Sooo Very Proud Of Myself! 4 Weeks Post Op!!
Randi Cartmill replied to Randi Cartmill's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I work out 6 days a week 2 to 3 hours Day I've been doing it since may. I also went vegetarian in may and so I eat healthy now I do have fish still but no other meats.. I committed to all id thus before surgery so that I would be healthy and successful in my weight loss journey keep up the good work 3lbs is better than no pounds Onderland is to be in the 100s -
As you might guess from my screen name I travel a lot. I would not suggest vegetarian. That is almost always Pasta and bread. I have had the most success ordering low carb or diabetic. I did that on business class on Singapore airlines and got some of the best bariatric meals you could imagine. US carriers will not be as friendly, and if you are not in business class it may be totally hopeless. I would suggest carrying good Protein bars (such as Quest), beef Jerky, and almonds. All of those pack easily and provide a nice shot of protein. This weekend I had a 9 hour trip back from London in coach with United. I was not able to eat anything they served. It was all bread, chips, and pasta. I lived off 2 Protein Bars and a handful of almonds. I just did a few stops in Europe (in coach) and found eating in the air and on the ground very difficult. Everything was a sandwich, and most of those sandwiches had a little piece of meat or cheese that was so thin it was virtually transparent. On the other hand, in flight and restaurant meals in Asia were a dream.

I'd wager a bet that the vegetarian meal will be a Pasta of some sort. Just going by past experiences. I could be wrong though! I'm flying in December and have been wondering about this too. I'll be bringing along Protein powder and whatever else I can eat at the time. But, for my meal I requested the diabetic meal.

So we all know plane food isn't the best, but have you requested a specific dietary requirement post sleeve? If so, what meals did you order? I'll be travelling in the near future and would rather something light, so I'm considering the vegetarian meal option.

has anyone gotten the lapband to loose 50 pounds
Shackwacky replied to juicylicious's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
Oh I am glad I found this thread! I have 50 to 60 pounds to lose, and the first couple of times I mentioned the band I got "but you're not big enough" -- or "wow that's expensive why don't you just........join-a-gym, eat-less, try-(insert diet name here), walk-more, get-hypnotized, hire-a-trainer, learn-to-love-yourself" yada yada yada yada. So, I am doing it, but not telling anyone except my husband. Sadly, I have tried almost every one of those things people keep telling me I should try, and then some. I have been 50 to 60 pounds overweight for 15 years, and I feel it in every joint and lump and bump in my body. I am in my high (very high) forties, and I am really afraid if I don't do something drastic I will limp into old age overweight, unhappy and arthritic with messed up blood sugar and a bad heart (meet my family). The most weight I have ever lost (and kept off) is about twenty pounds for the last three years --- I switched to low fat vegetarian food for about 90% of the time and that finally put the scale from 220 to 200. My GP thinks my diet is excellent, I just eat too much of it. Uh ya, I eat too much of EVERYTHING, thus the BMI He originally suggested I eat less. (Oh thanks, ten years of medical school and that's what he comes up with?) If I could eat less, I would be thin, ya think? I was terrified at first, now I am plain and simple excited and impatient. I won't have to have a strict pre-op diet apparently, and have been assured that the post-op isn't so terrifying either. Bring it on. -
Definitely sounds like lactose intolerance from what I've read. There are protein shakes that are made from whey isolate (as opposed to whey concentrate). The isolate is very, very highly filtered which results in a product that is 90% - 96% pure protein. The filtration also removes most (not all) of the lactose and seems to be well tolerated even by folks who are lactose intolerant. Another alternative would be shakes which use soy protein as opposed to whey. Soy is an excellent source of protein and often used by vegetarians or folks who are lactose intolerant. Just Google it to find lots of options. Stay determined until you find a protein supplement that works for you. You'll be glad you did!!

