After my surgery, I was getting in better shape (from both weight loss and increased exercise) and my resting heart rate steadily decreased. By about a year post-op, my resting heart rate was 38 beats per minute and I was experiencing fatigue, weakness, and edema in my legs. My surgeon said this can happen because of rapid weight loss and referred me to a cardiologist, who diagnosed me with sinus bradycardia. The cardiologist said that some people can live with bradycardia without having symptoms, in which case, it's not really a concern, but since I was having symptoms that affected me pretty severely, I had to get a pacemaker.

My Weight Loss Journey: From 150 kg to 64 kg, and Now Back to 94 kg - Seeking Support and Advice
Just G replied to Seif_s88's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
I am almost 15 years out of bypass. I started at 275 and I loss down to a 168. I have gained 70 pounds. It took years but it creeped back up. I was proud of my size when I was at my smallest but I felt like crap and I was sick. Between anemia (a result of the bypass) and poor MENTAL health, I found that I was better at a BMI that said I was overweight. I never liked my body as I was never "perfect". I think it was because I was not happy in my day to day life. That meant I couldn't be happy with me. I divorced and spiraled for a while. I fell into the bat eating habits and didn't want to exercise. I think the mental should have taken precedence over the physical and I probably could have maintained it. I am at a place where I like ME and I can focus on my weight without it being about finding OTHERS acceptance. I only want to lose 50. But, I am focusing on strength training. Some days I struggle but over all I feel great. I am starting the walking/1300 calorie counting. Strength training and therapy are also part of that. I know how to lose weight and I will again. But, more importantly, I know how to process my emotions and I pray I don't turn to food. -
Some people who knew me before my weight loss have told me I look younger now, and I routinely get surprised reactions when I share my age with people who didn’t know me before. So I think alls well in my case at least! I do have a skincare routine though 😁

If you are often doing anything aerobic such as walking, running, sex, sports, and/or any number of other things, ones' heart learns to pump more blood so it doesn't need to beat as often. When I was binge running, my resting pulse went to 38-40. Generally this won't cause dizziness because the heart is just more efficient and can do the same job with fewer beats. If you are taking blood pressure or some other meds they may cause dizziness. Especially during the weight loss phase, meds were dosed for a larger body. Losing weight effectively makes some meds stronger. Get your Doc to (re)evaluate your meds and supplements. I had to have BP meds reduced 2 times before they ultimately got rid of them. I would say it's also a wise choice to see a doctor, even a heart doctor. Whenever I've been normal sized, even as a child, I've had Orthostatic hypotension (dizziness when standing). It was never bad nor really any concern until about 7 years after my WLS while at work, I jumped up very quickly and took a bit of a nap. Since it was in front of the CEO, he insisted I have it seen to immediately. So I got a nice ride in an ambulance and after some poking and prodding, a nice, cozy room. I had several tests, and apparently scored well since I won a brand new pacemaker! I never win anything, so it was pretty cool. Good luck, Tek

Echoing the "reset isn't real", and definitely co-signing on the calories. Here's a link to calorie calculators for loss and maintenance - pop in your stats and it gives you calorie guides. Super easy. Weight loss absolutely slows to a crawl as you reach goal, but staying in a deficit works, even if it's slow. I also wanted a "buffer" for the 3-year gain-back scenario, and I'm now ten kilos past my goal, which was what I was after. This whole process is just ongoing calorie adjustment and patience.

Yes I'm sleeping so much Lindsay. And I feel pretty weak. I still have nausea every day. My post op appt was today and I just couldn't go so thankfully we did it by phone. He's ordered blood work for me as my nausea at this stage is abnormal and wants to see if somethings going on. He's also sent me scripts for 2 new meds. He says my fatigue is due in part to rapid weight loss. I've lost 11kgs or 24.2pds in 2 weeks which he was surprised to hear. I'm to to stop my vitamins for 2 weeks to see if that helps. The nausea was so bad this morning I threw up. I'm really thirsty which is good as drinking then doesn't feel like a chore. My 18yo asked me this morning if this was expected to be feeling like I am? Heck no lol. I anticipated a lot but not 2 weeks of nausea and to be repulsed by many foods. -
Most of us experience some pain as our joints, muscles, tendons, centre of gravity, etc. relearn how to stand (better posture) & move without our carrying our excess weight. And it sometimes doesn’t start straight away. For example, I was slouching a lot & had to consciously not & sit upright. I also had upper back pain because my bras were too big. Bought new bras & my back pain went. Forty pounds is a good amount of weight to lose (congratulations). Had you started to become more active with the weight loss? If so, using your muscles, etc. more may have contributed. A chiropractor, physiotherapist, acupuncturist or massage therapist may help. I did an acupuncture session to release the tight muscles in my back which helped until I got my new underwear. Don’t give up.

