    August surgery

I had my sleeve done on August 26th, two days after my birthday. My food funeral was a vanilla cupcake and a fish sandwich. I wasn't as nervous as I should have been. But there were no complications, and I stayed a night in the hospital. Didn't get much sleep. I didn't have a lot of pain, either, but I couldn't keep the Tylenol with codeine down anyway. I had that moment of "WTF DID I DO TO MYSELF?" anytime I vomited up the Tylenol or the potassium stuff they tried to give me. Having to take pills with tiny-assed sips of water was hella frustrating! And I barely ate the broth they brought me-- it didn't taste very good and I just wasn't interested in anything but the water. I had mainly gas discomfort, and when I got home all I really wanted was water and sleep. I didn't need the pain relief or the medicine to prevent nausea. I think I felt like tossing the cookies once at home, but I hadn't eaten anything so that was pointless. They put me on enoxaparin, Prilosec, and the worst-tasting vitamins in creation, but I got through that bit. Moved on to different vitamins, and am much happier. I'm on regular food now, eating maybe 3 oz., but I worry that I may not be eating enough. I still prefer to do my protein and nutritional shakes, because, TBH, sometimes I hate the feeling of my food digesting! Does anyone else get that? The other thing that annoys me is not being able to eat as many veggies as I'd like because "protein first", LOL. For the most part, I had a fast and easy recovery, and I'm grateful. I was working out, but between the incision where the excised stomach was removed hurting at some point and enduring The Crimson Beatdown, I kind of slacked off. I'm still losing, but I need to get back on track very soon. I think I'm a slow loser but some sleevers have said they didn't think so. NSVs make me happy, though! People are noticing I'm changing, and I can walk through a shopping trip without back pain. It's glorious. Did anyone's surgeon go through their navel area? Mine did, so I have four visible scars. I hate that he used staples to close-- the scars are noticeable af. The navel scar was glued. If you're on Instagram, let me know! I'll follow you. Mine is @gata.tale.to.tell .

    Anyone for October 2020?

Maybe try the dulcolax, they're tiny pills and worked super fast without any cramping. Sounds like there has been a few hurdles but I am glad you're in good spirits. Hope you get some relief soon.

I do too however his office staff isn’t the best lol so I am like is he just as unorganized. They miss big things like sending me to get labs done or telling me twice before a test I have to fast.

    November 2020 sleevers

Oh man, I am craving meat, which is ridiculous because I eat meat so rarely most people I know think I’m a vegetarian. Time for an exciting dinner of bone broth. Good luck to everyone who has upcoming surgeries this week! You are going to rock it. I would have never believed I would feel this good on Saturday after my Tuesday surgery. On Tuesday I was miserable, in pain, and nauseous. Wednesday I was still not feeling well at all. Thursday I was feeling a bit better but still struggling. Friday I started feeling pretty ok, and today I feel great. I’m on track to get in my protein and liquids and vitamins, I feel good, and my incisions aren’t bothering me at all. If you have a rough time the first few days, please know it DOES get better, and at least in my experience, fast!