Any Vegetarians With A Band? Vegans?
sheepieluvr replied to Sannah's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
This has been a major concern for me. I have not gotten the surgery yet and just met with the dietitian for the first time. She rolled her eyes when I said I was a vegetarian (lacto/ovo) and told me it was going to be difficult to get 75 grams of protein per day when I'm down to 4 oz meals. Very discouraging. I left feeling very stressed and concerned that I won't be able to succeed. I can use all of the support out there right now. Struggling to lose the 12 pounds needed for the surgery - when I am stressed, I eat (duh!). -
This is exactly the reason I decided not to tell anyone! I started by telling a few people of what I was contemplating and received negative comments from all of them! The misconception is that people who opt for the lap band are lazy and have no sense of self-control! No person will ever understand other than the people who really care, who are going through the same situation and who have seen what we go through (our husbands)! I have suffered so much to lose weight; I have even gone as far as becoming a strict vegetarian! I have the healthy lifestyle down but cannot manage to lose weight long enough because of my extreme hunger! I am ready to follow the healthy lifestyle for life....now if I could only lose this hunger!! :-/

Forks Over Knives ~ Documentary
creatingpeacedaily replied to LadyMaggie's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
I have read the book. Some interesting points brought up. I tried going vegetarian, but I like my meat based protein (poultry and seafood). I am only 3 weeks post op, so when my diet is freed up a bit, I will do plant based protein as well....believe it or not, I am craving edemame (sp?). I believe "everything in moderation." I enjoy poultry or seafood over beef, which can get you burned at the "steak", living here in the midwest! Extremes can get us all in trouble. -

Re-Sleeved With Dr Aceves
aceves_soon replied to aceves_soon's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
thanx all for your responses and encouragement. i was hesitant at first to go through with surgery as there arent alot of experiences online with resleeving, however after months of research and asking dr aceves questions daily, i made up my mind to finally do it. as for my previous sleeve, the first surgeon did not cut enough out to guarantee long term restriction, its his technique i guess. as for dilation, it happens frequently in some parts of the stomach as it did happen to me. as for foods that can and might stretch the sleeve, im not sure. i am a vegetarian, the hard and dense food i eat come from tofu and legumes. i dont eat meat which is even harder food, but my stomach dilated and stretched never the less. the medical system where i come from is very complicated. to consider asking for a free revision or a refund is totally out of the question, it just doesnt happen. dr aceves is a very kind man, he made sure im happy and comfortable with the care im having. all of his staff, dr campos, karla, yolanda, nina, the nurses the janitors everyone theyre very kind nice and always have a smile on their faces. im recouperating at the lucerna for the next few days, im feeling great. -
Soy Protein Vs. Whey Protein
DLCoggin replied to JustJenn's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Soy and whey are both excellent sources of Protein. Both are complete Proteins (meaning they have all nine essential amino acids which the body cannot produce on its own) and both have a perfect 1.0 score on the PDCAAS (Protein Digestibility Corrected Amino Acid Score) which ranks proteins based on their digestibility and has been adopted by the Institute of Medicine, the FDA and the World Health Organization. Soy is a plant based protein which makes it ideal for vegetarians or folks who are lactose intolerant. Whey protein is made from cow's milk and may or may not be tolerated by those who are lactose intolerant depending on the how highly the whey is filtered. If you're not vegetarian or lactose intolerant, you really can't go wrong with either soy or whey protein. There is a difference in taste so a good starting point might be to buy one of each and see what you think. I always caution folks to stay away from most (not all) products marketed as protein "shots" or "bullets". With one exception that I am aware of, all the rest are made with collagen protein which has a PDCAAS score of 0.08. These products are attractive to bypass patients because they are low volume - usually around 3 oz, and high protein - usually 30 to 50g. But any amount of protein, high or low, is useless if the body can't absorb it. The one exception which I learned from another forum member is "Yes Whey" which does not contain collagen protein. Hope that helps!! -
Hi all, Part of the reason for this is actually a little TMI but a lot of people seem to ask about constipation and a couple of alternative therapies I engage in seem to help with this. But also I'd love to hear what weird and wonderful things people have tried and/or are incorporating into their new lives! First homeopathy: I studied homeopathy in psychology at a Uni where the lecturer proceeded to eat a whole box of sleeping pills in front of us. However they were homeopathic. He said it was similar to eating a small mars bar! Now I consider homeopathy and it's principles to be quackery but I'd like to hear from others... Naturopathy: very different from above treats the body in a holistic way including spiritual. I have studied this in anthropology and sociology and I believe it should be studied by all western doctors! In the realm of naturopathy I have tried reflexology. I LOVE reflexology! I have a one hour massage every week and have had symptoms of easier bms, stress relief, insight, reduced pain in sciatica, decrease in headaches, and weight loss feels easier. I also have some mantras that use the mind to heal the body. I have tried enemas and colonic irritations which definitely seem to help my digestion and general feeling of well-being. Although I think some professionals will try and get you to attend more often than is healthy do they make more money. I am interested in trying a coffee enema. Green tea and white tea seem to help me wind down at night, even black tea soothes my nerves. This is debatable but may include the antioxidant properties and placebo effect. I've tried kinoki foot Patches and organic food. I've been vegetarian. That's it for now- what do you think and any more to add!?