Congratulations on your weight loss. Whoo hoo! Unfortunately, there’s no such thing as a pouch reset. It’s just a myth. You can’t regain those surgery honeymoon period bonuses like reduced hunger or appetite. Remember your smaller tummy is still there which is a big positive. It just comes down to how you use it. If you seem to have stabilised at your new current weight, it’s possible this is your new set point (a gift of the surgery). This is the weight your body is happiest at & is easiest to maintain. Our old much higher set point is one of the reasons we would regain any weight we’d lose so easily in the past. Remember not everyone reaches the goal weight they have set for themselves & that’s okay. To lose more weight you need to reduce your calorie intake. Though to maintain the lower weight you will also need to continue use to eat less than what you do now. For example my BMR at my weight, age, height & activity level is about 1500 calories. If I weighed 10kg more at 60kg my calorie needs would be about 1700 calories to maintain. Is a lower calorie intake sustainable in the long term? This is something only you can answer knowing your lifestyle & how you want to live your life. Also you can’t exercise the extra weight away. Exercise only accounts for about 10% of the weight you want to lose. Want to lose 10lbs? Exercising accounts for about 1lb. Not everyone experiences the 2nd/3rd year bounce back regain (usually 10-20lbs). I didn’t. Some of the regain is your body settling at a slightly higher weight with your set point. Some of it is because how you were eating (calories, activity level, eating style) wasn’t sustainable. Some of it is because of lifestyle choices. And yes some of it is from becoming complacent, less vigilant or falling back into old habits. Some of the regain you have control over. Some you don’t. When I reached my current weight, I too thought I’d have bounce back regain wriggle room & it would be okay if I ended up at or around my goal. At 4 years I’m a about 1-2lbs (depending upon the day lol!) more than at where my weight first settled.

Bad habits before and after WLS
omrhsn replied to omrhsn's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
Addiction is the right word to use in my case haha. Now that the weight loss has slowed down considerably, I need some sort of motivation / rewards to keep me going. That is where new clothes come in. I now dare myself to try new sizes and styles that I've never dreamed of wearing before WLS to see how it fits. Yesterday I tried size S polo shirts, size 32" slim fit jeans, size S slim fit dress shirt and all fit me nicely. I ended buying all. My wardrobe is full of cloth now and I need to stop. As for insecurities, I'm really insecure about how my thighs look. I seem to have lost weight (a lot) from everywhere but my thighs. I need to do something about that for sure. I hope the weather improves soon so I can go back to cycling again. -

Glad you are feeling so well so fast! The liquid diet was the hardest, hopefully you can move to more interesting food soon. The time does go faster than I expected though. Great job on the weight loss! -
I know that various joint pains are fairly common, after weight loss. When my back hurts, I go to the chiropractor.

Wow, you are doing amazing!! Thank you for sharing how you are doing. I keep wondering how our group is progressing. You look wonderful and sounds like you are on a great track. My progress has slowed down sooo much. I even adjusted my goal to just hit normal weight so that it would look closer and help my brain mentality. I am really close but I sat at the same weight for almost 2 months and just last week had a nice 5 lb loss all at once. So I'm guessing it was the breaking of the stall at last, But these last 10 lbs and hopefully more might take me another year at the rate I'm going. My restriction is still the same, which was never very restricted to begin with. I'm still not super hungry yet which I'm happy about. My hair loss is slowing and I have baby hairs sprouting up in curls which looks weird but I'm happy to have them. I need to get back into the positive mindset because these last few month of no loss or very little loss has been depressing and I need to start appreciating all the good changes. Thank you for updating though and I hope more people come back and update too -
The best advice I can give it to determine your BMR. This is the calories you need to sustain your current weight and conditions. There are calculators online to help you determine your BMR. From there I would log everything you eat, drink, take for a day or two to see if your calorie intake is above your BMR if so, cut back. There are also calculators that tell you your BMR and what calories you should be consuming for a specific weight loss per week. I think a lot of people regain weight or have trouble losing that last 10 pounds because they get comfortable and start grazing. Portions trend up a bit and before you know it, you gain back a little. So, rather than trying a reset, liquid diet, any kind of diet, Id work on getting control of calories in or increasing exercise. Good luck!

Gastric Sleeve to SADI-S
NovaLuna replied to rlmontgomery1's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
Not sure what to say about how to get your insurance to cover a revision, but if you're having reflux problems then maybe have Bypass instead. I had the Sadi-S myself, and have lucked out that my EOE didn't cause the acid issues to get worse (I have acid issues at night due to EOE a.k.a Eosinophilic Esophagitis). If you do get the Sadi-S here's some advice... 1. don't go too long without something in your stomach even if it's applesauce or fruit, etc. because if I wait to long inbetween eating my bowels decide to empty everything in them. (TMI, but you should know so you can avoid it happening to you) 2. Always take a probiotic every day because it helps with keeping you regular 3. I don't know if it's a common thing for Sadi-S or other surgeries or if it's just me... but I haven't been able to throw up since my surgery... 3 years ago (and yes, I've been sick and dry heaved for hours, but couldn't throw up). 4. having any WLS with a malabsorption factor gives you a 3% chance of developing a wheat allergy or Celiac's (I got the wheat allergy because my luck is ****). And, 5. I don't know if it's just a DS or Sadi-S thing, but there is a chance after surgery that you will vomit old blood (if this counts as vomiting then this is the only time I've thrown up since surgery. It happened three or four times while I was in the hospital after surgery. They didn't warn me and it scared the **** out of me). Anyway, yeah... I'm happy with my surgery choice, but if I'd had another chance I think I'd have gone for the original DS since it has slightly better weight loss results. I had the normal gain back you get going into your third year and straddle between 188-193 which I've been for 9 months. Also, any time you have surgery, ANY surgery, you risk the chance of health problems popping up that you would have got a little later in life. I developed Mast Cell Activation Syndrome after my WLS and it's been a b***h to deal with. I mean, technically the doctor told me she thinks I probably already had the beginnings of it before the surgery and the surgery itself just... made it progress to a more severe case (apparently they noticed a trend in people with EOE developing MCAS so it was pretty much going to happen anyway). But still. Health issues can pop up after surgery. So just be aware of it. Hopefully everything goes well for you and sorry for the word vomit. -
Congratulations! How did your weight loss progress? I hope it was smooth for you! I bet you’re so much more comfortable now and happy 😊

