed VSG Removes all of the fundus, which, as explained above us the stretchy part of your stomach. 2) sounds lime you were grossly misinformed about WLs and what is actually required for long term success. Any surgery (including bypass) is only one small part of what is required for long term weight loss. It was drilled into me over and over that it's the lifestyle changes we make that play a much more vital role. You can out eat any physical changes created by any surgery. Success is much more psychological than surgical. I'm truly sorry you weren't told the truth when making your decision to have surgery. 3). If you are having severe GERD, then yes, bypass is probably the answer for you. But again, your long term results as far as weightloss goes will be the same as your VSG without the often overlooked psychological tools. I suggest finding a good therapist if you find yourself going back to your old eating habits.....or developing new, just as destructive habits customized to eat around your bypass restriction. I saw this all the time in group. 1)The fundus deformity is a result of stretching my sleeve. I am over two years post op; my surgery was done correctly. All of my previous follow-ups indicated so. 2)I am not misinformed about WLS. 3)I do not need a therapist. I am aware of my role in my weight gain. I hear people say all the time the sleeve does not stretch, when in fact it does.
  14. Hello Blev I started out at over 300 lbs, I was 300 on the day of surgery. I am 45, so you and I are about the same age. I also had a hysterectomy and gained a lot of weight after that. And I am bipolar and the meds really attributed to even more weight gain. So I just wanted to say "hi" and that I was excited like you are! Congratulations on making the decision to have the sleeve surgery. My only regret is that I didn't do mine sooner!

    Pregnancy after Surgery

Hey sweet My sister looked into this to. Her surgeon adviced her that she would be under him to monitor her throughout her pregnancy. Healthy eating, Fluid intake, Vitamins will all help darlz. Your 1 yr post op which is fantastic so you are able to eat. 9 months of dedication and you will be rewarded. Please dont worry about weight gain - this is absolutely normal. All I can say is do it right. Even if you eat small portions regularly and those portions are healthy. Get regular blood tests to check your Iron and other levels. Always check with your doctor about vitamins and what is best and safe for you and bub. Even before you fall pregnant get your levels checked. Being fully prepared body wise will be all the better for you and bubby. My surgeon told me that he had patients who fell pregnant and had 8 pound babies but he made them go under him for monitoring as well as their baby doctor. Sorry I havent been through this myself to offer you personal experiences but I wish you all the best and cant wait to aee how you go. Xx Sent from my SM-G925I using the BariatricPal App
  16. Hi everybody's. I was sleeved 7 weeks ago. Starting weight was 239. After surgery I went up 10 pounds from air, Fluid etc. lost 28 pounds by 3 weeks and stalled for 2 weeks where I hovered at the same 2 pounds. Then I started to lose again and this past Saturday I was down to 207. Since then I have been creeping up and today I am 210.5. . I had been drinking a small decaf iced coffee with skim milk for past week so I cut that out 2 days ago. I am eating 3 meals and 2 Snacks Usually stay between 800 and 1100 calories a day and have 70-90 gems of Protein. I did go out to dinner on Sunday and ordered a chicken dish with a balsamic dressing. I only ate a very small part ( obviously) but then ate it 2 more times for different meals. Won't do that again. Been exercising but not enough it seems. So with all that... any advice, tips, words of wisdom?? I understand A stall but weight gain at this early stage but weight gain?? Very discouraging. I'm trying to look at behaviors and use this as a learning experience but I'm feeling down. I didn't go through all this to fail. Help!!! Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App

    Almost giving up! HELP!

Fiqah87 I'm so sorry to hear what you are going through. I have a friend that went through the same thing you are talking about. She got depressed from being sick all the time and just gave up. Now she is only about 50 away from where she started and she is really depressed. But also, come to find out, she quit taking her recommended medicine and Vitamins and she also started back with bad eating habits. Now she is at the realization that she got too comfortable and started eating the way she used to eat because she had lost so much weight and then due to the rapid weight gain, she started staying then she was so sick that she couldn't eat. I pray things get better for you. Good luck Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App

  19. Hello Everyone, I am a year out of surgery and I am planning on getting pregnant. I wanted to hear from others as I am scared of the high risk pregnancy and malnutrition. I am also very terrified of the weight gain as I am addicted to the scale now (I literally had to have my husband hide the scale from me). Has anyone had a baby after weight loss? How did you handle putting on weight? How did you not gain a lot of weight? I have a doctors appointment tomorrow and will talk to them about being on a strict diet. Before surgery I was diabetic and I am fearful that will come back with the pregnancy as well. Any advice or if anyone can share their story and please tell me straight forward. I know everyone is different but I just want to hear the good and the bad. HW 303 SW 296 CW 170

    Frustrated

I had surgery on 1/20 too! I weighed myself Monday and gained a pound! I was a pound heavier then when I began my pre-op diet. I was like wtf? Today (Wednesday), I weighed myself and I lost 7 pounds! Im thinking the fluids and gas they pumped into me during surgery was the weight gain and it took a few days to pass out if my body. Give it time, it will happen. Everybody's body is different... Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App
  21. Thank you for your thoughtful reply. I know a little about FMT. We included it in an article that we wrote on gut bacteria and weight gain http://www.mybariatriclife.org/trust-your-gut-bacteria-and-weight-gain-2/. At the time of the writing it was considered experimental and not covered by insurance. That may have changed by now. So I need to look into it. Thanks again for your support. It is awful to experience the pain and inflammation and bloating. Add to that the myriad of problems presented when I am in a public place, at the office, church, someone's home...

    Seroquel XR weight gain?

It's notorious to cause metabolic syndrome. I have been on 150 mg of Seroquel for four years to treat my disassociation due to PTSD. It saved my life and was a game changer in my mental health. It contributed to a 100lb weight gain in one year. I can eat vegan, fast food, paleo, Atkins, you name it, and my weight won't budge from 247lbs. I am scheduled to have my sleeve in February and I am petrified that I may have to go off the medicine.

    Sugar

Sugar is a major reason for weight gain. And has zero nutritional value. You need to focus only on foods that nourish your body after wls. That is how I approach food now. Does it provide nutrients or is it filler. If it the latter I'll take a pass. Google is your best friend on the sugar question.

    15 years out

Wow, it took me a few days to figure out how to get back into this forum. I'm grateful for the many comments on here. It's gives me hope. I heard the wrong things early in my glory days of weight dropping off. " if you are able to keep the weight off 3 years you will not have any problems ". Unfortunately I took it to heart and allowed myself to eat whatever I wanted. My weight did go up and down some about 10lbs. I worked full time at a physical job and exercised my days off. I hit 40, job change, weight gain. Found out about disabilitys more weight gain. Lost our home in a house fire, more weight gain. I have always known I'm a sugar addict. Most of the time Doctors and professionals laughed like I'm Kidding. I wish, but notice they don't laugh at alcoholism or drug addiction. So long story short I lost my job, home, had a scary gun accident that left me with PTSD and 75lbs of extra fat. I'm feeling depressed beyond understanding to most. Sugar feels like my only comfort in life. Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App
  25. I too am not sure if my PCP will give me a referral. I have only been seeing her for the last two years and my weight has gone up and down throughout the years due to yo-yo dieting. I switched PCPs a lot before I found one that I was comfortable with and would always go on a fad diet before scheduling my annual physicals because I was ashamed of my weight and didn't want to get lectured about the dangers of obesity. I have kept a log of most of my weight loss attempts and weight gains which I plan on bringing to my Dr.'s appointment. Hopefully that will help. Good luck with your doctor.
