    Can't Eat Meat

Cottage cheese, tofu, beans... etc. Check the forums list. I believe there are posts on vegetarian bandsters.
  3. Hey all, So last Monday I made a decision to go vegetarian. It was based mainly on the fact that meat is too heavy in my stomach when I eat it. And it seems the further out I get, the more things I find upset my stomach. That being said, I don't miss meat as much as I thought I would. It turns out there are still things to eat in this world that have protein and aren't meat. I particularly like veggie patch "chickn" cutlets because they taste like chicken nuggets. Also smart life makes portobello burgers that are good. Has anyone else gone this route? If so I would like to hear what you eat so I can have a better idea. I'll tell you one thing... The numbers have been flying down the scale since I stopped eating meat.

    A Few Questions...

@Floridays- is that when you first started? Where you hungry? I really don't think I'm eating enough protein- I'm a vegetarian and eat some seafood (pescatarian if you wanna get fancy )
  5. Farro and Dried Cranberry Soup with Kale - a nice creamy and tangy soup for fall with a grain Protein. Lots of vegetarian options here! http://soup-a-woman.blogspot.com/2012/11/procrastination-soup-farro-and-dried.html

    October Sleevers-How Ya Doin?

I'm new to this site and just had my surgery on 10/25. The nausea was horrible at first and I couldn't keep any liquids in, so I ended up staying in the hospital a bit longer. My Phase I was Clear Liquids for one week. Phase 2 was full liquids for one week. Now, I'm supposed to be doing Phase 3, which is pureed foods, but it's been challenging. Since surgery things that I perceive as sweet make me extremely nauseous, so I have been avoiding them- witht he exception of diluted Diet/Light juices. Yogurt and puddings (sugar-free, fat-free) still make me ill, as do the recommended eggs. So, I'm trying cottage cheese, fat-free vegetarian refried Beans, and applesauce. I'm a vegetarian but compromised with my surgeon and agreed to add fish/seafood until I am taking enough Protein in on my own. So far I am down 35+ pounds since the day of surgery- according to my scale. I don't have another follow-up with my surgeon until the end of November, so I will have to wait to see what that scale says. It's a stressful thing not seeing the number go down though. I mean, with as little as I'm taking in but as much as I am doing, it just feels like I'm lagging behind others. {I'm not allowed to return to my exercise routine until after my one month follow-up, so all I'm doing is walking every day, as much as I can.} Does anyone else get frustrated? The plus side is I'm feeling better every day. I'm off most of my medications save for Topamax and Omeprazole. The hunger isn't there, at all. I'm forcing myself to eat and drink because I know I have to, but the desire is gone- thank goodness! I hope everyone else is doing well!
  7. Scrambled eggs, soups, soft cooked veggies, most restaurants will have a vegetarian dish. Pot roast with gravy if you chew well.
  8. I was banded on Wednesday the 7th. I am on day four now, and I feel like I am starving all the time. I have tried Protein drinks, popsicles, juice, gallons of Water (I have no restrictions when it comes to liquids), thinned out Soup, broth, decaf tea and full caf coffee. Milk and yogurt. The only thing I can get down without a hitch is the water, and apparently that is a good thing. But I make a small amount of soup (very thinned out) and sip the whole thing, and right away I am in the kitchen looking at everything that looks good. I think it might be in my head --- well, I am pretty sure some of its in my head, as I have been a vegetarian for years now and my son's ham slices look delicious! I keep thinking "another week of liquids!???" I want apples, and toast, and fajitas, and ............ How to calm the hungries?
  9. Hi Everyone, I am in the same boat -- This is the second time I am going through a program and anyone I tell that I am considering lap band surgery tell me I'm crazy and that they've heard a lot about how it doesn't work and people gain ALL their weight back. I've been heavy all my life and need to do something soon. I am 60 years old and have a beautiful grandson I want to be around for. Right now I am in the surgery program again. I have lost 28 lbs on my own (between the first time I signed up in 2010 and when I returned in October 2012. I have met with the psychologist, attended a group support session, met with the nutritionist and have an appointment with the surgeon tomorrow -- BUT -- I am still undecided if this is the right thing for me because of all the "nay-sayers" (including my family physician who is pushing me to follow a full vegetarian diet). I am worried that if I don't have my family's and personal doctor's support that I will fail and that's really what's making me so unsure. I really think I can follow the diet after surgery (I'm already doing some of the techniques like chewing well, slowing up, and not drinking during meals). In fact, I've lost 4 lbs since I started that. So confused................but I do appreciate all the positive things I've heard on this website! Thanks for sharing and your honesty!!!!

