Hello Everyone! I’m getting ready to start soft foods and I’m worried about getting enough protein in. 2 protein shakes a day is the only reason I even get close but it’s hard to imagine being able to eat enough protein with such small portions. How does everyone manage?

I can gulp water 2 weeks post surgery- normal??
Kerry_girl replied to Kerry_girl's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Thanks for your replies. I had a sleeve on 13/9. I promise I don’t mean to gulp, I just did it instinctively and I could. I then started to worry I could. I have no issue with cold water. Still on protein shakes so not sure if eating will make me feel full, just worried that water seems easy?! -

Starbucks Coffee or Latte's

This is wild to me, I was just in Denver, but I only had a tea a Starbucks. I do live in Corporate's home state so maybe that is why we have more options. Their website does say they have sugar-free white chocolate sauce, which is what OP needs if they want the modified drink to have the same consistency. I did notice the menu of the Starbucks in Denver I was at was very limited, they only had two tea options. Oh and when I say very, very small town I mean 7,000 ppl. -

Starbucks Coffee or Latte's
LindsayT replied to MegProctor84's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I started drinking caffeine again around 2 months...once I established good eating and drinking routines (making protein and fluid goals). I spoke with my nutritionist about it and he said not to count the caffeine beverages towards my overall fluid goal. -
Starbucks Coffee or Latte's

I live in Denver, and we have a Starbucks on nearly every corner, and none of them offer any sugar free options except vanilla. I love Jordan's Skinny Syrups. They have white chocolate mocha syrup that's no calories, no sugar, no carbs and it's AMAZING. I love all their flavors. I was told no caffeine because it dehydrates you, and we have to be very mindful of our hydration. Especially if we deal with constipation. But if I find I REALLY need the pick-me-up, I get it from tea or from Arbonne natural caffeine energy powders (absolutely LOVE them). -

I don't know how many Starbucks there are where you live, but have you asked about sugar-free options at other locations? Because where I live (a very very small town, with 4 Starbucks, and 3 more in the town less than a mile away) They have all sorts of sugar-free options, I get sugar-free Irish cream syrup, but one location where I live does not offer it. I know for sure one location has sugar-free white chocolate sauce. -
How long from first doctor visit to surgery?
firesafety replied to KD in CT's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
they tell me about 4 months - insurance requirement. I do not have a surgery date as of yet but sometime in November. Have health issues is the main reason for the gastric sleeve. so far I have had a psych evaluation, 2 dietitians visits - useless in my mind. a endoscopy because of a hernia surgery 18 years ago, had to see the cardiologist because of the heart bypass I had 7 years ago, EKG and stress test just for his clearance. have 1 more appointment with my nephrologist because he will not clear me until there is a surgery date due to the fact, he doesn't like the fact I am cutting carbs and eating too much protein. I understand that because of the fact that I have stage 3 kidney Dease with only 1 kidney working. So, more labs a chat before he clears me. have to visit my endocrinologist because of my diabetes, have to make a plan to resolve the insulin resistance before surgery and then right after to check how my medications will need to be adjusted. Have to point out that all these doctors insist that surgery is no longer a choice but more of what is needed. my family also insist that I have surgery. Am hesitant about it to be totally honest. I feel that I do not overeat and have been on sugar free diet for 15 years now. But have tried and failed too many times on various diets never losing more that 15 lbs before hitting some kind of plateau and stall for weeks. So frustrating. I am going forward to have the sleeve. will post my progress as I know more. -

Bloodwork showed type 2 diabetes

I'm trying to get a referral to cardiac rehab. In the meantime, the hospital offers supervised exercise in their gym, and I'm going to give that a try and see if that's enough help. Between pain issues and de-conditioning and conditions that cause post-exertional malaise, just striking out on my own right now isn't really an option. -

The only sugar-free syrup product Starbuck has is the vanilla. They have several herbal teas that are nice. I enjoy the peach tranquility. I have also started drinking caffeine and also enjoy an iced green tea. I wish they'd offer more sugar-free options. It's hard not falling back into the coffeehouse coffee habit. -
Bloodwork showed type 2 diabetes

