  1. K Be Good!

    Kaiser PreOp

I know this may not seem like the truth but it does go by fast. Keep making those lifestyle changes and you’ll do good. Upping my water was one of the best things I’ve done so far.

    Vomiting

I had a 2 ounce pork Chop last night and did fine, so I think I ate too fast when I vomited, but I do notice pork feels heavy in my stomach when I eat it now, so what you say makes a lot of sense! Sent from my Nokia 7.2 using BariatricPal mobile app

    Cheese obsessed

NOTE: Lest people be triggered, most of this should not be construed as advice. It's what works FOR ME, and we all have different habits, predilections, experiences, and psychological and physical responses. I'll fly counter to typical advice and say that while a conscious effort to control hunger is important, I also don't deny myself pleasure, just keep it limited. Unless my doctor/nutritionist has told me that I MUST avoid cheese (which I don't understand), I think it is perfectly fine to have a portion of cheese as long as the calories are factored into daily intake. I get pre-portioned cheese as opposed to cutting it from a bulk block. Personally, I like the packs of pre-portioned 80-calorie pepper jack. For me, having things portion controlled is critical. Far better that I satiate enjoyment in some small capacity than depriving myself entirely. IMO that has negative psychological repercussions; the whole "forbidden fruit" syndrome. I'm going to say a bad bad thing: I'm eating complete garbage. I like my bacon burgers. I like my spicy chicken nuggets... but I'm just eating a whole lot less of it than before I planned for surgery. I've been candid about this with my nutritionist and her response was "We can make all the recommendations in the world and lecture you, but ultimately you have to do what works for you... as long as the results stay on schedule." Which they are. I'm still continuing to lose weight and am at my lowest weight in over 30 years. I know my limitations... and eating without enjoyment doesn't work for me. I keep portion size small, focus on proteins, and avoid the carbs whenever possible. For example if I feel the need for fast food, it's likely JUST the above... no side dishes (fries, onion rings, etc.). I get what I enjoy without the excess baggage. I'm sticking within 900-1400 total calories per day. I don't necessarily recommend this for anyone else; it's what has worked for me given my habits and psychological makeup. Others are free to disagree.

Am i gonna puke all the time??

I HATE puking. I dread it so much that If I had morning sickness during pregnancy I would have never gotten pregnant again after my first child. That being said I have gotten sick maybe 4-5 times in almost 2 years. The first 2 times was early on and was a learning curve into what eating too fast or too much the other 2 I think I didn't chew enough or it was random. I felt nauseated but it wasn't puking like before surgery. TMI Some people describe it as foam but I had excessive drool/spit about 30-60 minutes after eating too much/too quickly and had this excess salvia that I spit out multiple times over a half hour and then a few bigger spit ups of food and salvia almost like a infant and I felt better almost instantly.

Am i gonna puke all the time??

No Only time i every have thrown up is when i pushed it to fast or over ate
  7. I am two weeks out from surgery. I dumped for the first time Sunday (Nov 1) after my morning medication and some swigs of sugar free Powerade. It was god awful. I thought I was dying. I had an episode of SVT (of which I have a history that started long before surgery) with heart rate in the 160s, then my bowels got super loose all of a sudden. I got lightheaded and dizzy and I thought I was going to pass out. I broke out into a cold, clammy sweat. Then I dry heaved for a few minutes. The dry heaving made it click for me that it was dumping. I was surprised to have that happen on a basically empty stomach. I hadn't had any issues before, but I guess I just took my pills too fast and it freaked my body out. I have been more careful with how fast I take my pills since and I haven't had that issue... but it was scary. I really did not expect it. Sent from my SM-G950U using BariatricPal mobile app

    3 days after surgery

Yes! I take a couple different brands I had some stock of a few different ones because I was afraid of toleration after surgery. So I take Barimelt: Iron and Vitamin C, and Biotin these are fast melting. I take Bariatric Fusion: Multivitamin and Calcium. The Multivitamin is a capsule and the calcium is a soft chew not a gummy. 😊

    Dizziness after eating

I had my first episode of dumping this morning and I literally thought I was going to die. I hadn't eaten anything. I had just taken my morning medication with some sugar free powerade. My bowels got super loose, and I made it to the bathroom just in time. I got extremely dizzy and lightheaded, started sweating and I was worried I was having a heart attack and there was no way an ambulance could get there fast enough and I was going to die for sure... and then I started dry heaving. Nothing came up, but as I dry heaved, the other symptoms subsided almost immediately. I hollered to my fiance "Honey!! I think I'm dumping! And then everything settled and I was just weak and shaky. If that's dumping, and it's unpredictable as to when it can happen, even when I haven't eaten anything, well that's just scary. I hope your symptoms resolved. I sympathize deeply. November 2020 sleevers

Not sure if this is what you’re looking for love_thatgirl, but I had a pretty strict preop diet (very low carb, low calorie, no sugars/grain/starchy food) for a few months prior to the liquid diet. I dropped almost 50 lbs on it, and started the full liquid diet on Tuesday. I’ve lost 4 lbs on the liquid diet. So not super fast, but still losing. My stats: 5’10, HW 339, CW 286. I’m pretty sure this means I’ll be in the slow losers club post op but I am fine with that. My big goal was to be under 300 before surgery, and then to lose as absolute much weight as I can prior so I can take advantage of my post op time. I have a loooot to lose and I’m worried about stalling out at like 225 or something. I want 2021 to be the year I see 165 on the scale again.