Any Quick, Easy Tastey Tofu Recipes

Hi Becky, I am a vegetarian, mostly vegan and eat tofu and plant based Proteins. One good recipe is a tofu scramble.. its very easy. Make it with firm or extra firm tofu (drain the Water as much as possible) heat in cooking oil spray, ad some soft greens like baby spinach (if you are just on soft foods) or kale. The key spice is tumeric, for flavor and color. Then, for more Protein you can add nutritional yeast: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nutritional_yeast http://www.bulkfoods.com/yeast.htm You can top it with fresh salsa and it will be delicious and with lots of protein. Another easy and quick way to eat tofu is just drain it really well and rub with very little pesto, just to give it the taste, then saute on both sides, serve again with light vegetables. Hope this can help, I will try and send you some pictures of the meals I have prepared with tofu for other ideas. Regards.

    Success Did Not Come Easy....

To answer some of your questions. The weight gain (blah)...yes, it happens. I gained the 40 lbs between 2003 and 2006 and, after a significant breakup, I just needed something else to focus on. I started simple with walking and eating only vegetarian. I didn't join the gym until about 3 years ago but, since then, I am a regular and do not go less than 5 days a week/often 7. I held on to two pair of my favorite post op/weight loss pants and was determined to get back into them...they fit big now. I think the way you can get motivated is to put it into your schedule. It should be as regular as making dinner, going to work, taking a shower..the gym/working out needs to be added to your day schedule. Even if it's just 20 mins walking around your neighborhood! I have managed to avoid a bunch of loose skin and I contribute that to being active and drinking TONS of Water. I don't drink soda anymore and my "soft drink" will either be Crystal Light or iced tea/with Splenda. Also, when I got back to work after two weeks of recovery, I started walking around my office during my 15 minute breaks. Now I'm that crazy workout lady who walks during her lunch too :-) Oh and as far as hydration goes, try coconut water...if you can find it in your area. It's SO good and refreshing, with different flavors like mango and pineapple. I feel extra hydrated when I have coconut water. PS...my dear friend had GB a year after I did. At first she refused to get it done because she was going to do the "cabbage Soup diet"...well, that didn't work...obviously. She is one of the people who wasn't dedicated and has gained a lot of her weight back She had a lot of loose skin, went to Mexico to get it removed and I really think they just took her money and didn't do anything but cut her open and sew her up (swear). Now she's on the "pouch shrinking" diet. What? Yes, that's a real diet and I just let her vent and tell me she doesn't eat that much, etc. But I've seen her snack on sugary things a lot. Hope this helped! Betsie

    Best Decision Ever Made

Congratulations glad you maintain your weight lost. I was also planning on becoming a vegetarian. I wanted to know when does the weight stop coming off?

    Best Decision Ever Made

I am a teacher so I'm hoping for Christmas break. Surgeon said that would most likely work out fine. Fingers crossed! I was a vegetarian for many years. I was raised vegetarian and have gone back to it on occasion as an adult. Now i eat meat, but try to Stick with organic as much as possible. You have inspired me to start to add some stair climbing to my planning period at school. I'm trying to Do a lot now, so I will be able to get moving as quickly as possible after surgery. I was a member of a gym last year, but dropped it because I felt Guilty about picking my son up from pre school and then asking him to the gym nursery. Now I'm trying to do things together. We just got back from a 5.2 mile hike. Feeling excited for surgery! Mile