This part here is where I struggle and where I have always struggled with diets. I can't stand sugar substitutes. And now, if I want to enjoy many of my favorite foods, I have to deal with them. And while I don't eat a lot of bread or potatoes, I do enjoy pasta- and veggie curls are not the same. I'm sensitive to texture and smell, and a lot of the substitute-oriented foods, whether it's protein drinks with artificial sweeteners or cauliflower pizza crust, are just texturally different than the real deal. How is your blood sugar now that you've had the surgery? Are you still considered diabetic? I usually go through 4 18 oz bottles of water a day as well as 2-4 12 oz glasses, so at least my water intake is good. I've eliminated coffee except for an occasional treat because I have tachycardia, and coffee just makes it worse. As a general rule, I'd rather eat my calories than drink them. I've started keeping a food log, and I'm trying to keep to under a certain amount of calories a day- about 300 less than I was eating when I first started keeping the log. I know I've got a long way to go; I just was hoping that what I was doing would be enough to allow things to go more slowly. I'm at the very beginning of this process; I have to do six months of a medically supervised diet and lose 30 lbs to qualify for the surgery. -
Bloodwork showed type 2 diabetes
SleeveToBypass2023 replied to Theia103121's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
I actually had diabetes when I started the process. My A1c was around 7.6 or so and my glucose levels were usually around the 160-170 rang when I would test. I was on 3 diabetes meds, a cholesterol med, a blood pressure med, 2 anti-inflammatory meds. Not only did having diabetes not delay things, having comorbidities actually helped speed up the approval process for me. I know you wanted gradual changes to your eating, and to a certain extent you can still have that. But it's important to start getting your mindset and habits changed at least a little before surgery. Once you have it, you have to make drastic changes pretty fast. Better to start now. I would start by eliminating soda and anything carbonated. Get caffeine from coffee (the kind you can make at home) using sugar free sweeteners and low/no calorie creamers (or almond milk) and tea (personally, I prefer tea). Swap out regular chocolate, candy, popsicles, pudding, etc to the sugar free kinds. Start lowering your carb intake and try cutting down on pasta, bread, potatoes, etc... There's keto versions of bread that taste fantastic. Look at the way the bariatric diets require you to eat (protein first, then veggies, then carbs) and try to plan your meals around that (protein helps you feel full longer). Practice getting in at least 64oz of water now so you can be used to drinking it a lot. You can still eat yummy foods, just change the way you do it. It's less jarring if you start the process now. -
Unable to get enough fluids or protein 5 weeks post-op
CarolineLittle replied to Jlw1403's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
I didn't hit protein goals until about 10 weeks probably. It's very hard in those early days and I just gave myself the grace knowing I'd get there. It was hard because of the small amounts your stomach could handle and it got so much easier once I settled into a good routine and started being able to eat more per meal. The biggest way I get huge amounts of protein daily is through yoghurt, buy high protein ones and add protein powder. I have a Ninja Creami and make frozen yoghurt that gives me heaps of protein. My current fave flavour is Malted Milk and a serve is 28 grams of protein. My biggest suggestion is to really plan your days out and start eating as soon as you can otherwise time can get away from you. Focus on high protein foods, meats, dairy, legumes, low carb wraps are great. I have a wrap with cheese and salsa every day, it's about 15 grams of protein and delicious with a quick stint in the microwave. I'm not great with fluids myself. It will get easier, be kind to yourself and just try to do your best each day. I'm down 72 pounds so my early struggles did not affect my progress. This is a marathon not a sprint. -
Gastric sleeve pre op must haves
summerseeker replied to DanielleQ's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
You need patience, Getting to grips with the major diet changes either pre op or for about 6 weeks post op, you need patience and perseverance. Neither are easy. We have never had to eat in this way before. Everything has rules to be obeyed. Nobody has the same rules as you. You will need a lip balm and if you can get it biotin dry mouth spray. I always have wet wipes in my bag and I did use these Spare underwear If you are having a long car journey after surgery, a pillow is great to put on your stomach as it stops the seat belt from squishing you. I really regretted getting rid of my recliner chair as I had to sleep sitting up in bed for a month. I had nasty reflux. Some people buy in protein drinks but do not buy too many of the same one because our tastes change after surgery. I made broths and froze them. You will be asleep or be walking in the hospital. You will need nothing for that. Read up about Stalls -
3 weeks Post~Op Body Rejecting Protein Drinks
summerseeker replied to Chel1's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
Have your team ruled out a stricture ? Any time that liquids are being vomited back up, alarm bells should ring. It is a easy fix I believe. Lots of us have issues with nausea and not wanting to eat foods and drinks that were our go to ones before surgery. I didn't do Protein drinks but have read on here that there are ones with sugar substitutes that really give people problems. My husband is diabetic so we have lots of sugar substitutes and every one of them make me vomit. I use real sugars if I need any. Lots of us find we are intolerant of dairy, nuts etc. Our new stomachs are really fussy. I also had a filthy taste in my mouth from the ketones for months. I still take Lansoprazole 30mg twice a day and when I need it Gaviscon I could not face the puree stage, just thinking about the texture made me heave so I missed that stage all together and stayed on homemade soups, yogurts, cream cheese, pate until I could go on to foods that were squashed with a fork. One tip that I was given was to have my drinks warm. My stomach accepted them better. I never drink plain water, I have never liked it. I add a little fruit juice or add Bovril or Oxo stock cubes. -
My Documented Weight Pre & Post Op

