Chapter 2 - New Aftercare Doctor

ok, so I had my surgery with Dr. Kirshenbaum in Denver because my insurance would not pay for the surgery and I had to pay cash. I wanted someone with experience but not someone who was out to rob me blind. So... Dr. K was both and about $15K cheaper than anyone else I could find with his experience. One thing I found at my first fill was that he wasn't so good at after care. He didn't know how to tell me to know that I was filled correctly...so frustrated and water logged, I left with only 1.5 ccs in a 10cc band. That was 10/31/08. ON 11/07, I decided to call Fill Centers to find out what doctor they had available in Las Vegas for fills. They set me up with Dr Ricciardi a "Bariatric Physician", not to be confused with a "Bariatric Surgeon". I chose the annual plan with the promise that if I didn't like him that I could go to anyone else in the Fill Center network. Cool. Appt set for 11/20 at 9am. I was very impressed by his staff and by him. Turns out he is experienced and young and he trains other doctors across the country to be "aftercare" providers for bariatric surgery. How Cool! He listened, talked for about 30 minutes about what I've been trying and told me that I come to his office now for all aftercare. Awesome! So, he fills it 1.5 cc's and is amazed that I can chug a full water bottle with 3.0 ccs after only 8 weeks. I personally felt like he should put more but thought I should trust him and see how it goes. Next day all is well and I am eating around 1/4 - 1/2 cup depending on how much water I've had that day already. I think I need a little more so I'll set up an appt to go back in another week. Let's see how much I can lose this week without much restriction. I see many others who had surgery the same time as me are at 3.5 or 4.0 and have good restriction so I don't want to waste too much more time waiting for something to work... I'll give it til after Thanksgiving to see and then I'll make an appt. All in all, I was very pleased with my fill center experience. They gave me a lifestyle guide, access to recipes and other things on their website and called me for a follow up to see how everything went. I am pretty impressed.

Question for Post-Op patients of Dr. Aceves in MX

    1) When was your surgery with Dr. Aceves? June 15, 2010 2) How much weight have you lost? 25 lbs 3) Tell me (briefly) about your stay in his facilities? (i.e., cleanliness, friendliness of staff, attentiveness of his nurses) outstanding on all counts 4) Did you have any complications, even if they were very minor? I ran a fever for a few hours in the hospital and had all the nurses and Doctors fussing over me. It went down quickly. Two days after returning home I developed a throat infection unrelated to surgery (I have allergies) and felt sick for 2 weeks. I had to take antibiotics. 5) If your child wanted to use this surgeon in the future, how would you feel? absolutely 6) How did you get to/from the facilities? I flew to San Diego. My cousin's wife lives in Dana Point, CA and is from Mexicali. She picked me up at the airport and we drove to Mexicali. I used Dr. Aceves driver for the trip back to the airport 7) How difficult was it to schedule your surgery? Not very. I did not get my first choice because Dr. Aceves was attending a conference that week. I scheduled 6 weeks prior to surgery 8) What kind of pre-operative requirements does his staff have? I had to submit a lengthy medical history. I was on a lo carb diet for 2 weeks pre-op. He only required 1 week. Fasting before pre-op blood work and the night before surgery 9) What do you regret about using Dr. Aceves? Nothing. 10) On a scale of 1 to 10, what would you rate your overall experience using Dr. Aceves? 10 __________________

    Tango Nightmare!

    From the album: Just Me

This is the "only" picture of my backside in years and has driven me to WLS. My friend, Cami, is a Tango teacher and I look like a Yeti compared to her..and she isn't skinny. Course I AM 5 10', but that much weight is killing my knee and stopped my Tango classes in their tracks (the knee, not the weight).