My pre-op diet was simply vegetarian and very low fat for two weeks prior to surgery. Of course, nothing to eat after midnight the night before. I felt very fortunate, although my birthday plans for a Brazilian steakhouse dinner were dashed. It was okay, though!

I take a veggie burger some salsa and a cheese stick for lunch. Sometimes I do black beans, cheddar, salsa, and plain Greek yogurt in place of sour cream. I also take a couple slices of cheese and roll it up with vegetarian deli meats sometimes.

Any Raw Foodist/vegans/vegetarians Out There?
smallvegan replied to Peace36love's topic in Food and Nutrition
I've been vegan for a few years, vegetarian for years before that. I was sleeved on 8/14. My NUT has been wonderful working with me to make sure I can be successful with the sleeve. She said it is not common for vegans to get the sleeve, but it can be done. -
I am now 5 days post-op. I feel pretty good. Seem to have gas after I eat, but pain has been minimal. I have been craving meat and I am a vegetarian. It hasn't been easy getting in my protein because I do get full easily. Returning to work tomorrow, not really looking forward to going back. I have one more week at this job and will be starting a new job the following week. I am looking for postive change, positive people and a new skinny me. Here's to positve changes in life "toast".

Hopefully, your body is just deep cleansing its self. I go through this every 6 to 7 months. I'm pre op, but before I became a vegetarian my cycle would last for 7 days and I would have a very heavy flow. After I changed my diet and started taking in more nutrients my system did a total turn around and I started having lighter flows with no pain at all. I had them really bad to the point of being just about tied to the bed or the bathroom for three day in crazy pain and big chunks of clots passing non stop. Due the WLS and your new style of eating your systems may be going through that detoxing stage, and after it passes you will have that time of the month become easy breezy. Talk to your doctor, I'm sure that they have seen this time and time again. Best of luck to us all, cause I hate pain! lol

Any Raw Foodist/vegans/vegetarians Out There?
nyxa replied to Peace36love's topic in Food and Nutrition
thank you all for the kind words & support. i realize i can come off as overbearing sometimes.. but it comes from a good place.. i'm just passionate! lol --- i come in peace! <3 notime-- that's cool that your nutritionist is a vegan. but there are vegans/vegetarians out there rocking their sleeves. lol it may be a little harder in some ways, but it's doable! even if you can't or don't want to be a vegan, it's good to incorporate some stuff from that lifestyle in your diet, like you guys are talking about doing! doesn't have to be a full on conversion, a little does help a lot! here's a video of a lady whose been sleeved, she's demonstrating how to sprout some seeds to eat & talks about the benefits of the Water that the sprouts are in.. on a side note, in regards to sprouts.. i saw on doomsday preppers (a tv show) where one family stocked up on various sorts of seeds and water to sprout & live on in case of a major disaster.. because they (the sprouts) have everything you need to survive.. amino acids, minerals, Vitamins, carbs and fiber. i thought that was pretty cool! -
Any Raw Foodist/vegans/vegetarians Out There?
CoolBreeze replied to Peace36love's topic in Food and Nutrition
I think I fall into a particular catagory when it comes to being a 'vegetarian'... I have not had beef, veal, lamb, ect ect for at least 4months but I do eat eggs, chicken, turkey, seafood. Those sorta things. Most of my Protein comes from veggie burgers and such. I buy Morning Star Farms line of products and I am love them. Also from my Protein shakes too. nyxa - I read it all and also will incorporate some of the ideas mentioned. Very interesting post by the way. It shows your convictions and that is great!