Thought to post my stats as I’ve been tracking my weight and on some what was going on with my body at that time. IDK about any of my female Pals but since pre op diet my cycles started to get regular. I am thinking due to the increase of protein and vitamins with iron. I missed a couple days weighing in because I wasn’t feeling well. I only did daily because I wanted to see how my body did with getting all that extra fluid and swelling out. Here Goes: Weight 200 on 8/22 pre surgery 194.88 on 8/29 doc Office 205 - 1st morning after home from hospital 8/30 (swelling & fluid) 202 lbs after surgery Friday 9/1 200.8 - Saturday 9/2 197.8 -Sunday 9/3 196.4 - Monday 9/4 195.6 - Tues 9/5 193.6 - Weds 9/6 192.4 - Thurs 9/7 191.8 - Friday 9/8 192.4 - Sunday 9/10 190.0 - Monday 9/11 189.6 - Tuesday 9/12 189.4 Weds 9/13 190.6 Saturday 9/16 187.2 Sunday 9/17 189.4 Mon 9/18 started cycle yesterday 187.8 Weds 9/20 heavy cycle 186.8 Thurs 9/21 185.2 Fri 9/22 -
3 weeks Post~Op Body Rejecting Protein Drinks
Chel1 posted a topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
After a sip of my protein drink - enough to just swallow my stomach meds it felt like something was stuck after a few dreadful minutes it had to come up. This had happened for a few days even sipping fluids . Doc put me on a new nausea Med Thursday and took me off protein drinks. Yesterday (Friday) I was able to hold down sipping 20 oz flav enhanced water. Tried to eat purée last night a little and it sat until it had to come out . Going to stick with trying to focus on fluids as doc stated if I can’t get enough fluids I’ll have to go to ER for an IV. I was fine until into week 3 1/2 - 4. Anyone have this issue or things you were ok with first 2-3 weeks then your body rejected? Also after sleeve surgery in 2017 I was never able to drink plain water again. -
Hey all. I'm about 4.5 months out from being sleeved at 50 (now 51)and doing really well. I'm down 32.7 kilograms (72 pounds). My BMI is down from 67 to just under 53 and I've lost 21% of my total weight. I'm tolerating all foods fine although rice does sit a bit h3avy. I rarely have it so not a big deal. Hitting protein goals with ease, need to be better with fluids. I can't wait to see where this journey continues to take me!

Unflavored protein powder
BlondePatriotInCDA replied to MsTeeTee's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
I personally would check out BulkSupplements.com. I've been using their non flavored whey protein isolate, calcium and a few others. Its the easiest absorbed and metabolized at a reasonable price. It was recommended to me by a few professional body builders I know personally. It truly has no flavor, I put it in several of my meals each day. Plus, the company promotes the following which I appreciate (hope this helps also if you subscribe you save although you don't have to): Pure Raw Ingredients No Additives. No flavorings. No Fillers. Just pure, bulk powders FDA Inspected Facility cGMP, FDA registered, regularly inspected manufacturing facility Lab Tested for Purity Each supplement is tested by a 3rd party laboratory Transparency COAs are available for all of their products upon request -
Your experience with NYU Langone?
catwoman7 replied to Gothikarose's topic in Weight Loss Surgeons & Hospitals
I didn't go to them, but the only six-month diet requirements I've heard of are the insurance company's requirements, not the surgeon's. Of course, there may be some surgeons that require it, but the only ones I've heard about are because of the insurance company. A lot of surgeons (although not all) do require a special two-week diet before the surgery, though (usually just fluids and protein shakes - or some let you have one small meal as well) -
Will you always have *that feeling* while eating?
Penguin733 posted a topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Hello all, I'm near 7 weeks post-op and I was wondering if the feeling in the stomach while eating will forever be present? Sorry if that's vague, but since being let loose with no restrictions I am being consciousness to not take big bites, chewing/eating slowly, and that I need to reintroduce foods, but when I eat I still get a feeling in my stomach like when you eat with an empty stomach and it clunks, something different from feeling full. It's honestly putting me off from eating from time to time and was wondering if there's an end to where I can just eat normally and feel full? As with things I've been already familiarized myself with during recovery (popsicles, steamed veggies, and protein shakes) seem to be not an issue.
