  1. To tell or not to tell... this is such a hotly debated topic and there are valid reasons for both. In the end, do whatever makes you most comfortable and makes your life easier. I chose not to tell. I'm very proud of my decision to have WLS but I have low patience for BS. I love a spirited debate and don't mind a difference of opinion, but most people are uninformed about obesity and WLS and carry some serious prejudices. I don't want to hear anyone's uneducated comments, no matter how well intentioned they are - or worse, get watched like a hawk. I don't want that kind of irritation in my life. I told everyone that I was following a doctor supervised liquid diet for a few weeks (like medifast). It helped answer the rapid weight loss questions too.

    Food issues

I was having issues with that for a bit after surgery. I just didn't want to eat and even thinking about taking my pills in the morning made my stomach queasy. I just stick with food that had little taste such as vanilla yogurt, took my zofran and changed my multi vitamin bc that made me nauseated. Eventually I felt better. Now I haven't had any nausea but can't wait to be able to stop the omeprazole. He said 3 mos on it. I ate bc I knew I had to. I hope it goes away soon for you, but I would take the nausea med and eat something mild, I figure there was a reason they gave me like 6 bottles of liquid zofran in my prescription before surgery.

    Exercise suggestions with bad knees

I was on no big for a couple years prior to surgery and the surgeons office told me it was an NSAID and I had to stop it 2 weeks prior to surgery and not take it anymore. I just took their word for it and stopped. It really helped me. Didn't take pain completely away but I want spasming and throbbing all night long. I'm going to have to ask about that then. Unfortunately the steroid injection did nothing for me. I had a nerve block the day before surgery bc he wanted to make sure I could comfortably walk post op, amazing I had not pain for 3 weeks, but now here I am. I did go through physical therapy also before surgery and they gave me exercises to help stretch and strengthen my gluteal muscles. My physical therapist have me his business card and said to call if of like you schedule more sessions after surgery, they're located upstairs from my ortho doc's office. I absolutely don't want narcotics, I'm sensitive to pain meds. I have arthritis in my spine and last summer a flare up pinched off a nerve in my neck and I had horrific nerve pain in my arm. I thought for sure I tore a muscle. Anyway I was on Gabapentin and everyday I felt foggy. I ended up having to take it all at night so I could function better at work. I swear since I've been off of it my mind is so much clearer. Thanks for the advice.
  4. Your sister has the right plan, I got guilted into it by my husband because we have two small kids and she is going to "help" while I recover. I honestly have told 4 people in total and not sure when I'll be ready to share beyond that -if ever. The way I look at, people judge me bc I am fat, they'll judge me bc I had to loose so much weight in the first place, they'll judge me for being a mets fan...and the list goes on and on. Right now, I'm just worried about how I judge me- the rest will figure itself out ...oh and my MIL is un invited to thanksgiving hahaha

    Vitamin recommendations

Slow loser too. Sleeve to rny so I heard I'd lose slower bc of it. Chewable multi vitamin and extra iron daily.
  6. I talked to my Dr about it and he assured me he would take good care of me after my sleeve in Mexico. He has already had another patient have it with no problem and he said he took care of her also. I am looking at September only bc I can't get into Dr Illian before then. He is booked. Good luck everyone!
  7. I'm a little further out than you at 7 weeks but returned to work today and had to grab something from the back and realized I hadn't drank anything yet today. I grabbed a 12 oz glass of water and guzzled almost the whole cup. Amazed myself bc I'm thinking if I can do this a few times a day there's hope of reaching my fluid goal. But pouch def not stretched, full off half a chicken breast.
  8. I don't track my stuff. [emoji53] I believe it was done correctly, but idk. My surgeon don't do it anymore bc insurance companies weren't paying on patients. So the hospital was having to foot the bill. So right now he isn't Practicing.

    Surgery canceled ☹

Update: I was started on Victoza and, three months to the day, my a1c was down from 11.4 to 7.4! It's really nice to have normal daily readings again too. Best of all, surgery has been rescheduled to 8/17!! I'm so excited to see this journey through. Began 10/16, Approved 03/17, Canceled 04/17 bc of high BSG, now bypass pending 07/17
  10. I will talk to you, I'm 8 months out now and I remember the roller coaster you are on! It gets better it just takes some time. You are doing fabulous! You are looking fabulous! Unfortunately your husband maybe feeling insecure, I don't know bc you didn't say. Everyone handles it differently

    Orientation!

That's great! Yes I am going through Kaiser in Orange. They told me the 12 week classes start the first week of every month and I was hoping to start them in the beginning of August but she said I prob won't make that one bc I need to do my labs, ekg and consultation first. Did they have any earlier appointments for your consultation or was that the earliest?

    Menstrual cycle changes

I don't have Mirena but I do have the one in the arm. I hadn't had a period in a while which is an advantage to the BC in the arm. But I got my period 2 days post op, last 7 days. Then at 2 weeks post up it came again and was very heavy. I was thinking it was because of all the body changes and of course stress.