    Terrified- surgery Tues

I am 47, and 46 at time of surgery. I did stay over night in the hospital per my surgeon’s requirement, but I would have been fine at home. As it was, I got to my room at 6 pm and was discharged by noon the next day. I did not receive any blood thinners. I started out with diabetes, hypertension, high cholesterol, sleep apnea, GERD. I had gastric bypass with hiatal hernia repair. I now take just one blood pressure medication and everything else is resolved at just over 4 months post op. I have been on blood pressure medication since about age 30 when I was about 165 pounds, so don’t expect to ever go off it. I walked a lot after surgery to prevent blood clots. When awake, you should walk around for 5 of every 60 minutes. You don’t have to walk far or fast...movement is the key. If they feel you need to stay, they will keep you, regardless of plan for outpatient. I agree with others that you should discuss your concerns with your surgeon. Good luck!
  6. I get tightness behind my rib cage if I eat or drink too fast. I get a full or heavy feeling if I take that extra bite & eat too much. It’s just at my chest not my belly. It’s like I’m filling up into my oesophagus.
  7. For the first four months post op I would cough when my pouch was nearing its limit. I’ve learned my lesson of eating too fast and too much - it’s certainly unpleasant.
  8. I had the sleeve in 2013. I lost a lot of weight. I have regained more then I would like but I’m still happy with the sleeve and no where near the size I was. I have had issues with GETD, vomiting and horrible heartburn at night. Finally got a doctor to listen to me and referral me to a surgeon who immediately knew I needed surgery to fix the problem. So know I’m scheduled for the bypass 11/23. My pain goal is relief from the GERD, vomiting and heartburn. However, I’m wondering how much weight will I lose, how fast will it come off? What are some tips for the second time around. i
  9. Last January I started this journey. I started to get the tests done and then part way through as we all know Covid stopped almost everything. Then in August I started getting the remainder of my tests complete. And today I scheduled my surgery! Still have a few appointments for pre op and to meet with the surgeon to discuss which procedure I will have. But as long as a resurgence of Covid doesn’t happen till next year I will be having my surgery on December 14th. Hopefully enough time to recover and feel better before Christmas and my one son’s birthday on the 30th. Still not sure how to feel. It all happened so fast after nothing happening for so long. I know the surgery will be best now as I am Pre-diabetic. Blood pressure is easily controlled by meds and I’m still relatively young at 43. For being 320 that’s really the limit of my health problems so I know it’s a good time. Plus I have 5 kids and a wife to provide for and be around for. Sorry for rambling. Just trying to process it all right now.

    Constipation

I was constipated too. I finally used Miralax - it works fast and doesn't give me cramps like traditional laxatives. You can mix it into your protein shake or Gatorade Zero.. You can not taste it. I still take it from time to time.

    6 weeks out - Expectations

I didn't lose much more than that in the first six weeks and I started out at over 300 lbs. Like someone else said, you're barely in the obese category, so there's no way you're going to lose as fast as someone starting out at 300 or 400 lbs. You are doing fine!

Anyone pre-plan to only have lapband a year?

