Why is it that the surgeons are not filling!!!
Jachut replied to goodtimes's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
We have a couple of really GREAT doctors who do the fills at my clinic that arent the surgeons. I'm perfectly happy with it, they know what they're doing, they've worked with banded patients extensively and are empathetic and experienced. If I want to see the surgeon at any point in time, I can make an appointment to do so without a problem, I simply dont see the need. My doctor knows all that is necessary to supervise me, he just doesnt operate, is all. He's actually a sports medicine specialist too and has helped me quite a lot with my ankle and been supportive of my running, referred me on to a great podiatrist in ways that my surgeon, being a dedicated bariatric surgeon really couldnt have. The act of a fill is not so complicated, the major possible complications are not so many that I feel exposed in any way. If anything unusual occurred, they'd have me straight back into the surgeon anyway, its all in the same building. So I'm fine with it. And I dont pay a cent for fills anyway, its all bulk billed. -
Is she getting all these fills and unfills done under fluoro? Have slips, erosion, and various band complications been ruled out? Something isn't right here, it takes a LOT of calories just to maintain a 130kg body, probably 3000 calories daily. If she is only eating tea, Water, yogurt, and thin soup she can't be getting more than 1000 calories daily and you explain she has no active thyroid issues going. Something isn't right. Also, two slips... usually that is from PBing too much or pouch packing. If she is only drinking her food, what is she PBing on? She needs to see her doc.

I had surgery in Mexico. In theory, I follow up online or by phone but I'm not good at that and it is just as easy to use my local doctor. My primary doctor is the one I see at 10 days post surgery and every 3 months to run vitamin levels and labs. That's all I need. My Mexico doctor and nutritionist sent home the post-op diet and I just follow it and email or call with questions. Plus there is loads of info online to help. I don't know why I would need to follow up with a bariatric doc here in the states unless there was a complication my primary doc couldn't handle. Hopefully, that won't happen!

Mortgage Insurance declined because of surgery!!
Suzie Q replied to Suzie Q's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
I phoned the receptionist at my Surgeons office and OMG, she was soooo angry! But finally, after two weeks to calm down and trying not think about this, I sent off my objection letter to the insurance company. I explained the surgery and I pointed out that it was not gastric bypass (I understand from the receptionist there can be major complications after gastric bypass). I explained I was healthy before the surgery and healthy after the surgery and that my Doctor's have extensive tests to prove just that! I've asked the insurance company what documentation I would need from my Doctor's to get this insurance. Hopefully I will hear something soon. I will keep you all posted. Thanks for the replies. I can relate to you. I was banded Aug 17/07 and am hungry and trying my best to not over eat (which would mean eating great quantities of blended Soup, however, because I'm just starting on the mushie phase today). I'm definitely no expert but have read a number of posts on this site and it seems that until you get your fill (or multiple fills to find this 'sweet spot'), the band is not providing all the support it eventually will. Until then, eating smaller portions of healthy foods is based on 'will power' which I would venture to say is a problem for many of us here and could be one of the reasons we pursued the band in the first place. Hopefully this catch 22 will disappear once when we get to our sweet spot fill level. One other thing that I've read on this site that seems to make sense is in the first 4-6 weeks, your body is apparently healing from the surgery (even though we may think we're perfectly ready and able to eat anything in sight earlier than that!). If we eat too much or eat solids earlier than we're supposed to there is some chance of complications (e.g., slippage). That thought helps me, at least some of the time, to not over eat. Best of luck to us both!

How long before I won't be able to eat everything in sight?
Drashbaby posted a topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Hi, I had my lap band done 10/26/10. Easy surgery. Very little discomfort. I have played by the rules and ate only what was allowed in each time frame just as the surgeon and dietician instructed. I have had no complications. I had my first fill 12/02/10. It felt different to eat at first. I never got full. I have never had nausea or vomiting. I could eat all that I want, but I try to limit my diet to high protein, low fat, low calorie foods. I do not drink anything but water and some regular coffee. Is it common, that before you hit your sweet spot, that the "Feeling full mechanism" doesn't kick in? I have lost 38 pounds. Most of that was within the first 6 weeks and by using judgement and restraint. I get afraid that the surgery won't work or that there is a flaw that will not allow it to work right. Any input will be appreciated. Take Care and have a Great day. -
Recovery Question
LovingmeForever replied to augustkiwi's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Ask your Dr. I would say yes, what about all of us who went to Mexico to be sleeved. I took a fly home 3 days after surgery and I am feeling great with no complications, thank god! -
Who? Me? No, I have only had one minor complication, hardly worth mentioning.
-
Wondering how the band does in the long run - like after 5 years. Has anyone had slippage or other complications after this time period?
-
So, my questions to all of you are: 1. Do you regret having the surgery? Not in the slightest! 2. Have you had any complications because of the LB? Nope. None. 3. Is there anything physically you can't do anymore because of the LB? Stuff my face with a cheeseburger and french fries in 3 minutes flat.... 4. What foods and drinks are off limits now or can you not handle because of the LB? No drinks. Have even had carbonated drinks without any problem. As far as foods...I steer clear from breads right now because I have a GREAT restriction, but before this I COULD eat bread. Nothing is off limits if you can successfully get it down. 5. Have you had any negative side effects? Yes. Horrible side effects....my checkbook is smoking and my bank account is depleted from all the new clothes I have purchase in the last three weeks after dropping 40+ pounds! :biggrin1:

