    Super Bummed

I had a revision October 29th last year and started at 185. The first month I lost just about 8 pounds, since it took a week and a half to loose the 10 pounds I gained in the hospital. After that, I started to see a steady drop, but like catwoman7, revision weight loss is definitely slower than the original sleeve. Don't be discouraged, it will level out and the weight will drop. As someone on social media posted - "weight loss surgery is all about making better decisions" - about what we eat, how we exercise and how we view our health!

weight loss after revision is almost always slower than it is after a "virgin" surgery, and on top of that, you're starting off at a much lower weight than most of us, which also means slow weight loss. And...you're about three weeks out. Just in time for the infamous "three week stall" to boot.

    65 yr olds with bypass

I'm 68 and had revision from a 1984 surgery, VBG, to R&Y on February 15th this year. I've lost 55 pounds. Food doesn't taste right but many say that will improve with time. Right now it helps with the weight loss because I only eat for nourishment. I've had no complications other than food tasting different but that's pretty much par for the course.

I'm sorry to hear you're struggling. I had THE SAME issue with water. Found that I love Fiji water. Its expensive but it tastes like something. I was told with the revision (coming up TUESDAY) loss would be slower than the first time around. Kind of like... our body is onto us. Try sugar free Popsicles and jello to get more liquids in. You got this!
  5. I had band to sleeve revision 9 months ago with Go Light Bariatric. Love them and I’m down from 212 to 137.
  6. I had my revision surgery on 2/24. My weight was 181. Since then I am only at 173 (it bounces a couple of pounds). It has not moved (mostly) since 3/5. Getting water in is brutal. The taste is awful to me and no matter what I try it just doesn't work. I've started going on walks (when the weather permits) and also hop on the exercise bike when I can. I am hitting protein goals. I keep going back and forth between saying "it's just a stall" and "that's it - you did this for a measly 8 pounds". My original surgery was the sleeve and I was always stalling. I am just a little down in the dumps and needed to vent.
  7. I joined this forum in 2012, but wasn't really active. One friend who I connected with on here and she vanished, so I just never really came back. I just had a revision from sleeve that was done Nov. 2012, to bypass on Tuesday. I had some GERD, but not severe, but full weight gain. I also was 30 pounds from goal weight at my lowest. I knew the sleeve wouldn't work for me, because it's not about how much I eat, but what I eat when I feel like eating. You guys, this is HARD. Before sleeve, I didn't eat much, even less after. Now, I'm freaking dying to eat. Really, I just want coffee with my creamer and I'll be good. I've always said, I could drink coffee all day and be fine. I can't get comfortable. I handle surgery really well, like shopping the day after hysterectomy, appendectomy, etc, but this?! I'm still on pain meds & anti nausea. I could really use some encouragement, cuz I'm miserable. I need to know there's light even in a week. I'm really struggling. For those who have done this, any words of encouragement?
  8. For anyone who hates when someone is feeling down on themselves, then leave this post now lol. I don't have anyone who I can discuss this with in my everyday life, so I'm talking about it here. But I'm just feeling so defeated. I went ahead and made an appointment with my original surgeon to talk to him about revision from band to sleeve. My band has some sort of leak or disconnection in it and will no longer hold fluid. It's useless. Now, him doing the surgery is not the problem, I'm sure he'll do it. The problem is money. I work for the state of SC but they don't cover anything bariatric (BCBS Peba). I've applied to 4 or 5 different loan companies to see what rates they'd give me for loans and the first two said they'd give me a loan, but they won't give me the amount I need to cover the procedure. Then Care Credit and Prosper gave me a flat-out "no". I'm now in the headspace where I feel like calling up my doctor's office and saying forget it and I shouldn't even bother taking the trip to see him if I can't even finance the surgery. This just sucks. I feel like I've hit a wall and it's so disheartening because up until now I have been feeling so positive about taking the steps to get revised and now it seems like even though I want this so badly that it's not going to happen. If anyone else has had issues with finding financing but found a solution, please let me know.
  9. Why did you have to have the revision? I hope it helps you feel better.

    Revision

Good luck to all fixing to have surgery!!! That’s awesome! And the ones who have had the revision already I would love to hear how things are going! You don’t hear much from people on revisions and how they are doing!