I've had my band for almost 13 years and i love it! I had my surgery in March 2008 and lost from 200lbs down to 140lbs at 5'2" which i maintained ever since (including through 2 pregnancies and a few fluctuation along the way. In the past year i have made some more habit changes that led me to drop another 20ish pounds leaving me at about 120-125lbs at 5'2" with a BMI of around 22. I wouldn't recommend planning to have the band removed after a year for 3 main reasons: 1) It's a surgery and going in expecting to have 2 surgeries within a year doesn't sound like the best idea (but that's between you and your husband and the doctor) 2) The band is CRUCIAL TO MY ABILITY TO MAINTAIN MY WEIGHT - for me personally, the lap band (and weight loss surgery in general) has always been about maintenance. I had yo-yo dieted my whole life and wanted off that roller coaster. In fact, i knew i could lose the weight (even if it wouldn't be easy) but why bother if i was just going to gain it back like i had ALL THE OTHER TIMES BEFORE. That hurt more than anything and i just couldn't do it again. And i was right, the band has been EVERYTHING to me in my maintenance journey! I would never have been able to do this without it and the habits it allowed me to build...which leads me to #3 3) HABIT CHANGE TAKES TIME - your husband needs to give himself the time to adjust to his new lifestyle both during his losing period and after. One of the advantages of not losing weight at epically fast speeds is that your body and more importantly mind have a chance to adjust with you! In order for your new habits to stick, you need to give them time to develop and teach yourself that you can conquer the inevitable bumps in the road. There is nothing wrong with not wanting to permanently change your anatomy and some people like that the band is not permanent. But it is no small life change. For me it has been THE BEST DECISION I EVER MADE. Happy to talk to you more about it if you ever need any support or perspective! There are still a lot of us successful veteran bandsters out here who might have some useful perspectives if you are considering a gastric band. Hope that helps some!
  13. I agree with the advice you can generally eat what you’d like once you’ve well established your maintenance. However, there are a few things you have to remember: portion control, frequency, what your system will tolerate & your danger foods. At 18months, I don’t have rice, pasta & bread. I avoid sweets (desserts, cakes, biscuits, ice cream, cream, etc.) 99.9% of the time. I don’t add sugar or artificial sweeteners to anything. I’ve reduced alcohol to probably once a month. No fast food but have had Asian takeaway three times when with friends. I call it my reduce, restrict, avoid plan. It allows me to have a little of certain foods (the odd treat) limit other foods & avoid the foods which would equate to weight gain for me or fill up my tummy too quickly. I switch up foods to healthier choices & use healthier cooking methods. As some random examples: I make chia pudding (milk, milk powder, vanilla extract & chia seeds) if I want a dessert. I use an air fryer for a crispy finish instead of frying, use non stick pans & spray olive oil. When I had the takeaway I chose either chicken & cashews (braised) or steamed pork & prawn gyoza (ate the filling only). I just don’t buy certain foods - if they’re not in my house I can’t eat them. I also deleted the home delivery apps off my phone - lol. I take my lunch to work so I’m not hitting up the food courts. It’s not easy and I work at it every day. I just hope one day I will have ‘rewired my brain’ as @AZhiker mentioned & it will be a little easier. I just don’t want to be overweight again. But in reality, it all comes down to finding what works for you. Good luck.
  14.   Hi there obviously i am a newbie. My weight loss battle has been going on like too far. up and down good then awful like 2 times  first was  320 lbs now this one at 285 lbs. I've had it.  i'm so tired of being visible and invisible.. loved for my thinny, and deplored by my fatty.  So over a year ago i began classes for the nutrition phase of my journey to bariatric sleeve surgery.  that took 6 months, then  Covid 19 hit and postponed all of my pre surgery goals.  my good friend, and i started together she was like 2 week set go before i got refferal; not to far off each other but after we finished classes i still had 1 month to go before i had to go thru all the medical clearences she was right on track and had most of them done then Covid 19 hit, and she pulled right thru and i got stopped. She now had to wait for the surgery part to re-open in may and she and another gal i know got there gastric sleeve with in a month of each other. but here i was left in the dark ages for a over due period of time. then i got a  first visit with my surgeon, and lo and behold; a child in my classroom and his family caught Covid 19!!! so the 2 weeks i was on quarantine it was when i had my initial visit. "postponed again"!!! so finally about 18 months after the first  start of my bariatric journey on November 4th 2020 I got my date.  The hoops up until my surgery was another wild ride. Talking about the offices RE:gastric offices and my primary "get it together"........ I was doing catch up up until the day before surgery.  Kinda was trippin me out.  My bariatric surgeons office didn't tell me to begin my 2 week shake fast before my pre-op; so they were looking at each other, and said you should be fine just start now. i did it but i did have to have a salad 1 time a day. i cheated on Halloween and had a lot of candy and 2 double cheese burgers but went back to the salad shake diet. the week before i went to pre op i was 285, but just a week later i was 273 12 lbs in 1 week just on 3-4 shakes and a salad.   November 4th arrives I am super terrified. like " oh my god what have i done Mo" here come the needles and naked and nervous comedy hour, and getting ready to be put down in a very vulnerable  position being strapped down and a needle coming at me..... time for one last joke and bam!!!!!!! im waking up, and **** just got real.  I'm afraid to move (i got a pee) no i don't gotta pee. can i stand up???? ahhhhhh no my fat belly just had surgery.  All i can think is what did I do to my self. Why did I do this? my first nurse was ok but I didn't have to deal with her much cuz i was in and out. the second nurse was kinda like a super doushe.. i might look cool and all but I don't use drugs, and please stop telling me about being a drug seeker. I just had surgery on my guts bro. it's not like i'm coming off the street with a false reason to grab a quick fix. yes i told him in several different ways. This fool had me swallow full pills they wont go down he said have more water. Ok i'm in fear of my tummy not absorbing these well i've barely eaten at this point. not only that he keeps on telling me if i don't poop i wont be able too go home . ( that was false) So I asked him for some pain killers again and he began again with the drug seeking yar yar... He came back with a needle from "Planet Gigantar" wielding it like a sword and told me it will have to go in intra muscular, and he assured me that he was a great shot. I'm like"way way way way wait" isnt there some thing else?????  Yes he said i have Toradol. it is a non narcotic...  ok put that away and give me Toradol.. Will it work?  He said we shall see.  the Toradol worked better then the Norco.  the Norco made me feel awful.  even though i begged and pleaded for Torodol to follow me home ; they don't have it in liquid or pill form only for use in IV.  I just really wanted to be out of the hospital. My kids are with my friend so my surgeon calls and said i will be going home soon i also asked him about the poop thing and if i can get a go home of Toradol not the norco. He told me the same thing ****** bag did . Ive been at  the hospital all dang day, and all the nurses tired of me whining hearing me nagging about going home.. all of a sudden a very Sheikish/Mangoish doctor comes in all man Sassy, and very appalled at the incompetent staff he has to work with hee hee, and informs me that they had dropped the ball.. he had an order in for me for the morning to get my upper gi and that he needed that so he could release me this afternoon, but Nooooo, and he apologized for the inconveniences due to the staff at the nurses desk.  He also told me that if radiology dosen't get to me soon i will have to stay. POOF...... He was gone like a genie in a bottle.  So they wheel me down to radiology.. the to radiologists were low key bickering as to who needs to do who's job. " stay in your own like man". lol ok back to me .. I was tripping because i was just there a few days before doing the pre-op fluoroscopy  i had to drink a lot of contrast.  I told the East Indian guy that i just had surgery he said oooh.. it will be ok..  I aid no its not the nurse back there said no NPO that means nothing by mouth right? he leaves comes back with this contrast takes 2 containers, and he is mixing and the lil fat dude with meat/ onion breath very heavy and lingering is telling me if i don't take the contrast I probably wont be going home tonight. The faster you do this the faster we can get you home... Ok i did it  now i know how much my tummy can possibly tolerate. Also when we got back to the room about 20 min later i did my first lil poopy, and signed my discharge papers. everything is done. I am cordially wheeled to the lobby, and my bestie lovingly waiting for me in her lovely Toyota Siennia...  Also if you think that you will be on a vacation and getting your rest on at the hospital?  No you will not .. hey if the phlebotomist comes by more then 1 time a day say  Oooh nah nah.. I had my blood 4 hours after surgery then at 4 am the next morning. Then a crazy lady came thru about 5 hours later with her lil box a vials  i go wait i just got my blood drawn.. She says are you sure? im like Ooooh here we go again..  Yes i am sure. she looks at her paper work.. Are you sure whats your name? Birth date? do you have a room mate?  Bing, Bing ,and No.  Shes like let me check your file ill be back. She comes back, and says; your right i should'a checked.  So it may seem like i'm very demanding... I have to question everything because some of the things they do there are real unnecessary. while you try to rest and relax they will wake you or disturb you every hour every 45 min every hour  every hour and a half. its either them or the IV beeper or you got to use the bathroom or your surgery site is hurting, and you cant sleep because of the pain an some ****** nurse wants to play games..

