Really hoping I haven’t sabotaged myself
Arabesque replied to justsillyme's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I agree with the others: it’s not the cashews. Stalls are a common & important part of your weight loss. It’s when your body shuts down to take stock of your changing needs & then resets things like your metabolism, digestive hormones, etc. They usually last 1-3 weeks. Do look for a lunch that is going to offer more protein (1oz cashews provides only 5g of protein) & includes other foods for a wider variety of nutrients. Try a meat like chicken or tuna, or tofu or a boiled egg, etc. with a small side of salad vegetables, or an omelette, soup, etc. Have a chat with your dietician for some meal ideas -

Nuts are pretty calorie-dense and can cause weight gain if you eat a lot of them, but 1 ounce of cashews is about 160 calories (could be more if they have added ingredients, e.g., honey-roasted) and have no more impact on your weight than 160 calories from any other food. Are you including that in your 700 calories per day or is that in addition? Either way, you are under 1000 calories per day, which is low enough that you will continue to lose weight (especially if you're working out 60-90 minutes per day). Stalls are very common and normal. Weight loss isn't linear. Stick with your program and your weight loss will resume. I'm guessing that BMI is in error. I suspect the weight is meant to be 235 pounds and not 235 kg (518 pounds). While it's possible that she actually weighs 518 pounds, her goal weight of 150 kg (330 pounds) would be unusually high for a goal weight. Still, even at a weight of 235 pounds (BMI of 39), less than 1000 calories per day is well below TDEE. -
Sometimes it can feel like our hair looks even thicker post-op, and that could be a delightful result of your hair growth journey. It's always nice to see positive changes and feel good about them. Regarding the Biotin supplement, it's true that its effectiveness can vary depending on the specific cause of hair loss. It's good that you stopped taking it after finding out it may not address your particular hair loss issue. If you ever have any concerns or questions about your hair or hair care, Nova Medical Hair Transplant Clinic https://goo.gl/maps/pRjccyvtrnVZKmgi7 is an excellent resource. First week post op is not a very good indicator of weight loss surgery success. I knew I would be swollen up with IV fluids and inflammation, so I avoided weighing until my first follow up with the doc. I used to be a slave to the scale for many years. When I became morbidly obese I never looked at one. Until I attempted another diet of course. So now... although I wonder if I'm missing the thrill 0f watching the pounds drop off daily during this honeymoon phase, I only weigh once a week. I'm just trying to preserve my sanity. LOL

Hospital Stay/Exercise Must Haves
BypassTheBS replied to hannah grace's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Put 1 gown on open back and put another gown on open front....no need to bring a robe. I brought the bare minimum toiletries (bar soap, facewash, tooth brush, Listerine, deodorant, panties) and used the tooth brush, face wash, clean undies. I didn't shower there. I was just ready to go. I wore a pretty sun dress and crocs in and the same thing out. The only things that were consistently utilized were my long phone charger, carmex and silk bonnet for my long hair. Congratulations and good luck! -
3 Days Post Op - Just Documenting My Journey

Yes, overdid it on the walking for sure. Lesson learned. Thanks for what to expect on the poop. This is new to me, since I'm used to the opposite (5-7 times a day). I guess I'll go buy some miralax, because I've read here about the constipation and obstructions. I was surprised at first to when the Dr recommended the VSG and not RNY. I like to read, read, read, and I thought the bypass was going to be the option. The Dr said the sleeve can make GERD worse, and make people who didn't have GERD get GERD, but he said it's 10-20%, not 50/50 or worse odds. I even had Barrett's Esophagus that resolved a couple of years ago after years of PPI meds. I still consulted with my gastroenterologist prior to surgery. In fact I had an EGD in March because i was having stricture. He said even as I was dropping the rest of my meds (during weight loss) I would likely have to remain on the 40mg omeprazole for the rest of my life. I was already planning on that, so I made the decision to try the sleeve with my eyes wide open that I might need a revision. The first night I had a little reflux when I got in bed, but haven't had any issues since. I am still taking my PPI. Thanks for the response! -
3 Days Post Op - Just Documenting My Journey

