February 2019 weight loss buds
gabybab replied to TheMarine79's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
I'm sorry I have been absent for so long. Today is my 1 year anniversary and I'm so happy that I had this surgery, with no regrets. I haven't lost any weight in 3 months and think I have hit a plateau. Not gaining weight, just not losing. I've lost 97 pounds and am so grateful for that, even I dont lose one more pound. I've had trouble with a upset stomach since shortly after surgery. I had an endoscopy and they said I had mild gastropathy, but nothing to really cause the symptoms. I'm debating on having another surgery to complete the DS, but am going to give it another 6 months. I don't feel ready to make that decision yet. I was walking after surgery and am not doing it anymore, plus I'm sneaking a few bad things, but certainly not what I eating before. Like today I ate a yogurt for breakfast with pumpkin seeds and granola. Lunch was 2 slices of cucumber and cauliflower with 1T ranch made from sour cream and a snack packet of cheese and nuts. I'm in a much better space but still need to be vigilant each day. I would like to say thank you to everyone here for your support. I would also like to thank @sillykitty she posted a reply to a person that solidified my decision to have the sleeve. I have it copied and read it now and then. ❤ here it is below. I agree with you, from this and previous posts, you're not ready. You are focused on what you will give up, instead of what you will gain. No one can make you want your health, weight loss, mobiliy, etc., more than you want a pastry. Hopefully you will get there one day. -

Just not hungry...

So yesterday I gave it a shot! I followed your recipe exactly and measured everything. It was good! I thought the yogurt would be overpowering but it had a great taste and consistency! Thank you! -
Food Before and After Photos
GreenTealael replied to GreenTealael's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
I will preface this by saying i do not have any food issues/addiction (my Team knew this) so my path may be a little different. I stop stressing about food a LONG time ago. I did track during weight loss phase but not I can estimate. I think my pivotal point was when my team gave me the greenlight to eat whatever I wanted on holiday in Europe. I was 4 months post op and convinced I shouldn't/couldn't eat certain thing because having the surgery meant a stringent lifestyle. But they told me to go for it, eat what I want within reason. So I ate all the pizza, gelato, crossaints & pastries I wanted. After a few days I began to visit markets in search of yogurts, cheese, fish etc. Still occasionally mixing in the decadent foods. When I returned home nearly a month later I got was back to business. I truly believe if I had deprived myself during that time i would not have ever found a balance that works for me. I know exactly what I'm willing and unwilling to eat when i go to a restaurant. I'm on autopilot. Mostly I choose a protein forward meal, vegetables/salad and a desert with the least sugar/cals. I often make substitutions because its the permanent lifestyle I chose (sugar free/lower carb/lower cal) but I don't always eat in weight loss mode because I don't want to lose anymore weight. -

Food doesn’t taste right
GreenTealael replied to elcee's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Want to bet ...😎 Joking! It maybe just be a temporary aversion. I began to develop food aversions (in 2018) and my NUT helped me create a rotating menu of featured proteins so that I didn't get sick of things completely. I still rotate protein sources weekly/ bi weekly. In fact I gave up yogurt for 6+ months because I was tired of it and yogurt was my absolute go to food. I'm just starting to eat it again. *Perhaps* for now go with what sits well and add items back little by little. And of course if your entire appetite is severely reduced for a long period, its time to touch base with your team. -
I am 13 months post revision band to bypass and lately nothing seems to taste right. Meat in particular tastes weird. I don’t have an issue eating it, it doesn’t get stuck or make me sick but it tastes and often smells weird. For example the lamb mince we ate tonight tasted very gamey. I used to love pork and would often order it when we went out but the last couple of times that hasn’t tasted right either! At this rate I am going to end up vegetarian which could be a problem as there are a heap of veggies I hate ( the bitter ones) , don’t really like eggs ( I can do the yolks so long as they are runny) and only eat small quantities of cheese. On top of that if I try to turn my hubby veggie he will rebel! I can’t live on yogurt nuts and seeds! Has anyone else been through this and how did you deal with it?

What food regimen are you on?