19hrs and Hurricane Florence is still here

@Liz C long, but this 6+ year VET/GOAL is worth it - ROFLMAO not staying in touch"!! 1,000 whips with a wet noodle!! (carbs, carbs eek!!) Glad you survived Florence and surgery went well. burping LOL - i use to burp so loud my daughter in GA. could here me from Syracuse, NY LOL I would TRY to stop eating as i was "approaching" being full.(before i burped) Hard to always tell (judge) when to stop. It's like asking someone on a bus "what stop do i get off for X street".? He says, "watch me and get off one stop earlier" LOL Don't push yourself - if you're too tired, (and you can afford time off from work) be easy on yourself. I read in your other post you are walking 2-3 miles a day!! That's great if you are feeling ok. But you don't have to walk that much. Walking is great to do any time - take it slow - if your body says no, no, no, stop i'm hurting - STOP . even though you are walking over 3X period - you sound too tired. don't overdue!! Take a nap, rest - pamper yourself!! you are worth it. Take yourself off that back burner. As far as yogurt (even only two tablespoons) you shouldn't experiment before the proper time. IE before you are supposed to go onto the next phase of eating. pureed', mush, soft, solids. Ok, end of well meaning lecture don't concentrate on the # on the scale - you will go crazy. Take your measurements periodically, and you will see, feel the change in your clothes. Everything takes time thinking of the bigger picture - great attitude to have!! I see you were born on Valentines' day!! How sweet is that!! LOL December 2019 - daughters wedding day - you will look amazing - that dress is a great goal to look forward too good luck newbie kathy

    First Meal Post Op

Yes it's so crazy. Well they did give me extra mashed potatoes. But I didn't eat hardly a thing. I've lost 19 pounds so far. I'm hoping ill lose more this week. I've been walking a whole lot.
  7. I had restriction and reached my sweet spot after my second fill. Some people never need a fill . . . some need 10 or more . . . it all depends on your body and how aggressive your doctor is. Some doctors do very, very tiny fills and this will cause you to need quite a few to get anywhere. I did have an unfill-refill-unfill after my second fill but this was only due to pregnancy. I suspect that I would still have been losing well on my second fill had I not conceived. However, even without fills I still saw my doctor regularly to make sure I was losing and was on track.
  8. I've been on this liquid diet for 5 days :frown:. My urine is starting to smell like chicken broth :frown:!!!! But, I have lost 10 pounds, so I guess chicken broth is not a bad price to pay........LOL. My starting weight was 239, and today I weighted in at 229. I guess I don't miss the chocolates too much:sad_smile::wub::sad_smile: Can someone please let me know when I'm to start the Protein shakes, and if there is one in particular that you love?? Thanks, and next time I sign on, you'll see less of me:thumbup:

How do you get your fiber in?

Glad you posted this topic. About a month ago, I met with my surgeon and nutritionist. I complained that I'm struggling to get to my goal weight. One of their recommendations was to increase my fiber. They provided me w/a list of fiber recommendations. Their fiber goal for me is 20grams. I track on my fitness pal and I struggle to get above 10! A few suggestions they gave are: 1 flat out 100%wheat Hungry girl flatbread (7g), Bob Mills Organic high fiber hot Cereal ( a whopping 10g), Fiber one Protein bar (5g), rolled oats, squash, edamame, various nuts and seeds& green veggies (spinach, broccolli, Brussels sprouts) . As I write this, I noticed that I Have only eaten a few of the items on this list, which could be why I struggle w/fiber.

    On my way

Hey we are neighbors. Well the dr calling may be a good thing, that is when I'm planning on having my surgery. And the thing you said about the race is what our pastor said today in his message. 4-19. And it doesn't matter how you start out but how you finish, so hang in there and you are in my prayers and thank you. As for self pay we are using some savings and having to save the rest. I told my husband I didn't want to take that much money away from the kids and family, and his response was money now or you for another 10-15 years. I still have mixed feelings about it and then there is the added pressure of all this. I have failed at every weight lose thing I have tried and now this much money and what Im taking away from my family, I just pray this is the right thing to do. I know that the only way I will get through it is by the grace of God.

TY So much for your helpful information...walking right now kills my knees and thighs. But I will try 5-10 minutes a few times a day.

    Starting Over Again

Yeah mine requires 6 consecutive months with a nutritionist with the last 2 years which I have a year straight so that's no biggy. I am worried my insurance will deny it and how much I'll need to pay out of pocket. I know some of what they want. Will the Bariatric program tell me? I know they usually check with insurances about that stuff. Yes, they will verify what is needed and let you know and my 10/26/2016.