    Best Decision Ever Made

Hi Snow, My life is unrealistic to MOST, so you're not alone. Believe it or not, Im a corporate professional and have been a single mom for 12 years. Unlike my peers, I don't sit in the lunchroom during lunch but I take a 1.5 mile walk. Also, during my 15 minute brakes, I walk down and back up this hill..which takes no more than ten minutes. I pick up my son from school, get him home, usually have something cooked in the crockpot or made the morning, so I can feed them both quickly (16 and 20) and then I go to the gym. Yes, it's very busy but I enjoy the gym and I won't miss it. I think ANY exercise is good, to be honest. What do I eat? Well, I eat a lot of Protein...eggs, Beans, tofu "based" foods..veggie hot dogs are my favorite. The good thing is that I live in San Diego where we have a lot of vegetarian options in terms of restaurants and markets. Also, I don't eat sugar at all...my body rejects it to this day. Milk is also out of the question although it used to be my favorite beverage (along with COKE)... Have you had surgery yet or getting ready to start the process? Betsie

    Chinese Food

I cannot eat Chinese food from the "hole in the wall " places anymore because the MSG bothers me. I only trust the non-traditional places like Panda Express and I always get sauce on the side. I'm vegetarian anyway so I'm a little safer than most.

    Best Decision Ever Made

LongerCurlz, Thank you for sharing your story. It is great to see you have maintained weight loss for 12 years! I had my decision visit last Friday and now waiting for insurance clearance so I can get my date! I am amazed at your work out schedule. I must admit it seems unrealistic for me... And probably most folks. I am trying to get some walking in before work and then something more strenuous after work... Run, basketball, etc. as a single mom I am constantly balancing my time between work and my son. I'm trying to add a piece for just me, too. For exercise and health. Congrats on your fantastic journey. You look amazing! As a vegetarian, what Proteins do you eat? Beans, tofu?

    Best Decision Ever Made

Hello...I have posted some pictures of before and after. Now that I'm on my laptop, I'm a little more computer literate! Love my Iphone but wow that screen is tiny and I'm blind :-) To answer some of your questions..I work out every day and I never miss the gym. I do a core workout at 4 AM, walk during my lunch on the hills and go to the gym every night. I am also a very careful eater, basically I eat for FUEL. You need to train yourself to eat like that, too. I make sure i get my Protein first thing in the morning because that's when I'm the hungriest. Also, pay attention to dumping syndrome..it's a very real thing and you will not eat garbage again once you experience it. To this day, people say I took the easy way out..how is it easy? I can't eat more than a cup of food, I cannot eat what I want and I've had to change everything about my life because of the surgery. Don't let people discourage you. Take a long, hard look at them..how they eat, how they live and you will see that they're jealous. What do I eat? Well, I am a vegetarian because that just works for me. I gained 40 lbs of my 200 back and I have since lost 60. I contribute my diet and my workouts to my tone body and not having to get surgery to remove skin. I am a size 8 now (was a 30/32 from Lane Bryant) and even lost a shoe size. I am so excited for all of you who are about to get this surgery...truely excited. It's life changing and, although you will still struggle with food decisions, you will feel so good about yourself. Get ready, you will literally melt and that's why exercise is so important. Even if you do about 10 minutes up and down your street every day. I have nightmares that I have been dreaming that I am thin...I have to pinch myself sometimes!