    Pre-Op Questions

Surgery How long will surgery be? For me it was a little over an hour, but it really depends on the surgeon and if everything goes to plan. With surgeries you never know and every person is different. How long will I be in the hospital? For me it was three days and two nights, but again, it depends on the person. Will I have a drain? I didn't. But again, everyone is different. Conditions that need to be met to be discharged? For me it was having my pain under control, making sure I was up and walking, and drinking enough. I stayed slightly longer because I wasn't drinking enough to where they could at least keep track. I was more comfortable chewing ice, but they couldn't keep track of that so they eventually took it away from me and gave me a bunch of these little 1oz cups so that they could track how much I was drinking. Recovery When can I give breast milk? Ask both your surgeon and your child's doctor when it's safe. What does pain management look like post-op? It very much depends on the person and their pain tolerance. I have TN so I have a very HIGH pain tolerance and so I basically took four of the 30 Norco pills my surgeons office gave me. I mostly stuck to tylenol. It's not a walk in the park by any means, but it was bareable. When to return to work? How much time off? They gave me 4 weeks off. I, however, was only back at work for two weeks and then went on leave again due to different health issues. Non-surgery or weight related. What do you think about vitamin patches? When can I take pills post-op? I was told not to use vitamin patches for the DS or Loop DS and to stick to pill or chewable vitamins. Maybe your surgeons office is different? They're super expensive though if you do the patch thing for the amount of vitamins you need for the DS/Loop DS so it's not the way to go imo. As to vitamins... I was told to take chewables for the first month, but not to start them until day 7, but your surgeons office may be different so ask. What is normal for the first 6 weeks post-op? I'm 9 months out and my memory is a little shaky when I think that far back but I remember being really sore and hurting from both the gas and the incision from where they removed 85% of my stomach from. I had low energy for three or four weeks. I also had to sleep on the couch for the first several days after I came home because my bed was too hard to get out of and it hurt. I needed help showering for the first week or so as well. And getting up hurt because of that incision where they removed my stomach. Sitting hurt also because of it. Once I was up though it wasn't so bad. Post-OP What is my goal weight? You're goal weight? No idea. My goal weight is 180 pounds. I have low standards I guess lol, but my surgeons office said it was a good and realistic goal weight. They want me to get to 160 if I can, but I'd be happy with 180. Heck, I'd even be happy at 185 as both take me out of obese and into simply being 'overweight' BMI wise. I have low standards lol. It comes from being over 300 pounds for 15 years. I'm 215 right now and that's smaller than I was when I started HIGH SCHOOL! (I was in the 230's then) I was 32 when I had my surgery btw. I'm 33 right now. How long does it take to digest food? I think that depends very much on how much you eat. If I eat a little snack I feel like it digests faster, but sometimes when I eat a meal I have on occasion eaten too much because I ate too fast and it took a while to process that it was too much for my stomach and felt full and nauseous for about an hour or two. What will my stomach capacity be at 3 months, 6 months, 12 months? I think I was eating about 1/3 cup at 3 months (about 3 oz), 1/2 cup at six months (around 4 oz), and now at 9 months I can eat about 3/4 cups (about 6-7 oz). But I feel like it's probably different for everyone. I hope this is helpful in some way...

    Help!

I'm a little late to the party, but... Return to your plan. Returning to plan isn't sexy, it isn't fast, but you already know it works. You already know dieting doesn't. Diet's end then you return to bad habits. Your plan is forever. Good luck, Tek

    Help!

I started to regain as well. Fortunately for me I have a group of family and friends who have had bariatric surgery and we counsel each other. Here is what I have been doing to combat the weight regain. 1- First and foremost I stop eating after 7PM and don't start eating until 8AM the next day. This has a double effect. First it's an intermitent fast AND it stops me from eating/snacking before I go to sleep. As I found, two very important steps to take as it does have a positive effect on your body's ability to lose weight. 2- ANY exercise that I can get I do. Whether it's walking stairs, doing yard work, walking instead of driving. 3- I don't eat processed foods. They are empty calories and have no nutritional benefits what so ever. 4- I don't snack. I eat only when I'm hungry during my 8AM-7PM window and eat to get the feeling of fullness. 5- Adhere strictly to the 30 minutes before and 30 minutes after rule for drinking water. I hope this helps.
  16. I am 5 years out and have maintained my weight loss. I weigh 155lbs. I still follow the rule of protein first. I generally limit carbs for most meals. I fill my plate with protein and veggIes. I can probably eat 2 cups of food so maybe I stretched my stomach? Certain foods are no longer part of my every day diet but I may eat on a special occasion. Those foods would be junk food, soda, fast food and desserts. A normal day for me would be iced black coffee for breakfast. Salad or soup for lunch, protein bar for snack before working out. Dinner is sometimes high calorie protein like sausages, ribs or hot wings. With a vegetable of course and sometimes a small amount of carbs. At night, I sometimes snack on nuts (protein first!) and a glass of wine. I drink plenty of water throughout the day. I do not count calories. I weigh myself weekly and tighten up on the diet as needed.