I agree with the above poster. That is really weird. I pretty much lived on protein shakes, cottage cheese, and Greek yogurt those first few weeks.... -
What food regimen are you on?
AZhiker replied to imaginegirl's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
That seems very extreme. Beans and legumes are very important sources of protein and one of the easiest soft foods to tolerate at first. The nuts can wait til maintenance as they have a lot of calories and fat. Yogurt and cottage cheese are also really good "first" foods. Why does he think you shouldn't have low fat cottage or yogurt? That makes no sense. Give us more of what your basic post op food plan will look like - week by week, according to your surgeon. Here's what mine looked like: Stage One (weeks 1,2): clear fluids and 2-3 protein shakes per day to meet 60 gm per day. Stage Two (weeks 2-8): soft proteins including cottage cheese, yogurt, bean soup, eggs, soft cheese, ground/pureed meat or poultry, soft fish, tofu, thin sliced deli meat. 2 protein shakes per day and 1 meal. Stage three (2 months - 6 months): New foods. 1 protein shake per day + 2 meals per day. Gradually add veggies and fruit and new proteins. -
Feeling pretty down today. I’m 12 days out, and over the last 3 days I’ve somehow gained 4 pounds. I still weigh more than when I had my surgery. I don’t understand it. I know deep down that it will start coming off, but this really troubles me. I’m still primarily on liquids (including watered down Greek yogurt and soups), getting about 40-50 grams of protein a day and under 400 cals. It doesn’t make sense to me that I’d be gaining weight.

I went to a bariatric surgeon who insisted that I go on a high protein, low carb, low fat diet. It sounds helpful, but realistically, I'm a pescetarian who relies on fish, beans, nuts, low-fat yogurt, and low-fat cottage cheese for my protein. When I told him I eat fish, he basically said that's good and gave me the impression that I'd have to rely on fish for my protein needs. I would get sick of fish if having to eat it two or three times a day. And he said no protein shakes or any food that's squishy or liquidy. That rules out protein shakes, yogurt, and cottage cheese. And beans are ruled out because they contain carbohydrates. Nuts are ruled out because they're high in fat. I was very discouraged after talking to him. How have you changed your eating habits? Which eating plan do you follow now?

DO NOT BUY A TIME SHARE!!!!! You'll never get rid of it. The financial advisor we went to for dinner was already my own advisor. He just invited us to the dinner since we had not been yet. Anyway, my protein is very adequate and comes in small packages throughout the day. Here is one day's worth of food and where I get the protein. I think it adds up to about 75 gm of protein. 19 - cooked whole grain Cereal with 1/2 c pea protein milk and a small banana. (Cereal made from steel cut oats, millet, buckwheat, amaranth, teff, quinoa, slivered almonds, raisins, unsweetened cranberries, cinnamon.) 6 - homemade Soup with Beans, legumes, lentils, quinoa 7 - millet/chick pea casserole 1.6 - apple and orange 7.6 - 2 mini fritattas made with potato, mushrooms, brocolli, chick pea flour, pea milk, nutritional yeast 4 - 4 veggie sushi rolls 2 - 1/2 c sweet potato 1 - 2 cups of fresh greens, steamed .8 - 1 c cooked radishes 1 - 1/2 c cooked mushrooms .7 - 1 brazil nut 7 - 1/4 c nuts/seeds 9 - 1/2 c plant based yogurt -
Struggling with preop diet
BoredFatGirl replied to Katheryn0303's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I have a hell of a time trying to go to sleep when my stomach is growling at me. Water will help, but also timing your meals can be really helpful as well! I am not sure what your pre-op diet consists of, but I currently eat roughly 600 calories a day, focusing on protein. For instance, when I get up, I go as long as possible without eating, then I have a protein shake. Roughly 4-5 hours later, I have a can of tuna with mayo & sriracha. After that is highly dependent on when I plan on going to sleep. If my husband and I decide to stay up and watch our shows, I like to snack, so I've pushed my last meal towards that time (which is roughly 200g of fat-free yogurt) so I don't feel like I am going without and so that I don't feel hungry before bed. -

Hey Newbie I'm 9 weeks out from VSG. I eat about a 1/2 cup and usually feel full. Occasionally I may still feel hunger and will add a veggie to my protein. That usually does it for me. I tend to feel more satisfied if I eat chicken vs yogurt, cottage cheese or other soft foods. I think the heavy protein helps me. Always be sure to get your protein in and drink 64 oz. Your pouch actually can hold about 10 oz when fully healed, not that you need to fill it, but it can hold a bit more. Good luck!