Thanks brother. I'm looking forward to the same. I'm not sure if it's the initial weight loss, diet change, or both, but I'm monitoring my BP in the morning and at night. The doctor said do not take BP meds unless I see it climb to either 150 (top number) or 90 (bottom) number. So far it's consistently in the 120/70 range, so no BP meds. It seems crazy to me that I'm off the BP meds that quickly. Looking forward to the rest. -
3 Days Post Op - Just Documenting My Journey

A little about me. 45-year-old, male. Fought my weight my entire adult life. Chronic IBS. GERD. Heart attack in 2016. Heart disease. Diagnosed with obstructive sleep apnea in 2022. Fatty liver disease. Metabolic syndrome. Diagnosed with Ehlers Danlos - Hypermobility Type in 1997. Currently have chronic pain in both shoulders and both hips, especially when sleeping. This is due to the EDS. I have SLAP tears in both shoulders as well as partial rotator cuff tears, and frozen shoulder on the right side. Married. Twin 13-year-olds. Quality of life really hit bottom. I decided to take control of my life. I had my first appointment with the Dr back in November. Just had VSG on May 18th. Severe gas pains for about the first 5 hours after surgery. Like really bad. Gave me dilaudid to help with the pain, and it did knock the edge off. I was able to get up and walk, drink a little, and pee. Let me go home about 6.5 hours in recovery. The first nights sleep was brutal. THE HICCUPS! Why did no one tell me about the hiccups?! I was able to wear my apnea mask just fine, but every time I got up to pee (about 5 times total), the hiccups would start almost immediately and last for 30 minutes or more. I was shaking the bed and keeping the wife awake, they were so bad. Also had some mild reflux with a little bit of the foamies (I got those before the surgery when the reflux would flare). 1st day after surgery, much better. Very few hiccups. No nausea. Got all of my fluids and protein in. Even walked about 8000 steps (I would've done anything to make sure the gas pain didn't return). Now I'm on the third full day after surgery, and each day has been better than the last. Still tired. Off pain meds for the entire day today. I can't stomach the clear protein, so I'm drinking full (creamy) protein diluted 50/50 with water. No issues so far. I think I have overdone it with walking too much too soon, because I feel really tired and weak. I'm going to cut the walking down to 5000 steps and see if that helps. My ABS are pretty sore, especially immediately after sitting/laying. They tighten up pretty quick. Still a long road ahead, with 1-2 shoulder surgeries later this year. And I know there's still a long road ahead with my weight loss journey. I appreciate everyone's candidness describing their issues (poop, slime/foamies, etc). I like to know what to expect. No regrets. -
not all bariatric diets are low-carb. Some are balanced. Also, once I got a ways out, I mostly just counted calories (although making sure I met my protein and fluid goals) losing weight via exercising is of course possible, but really tough. People overestimate how many calories they burn by exercising. According to research, exercise is much more effective in helping to maintain weight than it is to lose weight. Of course, it's always excellent for your overall health and people should do it (if they're able to, of course) - but as the primary weight loss tool, it's supposedly not that effective (well...unless you're spending a few hours a day at the gym or are into running marathons - that kind of intensity would probably do it!) I'm eight years out and have never reached the point where I've been able to eat without being concerned about my weight. I know from experience that if I eat too many calories for more than a couple of days, my weight will gradually start heading north again. Honestly, a lot of my never-been-obese friends are the same way- they have to watch what they eat. Unfortunately I think that's the way it goes for a lot of people - obese or not. Not many are blessed with the ability to eat whatever they want and not gain weight. also, you'll eventually get to the point where you can enjoy the things you do now in moderation. Nothing is off-limits for me And DS patients can generally eat more than RNY and VSG patients because of the malabsorption (RNY has some malabsorption of calories, but only for about a year, and it's not as strong as it is in DS people). Although if I'm not mistaken, I think DSers do have to be more careful with carbs - IIRC, they don't digest them well - and I know traditional DSers don't have to worry too much about fat (but not sure about SADI patients) - but check with your clinic. They'll know for sure.