If self-pay... What about complications?
gohelpyourself replied to Jen40's topic in Insurance & Financing
I do not think you will have a problem with short term DBL... long term only kicks in after you exhaust short term but some ppl carry supplemental short term DBL coverage and each policy differs and you must call and check prior to avoid disappointment later. Sadly, if you are one of the few ppl who experience complications immediately post of ie. leak... that will be your responsibility to pay if you are paying out of pocket and that can add up quickly. Even one additional night can end up costing you. Best thing to do is talk with your surgeon. Are you having your surgery in the U.S? -
No support from Gynecologist!
iggychic replied to sheree212's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I have two dear friends who are MD"s. ONe is my OBGYN and she supported me in this decision. She is a tiny little thing BTW but once weighed over 300lbs. Not everyone who is tiny does not know your struggle My other dear friend was against the surgery for me. I had no comorbidities and he felt I should do the band. I wish I'd have listened to him frankly. As to the "easy way" honestly....this is the easy way. Why sugar coat that. Even I, who went through hell with complications have to say this is far easier than anything else because I don't have any options other than to eat small amounts. I also can't eat sugar or high carbs because they make me sick. That does make it easy. Sure ANY weight loss journey is hard, but this is by far the easiest IMO that I've dealt with. For most the surgery isn't what it is for me, so for those folks...heck ya it's rather easy in comparison to other options. No fighting yourself That is easy. -
I agree with your doc. There are some people that feel restriction after their first fill. The last thing you want is problems on your vacation. I know you want to get going on the weight loss, but a little extra time won't make that big of a difference in the grand scheme. I had the same dilemma several times -- whether or not to get a fill before a vacation. I always opted not to because I didn't want to have to deal with potential complications while out of town.

Hi, I am new to posting here, I have read a lot, but I was banded on May 17th. I have had no complications at all...... I am not sure this is the right place for this question.....but I have had a VERY upset stomach and diarrhea since Thursday night...My Dr. said to only take Pepto-Bismol for this, the bottle says do not take for more than 2 days. I have tried to contact my Dr and somehow the phone lines are crossed, We are in Texas where we have got all the rain so I am sure that has a lot to do with it. I live 2 hrs away, so I really don't want to have to go to the ER to get help. I was just wondering why can't I take Imodium....It works very well on me every time.....before LBS. Anyone else have this problem.....please I can use whatever experience anyone has.....Thanks in advance... Trish

Hi, I'm new here. I decided to be banded after a life of being heavy. I'm at a BMI of 30 now. Any other Canadians here? I'll be paying about $18K for it and it's not covered by insurance I think. Did anyone have it done elsewhere and are happy with the results. I see ads for bands being installed for $4K... Not sure which country this is done in My DH is freaking out and is scared that there may be really bad complications.

Today was a hard day. I thought I had low blood sugar but it checked at 122, so it may be low blood pressure. I drank a bottle of Special K water and felt better, and made sure to take my multi and iron today. I see Dr. Teng Wednesday for my followup visit. I feel like I am doing everything right, so no fears. My post surgery weight is back to my presurgery weight (swelling is going down) and I hope to see losses again soon, but I am so happy to be 30 lbs thinner and to have come through the surgery with no complications, that all I see ahead of me are positive things. I cooked chicken for my daughter tonight but asked her to take it out when it was done and put everything away so I wouldn't be tempted. I had my chicken broth but added a little ramen seasoning, which increases the calories but tastes so satisfying. I did a load of laundry tonight for my daughter, who is going to LA Weds. am with friends and is overwhelmed and exhausted. The only hard thing for me is bending to pick up laundry out of the hamper, but I am doing squats the best that I can. When I do lean forward, it's no longer the stabbing pain that it was 2 days ago. I talked to my boss today and said I expect to be back at work after the holiday. I know the first week back will be tough, but you recover faster if you get up on your feet. Just losing weight and being lighter will make it easier every day. I don't have to pack a lunch either. I'm required to use a boxed protein drink in week 2 at lunchtime. Hope it tastes OK. I may try a short drive to the store tomorrow. I don't see why I can't drive if I feel up to it. I want to start doing WII Fitness this week. It's easier than going outside into the 110 degree Las Vegas heat. I look forward to feeling cooler but it hasn't happened yet. Another bandster says she isn't hot all the time. That would be great.