    November 2020 sleevers

Had my pre-op labs and EKG today. The hospital is super speedy, I will give them that. I got a text when I got out to my car that said the results were available for viewing! I waited until I got home. Everything looked good except my white blood cell count, which was high. It seems to always be high on my labs. I am assuming it is from inflammation from my Fibromyalgia. My regular doctor hasn't seemed concerned by it in the past. My temperature was normal, and I don't think I have any kind of infection... I hope! They did not give me any Rx beforehand, but said they would call in pain meds to grab on my way home, and because they are a hospital, they are allowed to do that without a paper Rx. So I assume they will just give me the Zofran and Scopolamine patch when I get there Monday. I got a bottle of hibiclense in a cute little bag from the hospital, and instructions on how to use it the night before and day of my surgery. I asked my doctor if anyone has ever asked for their stomach. LOL... he said yes, actually, but not often... and they can't, but they will take pics if I want. 😂 One thing that totally SUCKS is my surgery is at FOUR PM. I cannot eat OR DRINK anything after 8am. Said if I get thirsty, put water in my mouth, hold it a bit, and spit it out. When surgery is in the morning, the fast is okay, because you're asleep overnight... during the day, going that long without food or water is going to be 😮 Interestingly, he said that if I feel good enough, I can start on soft foods (scrambled eggs and such) early... some of his patients start as soon as THREE DAYS out. 😲 I dunno if I wanna push it.

    Any October Sleevers?

Lmao it felt so far away and yet everything happener so frigging fast! I am now one week post op! No complaints or complications so far, except liquids are getting on my nerves. I see my surgeon tomorrow for my postop followup appointment and I am excited to graduate to soft/mushy! I am craving every soft/mushy food under the sun! I was dismayed to experience hunger so soon, but it is satisfied quickly and it isn't constant. The water weight I gained from all the fluids they pumped into me in the hospital is almost gone, so I am super stoked to see what the future holds! CIGNA requirements HELP

I was approved by Cigna this month. I met the doctor for my initial consult in mid August and the patient insurance/billing advocate was like, how fast do you want to get this done. I didn’t want surgery until November because of things we already had on our schedule, but I could have had surgery already. I had 1 psych eval, 1 visit with a dietitian, h pylori test required by doctor, and an online meeting/class about weight loss surgery. That’s it, my pre-op appointment is next week and my surgery is the following. I didn’t have to jump through any hoops and my surgery was approved in 2 days after the weight loss clinic submitted my paperwork for approval.

    Food Before and After Photos

Sometimes it's both. I've seen a lot of post where people will experience eating too much or too fast and have an adverse reaction to it (discomfort, vomiting, gas, etc) So most programs advise us to eat very slowly learning when to stop instead of trying to fit it the "last bite" Other times it's learning that just because you can eat more of something doesn't mean you have to especially early on when food is measured out (if that's what your plan dictates) or years out when trying to maintain a caloric balance to remain in maintenance (no losses or gains)

    Vomiting

This actually was my first time having pork carnitas from that restaurant. I normally get my favorite food, tacos, but since it was takeout I knew they wouldn't be good once we got home and also, too many carbs. The pork was kind of greasy so maybe that had something to do with it, along with how fast I ate and not chewing thoroughly. Sent from my Nokia 7.2 using BariatricPal mobile app

    February 2020 Post-Op Thread

Good to hear from you @Lily66! I read about some folks who are only eating 600 or 800 calories after this long and I am amazed. I am losing slowly (very slowly) but mostly steadily. I feel so much better, I am wearing size 12 to 14, and my daughter jokes I have Benjamin Button disease. I have not returned to the gym since surgery (Covid), but I really, really need to do some weights. I own weights (2 lb and 3 lb); I bought resistance bands thinking I'd like them better, I have downloaded an 8 minute work out, and a 12 minute one...I have done everything but actually DO THE DAMN EXERCISES! lol. But with winter coming fast I need to get my heart into it. You sound like you are in a great place. I'm with you, if it stops here I am beyond grateful. I'm eating healthy, and keeping my protein high. I have also enjoyed a glass of wine on a few nights by the fire! Life is good, all in all, except for the whole 2020 being the worst year ever. Continued good luck to you!

    Vomiting

Honestly it could be either. Eating too much too fast can very well make you sick. But then so can a food you don’t tolerate. I personally can’t tolerate beef and sometimes pork. It does anything from make me cramp, to make me puke. have you ever eaten the pork carnitas from that restaurant? It could also be something in the sauce.

    Week 5 concerns

Today is week 5... Some days I feel the restrictions while eating and other times I don't feel anything, but I stop at my portion size. Is that normal? It makes me wonder if something is wrong. Also. I haven't had any trouble eating soft veggies and such. I am getting liquids in quickly, but not too fast without trouble. What I am getting to is this... I seem to be doing ok, but is something wrong for me to be doing good and for tolerating things that others might not? TIA