    Revision

Hi! I am in your same boat. My original bypass was 11 years ago, and I am having a revision on Tuesday. It is a much more risky surgery because less is known about modifying a previous bypass. My doc is making a smaller stomach pouch and POSSIBLY distallizing (moving the anastamosis between stomach and intestine) further down the line. He tells me that after this process I will likely lose 10-20% of the excess weight. We shall see! Surgery 11am Tuesday. I should add that I see a bariatric team and they are very particular about candidates for revision; I'm not sure I would trust a surgeon who is not specifically doing WLS to make a revision recommendation. The science/data is just not out there yet. So! Good luck! See a doc who knows what they're doing! Let me know if you have questions - I'm happy to update along the way.
  12. Hi I had gastric bypass 16 years ago and the last few years I started to regain my weight back . I am 5’9 with 275 pounds now🥲 Going for a revision on the 22 but I have no idea if I can do it again or if there is something else the doctor can to help me loose the weight again. gastric by pass to another gastric bypass is possible? Anyone here did that?

    Revision

@Tina Leo I am having a revision on March 16 also. I had lap-band then removal 6 years later. Sleeve 2 years ago and now to DS due to Bile reflux, GERD, gastritis and need hernia repair and adhesions removed. I am so nervous! I hope your hanging in there, the count down is on for us. 😁
  14. I am a little over 4 months out from my revision and close to goal. At first I was scared that the revision wasn't going to work because it didn't feel like I had the same restrictions as I did with the sleeve and I am able to eat things I couldn't with the sleeve> With the sleeve I felt more restriction but as I heal more I feel it more and things have been moving along great and I am pleased with my weight loss. It is slower as I am so close to goal (only about 4 more to go) and I had my revision per reflux. So happy to have the reflux and GERD cured and am having no problems whatsoever in that area. I am happy with my revision and growing to love it more every day! I still walk 30 minutes and log my food daily. I focus on maintaining water and protein levels as I notice this is what makes the scale move for me! Good luck! You are going to do great!
  15. I've had a very uneventful post surgery. I actually wondered for a while if I had even had the revision LOL. The hospital stay was not much fun. I woke up with an extremely dry mouth. Get some Dry Mouth Spray to take to the hospital with you. I have had no reflux, acid, Gerd, etc.. I wish I had done this a long long time ago. Follow me or ask me anything anytime. I hope yours goes as well as mine. Oh by the way. I had this surgery in Birmingham. I live in Gulf Shores, AL We drove up, spent the night Monday night. I was in the hospital on Tuesday night , drove home Wednesday and I went back to work on Thursday. I work from home but still no down time. Best thing is no hunger! It is really amazing!
  16. @Tim C Thank you for your reply! This made me so glad to read! I know you just had the surgery, but do you have any issues with heartburn or anything so far? My only worry about getting the revision from band to sleeve are all the people I see here who are getting their sleeve revised to something else because of GERD, hernia, etc.
  17. I just had this surgery on 2/23. I absolutely hated the band and should have done this years ago. I could not get any salava to go down with minimum restriction. I finally just gave up. I had the sleeve approved and could not be happier about it. The surgeon that put the band in did the revision. I have had no pain and no hunger since leaving the hospital. I wish I had done this 10 years ago. Good luck to you. You have made a good decision.
  18. I finally bit the bullet and called up my doctor's office down in Florida who placed my lap band back in 2013, and I made a consultation for the 23rd to speak to him about a revision to a sleeve. I'm very excited to finally get the ball rolling on this and see if this will be a sure thing. I was hoping to not have to travel back to FL for a revision, but it seems this is really the best way to go since this doctor did my first surgery and his prices are reasonable so far (I am self pay). Anything I should prepare for before this consult? Any general band to sleeve revision advice?
  19. I had gotten a fleur de lis tummy tuck on January 5th of this year, lucky my insurance covers it fully along with the breast lift and thigh lift I will be needing later in the months. I would highly suggest checking with your insurance and plastic surgeons who work with those to save you some cash then if you want to have scar revisions or smaller ones it will be much much cheaper.