    Newbie

Hi Stephen2 Thank you so much! My only struggle was that, my doctor had me do the pre shrunk liver diet 10 days pre op. When the time came post op and, really needed to drinks strictly liquids, I was already burnt out and didn't really care for the sight of broths or the protein drinks. I pushed through for the remaining days and, now I'm in the puréed phase. Honestly, the only puréed things I've have is: I let oatmeal overboil, to get extremely the, put vanilla protein shake in it. I did the same with cereal(let it sit). Mostly I've just been trying to get my protein in through liquids. I'm still trying to understand what that "full feeling" is. Is it the pressure I feel? If so, I usually don't take anymore than two bites just in case bc I'm unsure. My first 2 wk follow up isn't until week after next so, I plan on asking. Stay strong Stephen! We're all in this together. It can only get better! Thanks for the advice

    Straws?

So, we went to dinner for my hubby's birthday last night. I ordered a lemonade bc I was dying for a drink south some flavor instead of always water. Not thinking, I drank it quite quickly and easily through the straw. Didn't even phase me until today that I used a straw. I was told its a no no bc it will make you swallow too much air and cause you discomfort. Honestly it seemed to go down easier and may even make it easier to reach my fluid goal. Are there other reasons I can't use a straw? Does anyone else use a straw?
  15. If we are to believe the set-point theory, then this is true pre-op. It SHOULDN'T be true post-op, if the surgery does, indeed, reset our set-points, as seems to be the case with the rats. You've read the study on bariatric rats, right? Obese rats have the surgery, lose to normal weights (on a restricted diet), then when fed free-choice again, they maintain their losses, and continue being normal rats. The difference between rats and people is the rats don't have emotional issues or head hunger. They eat when they're hungry (and they were fed healthy rat-chow, not doughnuts!), stop when they're full. Our new set points may not be "normal weight". There is good reason to believe it is something higher than that (like retaining 30% of excess weight). But the losses to that point should be relatively easy and straightforward, and relatively easily maintained. We just have to eat like the rats.

    Dating is hard

I don't think it is moving too fast either. That is pretty much expected behavior from a man that is seriously trying to court you. Men ask you on casual dates when they are trying to be casual. I have certain expectations on how I want to be treated and I expect a man to meet those expectations. I feel like if you ask someone out and they don't want to do that kind of date, then they are not the person for you. People should date like minded compatible people. The issue is, no one courts or dates like civilized people anymore. I am not with that Netflix and chill or sit in Starbucks like it is the library BS. Back to OP. Dating is a numbers game, you have to kiss a lot of frogs to find a prince. If you are serious about dating you need to date 2 to 3 guys at a time and let the best man win. Dating one guy at a time is a huge waste for a lot of reasons. I always think after WLS we blame a lot of issues on WLS, when really it is just hard to find someone period.

    Stall Help

It sounds like you may have a lot of processed foods in your diet - shakes, sausage, ham and cheese are all processed. At this point you have nothing to lose from experimenting, but I find not all proteins are created equal. I avoid processed meats. And, at least for me, I tend to retain weight when I eat processed foods. I would also recommend that you change up your proteins - do fresh tuna, salmon, pork, chicken, try a vegan day once a week with tofu or beans, etc. For the animal proteins spend your money on the best choices (organic, grass fed, no antibiotics, no hormones - as good as you can get it). It's not like you are eating a lot anyway. In the past on diets I have found that if I eat the same thing every day and the same number of calories every day, I loose slower. So I try to change up my calories and proteins, even though what is easiest is to do the same thing and get in a routine. You may also want to experiment with fats - good fats like avocado, EVOO, etc. and see what happens.

    Is it normal?

Good bc I am surprised I am so calm. I told my doc I will need something to calm me down a littler b4 surgery. I stress out when a needle is involved w things, I am sure Wednesday morning I will be stressed and ready to get everything completed! :-)
  22. Day 6 of Post Op!! My mom left on Saturday night but luckily now I can get out of bed by myself and sit on the toilet with no help! Yesterday was a hard day getting in my liquids (33oz total) I think Sasha (my sleeve) is not a fan of milk products Bc eating yogurt, cottage cheese, milk muscle or premier protein is really hard and it causes a lot of Burping. Today I've been focusing on zipping some water every 15mins! As for pain...still present but not debilitating. I hope all the post-ops are feeling better today! And preops good luck!
  23. Hi everyone, 6 months after having gastric sleeve surgery I became pregnant. Everything was going good. At my 22 week appointment, I was told that baby was measuring 1 week behind but not to worry. They recommended I gain about 9 pounds in the second trimester and at that time I gained 8, which they said was fine. On week 23, I started to get heartburn. I guess bc she's getting higher up. With that I've been feeling a little apprehensive about eating as much as I was. My sleeve also seems a bit more restricted. I weighed 226 on the first day of my pregnancy appointment. At my last appointment I was 235. Now I'm back at 230. She's supposed to be gaining a half a pound a week and I've lost 2 pounds in a day. I'm not sure what to do. I should mention that I do take heartburn meds now but I'm still losing.

    Protein bars?

I am 6 wks post op and was cleats to start a regular diet. My nutritionist said try to have protein shakes bc they go through you more quickly. I didn't think you ask at my appt. Does anyone eat protein bars to get more protein or are they just too filling this early on?
  25. Hi everyone, had my surgery on the 12th. Pain comes and goes, I've been burping a lot, focusing on walking and water intake. My mom is staying with me until tomorrow. I still have trouble getting up from bed and standing up. As for food: water, pedialyte, bone broth and chicken broth. Not hungry yet, mainly Bc the pain is all I'm focusing on, currently my pain level is between a 3-6.