Hello. I’m brand new on my weight loss journey. I’m almost 2 weeks post op. My goals after surgery are to lose weight and to be in a healthy BMI. I am not going for any particular weight number goals or anything like that, I just want to be able and active for my kiddos. I’m having a ton of fear about my forever diet. I feel like I still want food to be a part of my life and I want to be able to eat food without being concerned about weight. Initially I was under the impression that I would be able to eat foods I enjoy, but just in moderation. Upon learning more I’m seeing that low carb diets are basically mandatory from here on. Is there a way I can deficit increased exercise and activity level for more carbs in the future? I am determined to make the gym a large part of my routine and I want to exercise more and have less restrictions as far as what I eat. Is this possible as a Bariatric patient? Are things done to me now that would make this type of lifestyle goal not possible? I’ve had the Sleeve and a Modified Duodenal Switch or Sadi-S. I may be extremely naive and what I think I want now could change in the future, but that’s my goals.

What's the average rate of loss
Arabesque replied to LindsayT's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
Exactly everything @catwoman7 said. There is no right or wrong rate at which to lose your weight just what is right for you & your body. The stats only give you an idea of what you might experience. As with all stats there are always outliers: those who lose more & those who less less. Your rate of loss doesn’t affect whether you’ll lose your weight either. Just may mean it takes a little longer or a little more quickly. By the way 15lbs in 3 weeks is not slow. That’s averaging 5lbs a week. Can’t be unhappy about that. I’d lost about 13lbs at the three week mark & my surgeon & dietician were always happy with my rate. -
Are you telling me surgery may cure my Pillaris? O joy! Is this what you had @Arabesque? I've been plagued with it since a young teen. Drives me nuts. This condition develops when the skin produces too much of a protein called keratin, which can block hair follicles and cause bumps to develop. The bumps are usually on the arms, thighs, cheeks, and buttocks. They're white, sometimes red, and typically don't hurt or itch.

What's the average rate of loss
catwoman7 replied to LindsayT's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
other than people the size of those on "My 600 lb Life", most of us seem to lose somewhere in the 15-25 lb range the first month (yes, you can always find some who lose 30 lbs, but unless they're way bigger than the average WLS patient, they're outliers). Since you've lost 15 lbs in 18 days, you'll likely end up on the higher end of that range by the end of a month. I don't remember where I was at 18 days out, but at the one month out, I'd lost 16 lbs, and I was MUCH heavier than you (and starting BMI is one of the factors that affects your rate of weight loss). So stop worrying about it - you are fine. there are so many things that affect your rate of weight loss that you have little to no control over - age, gender, metabolic rate, how muscular you are, genetics, starting BMI, etc). The only two factors you have much control over is how closely you stick to your clinic's plan, and your activity level. If you do well with those, you'll lose the weight, whether fast or slow. In the end, it's how well you stick to your plan, and not your rate of weight loss, that determines your success. If you're good at following the plan and rarely veer off, you'll do fine. -
My rny was May 1st, and I've lost 15lbs since surgery (30 since the start of pre-op diet). I just feel like 15 lbs is low. It's an average of less than a pound a day. I've already stalled once at about 2 weeks out. I'm just looking for some guidance. Thanks.