PMS'ing and irriated by whine bags

Before I was banded, the whining on here sometimes got on my nerves a bit.... but then since I've been banded (10 days postop)... I've done my share of whining! Not on here.... mostly to myself. This is a total life changing thing. Those of us that have used food in fun, sadness, recreation, boredom, heck, food was pretty much involved in all I've ever done.... it's a big BIG wakeup call when you can no longer have it that way. My "crutch" has been kicked out from under me and it is HARD! I'm still not quiet at the point that I'm "Happy" I did this... but I'll get there. Changing a bad habit is hard.... I think it would be easier if I could go "cold turkey"...but we gotta have food, calories, protein to live and be healthy. So it's hard having to change the way you look at your addiction while still having to consume it. Is it worth it? It will be. Am I worth it? YES! Will I get there? A baby step at a time. We will have success as long as we keep moving forward. One pound at a time...

    Still uncomfortable

Still not Fixed Up, ready to cater my Own Pity Party, I am losing much hopefulness about the whole Proceeding. And yesterday by accident? I never lost conciousness during the attempt, didn't hurt, had numbing medicine sprayed in the back of my throat that you gargle and then swollow down, stated I would be going to sleep-*- *well I laid there and watched on the monitor just like Dr Noria did. Asked the 2 other doctors, the nurse and most of all, Dr Noria? Did you guys realize I remained awake? Dr Noria got a look on her face like a child caught taking a swipe off the top of a freshly frosted cake and licking her fingers **Changed the subject, said" I dialated you to 10 mm", sounds good until you realise before first attempt I was at 9 mm.Progress IDK, do you? And I am at 7+weeks, a point where many, if not, all of my Surgery Day twins, Sleeve or RNY, are on purees and transitioning to soft and regular foods. Yeah ***I know we ALL make our journey toward final health, final size and weight goal, and a Bee-You-tee-full Future but OMG do I even have one? Someday I will be the scrawniest, sad-looking old broad seen, carting a thermos of bone broth or something similar. And watching the rest of the WLS community bouncing by happily. I expected hard, difficult but Mount Everest, Mount Denali even Kilimanjaro all in one, Nope didn't book for that?🎢🌆

    need advise...

Its all relative. If you're losing weight whilst eating that, then you dont need a fill! It really is a misuse of what the band is meant to do, aiming to fill and fill and fill until you cant eat more than half a cup or cant eat a certain food. The band is actually meant to decrease your appetite and increase satiety - YOU have to do all the rest of it yourself. Which means avoiding bread if you dont want to eat it, not making yourself so tight that you cant eat it. However, it is common not to be able to eat bread. Look at it this way - I currently have no fill and can easily eat an entire two bread sandwhich full of salad fillings. I could also eat several Cookies after that - but I most of the time I choose not to. I have not gained any weight in 2 months unfilled and am currenly at a BMI of only 19. Do I need a fill? If you're losing weight on ten pieces of bread a day then dont sweat it. Weight loss is what matters, not choking yourself off until you cant eat. However if your loss is very slow, or has stopped and you're doing everything else right but not feeling that satiety where a meal lasts you a good couple of hours, then its fill time. But dont judge it on what foods you can or cant eat. I could eat bread with my band 3/4 fill, with no problem at all - but yogurt, ugh. Impossible. Its different for everyone.
  21. I'm female, 42, 5ft 10, very active (run or do boot campe 5 x per week, work as a teacher, on my feet all day) and I ate around 1500 a day to lose. I think you might be UNDER eating, but really, you've lost a LOT and it does slow down and become very stop start. Just keep at it and eventually it will start coming off again. It took me an entire year to lose the last 10lb. I guess I could have eaten less, but I was happy enough at the higher weight, and I'm very active and now I can eat whatever I want without gaining so I'm really glad that I've obviously preserved lean body mass and have a healthy metabolism.

Bandster Hell and the Honest Truth

I appreciate the comments and am so glad I am not the only one who feels this way about the experience thus far. Ironically the day after posting I felt restriction for the first time eating rice too fast during my lunch break. I had to laugh at myself during the whole uncomfortable episode, thinking to myself "well...you asked for it". The pressure did not last more than 10 minutes, but I was so happy about it. This was probably just a mild precursor to the real experience of a green zone overindulgence, but I was very grateful for a sign that the Lap Band is actually there.