    November 2020 sleevers

Ran out of the OR room! Hi everyone! I’m new here. My sleeve date was 11/6/20 however I’m not sleeved. I was/am excited, terrified, anxious, nervous... now I’m stuck. Here’s what happened.. I showed up at 5:30am I was taken back , given an IV in my hand and a shot in my stomach... then the nurse put an extra something something in my IV.. I was told it was Ritalin. Well after 10 mins I began feeling 🥵 hot, suffocated, itchy, and terrified! I began looking around to see if it was only me and as everyone else looked fine I quickly realized it was something they gave me. I called the nurse over to me and politely asked her to remove the IV I was leaving. I was calm on the outside but freaking out on the inside!! I couldn’t tell them what I was feeling I just wanted to 🏃🏽‍♀️ run!! I needed fresh air and fast!! Whatever they gave me magnified my fears 1000% ! But now I’m at a loss 🤦🏽‍♀️ and a little depressed about the entire ordeal. I don’t what to do now. Has this happened to anyone? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

None of my tests were fasting. Stool samples generally do not need to be fasting.....you need to eat to poop right! 🤨😂 I crack myself up. Sorry. You may have needed to be fasting for your blood tests if they were concerned about diabetes or high cholesterol.

    Risks Concerns

Im older, 51years, and had the gastric bypass for I gained so much weight from illnesses and injuries. I went up to 550 lbs and everything in my body hurt. I couldnt hardly walk and forget about setting down in a tub. My degenerative disc disease in my back was causing severe pain everyday. The doctors told me of the risk, but for me it was about lessing the pain i felt. I needed help after recovering from heart failure from the flu. I decided to do it. I lost 278 lbs after my bypass. I will tell you that i did have some pain afterwards from the drain they had to leave in, but that was not for to long. Before I knew it I was dropping weight so fast that i was in disbelief. It was a wonderful feeling. I could walk around again, dance with my husband, play with my grandkids. All those things are the exact reason i got mine. Also it takes commitment, i started to gain back and am working to get back on path. However, i wouldnt have changed my choice ever. Good luck.