    Having A Hard Time

omelets are a good suggestion, you can put any cheese or veggies you like in them. you can change up the chicken by splitting a breast and stuffing it with ham, cheese and spinach, make stir fry with light sauce and don't eat rice with it. I also like boca burgers. and if you want sausage on the side of an omelet, I happen to love the Morningstar brand meatless sausage (and I'm not a vegetarian, these just have wayyy less fat and 10g Protein per patty and taste really good). As far as free exercising: if weather permits, take a long walk! Take the family with, or the dog, or the ipod... whatever you like. Go to a local park with a trail if you have one, or just start by walking around your block. If you're not used to exercising, start by walking to the corner. Just increase your distance slightly every day. At home, you can do squats (as far down as you can go, it will get easier with practice). You can get weights for a couple bucks a piece at walmart, get some 3lbs and start doing curls and lifting above your arms. Do any of these you can: crunches, leg lifts (lie on your side with legs straight and lift the top one as high as you can, do 3 reps of 10 then switch sides), push ups (start against the wall if you need to, or a table or chair), and jumping jacks. With anything, start small and work your way up. You can also get excellent work out plans on youtube! Good luck!
  19. I lost 200lbs 12 years ago and the best decision I ever made. I workout every day and have been a vegetarian for 5 years. Several of my friends have gained most of their weight back... Don't let that happen. This is no "easy way out" because you MUST change your eating habits or you will get sick. Message me if you want to talk....
  20. Day 2 after surgery was a bit like that for me. Couldn't settle, couldn't lie down, sit up, stand, sleep. Headaches, nausea, general sense of distress that just wouldn't go away. I finally slept (with the help of pain relief meds) for a couple of hours and woke up feeling a little better, since then each day just gets better. I'm now being kind to myself, if I don't progress at the same rate as I think I should, I just try to accept it and adjust to whatever that day brings. I'm pretty much vegetarian at the moment - but I know that meat will re-enter my diet at some point. A friend had similar experience to you in the beginning but is now happy and about 150lb lighter and moving in with his new girlfriend. Hang in there, it does get better. Everyone has put up some great advice here - but take note of Junior Guru's comments re watching your health too so speak to your doctor or nurse. Big hugs and well wishes to you!
  21. I'd love some easy to throw together veg meals ( i do eat most seafood, except lobster) !

    Meatballs?

I had bought some vegetarian meatballs and had them at 4 weeks post-op. They had 13 grams of protien per serving. I could only eat a half serving. They went down fine. My program said to go easy on red meats that some people have a hard time digesting it. Hope I was helpful. Tara

Back - But A Little Late

No, I didn't have a support group or support system. That is a recipe for failure. I now have my Nutritionist, Daughter and Son in Law. I left my husband and left an abusive situation. I feel 100% better and the weight is falling off. My Daughter encourages healthy meals. I remain a vegetarian, but I sneak in fish now and then and maybe some cottage cheese. You have to have support - it is a must!!! There are thinks that happen with a band that no one else understands. Gurgling noises, hiccups, productive burping or even vomiting. I found if I was stressed I ate too fast and it just came back up. Also, I was told by the Nutritionist that stress causes irritation in your stomach. For me, the band is tighter and I am nausea Now instead of eating something soft like cereal and milk, I ride it out. Try to eat a few bites fruit. You have to be good to yourself FIRST. I feel amazing. I am happy again with my band. We are friends again

    Could It Be My Gallbladder?

I had my galbladder removed in January. At times when i was having an attack i thought i was having a heart attack. They were very sudden and sharp and right in the middle of my chest under where i assume my band is. I did an ultrasound for stones (none appeared) and a barium swallow. Both were ok but i knew something was wrong. Very gassy, had to be in the bathroom very suddenly and frequently, and these sporadic chest pains (middle of night/early morning were the worse). I pushed for a HIDA scan and it popped up in the 20's so a lap chole was scheduled in the following weeks My symptoms were def not normal and my NP was reluctant to believe it was my galbladder. Her nurse had had the same symptoms and had her gallbladder out months before so her nurse helped push the HIDA scan. I would push for a HIDA scan (which are long, boring, and uncomfortable btw) and if it comes back normal my next route would be an EGD to rule out erosion. Erosion scares the bejesus out of me too. If left to long it can cause necrosis and that just makes my heart beat all funny just thinking about it. I actually spoke with my NP about this very thing this morning and she said if you catch it early (which usually shows up as irritated tissue ont he EGD) they just unfill and watch the irritation and wait for it to heal on its own. It is when it isnt caught that it turns ugly. Which made me feel a little better but not much Let us know what you find out and i would def push for more tests. You are your best advocate and I KNEW something was not right and wasnt going to give up until someone sorted out. Also, eat as low fat as possible; fatty foods will trigger an attack like nothing i have seen. After i found out it was my gb i ate a lot of rice and Beans. Now I eat as many low fat vegetarian meals as possible because fat wrecks havoc on my digestive system still to this day.