Request for patients with complications!
skinnyplease replied to skinnyplease's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
Since you have posted the same question to me in all the places I posted this, I will also answer you here as posted on the OH board: Wasabubblebutt (Midwestern girl), you really are something. I've never seen anyone leap to such conclusions! You have decided I'm on some sort of witch hunt (vendetta). If you say so. The truth is you have no idea why I'm asking. I am simply asking to correspond with anyone that has had complications after using this surgeon. If you didn't use him, then ignore the question. If you did and didn't have a complication, then ignore the question. (Then you go on to say that you have all the answers about which docs have the best and which docs have the worst reps. Whatever you say. I'm not going to debate an issue with you that you obviously know nothing about. And by the way, I don’t have a “beloved” surgeon. I unlike you don’t have a case of doctor worship! You base all of your opinions on what you read on the boards. Good luck with that! I've got news for you, all surgeons have complications, even yours. Yours has also had a few deaths. But that's not what I'm interested in right now. ) As for the reasons and more information, it will be made known later. Cheers! <?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" /> -
140 Lbs Lost 7 Months Post Op
Jessica9190 replied to Crystal1984's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
CONGRATULATIONS ON YOUR DAD'S weight loss. I'd be super proud too! Can I please ask What happened? Were there complications with VSG or was it unrelated? -
It's normal to be scared. Avoid the complications thread, that was the best thing I did for myself  And I went through the B&A Pics over and over. I don't have suggestions on filling up, the liquid stage for me was just toughing it out. Knowing it was for a good cause! I kept chicken broth handy and sipped it whenever I was getting hungry. I also put seasoning in it, I use Papa John's seasoning packets (DH orders lots of pizzas, I'd have him get me the packets).

Hi, I start the pre-op diet on the 24th of Feb, can't say I'm looking forward to it though but it must be done! How are you doing post-op, no complications I hope. Looking forward to eating real food I'm sure! As a nurse who works night shift, I am a little concerned about my stamina and not feeling sick while at work. Who did your surgery?
-
Wow, Karen! You got to 8cc's quick in your VG band! I am at 8.1 now, and am 9 months out! Coincidentally, 8.0 is where I started to have mild heartburn, reflux problems. Also, heartburn and reflux are listed on my sheet as a complication/side effect immediately following a fill. You may be a bit swollen (inside) because of the fill. If so, go slow for a few days, liquids and mushies. Did they do a barium swallow? If you are too restricted, the barium will have difficulty trickling down. And yes, a slight unfill of even just 0.1-0.5cc's will help end the reflux (when you lay down with food that hasn't cleared the pouch, acid jumps up trying to help digest it=heartburn/reflux). The big bands are hard to tweak, but have more room for adjustment. When I've had reflux, no amount of dietary changes, timing changes nor medications could help...just an unfill! Good luck and be careful!

My surgery is coming up next week and I am starting to get nervous. I'm just wondering if anyone had any complications during surgery such as breathing/lung problems, heart problems (fast heart rate, high bp on anesthesia) or any other problems. I guess I'm just looking for reassurance but I do want to know truthfully if any of you had problems, what caused them, what you or your doctor could have done to prevent them (if anything), etc. I have been recently diagnosed w/ mild apnea and have a bipap machine but I have not found a mask yet that I can sleep with so I have not been wearing it while sleeping. Does anyone know if this will cause complications? I am going to take it to surgery with me. Thanks.

URGENT! Anyone have the new REALIZE? Adjustable Gastric Band?
akapsi replied to akapsi's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
I had my surgery yesterday and I feel great! No complications or extreme pains. I feel slight pressure in my chest - like a burp is stuck there, but other than that, I'm 100%. My experience with Dr. Rod was great. The staff was warming and I was very well taken care of.