    Caloric intake

For me the first 6 weeks after both my VSG (12/2019) and revision (8/2020) the focus was on protein/water and slowly reintroducing foods. After 6 weeks my calorie goals were 6-900 calories a day and a minimum of 60g of protein. Now that I’m at goal it’s 1000-1200 a day and a minimum of 90g of protein.
  21. I developed another hiatal hernia 3 months post VSG (had one repaired with my VSG. I then developed GERD, esophagitis, and hiccups. It was to the point that I was suffering with my work and sleeping. The picture is from my Upper GI. The stricture from the hernia was so bad my surgeon faxed over approval paperwork the day he called me with the results. I ended up having to appeal it over the phone while hiccuping the entire call with the insurance company but ended up having revision with hernia repair surgery 3 weeks after my phone call to insurance at 8 months post VSG. And technically while they remove most of the fundus you still have one even after VSG because it’s upper most part of the stomach connected to the esophagus farthest from the pyloric valve. Outpouching might be the beginnings of a hernia and coupled with the GERD might be what’s making the hiccups so bad.
  22. My sleeve surgery I’d have been ready by week 3 but had hardware removed from my knee during the same leave period so went back after 9 weeks. When I had my revision surgery it took a full 6 weeks before I felt better but my hemoglobin was really low after surgery causing me to be anemic. I went back to work 2 weeks after that. I had an internal hernia repair in November and was back to work after 2 weeks. Then in December I was hospitalized for 2 weeks (12/18-12/31) with a small bowel ischemia that required a resection. I didn’t go back to work until 2/16. Every person and every surgery is different but it’s totally possible to go back to work later in the week or the next week.

5 1/2 Years Post Op Observations

Yes. Thank you. I'm having a revision from band to sleeve and I agree about the part who you tell. The judgement is real from certain people, and not always who you think it will be from. And when I put on the weight again after my band didn't work for me anymore, it was heartbreaking to me--I was grateful for my privacy.
  24. I'm 9 months out from VSG, saw the bariatric clinic follow up staff, and am so GRR now. I never had that "I'm never hungry" feeling once I recovered from the surgery but shrugged it off. I could drink 2 oz. fluids at once literally the day of surgery so I was like... OK, cool. Weight loss was slow despite being diet compliant and exercising, stopped at 25 pounds after 3 months, then gained 10 back after a foot injury (off again since getting back to my daily 5k jog). I've been having reflux for ages despite avoiding trigger foods/drinks and I get hiccups 20+ times a day regardless of how I'm eating, drinking, or not doing either. So they referred me back to the surgeon's office. Last week I had an upper GI study. The radiology report says I have mild decreased lower esophageal motility and mild outpouching at the fundus... um, I shouldn't HAVE a fundus after gastric sleeve. The weakened esophageal muscles explains the fluid that backs up when I drink sometimes, especially if not sitting straight up or standing, and the chest lock I feel when eating dryer foods or meats. I'm confused about the fundus. Is the radiologist mistaken and unfamiliar with VSG anatomy? Did the surgeon leave part of my fundus? The surgeon's office is awful at communicating so I'm in limbo. They didn't even call me before ordering the upper GI, they just had the radiology department call to schedule me without notice. All I can think about is where I go from here. Meds for the reflux and live with the hiccups? Revision surgery for the reflux and basically start over (the big GRR)? Anyone else have anything similar like a retained fundus, outpouching, or GERD with esophageal motility disorders like weakened muscles after VSG surgery?
  25. I have a band and struggle with potatoes--they become like glue and get stuck. (Not that I should be eating it) A McDonald's hashbrowns or french fries will be painful for me. Also eating bread could sometimes be a problem for me, sometimes not. I don't do well with reheated chicken or shrimp--they become tough and hard to chew small enough. I never touch celery with strings, and once a piece of raw broccoli sent me to the ER, so CHEW CHEW CHEW!!! I lost 95 lbs with my band. I felt incredible! Then they unfilled me when I got pregnant, and I never was able to get back to my sweet spot. Gained all back plus due to bad habits, slider foods, sugar addiction, stress, and then lockdown boredom eating. I too am getting a revision to VGS in 3 weeks.