Massive Regrets Frustration - you’re my only hope
ShelleyBelley replied to ShelleyBelley's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
@Blessd1 I looked through all the recipes and some look amazing, some not so much but we are all different. They’ve given me lots of ideas though so thank you so much for this. I can’t find the strawberry vinaigrette however, do you have the specific link for the homemade recipe please? I’d love to try it along with the cherry one too! riccotta I adore so I now searching on homemade meals. im struggling with meat even ground chicken and beef at the moment so it may mean I’m now vegetarian. I just need to learn a new lifestyle but will wait until the camera down my throat reports. I met with my surgeon and he’s suggested charcoal to help with the flatulence. Double up on PPI in the meantime and advised I shouldn’t hesitate to take upto 3 cyclizine a day for nausea. Keeping the little bit of food I manage to get down in me is priority. Only problem is the anti-vomit meds make me zonk! I’ve lost 5 stones in 13 weeks (which is 70lbs) or 32kg. He didn’t seem concerned about this and seemed to act like it was expected or normal even but it does concern me at how fast the weight is dropping off me. I have another 5 stones to lose at most to hit a BMI of 25 so in less than 3 months I’ve lost 50% of my excess weight. Yes it’s good I’m losing weight BUT the well-being is more of a priority for me and it’s zero at the moment. I’m tall at 5 ft 9 inches too. When I’ve read weight loss averages on MGB patients, the average weight loss is 60% of their excess weight in 2 years! This comparison is why I’m concerned. I don’t personally think I’ll suit being a size 10! I’ve never been a size 10 UK clothes size and the excess loose skin potential comes with its own set of problems too. But I’ll worry about this and deal with it if it arises. so now I’ll wait for the camera investigation and keep taking it day by day. speak really soon chelle x -
Resources for partners/family members?
Arabesque replied to D-mel's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Dr Matthew Weiner & Dr John Pilcher have excellent videos (you tube) on a range of bariatric topics really aimed at you & not so much your family members but they are very informative & an excellent resource. As for food, you may find by soft food you will be able to eat some of the same meals. Soups, stews, braises, mince dishes, etc. You may have to make ingredient substitutions, change cooking styles as you slowly reintroduce certain foods & ingredients but generally meals the whole family can eat - you’ll just have a much smaller portion. Great opportunity to try new healthier, more nutrient dense recipes & new/alternative ingredients. I live alone but regularly spent weekends with my 80+ yr old mother. She ate whatever I cooked & ate without issue or difficulty. I’d often have dinner at family or friends or go out to eat I just made sure my friends new what I could or couldn’t eat & made careful choices. I’d check menus before going out so I’d know what I could eat or what I could ask to be modified. I ate many of the meals I always did simply by making modifications to the recipes so it would be appropriate for my needs. My friend cooked for her family & basically ate that same meal from solid foods. For example making a pasta dish - she’d use zucchini noodles or would just eat the meat sauce component. Having tacos - she’d eat the filling not the taco shell. A bonus of your smaller portion size is leftovers. I freeze leftovers all the time. They are easy meals fir you to have when you don’t feel like cooking or for when your family wants something which isn’t a good option for you. Your weight loss period is the time you use to establish better eating habits & food choices. When you stop losing you don’t go back to eating how & what you used to eat. That’s why every other diet we were on failed & we’d regain weight. All the best. -
My surgeon doesn’t require a pre op diet. So far I haven’t found any stats comparing long term weight loss between the two. If it’s strictly for the reduction of liver I don’t understand why all docs wouldn’t want that. I’m just two weeks away and not required to do the liquid diet, which is good because I have a music festival to go to next weekend and I don’t think beer/cocktails is part of the liquid diet no matter how clear the liquid is 🤪

What was the moment/day you decided on WLS?
qtdoll replied to longhaul68's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
My doctor brought it up! I actually never even assumed itd ever be an option but I had 2 failed weight loss attempts with him w pcos & thyroid issues. He brought it up, reffered me to the program, did the classes just to see if it'd be a good fit for me & it worked out! I'm very grateful -
I believe that good skin happens from the inside out. Hydration, nutrition etc. Slathering on a bunch of lotions helps in appearance and prevents the loss of water in the outermost layer of our skin. Does dry go away after Bariatric surgery? IDK, I'm only six weeks out but hopeful.
-
Yes, blame it on the hormonal change. I was never one to use lotions etc but after the surgery I try to. I got the rinse body lotion so I use it before getting out of the shower and do not forget. I also have very dry scalp, I use coconut oil once a week but I heard castor oil is also good for hair loss. Sent from my SM-S916U1 using BariatricPal mobile app