I've been cleared to eat what I like, but I am still being good. 58lbs down since the 8th of Jan and 53lbs down since the op on the 15th of Jan. I had / have a lot to lose but I am being good. Been told I can exercise now as well today so going to get on the WattBike I have hired and start lifting some 5kg dumbells, should help with firming too, which actually is not too bad so far, belly is shrinking well. An average day for food for me looks like - Breakfast - Shake - 25g of protein with vitamins and minerals & cup of decaf tea Mid morning - either a 20g protein yogurt (low sugar) or 1/2 a 30g Phd Smart Protein Bar Lunch - Chicken breast cut up with a few carrots or beans Mid afternoon - either a 20g protein yogurt (low sugar) or 1/2 a 30g Phd Smart Protein Bar Dinner - 4oz steak or chicken breast or cottage pie or scrambled eggs & either low salt / sugar baked beans, refried beans, veg mix I am pushing down as much water as possible and having my vits and supps. Feel good. Some discomfort if I eat too much or too quickly, but on the whole it has been good. No reflux or vomiting. A little loose out back if I eat too much dairy (possibly sugars) but otherwise good. Doc told me to only weigh myself once a week to help overcome any negativity of slow loss days, which I now do and is working well. Losing about 4.5lbs a week now. One thing I have noticed is my breath stinks, I am sure this is ketosis as I am eating mainly protein-based foods, but is this something anyone else has found. Hate it! Working hard to look good on a trip to the US (Pendleton Camp, San Diego and Santa Monica) and I am going on in June, need to look my best! -
I’m still not tolerating meats well (edit not really at all with exception of shrimp which I really shouldn’t be eating, (thankfully my allergy isn’t anaphylaxis at this point) and sashimi salmon, and Applegate turkey sausage didn’t go down too bad as long as it’s mixed with egg or something ...) and I have very little energy for meal prep (more like none) due to chronic illness. I buy certain things and then plan based on what’s available in my fridge or freezer. But keep some basics sometimes on rotation depending on what’s on sale or what I can get, though I always have PEScience protein powder. im pretty basic. Breakfast now is usually a 1/2 soft protein bar or whole depending on my meal plan for the day and the protein bar. And a cup of tea. Edit: I found a protein bar called built that s 110 calories and 15 grams protein protein. It tastes like a candy bar. Either that or half a BariatricPal fluffy vanilla protein bar. I like yogi tea for breakfast. Healthy skin vanilla tea is good. And sometimes the caramel apple spice slim life tea. lunch Is my main meal and more variety but I might have for example a 2.5 ounce Boca turky veggie burger with one Egglands Best egg on top. Or I’ve made a BariatricPal pancake with cooked cut up veggie sausage. or occasionally a dr. Praeger’s black bean chipotle pollock burger with BariatricPal protein mashed potato. Just some simple frozen foods that are the right portion size and easy to put in a pan and heat up. my dinner tends to be Fage total zero Greek yogurt sometimes mixed with protein powder. Or two good yogurt with protein powder. Or good culture cottage cheese. I do sometimes have a small piece of banana and a little sugar free syrup. And some sugar free land o lakes whipped topping ... when I can’t stomach much the yogurt, PEScience, good culture cottage cheese, help. Also BariatricPal protein pancakes, soups, mashed potato, protein shots, protein juice, protein pudding.

Same with me. I can drink my smoothie, no problem. My recipe is very similar, a handful of baby spinach, 1/2 cup mixed berries, scoop of GENEPRO, a splash of Fairlife milk, tablespoon of greek yogurt, and a splash of banana split sugar-free syrup. This smoothie will hold me until lunch time. -

Eating is going well. I really like poke bowls so I had just the ahi and the avocado out of it and it was so good and went down so well. I really haven't introduced too much else since I'm not at week four. But the other day I had canned tuna (with mayo) and was fine. Two nights ago I had it again and five minutes later was wretching but of course nothing was coming up. Foods that I do well with are: soft cheese, banana, avocado, raw ahi tuna, cooked tilapia, chicken thigh, yogurt, cottage cheese, refried beans and sour cream. I kind of just rotate those thru. I plan to try oatmeal tomorrow. I so miss my raw veggies and salads. And anything crunchy really. Sent from my Pixel 3 using Tapatalk -
Replace it with healthy fats! Stuff your salad in 1/2 an avocado. Drizzle with EVOO...or make a high fat vinaigrette in place of your super lo lo one. Add those nuts and nutbutters. Make savory fat bombs. Eat full fat dairy (full fat Greek yogurt + heavy cream = delish and super high cal) and fattier cuts of meat. Add seafood in butter. Add avocado to all your smoothies. You should be able to add 500-1000 cals pretty easily like this without adding a substantial increase in volume. You can also add things like hot chili oil and sesame oil to your broths. Make your protein drinks with whole fairlife milk rather than cashew milk. Add a splash of cream to your coffees: 1tbsp=50cals. Oh, buy can's of sardines in olive oil!!! So good and fatty! I could go on for days on this subject. ROFL! Go to the store!

I keep yogurt packed in my fridge. It's really the easiest grab-and-go that I have. Tuna is also a staple for me. I just add a little mayo, sriracha, and lemon juice when I'm ready to eat! Yum!