I am a fast track patient w Blossom Bariatrics in Vegas. Anyone else?
  20. Temperature still normal. No symptoms. I guess having this kind of "diary" will be the new normal for medical staff working with ER patients because the corona tests are not fast enough for a quick screening at bedside.

It kind of gives me the creeps when thinking about how many colleagues and other patients could've possibly been infected by one patient only with unknown corona infection. Yes, we all wore N95 or FFP2 masks and the patient wore a simple mask but anyway...

    LOSING TOO FAST?

800 kcal per day is a very typical number and consistent with good weight loss. Our loss tends to be heavily forward loaded with a lot of water weight loss early on - your loss rate should be slowing right about now (do a search for the "three week stall") as your body pauses to catch up. As a reference, I lost 32lb the first month, and then 15 each of the next two months, so things do slow down. (What is happening is that your body, when it goes into a big caloric deficit as it does immediately after your WLS, starts drawing of your body's glycogen reserves - basically stored carbohydrate - which takes a lot of water to stay in solution. So your body is throwing off a lot of water as it burns the glycogen. Then, when that runs out (after 2-3 weeks typically) the body has to start drawing on its stored fat (which is what we want!) but it can take a few days (or weeks for some) for the body to shift gears to do that, so don't panic if your loss suddenly stops for a while. Also, your loss rate will be lower once you start burning your fat reserves, as the fat burns more slowly than the glycogen. The glycogen burn may also be why you are feeling a bit weak and tired, as that is your quick response energy store, and you are running low. Try working in a little more carbohydrate - oat meal, cream of wheat, unsweetened apple sauce are common - to help keep those levels up a bit more. In theory, our body is supposed to burn our excess fat to make glycogen, but that doesn't always happen as quickly as we need it (this is why marathoners will "carb load" with a lot of bread and pasta the day before an event - to make sure their glycogen levels are as high as possible before they go burning it all off the next day - we don't need to go that far, but the same principle applies.) Overall, it looks like your are doing great, and I wouldn't worry about losing too fast until you are within maybe five kilos of your goal weight - if you get there withing six months, then you may need to slow things down so that you don't overshoot the mark too far; otherwise, I wouldn't worry about it. (And yes, my doc's RN also told me to cut back the exercise because I was losing too fast - but that was at six months, and about 10 lb from goal weight, and while I wasn't inclined to cut back on what is my normal maintenance level of exercise, I did start ramping up the calories to start slowing things down.)
  22. Hi all, My surgeon has said my weight loss is too fast & I should increase my calories or decrease my activity. My nutritionist disagrees & says i shouldn't be forcing calories if its making me uncomfortable (it is)! I was 128kg when I started the LRD on 12th oct, 125kg on surgery day on19th oct & I'm now 114kg. So 14 kg in 26 days. Height 175cm. Does this seem familiar/ok to anyone else. I'm managing my protein & water quantities most days but do feel a little weak & tired still. Any advice/opinions would be welcome
  23. Infection rates are soaring. I was a contact person again (and a fellow colleague who assisted me) and now we've gotten some sheet where we have to take note of any symptoms and we have to take our temp every day for 14 days. Luckily so far we're both alright.

I guess this will be the new norm until we have a test fast enough so patients without symptoms can be isolated sooner.

Well, I have to keep this diary. Luckily everything still feels normal.

"Being a contact person" will most likely be our new normal I guess. Hopefully there'll be a vaccine soon but I doubt it.

Mine was actually all NON fasting. the stool sample: I cheated. I used a container I already had that was clean and did it at home. I put the sample in the one from home. Then I transferred it to THEIR labeled container when they gave it to me at the lab, I just used their bathroom and transferred the sample/turned it in. I agonized over it because if I’m perfectly honest: I wanted the testing done ASAP and I only poop once every few days or so. 😅 After they had the samples in I scheduled a chat with a nurse who asked me a bunch of medical questions (like do you drink, do you smoke, exercise, highest weight, smallest weight, why do you want the surgery...) she went over my lab tests... and that was it. I passed the first medical clearance.