What was the moment/day you decided on WLS?
mcipanda replied to longhaul68's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
Years ago, I considered it but decided on a last ditch effort to try medical weight loss instead. I also exercised and got down to about 185 (I’m 5’3”). I was able to wear clothes that I felt were “me” after years of wearing crap. I swore to myself I would NEVER get back over 200 and for 7 years I worked to keep it that way. When Covid hit, everything changed. I lost my job and was the sole provider for my family. The scale moved up, finally breaking 200 last year. At that point my clothes started getting tighter and I fell into a deep depression… the worst I’ve ever been… even having thoughts about not being here anymore. I felt like a total failure. For me it was very much like life or death. After one very difficult night locked in my own mind, I decided to have the surgery. It was January 25th. I would do it no matter what it would take, financial or otherwise, and thank goodness insurance covered 80%. I’ll never forget the day I made that decision. It was the first time I felt hope in a really long time. -
5 days post op... am I feeling too well?
CarolineLittle replied to ptsmith109's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Good for you! Luckily most of us do come out the other side of surgery just fine. I'm 8dpo and doing great. I'm losing fast too. We're both heavier so it makes sense and it is the liquid stage. Losses will stabilise soon and not be at such a crazy rate. I'm losing about 2 pounds a day which is nice but it's very short term, like a honeymoon phase. Keep up the good work and join our May Buddies thread if you haven't already. -
Hi here is my story I had the vertical sleeve gastrectomy in 2014 with hiatal hernia repair with the intent to loose weight to boost my fertility as we had been trying to have a baby for almost 2 years. I found myself pregnant 3 months later. It was not my intention to get pregnant so soon after surgery but we were thrilled. I did end up loosing about 120 pounds over all. Here I am 9 years and 3 babies later However I got back up to 286lbs. I am 36 years old and we decided we are done having biological children so I wanted to try and start my weight loss journey again. Reached back out to my bariatric office, and they scheduled an EGD to check out my sleeve and investigate as I do have heart burn. They found I had some gastritis and a hiatal hernia. In addition the top part of my sleeve had expanded above my diaphragm. So on April 27, 2023 I had another hiatal hernia repair and partial gastrectomy. He said that had more efficient ways on fixing my hernia than they did 9 years ago and that the partial gastrectomy would be kind of tightening up my sleeve at the top that expanded. I am at 270lbs today so it is nice to see the scale go down but I find myself frustrated that the weight is definitely not coming off like it did the first time around. I know it takes time and that I am doing well but the scale just will not move from 269-272lbs over a week and I hate it and just wanted to vent. I'm currently doing puree and I'm trying to make sure I get in all of my water and protein. I am not overeating for sure. I don't feel hungry at all and I have to remind myself to eat. Well that's the gist of my story and I just wanted to put it out there and see if anyone can relate and maybe we can help encourage each other, thanks for reading.

Looking for women 46 who had the sleeve
pintsizedmallrat replied to Jaz&kar5's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I'm 40. I am 20 months PO (as of today!) and have lost 150 pounds off of a very small 4'10" frame. I have some loose skin on my neck and stomach and under my arms. The only part that is really noticeable is on my stomach, but since it's under my clothes it's not a big deal to me. It has tightened up considerably since my weight loss has slowed, and I feel like it's going to continue to shrink. It's minimal enough that I don't feel like I need or want to have skin removal surgery. -
Hello everyone! I thought I should share my story. I am 42 years old. I Was never really overweight when I was younger but in my early 30s weight started to creep on. To the point that I went from 125 lbs at 31 up to my highest of 245 lbs at 39 years old in 2020. When I got to that point I started trying everything to lose weight. But to no avail. Nothing seemed to work. In April 2022 I went to a seminar to learn about different weight loss surgeries. I then decided to do it. My first appointment with my surgeon I decided that the gastric sleeve would be best for me. My surgery date was 11/30/22. I had gotten down to 217 from 245 by then. Now six months later i am officially 100 total lbs lost! 72 since surgery. I am 145 today which puts me in a normal bmi range. I only need to lose 15 more to get to my goal! I am no longer diabetic, my A1C was 7.1 in October. Got it tested last week it is now 4.9! I no longer have high blood pressure and I feel great! If anyone reading this is considering surgery, don’t be scared to get it. It was the best decision I have ever made! Thank you for reading this! ❤️