Hi, I got my date for vsg last week, July 31st. Completed all my pre-op requirements and got insurance approval, just waiting for my appointment in mid-July to see what my pre-surgery diet will be. I'm excited but also nervous. I've gone back and forth on the surgery vs. trying those new weight loss drugs but i really feel that the vsg is the best long term solution for hopefully getting the weight off and keeping it off. Looking forward to stopping the dieting merry-go-round I've been on for 30 years. I've told my Mom and one friend at work and both have been supportive. Don't think I'll really be sharing it with anyone else. I've been getting support and some really good information on the /gastricsleeve reddit (i'm a Reddit junkie) and watching youtube videos of other people's journey's.

hw 410 sw 355 cw 228 gw 185 may update time! i just got back from a month and a half long trip to peru (iykyk)! first off - i fit in the plane seats! i lost about 30 lbs while i was in peru and i feel amazing. my hair has seemed to have finally stopped falling out and i’ve got tons of inch-long whispies of new hair growth coming back in. food-wise, my stomach-pouch has DEFINITELY started letting me feel my restriction. i read somewhere that it might take six months for nerve endings to grow back in the tummy pouch and man i can really feel it. i can probably eat around 1/2 to 3/4 cups of food at a time and i have a very obvious cutoff. i have to be more careful with my hydration intake now, too. until recently, i haven’t really needed to wait very long after eating to resume drinking water, but now i have to wait 15ish minutes or i get nauseous or throw up. i just started going back to the gym after being gone for a month and a half. i think i lost quite a bit of muscle while i was on vacation, but i’m working on building my strength back up. :) i have a very active home life; i have a farm with a dozen goats, and two dozen chickens, and four herding dogs, and a large vegetable garden to manage, and fields to till and seed. it’s been busy! i feel great and feel like all my hard work is paying off. :) i’m currently a size 14 / large, and i own zero clothes that fit. yesterday, i sorted through all my clothes that don’t fit and they’re in the wash right now so i can donate them to a secondhand store. i hope you guys are doing well! i really felt tons different once i passed the six-months post-op mark, and i’m curious if that’s been your experiences as well. :) -
In my case, because I had probably PCOS that was already thinning my hair, not only did it all grow back, it grew back THICKER. Make sure you're keeping yourself nourished and your hair will come back in a few months.

HELP! I itch everywhere
pintsizedmallrat replied to LindsayT's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I felt like my skin got itchy after my weight loss kicked back into gear, it almost makes me wonder if the process of my skin retracting makes it itch. -
Hang in there and keep your eye on the long term prize! I am feeling your pain and currently struggling with 10 day stall at 4 1/2 months post op. This is probably my 3rd stall so far. I’ve lost 70 lbs (includes pre and post op) so know I’m on the right track. Its hard to mentally keep things in perspective when we depend on the daily encouragement of seeing the scale drop. If it doesn’t move I have to fight the mental battle that I’m failing. Im still learning how to not completely obsess over the weight loss and allow myself to enjoy where I’m at today. It’s hard to do! I find great encouragement from those on this site who are veterans at this point and have experienced everything before. I have to trust their wisdom and keep to my eating plan and track my food intake religiously. I admit I find it very difficult not to weigh-in daily. That is my challenge for sure but I do measure every 4-6 weeks. I’ve been so surprised to see how many inches I’ve lost each time. I encourage you to get a soft measuring tape! Also take weekly photos. I upload them to my Baritastic app and amazed to scroll backwards and see how far I’ve come.

April 25th is my RNY date! Buddies?!
longhaul68 replied to Prioritizing Myself's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
How is my late April surgery cohort faring? I’ve moved into soft foods with some caution but everything is going and staying down. I am trying 3-5 small protein heavy meals a day. Water goals have been harder to meet but the vitamins are ok. I’d forgotten to add B12 supplement until yesterday (!) so just started. My fatigue mid day was bonkers. Hoping the B12 helps. My first surgeon follow up is on Friday, I’m a little data obsessed, measuring and watching scale. Overall feeling more flexible, energetic (mornings) and happy to see the steady loss of 23 lbs since surgery.
